Opimian’s Wine Consultant Jane Masters MW is a graduate of Bordeaux’s famous Institut d’Oenologie and was elected to the Institute of Masters of Wine in 1997.

Fluent in French and English, Jane is currently a member of the Council of the Institute of Masters of Wine, regularly speaks at industry seminars and is a Panel Chair for the International Wine Challenge.

For this latest Cellar Offering we are clearly in European territory and in the heart of traditional vine-growing with a major focus on Italy. This country, full of its ancient culture and history, is strongly linked to wine from the top to the bottom of the boot, including body and heel.

With vineyards in Alto Adige, Piemonte, and in central zones including Toscana and Puglia, each region has its own combination of influences from the surrounding seas and Apennine range of mountains. On the island of Sicily vineyards surround the ancient Greek temple at Agrigento. Complementing the wines from Italy, are wines from further north, including our Austrian friend Christof Höpler in Burgenland. We also re-introduce a producer from the Rheinhessen in Germany; the Bretz family has been growing grapes and making wine in Petersberg since 1721.

Weingut Ernst Bretz Bechtolsheim The Bretz family estate was founded in 1721 and the family is immensely proud of its long history and intimate association with wine. Representing the 9th generation, Horst is the winemaker and his brother Harald the vineyard manager. Their father Ernst is still very involved, sharing his experience and passing on his passion for wine and the vine. Based in the village of Bechtolsheim in the Rheinhessen, the Petersberg hill, at only 264 meters, is the highest in the landscape and can be seen for miles around. It was here that their ancestors cultivated the first vines and made wine for the Romanesque convent of nuns in Mainz.

Although the winery is being managed by the 9th generation, the 10th generation is not far behind to carry on the legacy and take Weingut Ernst Bretz into the future; pictured from left to right, Viktoria, Valentin, Heike & Horst, Harald, and Sebastian.

Riesling QbA Trocken, Ernst Bretz, 2011, Rheinhessen Riesling is the most widely planted white grape variety in Germany and was first planted in the Rheinhessen in 1490. The Riesling Trocken has restrained mineral and lime aromas, is light and refreshing on the palate, and ends on a peachy note. Only Germany produces this style of Riesling, with good acidity and light in alcohol, although this is by no means the lightest at 12%.

Grauer Burgunder QbA Trocken, Ernst Bretz, 2012, Rheinhessen For years Rheinhessen, Germany’s largest wine region, was producing large quantities of bland, commercial, semi-sweet wines and was home to brands such as Black Tower and Blue Nun. The Ernst Bretz Grauer Burgunder is restrained, with appealing white blossom aromas and more peaches and mango flavours on the palate. It has structure and nice balance with an almost imperceptible few grams of residual sweetness providing extra body.

Bretz Gewürztraminer Spätlese, 2010, Rheinhessen A fine example of Gewürztraminer, it has delicious floral rose petal and citronella aromas, intense, but not overpowering. Its soft, sweet attack, with lychees, Turkish delight and lemon flavours on the palate, introduces perfectly balanced acidity leading to a long finish.

Bretz Gewürztraminer Spätlese Trocken, 2011, Rheinhessen

This is a completely different style of Gewürztraminer; late harvest, but dry. Pale yellow in colour, it is aromatic with intense lychee and lemon notes. With good structure and depth, it is approaching an Alsace rather than traditional German style, a reflection of how winemaking is changing in both countries.

Bretz St. Laurent QbA Trocken, 2011, Rheinhessen St. Laurent was planted by Bretz on Petersberg in the 1930s to 1940s. The variety is thought to have originated in Austria and its name is believed to refer to Laurentius, the “patron saint” of chefs, whose day on August 10th marks the point in time at which St. Laurent grapes start to ripen. Deep ruby in colour, it has a mellow, complex bouquet with intense vanilla spice combined with cooked dark fruits. On the palate there is ripe fruit with succulent vanilla and coconut flavours leading to a fine finish.

Höpler Breitenbrunn, Burgenland The Höpler winery in Breitenbrunn, Burgenland, on the banks of Lake Neusiedl, is run by Christof Höpler. Here he oversees the cultivation of 46 hectares of vineyards and the winemaking, producing white, red, a little bit of rosé, and of course sweet wines. During the summer months, the region enjoys the most sunshine days and the warmest temperatures in Austria. As it evaporates, the shallow lake creates humidity in the air and a particular mesoclimate.

Grüner Veltliner, 2012, Qualitätswein, Burgenland This is the grape variety which has helped to turn Austria’s fortunes around, gaining acclaim and building reputation. It is the country’s most widely planted variety, covering roughly a third of the total vineyards planted. The 2012 has all the typical varietal characteristics; aromas of green Granny Smith apples and freshly cut meadows, and limey flavours with a zesty mineral tangy acidity and medium length.

Pinot Blanc, 2012, Qualitätswein, Burgenland Another triumph for Christof! His Pinot Blanc 2012 follows on perfectly from the previous vintage. It is restrained, but flavoursome, with fresh white fruits, pears and almond aromas. Soft and broad on the palate, it is approachable with delicious lemon and pear flavours.

Höpler cultivate 46 hectares of vines lying on the western banks of Lake Neusiedl, which straddle the AustrianHungarian border. Soils are varied and the unique climate has both the greatest amount of sunshine in central Europe and the warmest temperatures in Austria.

Chardonnay, 2012, Qualitätswein, Burgenland It is no wonder that Christof’s wines feature on the wine lists of some of the top chefs around the world, selected by the sommeliers of Jamie Oliver, Marco Pierre White and Thomas Keller of The French Laundry. They are all first-class and super food matching wines. The unoaked Chardonnay has delicate aromas of white fruits and nuts with more peachy notes developing on the palate. Soft and round, it is structured with medium weight and a fresh lime and green apple twist on the finish.

Rosé Célestia, 2012, Qualitätswein, Burgenland The modern winery at Breitenbrunn is located south east of Vienna on the west bank of Lake Neusiedl. The dry Rosé Célestia is produced from the Blaufränkisch grape.

The warmth and shelter of Burgenland are well-suited to this variety. A pretty pale pink colour, the grapes were picked and gently pressed. Soft and approachable on the palate, it has balanced acidity and medium length.

Azienda Agricola Villa di Maser Maser, Treviso The home of Diamante Luling Buschetti and Vittorio Dalle Ore in the northern Veneto is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the great masterpieces of 16th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio. The villa sits at the heart of 230 hectares that comprise the estate, of which 33 hectares are planted with vineyards. Wine has always been an integral part of the estate, since the villa was designed by Palladio. Varieties such as Glera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are cultivated with low yields to produce a range Text of wines.

Villa di Maser Asolo Prosecco, DOCG, Superiore, Extra Dry Prosecco has been growing massively in popularity and no wonder when it offers such great value. It is a light, refreshing fruity bubbly, ideal as a sparkling start to a meal or for a celebration. In fact many of my friends prefer it to Champagne; it is just different. The Extra Dry has a fine mousse with a mere touch of extra sweetness giving it more roundness.

With intense blackcurrant aroma there is no mistaking that this wine has a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon which is complemented with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2009 is soft and elegant with medium body and long lingering flavours. Despite spending 18 months in oak it is not overtly oaky. After picking, the grapes were macerated on skins for 10 to 12 days with frequent pumping over.

Il Maserino 2008 is showing nice complexity and developed flavours. Produced from a blend of Bordeaux varieties, these were grown on three plots within the estate, Giazzèra, Brolo and Valdelroro. The first, Giazzèra, is a steep south – south west facing hill with poor clay soils. Brolo and Valdelroro are more gentle sloped plains with alluvial and gravel soils. Each plot was hand-harvested as it reached full ripeness and vinified separately. The wine was aged for 18 months in oak and has a distinct leafy, mellow Bordeaux characteristic with fine texture.

At the young age of six, Marco Rizzello was already showing interest in the interaction between grapevine and soil. Having studied oenology, he now heads production and management, crediting his father Franco for the knowledge and skills passed on to him.

LE VIGNE DI SAMMARCO S.R.L. Cellino San Marco Based in the south at Italy’s heel, the family winery and

vineyards are located around the rural town of Cellino San Marco south of Brindisi where the land is flat and easy to cultivate. The vines benefit from cooling winds blowing in from the Adriatic and Ionian seas which provide a respite from the unrelenting daytime heat in summer.

Terre d’Uva Negroamaro, 2011, IGP Salento Negroamaro The Rizzello family has 180 hectares of vines with approximately 80% dedicated to indigenous grape varieties such as Negroamaro. This wine is 100% Negroamaro. Wines produced from this native grape can be rustic and bitter, but in this case Le Vigne di Sammarco winemaker Vincenzo Baldari has tamed the grape to produce a wine with dried fruits and chocolate flavours with balanced acidity.

Terre d’Uva, Salice Salentino, 2011, DOP Salice Salentino A typical blend from the Salento region, the deep intensely-coloured Negroamaro is combined with 20% Malvasia Nera which brings a more velvety texture to the final wine. The 2011 has a lovely fresh characteristic, with savoury, meaty aromas followed by more fresh cherry fruits on the palate and ending with pleasant acidity.

Terre d’Uva Primitivo, 2011, IGP Salento Primitivo This wine is 100% Primitivo, Puglia’s most famous grape variety known as Zinfandel in California. It ripens earlier than the Negroamaro, with picking towards the end of August. The wine was fermented at a low temperature of 18˚C. The skins were then left to macerate for six to eight days in order to focus on fruit, revealing the varietal’s floral and herbal characteristics, with a backbone of firm acidity.

SOLEMNIS, IGP Salento Primitivo, 2010, Le Vigne di Sammarco The Primitivo grape originated in Croatia and was introduced into Puglia in the 18th century, a significant time before it made its way to the United States and California in the mid-19th century. In the past, Puglian Primitivo wines were shipped northwards to areas such as Toscana and Piemonte in order to boost their wines in colour and alcohol; the variety can often produce wines with over 15% alcohol. In more recent times it has gained recognition of its own. The Solemnis 2010 is complex with layers of plummy fruits, figs, chocolate and integrated vanilla oak, a result of ageing six months in French Allier oak barrels.

Avenue Srl. Termeno, Alto Adige, Südtirol Werner Walch comes from one of the oldest and most established wine families in the Alto Adige. Right up in the north of Italy, this region borders Austria. People speak German rather than Italian and there is a strong Germanic culture and feel to the architecture and the approach to life. From their base in Tramin, Werner and his wife Elena are keen to develop their knowledge of wines from around the world. I most recently caught up with them during an Opimian trip to Bordeaux and both were full of questions to fellow winemakers from the area.

Chardonnay, 2012, DOC Südtirol, E. von Keller The E. von Keller Chardonnay is produced exclusively for Opimian. The 2012 has a nutty aroma combined with ripe apple fruits. Medium-bodied, it has a long aftertaste. After picking, the grapes were gently pressed, the juice cooled and left to settle. The clear juice was racked off the sediment and fermented at low temperature in stainless steel tanks.

Tramin and wine are greatly connected to each other. In fact, the municipality is known as “Termeno sulla Strada del Vino”, which translates to “Tramin on the wine road”

Pinot Grigio, 2012, DOC Alto Adige, E. von Keller Pinot Grigio grapes were picked and gently pressed and the must chilled and left to naturally sediment. The clear juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks at 18˚C to produce typical fresh apple aromas. It is more structured than most Italian Pinot Grigio’s as a result of its northern provenance. It is dry and broad on the palate with a long firm apple finish.

Pale in colour, this wine is immediately approachable with great balance. 2012 was an exciting vintage in the Alto Adige, in particular for white wines producing healthy grapes with good sugar levels as well as good acidity.

Pinot Noir “Prendo”, 2010, IGT Dolomiti, Wilhelm Walch Delightful Pinot Noir varietal aromas shine through in the Pinot Noir “Prendo”, with wild strawberries and other earthy fruits. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was matured in old large oak vats, giving it extra spicy complexity and length. Sealed with a screw-cap to retain the freshness of the grape and for convenience, it is ideal for picnics in the park on a summer evening.

Terre di Ger, 2011, DOC Friuli Grave, Cabernet Franc Restricted yields in the vineyard translate into a wine that is brimming with the best of what Cabernet Franc has to offer. Intense aromas of sweet fruits, red apples, floral violets and lavender lead to a succulent palate. Planted on limestone clay soils in the Vigneti degli Arconi area of the Friuli Grave DOC with 5000 vines per hectare, the fruit fully ripens. After picking and de-stemming, the grapes were left on skins at low temperature for several days before the alcoholic fermentation commenced. The wine was aged for 12 months prior to bottling.

Gavi, 2012, DOCG, Collection Terroirs, Conti Speroni The best examples of wines produced from the Cortese grape are considered to be those cultivated in the Gavi DOCG. After picking, the grapes were gently pressed and fermented at low temperature, producing a wine with fresh lime flavours and depth. Casata Monticello, 2011, DOCG Barbera d’Asti Superiore, Conti Speroni Once considered a common variety with little potential for making great wines, Barbera is now a star in Piemonte.

Its origins and parentage unknown, it was previously believed to have originated in the hills of Monferrato.

However, recent DNA profiling has shown that it is not related to any other varieties from the region, and thus its origin remains unknown. Produced from 100% Barbera, the Conti Speroni 2011 displays intense cherry fruits with relatively soft body, liquorice and bitter cherry flavours.

Casata Monticello, 2011, DOC Barbera d’Alba, Conti Speroni Barbera d’Alba tends to be a more solid, age-worthy wine. The Conti Speroni has a meaty aroma with savoury flavours and a concentrated solid palate with more weight than their Barbera d’Asti. The winery, in the heart of Asti country at Monferrato, is an ancient 17th century villa and is ably run by Giacomo Sperone, aided by his sons Paolo and Antonio.

Barbaresco, 2010, DOCG, Collection Terroirs, Conti Speroni Nebbiolo is the king of grape varieties in Piemonte. It is a very old variety; its earliest mention was in 1268 as Nibiol. Being a particularly late-ripening variety, it must be sited in appropriate locations in order to fully ripen. The best slopes tend to be those with a southern tilt that are between 150 and 300 meters in altitude. It is also quite particular about the soils on which it is grown, doing best on calcareous marls such as those to the north and south of Alba, on the right bank of the Tanaro River. The wine has a complex bouquet with spicy undergrowth, dried fruits and bitter cherries. The palate is soft and rich with a velvety texture, and fine-grained tannins ending on notes of raisins and bitter chocolate.

Terrenostre Dolcetto d’Alba, 2012, DOC, “Va ben” This is a fine example of everything a Dolcetto d’Alba should be. The wine is a deep, bright ruby colour. The red fruits, strawberries and raspberries, practically jump out of the glass and it has a delicious concentrated, yet soft palate. Dolcetto, meaning sweet, comes from the naturally low acidity levels in this grape variety rather than any sweetness in the wine. The grapes ripen up to four weeks earlier than Nebbiolo, making it perfect for cooler, higher sites in Piemonte. The vines for the “Va ben” are cultivated on a hill with predominantly calcareous and clay soils.

Nebbiolo d’Alba, 2011, DOC, Bricco Reala, Bel Colle Quite pale ruby in colour, winemaker Paolo Torchio has made a wine with intense spicy, meaty aromas combined with tarry raisined fruit and vanilla. Traditional in style, it has a light velvety structure and was aged for a year in large oak casks and French Allier barrels. Nebbiolo grows in the sandy vineyards called ‘bricchi’ in Roero on the left bank of the Tanaro River.

Barbaresco, 2010, DOCG, Bel Colle The Bel Colle team, Franco Pontiglione, Giuseppe Priola and Paolo Torchio, has developed a reputation for good Barbaresco and Barolo wines. The 2010 Barbaresco is starting to show some colour development around the rim. On the nose it has developed a tarry, smoky aroma.

Medium-bodied, it is mellow with good balance, soft integrated tannins, and a lingering liquorice finish. The wine was aged in oak casks for two years.

Barolo, 2009, DOCG, Bel Colle The Bel Colle winery is based in Verduno, a district lying close to the northern boundary of the Barolo DOCG. Like Barbaresco, Barolo lies on the right bank of the Tanaro River and is trisected by two small tributaries. The landscape is hilly, with every possible twist and turn creating a multitude of vineyard sites and mesoclimates, although as a lateripening variety, Nebbiolo is quite particular and only suits the best sites. The 2009 Bel Colle Barolo was produced from grapes grown around Verduno. Medium ruby in colour, it has a complex mellow bouquet with elements of dark chocolate, dark fruits and depth. On the palate it is rich and concentrated, remaining fresh and lively and merits more time in bottle to develop further complexity.

Dolcetto d’Alba, 2010, DOC, Vigneti Luigi Oddero e Figli A more serious Dolcetto from Luigi Oddero, rather than the immediately appealing fruity Terrenostre Dolcetto, this wine is more akin to wines produced from its big brothers Barbera and Nebbiolo. The Oddero family has been involved with top quality wines from Langhe in Piemonte since 1878; in 1951, brothers Giacomo and Luigi began bottling their wines. The grapes were cultivated in the Collaretto and La Morra districts on southern exposed slopes of relatively shallow calcareous marl alternating with mixed sand and clay strata; the soil is rich in magnesium salts and manganese oxide. The wine is restrained on the nose with spicy floral aromas and savoury flavours.

Langhe Nebbiolo, 2009, DOC, Vigneti Luigi Oddero e Figli With all the characteristics of good Nebbiolo, notes of liquorice and tar, raisins, good weight, balance and firm tannins, this wine merits keeping before drinking and will stand its ground to more expensive Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The vines, cultivated on medium-sized hillsides at an altitude of 250 to 300 meters, are exposed to both morning and evening sun allowing full ripening.

The grapes were hand-picked and scrupulously sorted prior to de-stemming and crushing. Regular pump-overs during fermentation ensured full tannin extraction from the skins.

Mon Ross, 2012, DOCG Barbera d’Asti, Forteto della Luja The family-run Forteto della Luja has been organically managed since the early 19th century. Located in the heart of the Monferrato Astigiano region in the tiny village of Loazzolo at 600 meters, the estate is surrounded by unique and diverse flora and fauna and has been designated as a World Wildlife Fund reserve.

Vines are cultivated on brownish yellow and red soils of predominantly chalky clay or sand. Bright in colour, the subtle aromas of red fruits and floral notes lead to a soft succulent palate with good depth.

Le Grive, 2011, DOC Monferrato, Forteto della Luja It is named Le Grive after the thrushes that feast in the winter months on berries growing on the thick juniper bushes surrounding Forteto della Luja’s vineyards. The boundaries of the Monferrato DOC are similar to those of Barbera d’Asti. Le Grive 2011 was produced from a blend of 80% Barbera and 20% Pinot Noir cultivated on southwest facing slopes. After fermentation the wine was matured for a short period in oak barrels imparting vanilla flavours that combine with dark fruits and a rich dense structure. It is still very young and needs to develop, but if drinking it early, be sure to open it in advance and allow it to air.

Only produced in top years, Podere La Borla is made from 60% Barbera, 35% Croatina (otherwise known as Bonarda) and 5% Pinot Nero. Intensely rich and concentrated, this is a blockbuster and certainly not a run-of-the-mill wine from the Oltrepò Pavese DOC. The vineyards are in the central area of the region with south west and east exposures planted with 4,500 vines per hectare. The earlier-ripening Pinot Nero was picked midSeptember followed by the other two varieties in October.

The wine was aged in second and third fill French oak barrels prior to bottling. Intensely coloured, it has plums, red cherries and spices aromas with rich concentrated body and fine texture.

Villa Mondi Garganega & Chardonnay, 2012, IGT Veneto, Campagnola The local Garganega grape is blended with 20% Chardonnay which adds a nutty quality and a little more body. The grapes are grown on hillside vineyards in the province of Verona. Hand-picked at the end of September, the clusters were gently pressed and fermented at low temperature. A small amount of residual sugar and a touch of spritz make this wine refreshing and appealing.

Villa Mondi Soave Classico, 2012, DOC, Campagnola Soave, Italy’s best-selling white wine, is best enjoyed young. Named after the small town that nestles among vine-covered hills, Soave Classico comes from the original historic production zone. Villa Mondi Corvina Veronese, 2012, IGT, Campagnola Corvina is considered to be the best quality red grape in the Valpolicella region although it is usually blended with Corvinone, Rondinella or Molinara. The variety has good resistance to cold, buds late, but is sensitive to downy mildew, drought stress and sunburn. Cultivated at 300 meters on red calcareous Eocene soils around the village of Marano di Valpolicella, the best grapes were hand-selected, fermented at low temperature and left to macerate for 10 days.

Villa Mondi Valpolicella Ripasso, 2011, DOC, Campagnola This Ripasso is younger and more typical in style than the wine from Le Ragose. It has an intense ruby colour and aromas of red and black cherries. The grapes were handpicked from selected hillside vineyards around Marano di Valpolicella at 200 to 350 meters on calcareous soils. After the initial fermentation, the wine was left to macerate on skins a further 10 days and then racked until February 2012 when the second fermentation on Amarone skins added extra sweetness, alcohol and complexity. It was matured in large oak vats for a year prior to bottling.

Dogarina Carmenère, Campodipietra, 2011, DOC Piave This is an interesting wine with intense floral, leafy and pot-pourri aromas combined with wild red berries and spruce. Until as recently as 2008, Carmenère was mistaken for Cabernet Franc in many Italian vineyards, but it is in fact an old Bordeaux variety. Piave in the Veneto lies north of the city of Venezia. Vines are planted on alluvial soils rich in minerals such as manganese and calcium transported by the river from the Dolomite mountains. The wine was matured in large oak cask and stainless steel tanks prior to bottling and has a long flavour with grippy tannins.

Valpolicella Classico, 2012, DOC, Ca’ La Bionda Ca’ La Bionda is situated in the commune of Marano di Valpolicella in the heart of the classic Valpolicella zone.

The Castellani family cultivates 29 hectares of vines on a hillside facing east at an altitude between 150 and 300 meters. The late-ripening Corvina was blended with Corvinone and Rondinella. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was left to rest on skins for a further 10 days.

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, 2009, DOC, Ca’ La Bionda Intense ruby in colour the aromas of ripe red fruits, bitter cherry and chocolate come through on the nose.

Produced from the very best grapes from older, lowyielding vines, this wine is succulent and concentrated, with great balance and length. The Corvina and Corvinone varieties, with loose bunches and large berries, are particularly suited to drying. After picking in September and October, the grape bunches are placed on racks and are left to dry until January the following year, losing approximately 40% of their weight. The concentrated raisined fruit is then slowly fermented at low temperature followed by maturation for 36 months in large oak barrels.

Valpolicella Classico Superiore, Ripasso, 2009, DOC, I Galli, Le Ragose The wine is produced at the Le Ragose estate, situated at the highest point in the Valpolicella zone at 350 meters.

The vines sit above the clouds on a foggy day, on steep south west facing slopes. For Ripasso, the wine is refermented on Amarone lees the following spring after the harvest in September, providing additional sweetness, alcohol and complexity. Produced from 50% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 20% Corvinone and 5% other local varieties, the wine was aged in large Slovenian oak casks prior to bottling although it has no obvious oak, rather lots of mineral and blackcurrant fruit, and a fine texture.

Maestrina Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore, 2012, DOC, Celli SNC di Sirri & Casadei Società Agricola Deep and gutsy, this Sangiovese di Romagna gives a Tuscan wine a run for its money. It was produced from grapes grown on hillside vineyards, on a mixture of clay and limestone soils, in Bertinoro and Polenta on the eastern side of the Apennine mountains. After a winter with record snowfalls, the year was marked by little rainfall from June to September and high temperatures, resulting in 40% less crop than an average year.

Il Veltro, Nastasio, 2011, IGT Toscana, Col d’Orcia Specially selected to commemorate Opimian’s 40th Anniversary

A Super Tuscan wine in commemoration of Opimian’s 40th anniversary year, it is produced from a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the little known old Tuscan variety Ciliegiolo. The name, meaning cherry in Italian, may be a reflection of the long clusters and large berries or perhaps due to the cherry aromas of the berries. The grapes were left to macerate on skins for 8 to 10 days with fermentation at 26˚C and early bottling to capture all the pure fresh fruit aromas.

Il Veltro, Rosso di Montalcino, 2011, DOC, Col d’Orcia The Orcia River marks the south west boundary of the Brunello di Montalcino area and lends its name to the Col d’Orcia estate through which it runs. One of Montalcino’s most historic wineries, it currently has 140 hectares of vineyards as well as olive groves and other fields, all of which have been farmed organically since 2010.

In 2011, heavy spring rains delayed vegetative growth slightly, but this was followed by a dry summer enabling the Sangiovese grapes, locally known as Brunello, to fully ripen. After fermentation the wine was aged for 12 months in French and Slavonian oak barrels producing an elegant style with red cherry flavours and grainy tannins.

Il Veltro, Brunello di Montalcino, 2005, DOCG, Col d’Orcia We were originally offered and sampled the 2008 Il Veltro Brunello di Montalcino and very delicious it was too. Imagine my dismay when I was subsequently informed that there was too little stock to offer and as a replacement the 2005 was proposed. Knowing 2005 to be an erratic year in Toscana, I have to admit that I was a bit sceptical, but the Il Veltro 2005 is stunning, complex, and subtle with lots of concentration. In fact, as I tasted the sample towards the end of the day, the bottle did not last long over dinner!

Seraphicum, 2011, IGT Toscana The partnership between Giovanni Sacchet and Antonio Zaccheo is successful in producing truly great wines.

The Seraphicum, a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon has a delicious mellow nose, with oodles of black fruits, blackcurrants and blackberries.

On the palate it is fresh yet rich, with depth, balance and a soft velvet structure. The two grape varieties were vinified separately and then blended together into small oak casks as the fermentation was coming to an end; the wine was matured for six months. It is harmonious, complex, and a bargain at the price.

Borgo Alla Terra, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, 2012, DOCG, Geografico The walled medieval hill town of San Gimignano in Toscana south of Firenze is known as the city “delle belle torri”. An important staging post for pilgrims on the way to Rome, it boasted 72 tower houses some as high as 50 meters, built by noblemen as a sign of their wealth.

Unlike other Italian cities, the towers, while fewer in number, continue to dominate the skyline. The vineyards lie on sandstone pebbly soils outside the town. Produced from 100% Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the grapes were gently pressed and fermented at low temperature to produce a wine with fresh lemon and nutty flavours.

Chianti, 2012, DOCG, Geografico Winemaker Lorenzo Landi makes excellent solid Chianti, with bitter cherry aromas and flavour, good concentration and balance. This is a blend of 90% Sangiovese, complemented with 10% Canaiolo grown around the town of San Gimignano on pebbly, sandy, clay soils. Canaiolo was once more popular as a grape variety in Toscana than Sangiovese, but due to its uneven production and difficulties in grafting it has subsequently declined. Its velvety texture and full body help to round out the final blend.

The Geografico cellars are based in the heart of the original Chianti zone delimited in 1716, and are situated close to the town of Radda. The Chianti Classico DOCG has extended far beyond this today. The 2011 is a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo cultivated on calcareous, sandy clay soils with high pebble content. It is richer and more concentrated than the Chianti. The wine was aged in oak for 10 months and has a mellow bouquet with ripe plums, and cherry and chocolate flavours.

The hilltop town of Montepulciano sits atop a limestone ridge at 605 meters, 124 kilometres south of Firenze and the Chianti region. Vineyards surrounding the town produce one of Italy’s finest wines, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, from Sangiovese grapes which are locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. The wine most definitely must not be confused with Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, produced from the less noble Montepulciano grape. Geografico’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a blend of 85% Prugnolo Gentile with a mix of other varieties, namely Colorino, Canaiolo Nero and Merlot.

The wine was aged for 21 months in oak prior to bottling and has intense tarry, smoky characteristics.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico, 2012, DOC, Casa Vinicola S. Piersanti & C. Castelli di Jesi is a fairly large area in central Italy set back from the Adriatic coast. The Verdicchio grapes for this wine come from hilly areas within the province of Ancona close to the Esino River that supplies water to the vineyards on its way flowing into the Adriatic Sea. Piersanti’s wine has fresh aromas of apples, pears and melons with a citrus finish. It is simple and refreshing.

Pontemagno Rosso Piceno, 2012, DOC, Casa Vinicola S. Piersanti & C. The Rosso Piceno DOC produces excellent value red wines from a blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes. The fruit for this wine comes from hilly areas around Ascoli, and produces a wine with red fruits, cherry, chocolate and a hint of leather. It is elegant and more distinctive than most wines at this price level.

Orvieto Classico, 2012, DOC, Fratelli Corsi Orvieto in Umbria was an important ancient Etruscan city which was annexed by Rome in the third century BC. It sits on the flat summit of a butte of volcanic tuff, and beneath it lays a labyrinth of tunnels and caves, and all around it the vineyards that comprise the Orvieto Classico DOC. The Fratelli Corsi blend Trebbiano Toscana with small amounts of Grechetto, Verdello, and white Canaiolo to make a simple, light, fruity white.

Torrebella Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, 2012, DOC, Fratelli Corsi The Abruzzo region in central Italy lies east of Rome, stretching from the heart of the Apennine mountains to the Adriatic Sea. It is mountainous and wild land. The Montepulciano grape is widely planted throughout central and southern Italy, but rarely in the north as it ripens fairly late. In Abruzzo it produces a range of styles. This wine is light and fruity, and contains a small proportion of Sangiovese.

La Ferla Nero d’Avola, 2011, IGP Sicilia, Viticultori Associati di Canicattí A Mediterranean wine from the island of Sicily, this wine has ripe plummy fruits and good body. The indigenous Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s most widely planted red variety, esteemed for its colour, full body and ageing potential.

It thrives on heat and is to be found all over the island.

It was previously exported in bulk and used as a “vin médecin” to add colour and body to other varieties.

The La Ferla grapes are cultivated in the hinterland of Agrigento on the south west of the island looking out to the sea. Produced in a traditional way with pump-overs four times per day, it has a fairly firm finish.
