Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, Park Güell is a garden complex located in the Gràcia region of Barcelona.

The entire park is made of stone, ceramic, and natural elements. The entrance of the Doric Temple, or Hypostyle Hall, reveals a hallway with hollow columns that serve as storm drain pipes and mimic the natural growth of forest trees.

Underneath the tiled seating area, looking up, colourful sun mosaics are scattered across the ceiling, it too embedded with thousands of tiles giving it a snake skin appearance.

Opimian’s Wine Consultant Jane Masters MW is a graduate of Bordeaux’s famous Institut d’Oenologie and was elected to the Institute of Masters of Wine in 1997.

Fluent in French and English, Jane is currently a member of the Council of the Institute of Masters of Wine, regularly speaks at industry seminars and is a Panel Chair for the International Wine Challenge.

Harvest in Europe kicked off in September for most places. The reports that were coming in suggested that crops were down in many regions due to drought and volatile weather conditions; this is especially true for Spain and Portugal. As if these countries didn’t have enough woe already with struggling economies and difficult trading conditions! Despite this, people remain optimistic and there are some great wines from the last few vintages to be had from both countries. We start this cellar offering with wines from Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr based in the heart of Alsace. You will find wines mostly from the 2011 vintage which are already showing very well, particularly the Pinot Gris Grand Cru Rosacker. To commemorate Opimian’s 40th Anniversary, two wineries have produced special blends.

Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr oenologist Nicolas Garde has created the Riesling Cuvée des Quarante Printemps, a blend of the fruit from two Grand Cru vineyards. From Spain, Bodegas y Viñedos O. Fournier presents the Alfa Spiga Opimian 40th Anniversary Blend, made with specially selected barrels of Tinta del País from the 2007 vintage.

Winemaker Nicolas Garde has specially created this wine to celebrate Opimian’s 40th Anniversary, a half and half blend of Rieslings from two Grand Cru sites.

Rosacker brings freshness and crisp acidity, due to the characteristic pale limestone soils, while the deep clay marl soils of Schoenenbourg, in the neighbouring village of Riquewihr, bring weight, depth, and length. Still very young and closed when tasted, this wine will develop and open up over the next few years.

Crémant d’Alsace, Calixte Brut, AC Crémant d’Alsace, NV

Awarded a gold medal in Paris, the Crémant Calixte Brut is produced from a blend of three traditional Alsace varieties together with Chardonnay, which is only permitted for Crémant in the region. After second fermentation in bottle the wine was aged prior to disgorgement, adding a yeasty doughy characteristic. It is well-balanced and the 9 grams per litre of sugar are perfectly offset by the wine’s natural acidity.

Peter Weber, Brut Rosé, AC Crémant d’Alsace, NV This special edition Brut Rosé is made from 100% Pinot Noir. A short maceration of the skins gives the wine its salmon pink colour. With red fruits on the nose and a fine mousse with small bubbles, it is complex with the depth typical of Pinot Noir. The wine was aged for a year prior to disgorgement and release, and has a touch more sweetness than the Calixte Brut.

Edelzwicker Sélection, 2011, AC Alsace Edelzwicker is a term used for a blend of grapes, often those considered lesser in quality such as Chasselas and Knipperlé. In this case three of the so called “noble” varieties, Muscat, Riesling, and Pinot Gris, have been blended with Pinot Blanc. Quite light with aromas of melons and pears, it is fresh with a slight spritz on the palate and is perfectly ready for drinking.

Riesling Réserve, 2011, AC Alsace In contrast to Germany, which traditionally made low alcohol wines with residual sugar, Alsace made its name by producing dry wine styles. However, it must be said that these stereotypes have become somewhat blurred over the last few years. The Riesling Réserve has limey fruit, is dry and balanced on the palate, and ends on a crisp green apple note. In 2011, after a cold winter, spring came early with warm temperatures followed by a wet and cool July and August. Fortunately the sun and heat returned in September and October, leading to fully ripe fruit.

Muscat Réserve, 2011, AC Alsace Here is a dry Muscat with just a few grams of sweetness.

It has a refined elegant lemon citrus nose, light body with zesty acidity and freshly squeezed lemon and lime flavours. It is produced not from one, but two varieties of Muscat, the oldest variety being the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and the more recent Muscat Ottonel.

Sylvaner Cuvée Prestige, 2011, AC Alsace Sylvaner, considered one of the lesser grape varieties of the region, can sometimes be fairly neutral and acidic.

This example has clean fruit with a mineral characteristic and good depth. Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr is one of the best cooperatives in Alsace. Its members own 200 hectares of vines and winemaker Nicolas Garde gives advice on how to get the best out of them.

Pinot Blanc, Cuvée Prestige, 2011, AC Alsace Pinot Blanc, the most widely planted variety in Alsace, can be an extremely food-friendly white that is good with seafood, pasta, risottos or onion tart! When tasted, the 2011 was quite full-bodied with a honeyed nose, and soft white fruits and melon flavours. Ageing on lees has given it a broad structure. Relatively low in alcohol at just below 12%, it is completely dry.

Pinot Gris Cuvée Prestige, 2011, AC Alsace The characteristic smokiness of Alsace Pinot Gris, which differentiates it from wines made from this grape in other regions, is really present in the Cuvée Prestige. It is combined with fresh melon fruits, some sweetness and a long finish. Believed to be a mutant of Pinot Noir, the Pinot Gris grapes can range in colour from grey-blue, hence its name, to brownish-pink.

Gewurztraminer, 2011, AC Alsace, Médaille d’Or Colmar The Grand Concours des Vins d’Alsace takes place in Colmar in April each year. It has been going since 1948 and aims to single out the best wine of Alsace from each variety. Gewurztraminer is full-flavoured and sometimes tends to be flabby and lacking balance. Hunawihr’s is more restrained in nature, with lemons and a mineral style. Despite its 17 grams of sugar per litre and 13% alcohol, it feels light and fresh on the palate, perfectly balanced by the acidity; no surprise it won Gold!

Pinot Noir, 2011, AC Alsace, Médaille d’Or Paris Pinot Noir is the only red grape variety which is permitted in Alsace although it is notoriously difficult to work with in both the vineyard and the winery. Winemaker Nicolas Garde previously worked in Burgundy and since arriving in Alsace has always been passionate about producing quality Pinot Noir. He was rewarded earlier this year with a gold medal at the Concours Général Agricole Paris.

Pinot Gris, Lieu-dit Muehlforst, 2011, AC Alsace The selected vineyard location of Muehlforst dominates the village of Hunawihr, lying at an altitude of between 260 to 310 meters. This site, with full south orientation and its limestone clay, was already recognized in medieval times for the potential quality of its grapes. The 2011 Pinot Gris has intense ripe fruit with quince and toffee.

On the palate it has great depth with the 15 grams of sweetness perfectly balanced by the acidity, leaving a long apricot finish.

Gewurztraminer, Lieu-dit Muehlforst, 2011, AC Alsace Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr has a total of 11 hectares at Muehlforst. This warm, deep terroir, similar to the Grand Cru Rosacker, is ideal for the cultivation of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. It has an intensely aromatic fruit nose, with lemon, mango, floral and mineral aromas. The palate is rich and honeyed with 29 grams of sugar and a syrupy texture, yet it remains elegant, lingering on floral and spicy vanilla notes.

Riesling, Vieilles Vignes, 2011, AC Alsace The additional vine age, 25 to 35 years, and the lower yields are really reflected in the concentration and power of the Vieilles Vignes Riesling. Typical lime fruits on the nose lead to a palate with pure solid Riesling structure, depth and weight. The wine has a delicious crunchy green apple and lime finish with the potential to age for years to come.

Pinot Gris, Grand Cru Rosacker, 2010, AC Alsace The 26 hectares of Grand Cru Rosacker sit in the village of Hunawihr. The clay limestone soil contains dolomitic pebbles with sandy scree from the Vosges Mountains.

The Grand Cru is also home to the famous Clos Sainte Hune. Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr cultivates a total of eight hectares in Rosacker, of which 1.5 hectares are Pinot Gris. The vines face east/south east at an altitude of 260 to 330 meters. 2010 was not an easy vintage, with cold wet periods during the summer, resulting in heterogeneous wine quality. However, this wine is a success with spicy honeyed notes and great depth due to the quality of this terroir.

Riesling, Vendanges Tardives, 2009, AC Alsace An exceptional wine with honey nose, smoky notes, and mango combined with earthiness, the 2009 vintage was one of great maturity, and that shines through. After a long and cold winter, bud-burst was late, followed by an abnormally warm April and May and a hot sunny start to the summer. The grapes for the Vendanges Tardives were picked on October 30th, two months after the start of harvest. The 43 grams of sweetness are perfectly balanced by the acidity and the wine has the potential to age ten or more years.

Bodegas Concavins SA Montblanc, Barberà de la Conca, Catalonia Since our last cellar offering featuring Spain, the owner of Clos Montblanc, Luis Carbonell, sadly passed away. The estate is now owned by his daughter Pilar. 2012 will be the first vintage without Luis, but Pilar is actively involved and the team, led by Antonio Casablancas and winemaker Josep Vadrí, is keen to ensure his spirit carries on. Luis leaves a legacy behind, having completed a thorough renovation of the estate and its buildings.

Montblanc 362 is a blend of 60% Viura from 30 year old vines with 40% Chardonnay. Yields in 2012 were low, and in the case of Chardonnay down an incredible 40% on last year, due to the on-going drought. The wine is intensely appealing and aromatic with peardrops and white fleshy fruits. Medium-bodied it has nice weight deliciously balanced by the acidity.

Produced from a blend of early ripening Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon harvested mid-October, winemaker Josep Vadrí carries out fermentation in stainless steel tanks at low temperature followed by a long maceration of the skins. Intensely coloured with concentrated aromas of blueberries, blackberries and violets, the wine is medium-bodied with firm tannins. It was aged for a short time in American oak barrels.

Clos Montblanc Chardonnay, Premium, 2012, DO Catalunya Chardonnay grapes were grown on several vineyards below the Sierra de Miramar on limestone soils with picking this year carried out over two nights around August 15th. The juice was left in contact with the skins for several hours prior to pressing. Fermentation was completed in three different types of oak barrels coming from Alliers, Nevers and the Tronçais forests giving it an intense toffee and buttery aroma with pineapple flavours.

Rich and concentrated it has a long lemon and pineapple finish.

Gran Clos Montblanc Unic, Trepat, 2011, DO Conca de Barberà Trepat is a local grape variety that typifies the Conca de Barberà region. Previously used as part of a blend in Cava, producers have recently been making single varietal still wines. Only a small quantity has been produced by Clos Montblanc since the 2010 vintage. Trepat is believed to be a local variant of Garnacha. Clos Montblanc farms these grapes organically on the family estate, with picking in late October, followed by ageing in oak.

Clos Montblanc Xipella, Premium, 2010, DO Catalunya Clos Montblanc sits among the leading estates in the region. Xipella, produced from three indigenous varieties, Garnatxa (Grenache), Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Samso (Carignan) with Syrah, has a lovely, mellow vanilla and blackberry nose. Soft and juicy on the palate it has fine texture with good concentration. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was matured in oak for twelve months.

Clos Montblanc Merlot, Premium, 2009, DO Conca de Barberà This wine comes from a specific four hectare plot at an altitude of 560 meters on the slopes of the Miramar Mountains. Merlot grapes were harvested in the middle of October. In order to maximize concentration, some of the juice was drawn off. Fermentation in tank was followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel, with subsequent ageing for 12 months in American oak. Deep plum in colour, with earthy undergrowth and leafy developed aromas, typical of Merlot, it has good acidity and firm gripping tannins on the finish.

Clos Montblanc Masia Les Comes Reserva, 2008, DO Conca de Barberà 2008 was a very good vintage in Conca de Barberà.

Sourced from the family’s own estate planted in 1988, on terraces at 700 meters, the distinctiveness of the region comes through in the tight structure and concentration with typical herbal Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot flavours. The Merlot was picked in mid-September with the Cabernet Sauvignon a month later. After fermentation in tank the wine aged in barrel for 18 months. It has a fine tannin structure.

Vinoselección Vinoselección head office is situated in a very nice quartier of Madrid The Madrid. I spent a morning in the tasting room there with Maribel

Gómez, her two buyer colleagues and the technical director, tasting a full selection of wines from around Spain. Times in Spain are hard. Unemployment is high and people are demonstrating in the streets against austerity measures. Yet, somehow the Spanish continue to battle on and keep their sense of fun; there are some really good wines to be had.

A special selection produced for Opimian’s 40th Anniversary by Bodegas y Viñedos O. Fournier, Tinta del País grapes from old bush vines grown at 800 to 850 metres were hand-picked and sorted at the winery. The grapes were left to macerate at low temperature and then fermented in oak vats. The wine was aged 20 months in oak barrel, 80% French and 20% central European, producing a wine with wild herbs and floral notes. Rich with depth on the palate it is tight and powerful and will mellow with some bottle age. This wine has great potential.

Viña Ludy Albariño, 2011, DO Rias Baíxas, Viña Ludy Tucked away in the north western corner of Spain, close to the border with Portugal, is the DO Rias Baíxas. The strong Atlantic influence results in this being one of the wettest regions in Spain with an annual rainfall of 1600 millimetres and mild temperatures. The predominant variety is the thick-skinned Albariño grape. The Viña Ludy 2011 has typical aromas of white fruits, apples and herbs.

Restrained on the palate, is has a deliciously crisp, long lemon and lime citrus finish.

Sanz Sauvignon, 2011, DO Rueda, Vinos Sanz Rueda has seen dramatic expansion over the last few years, but Vinos Sanz has a history that goes back over six generations. The region has an extreme continental climate with cold winters and short hot summers. The average altitude of the region is at 600 to 700 meters.

Low fertility of the soils, and the difference between day and night temperatures all contribute to making some of Spain’s finest white wines, with Vinos Sanz producing some of the region’s best. The 2011 Sauvignon has a delicious flinty, gooseberry and mineral earthiness.

Portia Vendimia Seleccionada, 2009, DO Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Portia Part of the Faustino group, going forward the Portia wines will be made in a new winery inaugurated last year.

Built in the shape of a clover, each of the three points corresponds to vinification, fermentation or maturation.

Designed by Norman Foster, the building was awarded best construction design in Europe by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The wines are equally as impressive. Produced from 100% Tinto del País, the wine spent 10 months in oak barrels, 65% American and 35% French.

Valduero Crianza, 2009, DO Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Valduero Like Rioja, many wineries in the Ribera del Duero DO buy in grapes. This is not so at Bodegas Valduero. Since its set up in 1984 it has applied the principle of growing all its grapes. The 200 hectares of vineyards are around Gumiel de Mercado in the heart of the Ribera region and all are head-pruned bush vines. Grown at 850 meters, frost in the run up to harvest is a serious concern as temperature drops rapidly at night, often close to freezing.

It has a complex bouquet with floral, herbal tarragon, and smoky and vanilla notes. The wine was aged for 15 months in French and American oak, which is a little dominant at the moment, but will be tamed with time.

Valduero 6 Años Reserva Premium, 2004, DO Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Valduero Named after the six years it takes to produce, this wine was aged in barrel for 36 months in four different types of oak and further aged in bottle prior to release. Intense in colour, the nose is restrained, but complex with herbs, fruit cake, rich ripe black fruits and vanilla. On the palate it is concentrated with great depth and a cassis finish.

Produced from 35 to 40 year old Tempranillo vines, the grapes were hand-picked the first week of October.

Sonsierra Crianza, Vendimia Seleccionada, 2009, DOCa Rioja, Bodegas Sonsierra Bodegas Sonsierra is a cooperative founded in the early 60’s. A sub region of the Rioja Alta, it groups together 570 hectares of vineyards on hillside terraces from 420 to 770 metres. The name Sonsierra, meaning “under the mountains”, refers to the protection afforded to the region by the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range. Produced from 100% Tempranillo, the wine spent one year in new American oak barrels, imparting a distinctly coconut characteristic that mingles with meaty flavours and chewy tannins which will soften.

Foronda Reserva, 2008, DOCa Rioja, Viña Foronda The Foronda Reserva 2008 has herbal, bell pepper and blackberry notes. Despite the 26 months spent in oak barrels, it does not have so much overt vanilla toast as mellow spices on the nose. There is good depth on the palate with the weight and balance to age further.

Ruth Rodriguez has made an elegant wine. Tempranillo grapes were grown on a small plot of old vines close to Villabuena in the Rioja Alavesa. The wine was matured in a mix of 70% American and 30% French oak barrels and will continue to develop over two to four years.

Faustino Selección de Familia, 2010, DOCa Rioja, Bodegas Faustino Despite being a large group now which includes Portia (see Lot 6878), Bodegas Faustino is still family owned.

With 650 hectares of vineyards in the Rioja Alavesa region, this wine is a special selection produced from 100% Tempranillo. Coming from the excellent 2010 vintage it has savoury, marmite meaty aromas. Aged for nine months in medium toasted American oak casks followed by a further five months in medium-high toasted French Allier oak, it has a pure mineral quality and ends with cassis. It will mellow over the next couple of years.

Orot Viñas Viejas, 2009, DO Toro, Bodegas Toresanas The wines of Toro, lying to the west of the Ribera del Duero, tend to be a little more rustic, with some astringent tannin coming from the Tinta de Toro grape, a local strain of Tempranillo. A play on words, Orot is Toro backwards, this wine has an herbal, floral, and almost cola quality on the nose, opening up in the glass to succulent blackberries and chewy tannins.

Gran Colegiata Reserva, 2006, DO Toro, Bodegas Fariña Manuel Fariña was one of the proponents that put Toro on the map, making wine here long before many of the wineries were even a twinkle in their winemaker’s eye. On their 300 hectares of vineyards, there is a high proportion of old Tinta de Toro vines, up to 120 years old with some pre-phylloxera. On the outskirts of the medieval town of Toro, the label depicts the old Romanesque church in the centre. The 2006 Gran Colegiata Reserva has a smoky, liquorice, vanilla and savoury bouquet. Rich and textured with dried fruits and herb flavours, it is showing nicely and will remain at its peak for five years. It was matured 18 months in American oak.

Clan, Barrica 15 Meses, 2008, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León, Bodegas y Viñedos Los Oteros Raoul Perez is one of Spain’s leading bright lights. Born into a Bierzo winemaking family, he has made a name as one of Spain’s leading consultants; his clients include Bodegas Estefanía in Bierzo. Produced from the unusual indigenous Prieto Picudo grape, the vines are between 80 and 100 years old and are grown at 836 meters. The colour shows some development while the nose is full of cooked red cherries, other berry fruits, vanilla and leather. It is soft and spicy on the palate with chewy tannins. The wine was fermented in oak vats and spent 15 months in French casks.

In the south of Spain at Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón in Albacete is the Los Aljibes estate. The winery is surrounded by 178 hectares of vineyards on shallow sandy soils over limestone bedrock. The VA 2010 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo and Garnacha Tintorera. Deep plum in colour, it has earthy red fruit and spice aromas. Soft on the palate with mellow flavours and ripe tannins, it was matured six months in large oak vats.

Parxet Edición Limitada Brut Reserva, 2009, DO Cava Parxet is in Tiana, in the Alella region north east of Barcelona, close to the sea. The region is the most eastern DO in Catalonia and is formed by a great mass of granite with generally poor sandy Saulo soils. The region traditionally grows Pansa Blanca, similar to Xarel-lo, which is blended with Macabeu and Parellada to produce Parxet Cava with limey mineral elements. It has a soft creamy texture with fresh fruits and firm acidity.

Enate Gewürztraminer, 2011, DO Somontano, Viñedos y Crianzas Del Alto Aragón Lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains, the Somontano region in the north east of Spain is protected from cold northern air by the Sierra de Guara and Sierra de Salinas. This region has viticultural roots dating back to the Roman Empire and during the middle ages vineyards covered the whole province. A small amount of Gewürztraminer is made here, producing an intensely aromatic, rich wine with classic bergamot and lychee flavours, perfectly balanced with fresh acidity. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but a stunning example if you enjoy this wine style.

Enate Rosado Cabernet Sauvignon, 2011, DO Somontano, Viñedos y Crianzas Del Alto Aragón The Enate rosé is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep in colour, aromas of crushed strawberry juice mix with herbs and chilli. The same flavours show through on the palate, as this is quite a serious wine, with lots of fruit, juicy acidity, and a long strawberry finish. This modern winery has been winning awards for its wines since being established in 1991.

Enate Edición Limitada, 2009, DO Somontano, Viñedos y Crianzas Del Alto Aragón 85% of the wines produced at Enate are red with all grapes grown on their own 400 hectares of vineyards around the villages of Salas Altas, Salas Bajas and Cregenzan. This limited edition 2009 offers great value for money; it is a very classy wine. The ruby colour is starting to show some development. It is restrained with mellow aromas of cherries and herbs, with a very fine texture. Produced from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blended with Tempranillo, the wine was aged for 12 months in barrel.

Braó, Vinyes Velles, 2010, DO Montsant, Acústic Celler It was with great pleasure that I met Albert Jané by pure fluke at Vinisud in Montpellier earlier this year.

Having tasted and admired his wines over the last few years, I introduced myself and we spent the next hour or so tasting his entire range. Albert is passionate about the Montsant region and especially about old vines.

He only produces red wine from old Carignan (Sams) and Grenache (Garnatxa). Complex in every way, it has intense raisins, fruit cake, and ginger, nutmeg, and apple aromas. The obvious acidity keeps the wine fresh with cherry flavours and great length giving one the desire to take another sip ….and another sip… and another sip.

José Gaspar continues to make his own wines on the small 11 hectare Quinta da Barreira estate close to Lisbon using Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon. He also oversees winemaking throughout the Tejo region. Last year he reported on the great potential of the 2011 crop. Having tasted it a year afterwards he was absolutely right. Once again Portugal, like Spain has been plagued by drought.

The crop at Quinta da Barriera will be up on last year, but still 10% below an average year.

Quinta da Barreira, Taurus, 2011, Vinho Regional Alentejano This wine is made in a traditional style, in a traditional way with long skin maceration, from traditional grapes, Aragonez (yet another name for Tempranillo), Moreto and the local speciality Trincadeira. Taurus has herbs and cumin aromas on the nose, and a soft juicy attack on the palate with ripe cherry flavours and a firm chewy tannin finish; it is rustic in style.

Quinta da Barreira Reserva, 2011, Vinho Regional Lisboa This time last year, José predicted that the 2011 wines were going to be better than 2009 and 2010, and I have to admit that on tasting this I was impressed. Still with very young fruit on the nose, it has a sensual silky texture with olive, black fruits and spicy oak flavours. This wine will only improve with a couple of years in bottle.

Produced from the indigenous Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine was aged in American oak for six months. Bottled with minimal filtration it may throw a deposit.

Quinta da Barreira, Doudão, 2011, DOC Douro A blend of three traditional Portuguese grapes, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo) and Touriga Nacional, the 2011 seems more up front and fruity than past years. Ripe summer fruit aromas lead to a soft juicy palate becoming a bit firmer, but the focus is definitely on fruit; it is ready for early drinking. The Doudão was vinified in traditional stone lagares and subsequently aged in French oak barrels.

Serra Vinho Verde, 2012, DOC Vinho Verde Harvest in Portugal was very late this year and yields below average due to drought and low temperatures during the growing season. The Vinho Verde 2012 is elegant with a refreshing spritz on the palate and nice acidity. It is perfect for light dishes or served as an aperitif.

Produced from four local varieties to the Minho region in the far north west corner of Portugal, fermentation was at low temperature producing a wine low in alcohol.

Dão Serra, 2010, DOC Dão The wines from the Dão region have changed dramatically over the last decade, moving to more fruity fragrant styles while retaining their characteristic power.

Protected from the Atlantic by the Caramulo Mountains and by the Serra da Estrela in the south east, Dão is effectively a granite plateau with a continental climate.

The deeply coloured Alfrocheiro was blended with Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, resulting in a wine which is a little mute on the nose, but rich and juicy on the palate with firm tannins.

Herdade de Gâmbia, 2011, Regional Península de Setúbal, Sociedade Agrícola Boas Quintas The Setúbal region, south east of Lisbon, lies between two estuaries, Tejo and Sado, and traditionally used Moscatel to produce sweet fortified wines. More recently, drier fresher styles are the trend. The Herdade de Gâmbia 2011 was produced from Moscatel and the local Fernão Pires, and after a short skin contact the juice was fermented, leaving just a few grams of residual sugar. A delicately aromatic nose of rose petals and lemon, it is soft and light on the palate with a long lemon finish.

At the moment, the Estopa Reserva is closed with just a hint of black fruit aromas. It is tight on the palate, with great balance, weight and depth.

production of Port started in the Douro Valley in the Churchill, Graham The 1600s. There are official archives detailing the shipment of Port to Britain as far back as 1658. The Port region was a Vila Nova de Gaia remote area and has only been accessible by road since the 1980s. Previously, barrels were transported down the Douro by boat to the Port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia for blending and ageing. Although its founder John Graham comes from a dynasty of Port shippers, the history of Churchill, Graham is much younger. In 1981 it was the first new Port house to be established in over 50 years. Ever since, it has had a very strong focus on producing quality Ports from the very best vineyard sites.

All its Ports are produced at the Quinta da Gricha winery situated on the south bank of the river Douro between Pinhão and Tua. This is in the original Port region, known as the Cima Corgo sub-region, with its steep schist terraces. The reserve port is made from a field blend of many varieties, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca and Tinta Francisca. Deep plum in colour, the Reserve has ripe plummy fruits, some fruit cake, and raisins and vanilla flavours. It was aged in seasoned oak vats for three years before bottling. Ready for drinking now, there is no need to decant.

Opimian Late-Bottled Vintage Port, 2007 Each port vineyard is classified from “A” down to “F” according to altitude, location, yield, soil inclination, orientation, as well as the age, density, training and variety of the vines. Churchill, Graham only uses premium “A” grade grapes. After a rainy winter, spring and early summer were warm and humid in 2007. Temperatures often exceeded 40ºC in July and August, but some rainfall at the end of the month allowed the grapes to reach full maturity. The young Port was blended and then matured in large oak vats for four years. Aromas of dried fruits, raisins and smoky characteristics are followed by a soft, succulent, complex fruit palate with damsons, plums, and sultanas, good tannins and balanced acidity. Ready for drinking now, it will continue to mature for five years, and is best decanted two hours before serving.

Opimian Tawny Port, 10 Years Old This Tawny Port is a blend of Ports from different vintages. Like all Churchill, Graham Ports, the grapes were from their own grade “A” vineyards, all were handpicked and then fermented in traditional ancient granite lagares and pressed by foot.
