CELLAR OFFERING 215 Chile, Argentina, the Mâconnais and the Rhône Valley

This cellar offering features a diverse selection of great and interesting wines to enjoy, compare and contrast. Taste Riesling and Pinot Noir produced in the cool climate Casablanca Valley from Viña La Rosa and Villard respectively. Or why not compare Mauricio Lorca’s Temático Reserva Viognier 2012 with Domaine Villabea’s 2011 Condrieu? Unlike many winemaking countries, in 2012 Chile enjoyed a bountiful harvest, the biggest on record and the quality is good. Argentina was not quite so lucky with a very cold winter leading to reduced crop levels, but good quality as well. From the Mâconnais in Southern Burgundy, where Chardonnay is the white grape just as in the Côte d’Or, Paul Sapin brings us fresh, crisp wines at attractive price points, much lower than what is demanded for wines from the heart of white Burgundy. Finally, the Rhône Valley continues on its successful series of good vintages. The majority of the wines in this cellar offering are reds and many of them with the potential for maturing, but there are also fine examples of sparkling, whites, rosés, dessert wine and reds for early drinking. As they say, variety is the spice of life!

Opimian’s Wine Consultant Jane Masters MW is a graduate of Bordeaux’s famous Institut d’Oenologie and was elected to the Institute of Masters of Wine in 1997.

Fluent in French and English, Jane is currently a member of the Council of the Institute of Masters of Wine, regularly speaks at industry seminars and is a Panel Chair for the International Wine Challenge.

Viña La Rosa was established in 1824 by the Ossa family, when Don Francisco Ignacio Ossa y Mercado, a miner from northern Chile, purchased a property for his first born son. The Cornellana property itself was purchased by the family much more recently, in 1991. The rocky terrain had been planted with grapes previously, but had suffered from water shortage. It has now been completely re-structured and water rights transferred.

Cornellana XL 40 Years Red Blend Reserve, 2012, Cachapoal Valley Specially selected to commemorate Opimian’s 40th Anniversary

Made by winemaker Gonzalo Cárcamo and assistant winemaker Cynthia Ortiz this unique blend was specially created to celebrate Opimian’s 40th anniversary. One of the earliest harvests on record, the season was marked by average yields and hot temperatures during February and March. Temperatures cooled during the final stages of maturity with no rain forecast, thus allowing Gonzalo and his team to kick back and wait for full phenolic maturity with no risk of disease. Produced from a blend of four varieties, Carmenère makes up the majority. Floral fruits on the nose lead to a medium-bodied palate. Soft and approachable it is to be enjoyed now or matured for several years. The wine was aged in barrel for six months.

Salmon pink in colour, the Sparkling Rosé is produced from a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The grapes were hand-picked in the early hours of the morning and then left to macerate on skins for 12 hours. The base wine was fermented at low temperature over three to four weeks. Using the Charmat method, the second fermentation and maturation was carried out in pressurized tanks prior to bottling producing fresh red fruit aromas with a refreshing palate and balanced acidity.

Cornellana Sauvignon Blanc, 2012, Cachapoal Valley This simple, approachable aromatic Sauvignon Blanc offers great value for money. Pale in colour with aromas of Galia melons and pears, all the grapes were grown on the Viña La Rosa estate on alluvial soils with fine sandy loam texture. The grapes were night-harvested to preserve fresh aromas and left to macerate five to seven hours.

The Cachapoal Valley located a two and a half hour drive south of Santiago lies between the 33rd and 34th parallels and is only 19 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. It has a Mediterranean climate often compared to that of the Napa Valley. The 2012 was one of the earliest harvests in the Cachapoal Valley due to hot temperatures in February and March. After fermentation the wine was aged on lees for six months with regular stirring adding extra weight and length.

Cornellana Rosé, 2012, Cachapoal Valley Produced from a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Pinot Noir, after harvesting, the grapes were left to macerate giving the wine its pinkorange hue. Fermented at low temperature, the palate is soft, easy and accentuated by a nice fruity flavour with good balanced acidity. Best consumed when young, it is versatile and will pair well with a variety of foods; it is delicious with fresh sushi.

Cornellana Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, 2012, Cachapoal Valley Produced from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot grown in the Cachapoal Valley within the Rapel region, the grapes were harvested by hand the second half of April. In 2012, Viña La Rosa employed new technology and techniques within the vineyard using satellite photographs and electromagnetic conductivity measurements. Deep in colour, the wine has floral notes of Parma violets and cherries.

Cornellana Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012, Cachapoal Valley At the time of tasting, the Cabernet Sauvignon, with a dash of Merlot and Syrah, was a little closed. It is structured and firmer than the Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, but with ripe tannins. The grapes were picked, de-stemmed and crushed, then fermented at 27˚C with regular pump overs. A proportion of the wine was aged for three months in French oak adding more structure.

Merlot has been blended with a small amount of Syrah and Malbec to give a light fruity wine, with red fruits, strawberries and cherries. It has a silky texture and a soft finish. This earlier ripening variety (grapes were picked in the first half of April) with its bigger berries and thinner skin produces appealing wines for early drinking.

Cornellana Carmenère, 2012, Cachapoal Valley The Carmenère grape was first mentioned in Bergerac, France in 1783 as producing low yields and as being vigorous, but not very fertile. Although much was planted in Chile, it was previously believed to be Merlot and was only discovered to be Carmenère in 1994. The variety was abandoned in Bordeaux post-phylloxera due to its poor fruit set and unreliable yields. It was brought to Chile in the mid-19th century and planted as a field blend with Merlot, hence the confusion.

Cornellana Reserve Chardonnay Viognier, 2012, Cachapoal Valley The Cornellana vineyard is managed by Eugenio Maffei who is also responsible for the two other estates La Rosa Peumo and Palmería de Cocalan making up 800 hectares in total. A blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Viognier, the grapes were picked in the early morning. After maceration on skins, 30% of the wine was fermented and aged for nine months in new French oak barrels with the balance fermented in tank.

Cornellana Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, 2012, Cachapoal Valley Intense spice, coffee and chocolate aromas mingle with violets; 50% of the wine was aged in French oak for nine months. On the palate it is structured and dense with good acidity, and long lingering bitter cherry and chocolate flavours. It will mellow with some time in bottle and complement strongly flavoured meat dishes.

Pale yellow in colour, fresh green apple aromas, typical of the Riesling, combine with spices and sherbet. On the palate it has medium weight with fresh lime fruit flavours and good acidity.

Cornellana Barrel Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, 2011, Cachapoal Valley In contrast to 2012, a cold and late spring led to a late harvest in 2011. Cool temperatures at fruit set led to low yields and small berries, therefore the wines are concentrated. Still quite tight at the moment, the Barrel Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot has ripe black fruits and vanilla following nine months ageing in French oak. It is balanced with a fine texture.

The long, cool ripening period has created a wine with complex herbal, bell pepper aromas. Aromatic on the palate it is structured and elegant. It was aged in French oak for nine months.

Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah

A complex blend, this wine is composed of 60% Carmenère, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Syrah. Deep purple in colour, it has floral aromas typical of Carmenère combined with tarry, smoky characteristics. Full-bodied, the Cuvée Gran Reserva has a long, spicy, tarry finish and was aged in new French oak barrels for 12 months.

Casa Nueva Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012, Curicó Valley Produced exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon, the Casa Nueva Rosé is a bright raspberry garnet colour. The fruit was hand-picked into small boxes and sorted at the winery prior to crushing. After eight hours skin contact the juice was slowly fermented at low temperature to produce a vinous style with rosehip aromas, red fruits and a strawberry finish.

Casa Nueva Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012, Curicó Valley The Curicó Valley lies 200km down the Pan American highway heading south from Santiago. The climate here is more temperate with higher rainfall and more risk of frost.

The Echeverría family established vineyards here in the early 1900s on the outskirts of the town of Molina. The grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in large oak vats producing a wine with blackberries, apples and tarry flavours.

Casa Nueva Carmenère, 2012, Curicó Valley The grapes grown on un-grafted selected clones of pre-phylloxera Carmenère rootstock were hand-picked May 4th through May 10th and sorted upon arrival at the winery. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks was followed by malolactic fermentation producing a concentrated wine full of herbs, green peppers and chilli flavours; it is a perfect match for spicy vegetarian dishes and Indian cuisine.

Casa Nueva Sauvignon Blanc Reserva, 2012, Casablanca Valley The 2011 Casa Nueva Sauvignon Blanc Reserva was a roaring success with Opimians and the 2012 is also a great act. Slightly more nettles and herbal than the 2011, it is complex and aromatic with a cocktail of citrus fruit flavours including lemons, grapefruits, limes and mandarins, all showing through.

Casa Nueva Syrah Reserva, 2010, Colchagua Valley Dense purple in colour, dark plummy fruits on the nose combine with savoury olives and spice. The Casa Nueva Syrah Reserva was matured for 12 months in French oak barrels. The grapes were picked April 16th through 30th, and subsequently fermented in stainless steel tanks. Rich and structured, it has the potential to develop a further six years.

This plot of 50 year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines, located by the side of the winery in Molina, produces some of the best wines from the Curicó Valley.

The Casablanca Valley is recognized as Chile’s premium cool climate viticultural region. JeanCharles Villard represents the new generation which has introduced innovative winemaking techniques to create new super-premium wines with structure and elegance.

Thierry Villard is a man of many firsts. He was the first to establish a family premium boutique wine company in Chile in 1989, he was one of the pioneers of the Casablanca Valley and he was the first to plant Pinot Noir. As the agent for Nadalié cooperages in Chile, he also knows a thing or two about oak and has mastered the art of attaining complexity, texture and depth without taking anything away from the fruit. He is now handing over the reins to his son, winemaker Jean-Charles.

Expresión Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, 2012, Casablanca Valley This Sauvignon Blanc has plenty of structure and weight combined with aromatic herbal notes of coriander, nettles and limes with a mineral finish. Harvest in 2012 was early despite a cool spring with the Sauvignon Blanc grapes hand-picked on March 17th. After pressing, the juice was chilled for 24 hours then racked and fermented at low temperature followed by ageing on fine lees for four months prior to bottling.

Expresión Reserve Syrah, 2011, Casablanca Valley This is the first vintage produced of the Expresión Reserve Syrah and it’s a blockbuster! Syrah grown in the Casablanca Valley climate benefits from the cool sea breezes which extends the ripening period. After picking, the grapes were left to macerate for five days at low temperature giving the wine its intense black cherry colour. 65% of the wine was aged in French and American oak barrels for 12 months providing intense coffee and vanilla flavours, which combine with black fruit to create a structured wine with fine texture and a long, smooth finish.

Le Chardonnay Grand Vin, 2011, Casablanca Valley A complex Chardonnay, Burgundian in style, it is brimming with tropical fruits, limes, peaches, lemons and pineapples combined with vanilla cream. A strict selection of the best parcels was carried out and grapes picked by hand in April. The wine was fermented in French oak barrels and underwent malolactic, as in traditional Burgundian winemaking practices, with regular “bâtonnage” or lees stirring.

L’Assemblage Grand Vin, 2010 A blend of no less than six grape varieties, each was vinified separately, and following malolactic fermentation was aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. Only the best barrels were selected for L’Assemblage. The 2009 offered last year was awarded 90 points by Chile’s Descorchados Guide and the 2010 will win awards too, I am sure. Like all Villard’s wines it has a superb fine texture, quality tannins, and oak bringing elegance and complexity. It exudes red cherries and red apple aromas and will mellow over time to fully express itself.

Le Pinot Noir Grand Vin, 2011, Casablanca Valley The cool climate of the Casablanca Valley suits Pinot Noir and Thierry Villard was the man to prove it. The first to plant this grape variety at the time, he says it was impossible to sell until the movie Sideways came along!

It produces a wine style more akin to red Burgundy than other Chilean Pinot Noir. With intense wild strawberries on the nose and spicy potpourri, it is light to mediumbodied on the palate despite its 15, 5% alcohol content.

After eight days cold maceration, the grapes were fermented and punched down daily. The wine was subsequently matured in French oak barrels for 10 months with just 16% new oak adding complexity.

El Noble, Botrytised Sauvignon Blanc, 2010, Casablanca Valley From April onwards, the Casablanca Valley is affected by morning fog rolling in from the Pacific Ocean and caught by the coastal mountain range. By lunchtime the fog dissipates and is replaced by hot sunny afternoons. By mid-afternoon the sea breeze dries out the grape bunches and lowers the ambient temperature creating a perfect environment for the development of Noble Rot. And so the cycle repeats itself daily. The grapes for El Noble are grown in the same vineyard as the Expresión Sauvignon Blanc, but are harvested up to six weeks later, in this case on May 1st. After pressing the highly concentrated juice was slowly fermented in 300L oak casks over eight months. The wine was then aged in the same barrels for a further 26 months, although the oak in no way dominates. Complex, it is refreshing with a pale colour, and vanilla and Galia melon aromas. On the palate it is balanced with fresh grapefruit flavours and a long complex finish.

Blasón de San Javier Cabernet Sauvignon, 2011, Valle del Maule The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for Blasón de San Javier come from a vineyard which is over 100 years old, densely planted and cane-pruned. Close to the Andes, the vines are planted on free-draining silty loam with limited irrigation coming from the melting snow caps. A complex wine with herbal notes of mint, tarragon, vermouth and plum skins, black fruit flavours are more evident on the palate to combine with the herbs and a slightly rustic finish.

Finca La Higuera Red Blend, 2011, Valle del Maule A complex wine with herbs, cola, spice and an old oak bouquet, it is quite firm on the palate with liquorice flavours, ripe mulberries and blackberries, and a good backbone of chewy tannins. A blend of 25% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 20% Syrah, 20% Carignan and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon grown at an average altitude of 280M on alluvial sandy loam soils, the Cabernet Franc was planted in 1890 and is un-irrigated. The wine was matured in new and used French oak barrels for 12 months and was bottled un-fined and unfiltered; as a result it may throw natural sediment.

Alfa Centauri, 2010, Valle del Maule This wine is produced from 120 year old Cabernet Franc (70%) and 100 year old head-pruned and untrellised Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) with 5% Syrah and 5% Carignan. Needless to say the yields in these old vineyards are low, producing great concentration. The wine is a bright vibrant purple and has intense aromas of chocolate, cherries, griottes, and vanilla - a real black forest cake. On the palate it has a fine grainy texture and long finish. It was aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels and was bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

Lírico Torrontés, 2012, Valle de Famatina, La Rioja The light-skinned Torrontés Riojano grape is one of Argentina’s specialities. Although its origins are unclear, it is almost certainly Spanish. The best examples such as this come from the arid and windy Famatina Valley in La Rioja province. Vines are trained in the tall traditional pergola trellis with 2,800 vines per ha. Pale in colour, it has delicious lemon floral aromas. On the palate it is light and fresh with rose petal and jasmine flavours and a soft lingering finish.

Lírico Malbec, 2012, Vista Flores, Valle de Uco, Mendoza At 26,845ha Malbec is the most widely planted quality wine grape variety in Argentina. It was introduced by French agricultural engineer Michel Pouget in 1868.

Originating in Cahors where it is known as Côt, it was quite widely planted in Bordeaux until the 1956 frost killed it off; it was not re-planted. The variety is vigorous and sensitive to “coulure”. Intensely coloured the Lírico Malbec 2012 has intense primary fruits, is light to medium-bodied, and is very moreish. 30% of the wine was aged in oak.

Lírico Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012, Vista Flores, Valle de Uco, Mendoza The Uco Valley located 80km south of the city of Mendoza is one of the most exciting parts of Mendoza province for quality wines. Crops in 2012 were down by up to 30% with fewer clusters on the vines. The Cabernet Sauvignon is cultivated on high vertical-trained vines at a density of 6,850 vines per ha. It was hand-picked the first week of April. Cold night temperatures have produced delicious perfumed notes of violets, lavender and a hint of chocolate. On the palate it has a soft, silky texture with fresh blackcurrants and fine tannins on the finish.

Lorca Opalo Syrah, 2010, Vista Flores, Valle de Uco, Mendoza Produced from 100% Syrah with no use of oak, this is a true expression of the Syrah grape and the Vista Flores terroir. Vines are planted at high density on high vertical trellises and production is severely limited with only one bottle produced per vine. Deep bright purple in colour, it shows virtually no sign of the nearly three years of age. Varietal Syrah aromas of black olives, chocolate and blackcurrants lead to a palate with poise and depth, mineral with fine tannins and ending on long bitter chocolate. This wine will only improve with time.

Temático Reserva Viognier, 2012, Vista Flores, Valle de Uco, Mendoza One of the best Viognier wines I have tasted, it is elegant and complex. Pale yellow in colour, it is a delicious cocktail of fruits with mandarins, limes, peaches and cream. With typical Viognier structure on the palate, it has depth, spicy oak flavours and a long finish. Viognier grapes from Vista Flores were hand-harvested the second week of March.

40% of the wine was fermented in new French oak barrels with the balance in stainless steel tanks.

Temático Reserva Malbec, 2009, Vista Flores, Valle de Uco, Mendoza Hail is the bane of Argentinian winemakers’ lives. Despite the generally arid conditions and low level of rainfall the little rain that does fall often does so during the growing season and as hail. Thus, it was in 2009 when approximately 30% of the crop was lost. Produced from 100% Malbec, the grapes were picked by hand the last week of March. After fermentation the wine was aged for 12 months in 100% French oak barrels. Coconut aromas from the oak meddle with herbal, smoky black fruits. It is intense and rich on the palate with flavours of blackberries and blackcurrants and a long, lingering finish.

Blasón de San Carlos Chardonnay, 2012, Valle de Uco, Mendoza Chardonnay grapes were cultivated around Eugenio Bustos in the province of Mendoza at an altitude of 1,100M. Floral aromas combine with lemon flavours in this wine with a pure, tight structure and a mineral finish.

The grapes were picked at the end of February and fermented in stainless steel. The wine was subsequently aged for three months in French oak barrels.

Blasón de San Carlos Malbec, 2012, Valle de Uco, Mendoza Deep bright purple in colour, the Blasón de San Carlos Malbec has intense ripe fruit aromas of damsons, cooked plums and stewed summer fruits with mulberries and blueberries. Picked from the middle of March, the grape bunches were sorted twice by hand at the winery. Post fermentation the wine was aged for three months in oak barrels and has a fine silky texture with blueberries and crushed raspberry flavours on the finish.

Blasón de San Carlos Malbec Tempranillo, 2012, Valle de Uco, Mendoza Intense blackcurrants and blueberries lead to a structured palate with solid acidity and fresh ripe cassis flavours.

This is a blend of 50% Tempranillo and 50% Malbec with grapes sourced from El Cepillo and La Consulta in Mendoza province. The grapes were picked from the end of March through to the end of April. After sorting at the winery, fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks with 12 days skin contact. The wine was then aged for three months in barrel.

Finca Sophia Red Blend, 2009, Uco Valley, Mendoza

This wine is produced from a blend of 50% Malbec, 35% Tempranillo and 15% Touriga Nacional. 2009 was a warm, dry vintage in Argentina leading to an extended harvest for red varieties. The grapes were hand-harvested April 5th through to the 20th, and sorted at the winery. Fermentation was in stainless steel tanks with an extended 28 days of skin contact. The wine was then aged in oak barrels for 12 months, 50% new, 50% second fill, with 80% French oak and 20% American.

Despite its age, the wine remains tight and needs time to open up. Structured and dense it is elegant with a fine texture, red berry fruits and bitter cherries on the finish.

Only the very best barrels are individually selected to be bottled under the Alfa Crux label. The wine is named after the star in the Southern Cross constellation which is only visible in the Austral Hemisphere. Grapes grown at La Consulta at 1,100M were hand-picked in April.

After cold maceration for five days at 8˚C the grapes were fermented and left on skins for 28 days. Complex with sweet coconut, blackberries, vanilla, cooked summer fruits, tar, raisins and black treacle lead to a succulent palate, rich with firm acidity and a bitter-sweet cherry finish. The wine was aged for 20 months in new oak barrels, 80% French and 20% American. Appealing now, it will continue to develop over five years.

Bourgogne Blanc, Cuvée Prestige, 2012, AOC, Grande Terre To date, I have not had too many opportunities to taste 2012 wines from Burgundy and the reports received are mixed. It seems that the Côte d’Or in particular was hit with a mix of issues, but that the Châlonnais and the Mâconnais fared better. Certainly, if this Cuvée Prestige Bourgogne Blanc 2012 is anything to go by, then that seems to be the case. With pleasing grapefruit and pineapple aromas, it is soft with a crisp limey finish and good acidity – everything you could ask for from a basic Burgundy.

Pouilly-Fuissé, Cuvée Prestige, 2012, AOC, Chemin de La Ronde Pouilly-Fuissé, at the southern end of the Burgundy region, 10 km west of Mâcon, lies on limestone hills around the pale pink rock of Solutré. This prehistoric site has been occupied by man for 55,000 years. It has the potential to produce rich, powerful Chardonnay from densely planted hillside vineyards. The 2012 has fresh apples, nutty and earthy aromas, and a rich structure with good balance.

Domaine Berthet-Rayne, Cairanne, Castel Mireio, 2012, AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages, Michel & André Berthet-Rayne This wine produced at Domaine Berthet-Rayne has all the hallmarks of a good white Rhône wine and could easily be confused with a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Produced from a blend of six grape varieties, Clairette, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, and Bourboulenc, with the Viognier having spent four months in barrel, the wine is restrained by complex aromas with white blossom. Produced from organically grown grapes, it has a typical soft, broad structure with a firm finish.

Domaine Villabea, 2011, AOC Condrieu Situated on granite soils on the steep terraced slopes overhanging the Rhône River and the main auto route south are the old Viognier vines of Domaine Villabea.

There is no choice but to harvest these grapes by hand, such is the incline. After picking the juice was fermented in old oak barrels and matured for 10 months resulting in a wine with floral, spicy aromas with white blossoms, and peaches on the palate.

Clos de la Grange des Moines Rosé, 2012, AOP Costières de Nîmes Vibrant in colour and bursting with red fruits, raspberries and cherries, this is a delicious rosé. A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault, a combination of direct pressing and skin contact was used. It is soft and refreshing with a fresh crisp finish. Costières de Nîmes is located at the south western end of the Rhône Valley bordering the flatlands of the Camargue.

Clos de la Grange des Moines Rouge, 2011, AOP Costières de Nîmes A gold medal winner in local wine competitions, this is produced from 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache. It is quite restrained, but appealing with earthy dark fruits, a soft juicy attack and quite piercing acidity which will complement fatty dishes. Produced using traditional methods, fermentation took place at 26˚C with regular pump overs and 10 days maceration.

Vincent Rochette Sélection, 2011, AOC Côtes du Rhône Vincent Rochette produces rich concentrated wines. The 2011 Côtes du Rhône is deep, bright purple in colour. On the nose earthy undergrowth aromas combine with black treacle and liquorice. A blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Carignan, the vines are 60 years old and grapes are all farmed using biodynamic techniques. On the palate, it is soft, rich and concentrated with similar treacly flavours. The 15ha vineyard lies on foothills facing north east-north west at 150 to 200M.

Domaine des Romarins, 2011, AOC Côtes du Rhône, Xavier Fabre Four generations of the Fabre family are currently at Domaine des Romarins at Domazan in the southern Rhône close to the Roman Pont du Gard. Xavier Fabre has been running the property since 2007 having taken over from his parents Francis and Claire. Produced from a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, all the grapes were hand-picked and de-stemmed.

Domaine des Romarins, Signargues, 2011, AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages, Xavier Fabre A rich, structured wine produced from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, the grapes were de-stemmed and fermented on skins for 25 days and part-matured in oak.

2011 was the third consecutive quality vintage in the Rhône, after an early and warm spring. Cool weather in July slowed things down with heat returning in August and a long Indian summer through October.

Domaine du Val des Rois, Valréas, Signature, 2011, AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages, Emmanuel Bouchard Vibrant plum in colour, this wine is restrained on the nose, a reflection of its terroir and a result of vineyard conditions. Valréas is the most northern of the Côtes du Rhône Villages. It is exposed to the Mistral wind and the climate is relatively cool. The vineyards are currently in conversion to organic farming. 75% Grenache was blended with 25% Syrah. Emmanuel Bouchard has produced a rich wine with discrete floral and black cherry aromas. Domaine La Ferme Saint-Martin, Les Terres Jaunes, 2011, AOC Beaumes-de-Venise, Guy & Thomas Jullien The vineyards of the Beaumes-de-Venise appellation lie on the slopes at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, a dramatic series of jagged peaks formed by horizontal strata of Jurassic limestone forced upwards and subsequently eroded. Domaine La Ferme Saint-Martin consists of 23ha of vines planted at an altitude of 400M with panoramic views in all directions. The grapes are grown organically and the wines produced are powerful and rich albeit with restraint. The 2011 Les Terres Jaunes has black cherry and dark chocolate aromas with a hint of liquorice. Concentrated with great depth of flavour, it is delicious for early drinking and has the potential to age.

Domaine des Coteaux des Travers, Labartalas, 2011, AOC Rasteau, Robert Charavin A fairly firm, solid wine, it requires some time in bottle to mellow. Produced from old vines aged between 40 and 60 years, it is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 20% Carignan cultivated on clay limestone soils with south, south-west exposure. Tarry aromas lead to a solid structure. Robert Charavin manages the 11ha of vineyards in Rasteau that produce the fruit that goes into the cuvée Labartalas, and which have been organically certified since 2010.

Domaine du Murinais, Vieilles Vignes, 2011, AOC Crozes Hermitage, Catherine & Luc Tardy Luc Tardy has produced yet another blockbuster. This is a fine example of Crozes Hermitage although it needs more time to mellow and unleash its full potential. It is complex with smoky creosote and tar, spices, herbs, dried rosemary, thyme and oregano. Luc’s vines are situated in the southern part of the appellation on a limestone plateau scattered with “galet” stones. Produced from 100% Syrah, between 35 and 50 years old, the wine was aged for 12 months in oak, 50% in 225L barrels and 50% in larger 600L casks. On the palate it has taut acidity balanced with a long, lingering smoky finish.

Les Reines, 2011, AOC Saint Joseph, Gilles Flacher Gilles Flacher uses traditional methods in the 7ha vineyard and the winery to produce elegant complex wines. Syrah is cultivated on granite soils with south, south-east exposition. Spicy aromas of ginger, allspice and vanilla lead to a palate full of blackberries and fresh apples, with firm acidity and a long distinctive finish.

Located outside the village of Charnas, this Domaine has been in Gilles’ family since 1806.

Château de Montmirail, Le Graminier, 2011, AOC Gigondas, SCEV Maurice Archimbaud-Monique Bouteiller Opulent with a succulent sweet palate and heady alcohol at 15%, this wine has great charm and appeal; it is a fine Gigondas with notes of ginger and red fruits. Château de Montmirail possesses 25ha in the Gigondas appellation on limestone clay soils. Le Graminier 2011 was produced

by Philippe Bouteiller from 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. The grapes were sorted at picking then partially de-stemmed and crushed followed by fermentation for 12 to 14 days. It was subsequently matured for 15 months prior to bottling.

Domaine des Cigalons, 2011, AOC Châteauneufdu-Pape, SCEA Emile Raymond There are eighteen permitted grape varieties in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Although Grenache tends to dominate blends with over 70% of vine plantings, this does explain some of the differences in style between properties. Domaine des Cigalons uses four of the permitted grape varieties in its Châteauneuf-du-Pape with unusually high proportions of Mourvèdre and Cinsault, 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Cinsault, 5% Syrah, giving the final wine a strong herbal, meaty characteristic and firm tannin structure. 22ha are cultivated in the north of the appellation on clay limestone soils with a high content of “galets roulés” associated with the appellation.

Domaine Villabea, 2010, AOC Côte-Rôtie Old Syrah vines cling on for dear life to the southfacing terraced granite slopes of Côte-Rôtie. Domaine Villabea possesses less than one hectare of vines in this prestigious appellation. Combined with 10% Viognier, the varieties are picked together by hand and fermented over a minimum of 14 days before ageing in old oak casks for eighteen months. Perfumed spices, incense and mown hay mingle together. Medium-bodied, it has soft tannins, balanced acidity and a long incense flavour. Delicious now, it will only improve.
