C ellar Offering 224 Germany, Austria and ltaly Weingut Ernst Bretz first featured an extended range of their wines to Opimians last year.

In 2013, it was awarded Winery of the Year by the German Agricultural Society. German wines may not be the most popular wines with consumers’ perceptions tainted by the volume production of brands such as Black Tower and Blue Nun in the 1970s. Indeed the Rheinhessen region was one of the main protagonists of such wines, but has more recently undergone a transformation. The Bretz family at Bechtolsheim has lived through this with Opimian’s Wine Consultant Jane Masters MW is a graduate of Bordeaux’s famous Institut d’Oenologie and was elected to the Institute of Masters of Wine in 1997.

Fluent in French and English, Jane is currently a member of the Council of the Institute of Masters of Wine, regularly speaks at industry seminars and is a Panel Chair for the International Wine Challenge.

Christof Höpler continues to work his magic on the shores of the shallow, marshy Lake Neusiedl in eastern Austria, producing dry and sweet white wines as well as some great reds, and proving that Austria is a force to be reckoned with. Werner and Elena Walch, based in the mountains of the Alto Adige, produce their own range of wines as well as having contacts with producers throughout the whole of Italy. This cellar offering includes wines from traditional regions such as Piedmont and Tuscany as well as the more southern regions of Puglia and Sicily, which have seen great improvements over recent years.

Weingut Ernst Bretz Bechtolsheim Congratulations go to Weingut Ernst Bretz for winning Winery of the Year 2013. Awarded on October 25th, 2013 by the German Agricultural Society it recognizes the huge number (157) of medal-winning wines produced by Weingut Ernst Bretz in 2013. The Rheinhessen region is currently one of the most exciting regions in Germany with a new wave of winemakers producing modern wines. The Bretz family estate at Bechtolsheim has roots dating back to 1721 when its ancestors cultivated vines on the Petersberg Hill for nuns in Mainz. Today, ninth generation winemaker Horst and his brother, vineyard manager Harald, are at the helm.

Grauer Burgunder QbA Trocken, 2013, Rheinhessen, Ernst Bretz The Grauer Burgunder (aka Pinot Gris) 2013 is pale in colour with fresh apple aromas. Soft and light on the palate it is very approachable and very moreish, ending on a fresh pear note. The grapes were cultivated on chalky soils known as Merkel.

Riesling Spätlese Trocken, 2012, Rheinhessen A bone-dry style of Riesling, it has a mineral characteristic, light body and firm acidity. The classification of German wines is confusing to say the least, but Spätlese, meaning late harvest, signifies that the grapes were picked fully ripe, but less than Auslese. The grapes can be used to make either sweet or dry wines; in this case Trocken means dry. The wine will open up becoming more expressive with some time in bottle.

Riesling Kabinett, 2012, Rheinhessen, Ernst Bretz With the typical balance found in German Riesling between sweetness and low alcohol, the Riesling Kabinett 2012 is perfect with just 10% alcohol and over 30 grams per litre of residual sugar offset by the tangy, sour green apple acidity. Mineral aromas of slate and earth mix with honey, peach skins and cooking apples. The palate is sweet on the attack with fresh green apple flavours and acidity that provides depth. Riesling is Germany’s great grape producing a range of styles and its top wines. It represents approximately one fifth of the total acreage under vine in the country.

Riesling Spätlese, 2012, Rheinhessen, Ernst Bretz A sweeter Riesling with 59 grams per litre residual sugar, the ripeness of the grapes shows through as a spicy, honeyed, slightly marzipan characteristic. With a soft, sweet attack offset by the firm acidity, it has honey and spice and a long green apple flavour on the finish.

Riesling is a very old variety originating in Germany as far back as 1435. German wine regions are amongst the most northerly in the world and part of Riesling’s success is its resistance to cold due to the hardness of its wood. It also buds late helping to avoid spring frosts.

Bretz Gewürztraminer Spätlese Trocken, 2012, Rheinhessen Bright yellow in colour, the Gewürztraminer Spätlese Trocken has an intense Turkish Delight and citronella characteristic. Intense and elegant on the palate, it presents a slight spritz, mid-palate weight and a long lemon finish. Dry in style with just two to three grams per litre of residual sweetness it will complement steamed or fried fish dishes as well as Asian cuisine.

Bretz Gewürztraminer Spätlese, 2011, Rheinhessen With a year more in terms of age and over 65 grams per litre of residual sweetness, this is a slightly richer, more honeyed style of Gewürztraminer. With similar aromas of rose petals and acacia honey, the sweetness is perfectly balanced with fresh lemon citrus acidity on the palate.

It will pair well with savoury cheeses, Asian cuisine, and various desserts.

He manages the 46 hectares of vineyards that lie around the town of Breitenbrunn on the west bank of Lake Neusiedl in eastern Austria. Makers of high quality wines, they can be found on the wine lists of some of the world’s top restaurants.

Grüner Veltliner, Qualitätswein, 2013, Burgenland Aromas of fennel, green apples, white pepper spice and honey all mingle in the glass. With a soft, light palate, the Grüner Veltliner 2013 has refreshing flavours of limes, green apples and pears with a long, elegant lemon citrus finish and good acidity. A great example of Austria’s unique and dominant white grape variety, it is grown in more than a third of the country’s vineyards.

Riesling, Qualitätswein, 2013, Burgenland Shy at the time of tasting, this Riesling has all the structure and balance of a wine that will come into its own given a little time. Lime and mineral flavours on the palate are supported by firm acidity giving it great depth with a long green apple and lime finish. The grapes were harvested by hand on October 1st, and were fermented so that the wine is almost bone-dry.

Zweigelt, Qualitätswein, 2012, Burgenland The most commonly planted black grape variety in Austria; Zweigelt is a cross between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent created by Fritz Zweigelt in 1922 at the research institute in Klosterneuburg. The variety naturally produces high yields and so needs to be carefully managed in the vineyard. Christof’s wine is full-bodied. It has dark plummy fruits, coffee and smoke aromas producing a mellow style, rich and concentrated with structure and firm acidity.

“Erwein” St. Laurent, Qualitätswein, 2011, Burgenland St. Laurent produces elegant velvety wines sometimes described as a hearty version of Pinot Noir. The “Erwein” 2011 is a little restrained on the nose with forest fruits and leafy flavours, a soft attack with elegant and fine texture, and slightly under ripe berry fruit flavours on the finish. The grapes were harvested by hand between September 14th and September16th and the wine matured for 18 months in used oak barrels prior to bottling. Named “Erwein” after the head of the Höpler family, the first son has been christened Erwein for many generations.

Pinot Noir, Qualitätswein, 2011, Burgenland This was my favourite wine in the Höpler line-up this time around. Medium ruby in colour, it has complex mellow aromas of coffee, red berries, and meat. It is rich and mellow on the palate with good structure and weight, nice red fruits, vanilla, and a fresh red fruit finish. The wine was matured for 12 months in one and two year old French oak barrels. Austria is better known for white wines, but this is great stuff!

Beerenauslese, Qualitätswein, Burgenland The giant, shallow, marshy Lake Neusiedl (20 miles long and only three feet deep) has a huge influence on the climate of its surrounding shores creating a mist that rolls in and envelopes the vineyards allowing the development of so-called “noble rot”. The skins of the Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Welschriesling grapes are penetrated by the fungus Botrytis Cinerea causing them to shrivel while concentrating flavours. The results are a golden wine with complex, mellow aromas of vanilla, honey, and apricots.

On the palate it is elegant and lush at the same time with earthy, smoky, honey flavours and spices that dance on the tongue. This is a perfect wine to partner with Foie Gras or sweet desserts.

Le Vigne di Sammarco S.R.L. Cellino San Marco Brindisi, Puglia Le Vigne di Sammarco in Puglia is located at the northern end of the heel of the big “boot” close to the town of Brindisi. The Puglia region has transformed in recent times. While a large proportion of the wines produced are still shipped out in bulk for blending with wines from more northern regions, producers such as Le Vigne di Sammarco have emerged with a focus on producing quality bottled wines. The vines benefit from the cooling winds blowing in from the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.

Terre d’Uva Negroamaro, 2012, IGP Salento Negroamaro The principal grape of the eastern Salento region can, as the name Negroamaro suggests, be bitter and hard. The Terre d’Uva 2012 has a lush apple nose with succulent dark fruits, black cherries and good concentration.

Flavours are fairly simple, but it is mouth-filling and easy to drink. Produced from 100% Negroamaro grapes picked in the second half of September, the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks with no use of oak.

Terre d’Uva Primitivo, 2012, IGP Salento Primitivo The Terre d’Uva Primitivo is a deep purple colour with blackberry fruit aromas, a soft rich attack on the palate with concentrated dark fruits, and nice tannin structure.

Probably Salento’s most famous grape variety, it is the same as California’s Zinfandel. It has been planted in Puglia since 1799; however its origins lie in neither Puglia nor California. It is now known to be a Croatian variety from central Dalmacija.

Terre d’Uva Salice Salentino Riserva, 2010, DOP Nice cedary aromas mingle with blackberries and apples.

The Salice Salentino Riserva 2010 is concentrated with firmness and will benefit from cellaring. On the palate flavours of vanilla and cooked dark fruits provide lots of appeal. Produced from a blend of 80% Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nera, the vines are cultivated in Cellino San Marco and Salice Salentino approximately 10 kilometres further south. After malo-lactic fermentation, the wine was aged in second and third use barrels for nine months.

Terre d’Uva Primitivo di Manduria, 2011, DOP Primitivo is particularly suited to the western Salento area and the red soils over limestone around Manduria. The Terre d’Uva 2011 is a deep purple colour with cedary slate aromas and soft succulent fruits on the palate followed by firm tannin. This is a more serious style, structured with chewiness on the finish and persistent fruit flavours of brambles, cherries and vanilla. The grapes were cultivated at Sava west of Manduria, picked and crushed before fermenting at 25°C to 26°C.

Pecten, 2013, IGP Salento, Le Vigne di Sammarco Fiano is a traditional white variety from Puglia. Aromatic with scents of fresh limes and spice, it has a broad palate with a slightly sweet impression which is perfectly balanced with the crisp acidity and lingering fresh apple flavour. The grapes were harvested at the end of August, beginning of September, and the juice slowly fermented with selected yeasts.

Solemnis, 2011, IGP Salento Primitivo, Le Vigne di Sammarco Solemnis is 100% Primitivo from grapes grown at Cellino San Marco. Deep in colour, it has intense brambly fruit aromas and a pure linear structure on the palate with flavours of blackcurrants, berries and vanilla.

Concentrated with good acidity and pure fruit, the wine underwent malo-lactic fermentation in barrel and was subsequently aged six months in French Allier oak barriques. It is a truly stylish wine from Puglia.

Bisso, 2010, DOP Salice Salentino, Riserva, Le Vigne di Sammarco Intense fruits and more obvious oak flavours characterize the Bisso Riserva. Woody spices and dark fruit aromas lead to a rich fruit palate with cedary notes, firm tannins and a long cherry, chocolate and liquorice finish. Produced from a blend of 80% Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nera, the grapes were harvested in early September and the juice left to macerate on skins prior to fermentation. Malo-lactic fermentation was carried out in French Allier oak barrels where the wine was matured a further 12 months.

Archèe Blend, 2011, IGP Salento, Le Vigne di Sammarco After 14 months maturation in oak barrels, the Archeè Blend 2011 is currently dominated by the oak giving it intense cedar and smoky bacon aromas. On the palate it has a sweet, succulent attack with coconut flavours and a firm finish. It is a blend of equal proportions of Negroamaro and Primitivo. The grapes were picked towards the end of September and fermented on skins for eight days prior to maturation in oak. With time, the oak aromas will mellow and integrate with the fruit.

in the mountains of northern Italy is the village of Tramin Avenue Srl. High surrounded by stunning scenery and vineyards. Werner Walch’s family has been in this location for centuries, and before them there was a monastery here. The beautiful 16th century vaulted cellars are filled with Termeno, traditional carved ornate wooden “botti” or casks. Werner’s wife Elena took over the two magnificent estates Castel Ringberg and Kastelaz Alto Adige having previously practiced as an architect. Since that time she has won numerous awards for her wines.

Südtirol

Monsupello is located in Torricella Verzate in Pavia. The Boatti family acquired the Podere La Borla in the DOC Oltrepò Pavese in 1914.

“Oltrepò” translates to beyond the Po River.

Pinot Grigio, 2013, DOC Alto Adige, E. von Keller 2013 was a more classic vintage in the Alto Adige than other recent years with regular rain showers preventing water stress in the vineyards. Tasted directly from tank, the wine has nice fresh apples and honey aromas.

Light to medium-bodied it has fresh lemon flavours, good acidity and a long, very moreish finish. The grapes were gently pressed and the juice left to settle prior to fermentation at low temperature.

The palate is structured with firm, tangy acidity ending with flavours of passion fruit, limes and bitter almonds. Risotto primavera with smoked mozzarella cheese

Pinot Noir “Prendo”, 2011, IGT Dolomiti, Wilhelm Walch This is a great value Pinot Noir ready for early drinking.

Pale ruby in colour, it has an earthy strawberry nose with coffee notes. The palate is soft, light, approachable and elegant with a long spicy flavour. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged in the beautiful traditional old oak casks that fill the winery. These were commissioned by Werner Walch’s ancestors and made from imported oak, with local craftsmen carving out vineyard related scenes on the ends.

Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva, 2011, DOC Alto Adige, Wilhelm Walch Quite closed on the nose at the time of tasting, this Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva has more forest fruits and vanilla flavours on the palate with good weight, structure, and firm tannins. It should benefit from some cellaring prior to drinking. Produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, hot weather in 2011 was tempered by occasional rains in the Alto Adige allowing grapes to fully ripen. The wine was matured in traditional large oak “botti” and smaller 20 hectolitre French oak casks.

Lagrein, 2012, DOC Alto Adige, Wilhelm Walch The Lagrein grape variety is indigenous and unique to the north of Italy, in the Alto Adige and Trentino. The Wihelm Walch 2012 is a dense, powerful wine with floral and ripe dark fruit aromas. A concentrated, structured wine, it has flavours of blackberries and other slightly under ripe black fruits with powdery texture and fine tannins. It was partmatured in large oak casks, part in 20 hectolitre French oak barrels from the Allier forest.

Terre di Ger Sauvignon Blanc, 2013, IGT Delle Venezie Another elegant, yet powerful wine from the Terre di Ger estate, the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc has gooseberry aromas with hints of nettles and limes. A soft attack on the palate, green fruits unfurl to produce a light, elegant style with fine acidity and great balance. The Baite’s vineyard is on limestone clay soils with high density vines and severe pruning producing limited yields. The grapes were harvested by hand and gently pressed in the modern wine cellar prior to fermenting at a low temperature around 16°C.

Terre di Ger Cabernet Franc, 2012, DOC Friuli Grave Concentrated with a dense purple colour, on the nose there are intense spicy floral aromas with beeswax, violets, incense, and cedar. While the wine has not been matured in oak, it has pencil lead, incense and vanilla flavours. It is structured on the palate with fine, dense tannins and ripe dark fruits on the finish. The grapes were de-stemmed after harvest and left to cold soak for several days at 8°C to 10°C prior to fermentation.

Nebbiolo d’Alba, Bricco Reala, 2012, DOC, Bel Colle The Bel Colle Nebbiolo d’Alba 2012 is quite light ruby in colour with herbal aromas, elegant, fine texture on the palate and chewy tannins on the finish. The Nebbiolo grapes grow on sandy soils in Roero on the left bank of the Tanaro River in Piemonte. After fermentation it was matured for a year in traditional casks and French Allier barrels.

Barolo, 2010, DOCG, Bel Colle Bel Colle Barolo 2010 is deep ruby in colour with a developed bouquet of cut hay, liquorice and forest fruits.

Concentrated, it has succulent good fruit mid-palate, a full body, velvety texture and a long, spicy, liquorice and incense finish. The Bel Colle vineyards are situated in the municipality of Verduno. After fermentation the wine was matured for two years in oak and chestnut casks.

Drinking nicely now, it will continue to develop and complements red meat dishes, game, wild mushrooms and mature cheeses.

Dolcetto d’Alba, 2012, DOC, Luigi Oddero A more serious style of Dolcetto, the Luigi Oddero wine has mellow earthy fruits. With a soft attack on the palate and medium weight, the acidity is firm and it ends on tight tannins. The vineyards are located in and around the hilltop villages of Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra on steep southern exposed slopes. The soils are rich in microelements and salts of magnesium and manganese oxide with relatively shallow calcareous marl alternating with mixed sand and clay strata.

Langhe Nebbiolo, 2010, DOC, Luigi Oddero Langhe Nebbiolo 2010 is quite restrained on the nose with smoky aromas. Medium-bodied, it is concentrated and structured on the palate with good tannin and balance allowing it to develop over time. The Nebbiolo vines are on a hillside around La Morra at an altitude of 250 and 300 metres on soils rich in marl and sand with high humus and mineral salt content. The wine was fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks.

Barolo, 2009, DOCG, Luigi Oddero The nose is restrained with a complex bouquet, mellow aromas of forest fruits and undergrowth. The Luigi Oddero Barolo 2009 is elegant on the palate with a light to medium body, mellow flavours, and a silky texture with a cherry and leather finish. The fruit came from some of Luigi Oddero’s best vineyards in La Morra, Serralunga d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d’Alba. The grapes were harvested by hand with strict selection. After fermentation the wine was aged for 24 months in French and Slavonic oak barrels.

Barolo, 2008, Rocche Rivera, DOCG, Luigi Oddero The Barolo Rocche Rivera 2008 has a complex bouquet with meaty and vanilla aromas, a concentrated palate with earthy fruit flavours, firm acidity and good tannin structure.

The three hectare vertiginous vineyard is positioned at approximately 350 meters. The soils consist of bluish-grey marl with loose clayey sandy mixtures. The grapes were hand-selected at the end of September, de-stemmed and crushed, then fermented at between 27°C and 30°C in stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged for 24 months in French and Slavonic oak barrels. Drinking nicely now, it will continue to develop for some years.

Le Grive, 2012, DOC Monferrato, Forteto della Luja A complex, concentrated wine, Le Grive 2012 has intricate aromas of spice, vanilla, nutmeg, and fruits. The palate is rich and succulent with great concentration and weight. It has a pure, bright, fresh cherry acidity, tight fine tannins and a lingering finish. A blend of 80% Barbera and 20% Pinot Noir, the vineyards are located at Loazzolo on south west facing slopes. Cirotto, 2013, DOCG Asolo Prosecco Superiore, Extra Dry Cirotto has produced a light and refreshing sparkling wine. Pale lime in colour, it has delicate fruit aromas, a soft, fruity palate with elegant balance, and nice fine bubbles. It is very easy to drink and delicious! It is produced in the north east of Italy in the province of Asolo from 100% Glera grapes using the Charmat method.

The grapes were harvested and the juice fermented to dryness. The wine then underwent a second fermentation in pressure tanks to retain the sparkle.

Delicate pears, melons and pear drops aromas introduce this light to medium-bodied wine with nice balance. It is soft and easy on the palate with fresh pear flavours.

A blend of 80% Garganega with 20% Chardonnay, the grapes were hand-harvested in September from hillside vineyards in the province of Verona. The touch of residual sweetness is perfectly balanced with citrus acidity on the finish.

Villa Mondi Soave Classico, 2013, DOC, Campagnola Refreshing and flavoursome, the Villa Mondi Soave has aromas of fresh apples and is medium-bodied with lemon and lime citrus flavours on the palate and good balanced acidity. Produced from 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano, the grapes came from selected hillside vineyards and were picked by hand. Fermentation was at low temperature to produce a light wine with a slightest touch of residual sweetness.

Dogarina Carmenère, Campodipietra, 2012, DOC Piave Appealing floral aromas of Parma violets and rose petals come through on the nose with a leafy herbal background. This wine has a succulent sweet palate with fine tannins and floral finish. Produced by Dogarina in Piave, north of the city of Venice, the vineyards are in the region of Campodipietra with magnesium and clay soils.

The wine was fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks with a small proportion in large oak casks.

Valpolicella Classico, 2013, DOC, Ca’ La Bionda Intense red fruits with some herbs, the palate is typically Valpolicella; soft and light with nice cranberry and redcurrant flavours. It is produced from 80% Corvina and a Corvinone field mix with 20% Rondinella grown on a hillside facing east at between 150 and 300 metres.

The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and has an elegant structure with balanced acidity; it is delicious for immediate drinking and will complement a range of Italian foods. Alessandro and Nicola Castellani focus their attentions on the scrupulous management of their vineyards, all of which are farmed organically.

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, 2010, DOCG, Ca’ La Bionda Only the best grapes are used to make Amarone and it shows. This wine is complex, concentrated and absolutely delicious. The bouquet is made up of aromas of cherries, dried fruits, butterscotch, caramel, cooked forest fruits and crème brûlée. The palate is soft and succulent, with intense cherry kirsch, mellow vanilla oak and spice flavours. It is balanced and long. Produced from a blend of 70% Corvina, 20% Corvinone and 10% Rondinella, the least compact bunches of grapes with the best exposure to the sun are selected by hand at harvest time in September. These are left to dry on cane racks, allowing the grapes to shrivel and raisin naturally until end of January or early February.

The raisined fruit is then slowly fermented and aged for a further 36 months, partly in small oak barrels.

Valpolicella Classico Superiore, Ripasso, 2010, DOC, I Galli, Le Ragose Intense aromas, blackcurrants and slate lead to a structured palate with depth and a long black fruit and mineral finish. Made using the Ripasso method, the grapes are initially fermented at harvest time in September and then re-fermented for 8 to 20 days on the skins leftover from Amarone production the following March. These lees and skins contain some residual sugar creating more alcohol and giving complexity to the Valpolicella. The wine was subsequently matured for two years in large traditional oak “botti”. Le Ragose estate is located at one of the highest points in the Valpolicella region, with the terraced vines often sitting above the fog on south west facing slopes.

Il Veltro, Rosso di Montalcino, 2012, DOC, Col d’Orcia The 500 hectare Col d’Orcia estate in Montalcino has 140 hectares of vines managed organically since 2010, making it the largest organic wine-producing farm in the whole of Tuscany. The state of the art winery is managed by winemaker Edoardo Virano where he makes exceptional wines. Il Veltro, Rosso di Montalcino 2012 is a vibrant, fresh and elegant wine. Crunchy red cherry acidity complements fresh red berry fruit flavours, silky tannins and a long finish. After fermentation in stainless steel, the wine was aged for twelve months in Slavonian oak casks providing an extra spicy dimension. Delicious now, it will develop for several years.

Il Veltro, Brunello di Montalcino, 2009, DOCG, Col d’Orcia The estate sits on the southern side of the Montalcino denomination on a hill that looks down onto the Orcia River at an average of 300 metres. 108 hectares of vines lie within the DOCG appellation making it one of the largest in Montalcino. It is also one of the most progressive working in collaboration with the University of Florence on research into improving quality. The Il Veltro, Brunello di Montalcino 2009 is brimming with red berries and herbs.

Medium-bodied, it has great depth balanced with bitter cherry acidity and a long finish. Produced from the selected Brunello clone of Sangiovese, the wine was aged for three years in large French Allier and Slavonian oak casks as is the tradition in the region. Still very young, it is drinking nicely and will continue to develop complexity.

Fonte al Vescovo, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, 2010, DOCG Deep ruby in colour, with a bouquet of prunes, herbs and black cherries, the Fonte al Vescovo is elegant with a fine texture, and long red cherry finish. Locally known as Prugnolo Gentile, the Sangiovese vineyards lie around the medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano in southern Tuscany, not to be confused with the grape variety Montepulciano grown in the Abruzzo region. The climate is influenced by the proximity of Lakes Montepulciano, Chiusi and Trasimeno, and the lava cone Mount Amiata; the 2010 season experienced moderate temperatures.

The wine was matured for two years in a mixture of large Slavonian oak casks and small French oak barrels.

Pontemagno Rosso Piceno, 2013, DOC, Casa Vinicola S. Piersanti & C. Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes have been blended in equal proportions to produce a wine full of plum fruits and floral spice. Light to medium-bodied, it has structure and light tannins, and presents good value for everyday drinking. The hilly terrain in the Marche lies in the Ascoli Piceno and Ancona provinces that run from the Misa River down to Abruzzo.

Arduini Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, 2013, DOC, Conti Speroni A good value wine for everyday drinking, it has great plummy damson fruits and chocolate aromas. On the palate it is light and soft while mouth-filling with a sweet, succulent body ending with dark fruits, black cherries and soft tannins. It is produced from 100% Montepulciano, the grape variety planted in the Abruzzo region. The variety is vigorous, but ripens late and so it tends not to be planted further north.

La Ferla Inzolia, 2013, IGP Terre Siciliane, Viticultori Associati di Canicattì Vines are tended close to the ancient Greek temple of Agrigento on Sicily’s south west side. Wine production was brought to the island by the ancient Greeks circa 800BC. Recently, the island has been making great strides in improving its wines often with a focus on old varieties such as Inzolia. La Ferla Inzolia 2013 has lots of appeal, fresh apple, pear drops and melon fruit flavours with a delicious lemon citrus finish. With a typical island climate influenced by the winds coming in from Africa and its southern latitude, it is mild in winter, while the summers are hot and dry.
