About the cover: The small village of Barbischio dates back to 1010 and is located just outside Gaiole in chianti. Because of its position on the border with Siena, Barbischio castle was the scene of many battles. Today, the village has been restored and now houses private residences. This Sangiovese vineyard belongs to the agricoltori del Geografico’s oldest grower Gino chini. at 92 years of age he has lived in Barbischio since birth and still works the land together with his wife Rina.

Italy is one of the largest wine producing countries in the world, alongside France and Spain. It is a land of contrasts where wine is part of daily life; every region has its own grape varieties and wine style to go with the local cuisine. Many of these have been exported around the world, with varieties such as Pinot Grigio becoming big business. But Italy also possesses a multitude of small producers, traditionalists and innovators; new areas continue to be discovered, proving their potential to produce quality wines. In this cellar Offering, there is representation of the two most renowned areas; Piedmont in northwest Italy, and Tuscany in the centre. We also include wines from the beautiful Mediterranean island of Sicily, the alto adige bordering austria at the other end of the country, as well as Emilia-Romagna, Le Marche, the Veneto and Friuli.

Opimian’s Wine consultant Jane Masters MW is a graduate of Bordeaux’s famous Institut d’Oenologie and was elected to the Institute of Masters of Wine in 1997. Fluent in French and English, Jane is currently a member of the council of the Institute of Masters of Wine, regularly speaks at industry seminars and is a Panel chair for the International Wine challenge.

Based in the northern Veneto, Villa di Maser is a historic architectural masterpiece. Designed by andrea Palladio in the 16th century, it is classified as a World heritage site and houses some of the most important works of Venetian Renaissance art. It is also home to Diamante and Vittorio, who own and run the estate and its 33ha of vineyards planted on the gentle slopes surrounding the winery. Low yields, attention to detail and the guiding hand of leading researcher and consultant, Dr. Donato Lanati, all contribute to making quality wines.

Prosecco is grown on the property’s plot, known as the casera de Mezo, which is made up of south facing slopes on clay soils. after hand-picking and gentle pressing, the juice is left to decant naturally prior to the first fermentation. The wine is left on the fine yeast lees for several months to add body, before undergoing the second fermentation that produces the fine mousse. Sip as an alternative to champagne or try adding crushed peaches and purée to make your own Bellini cocktail. [02] M8 D9

The best chardonnay grapes, grown in the Pinera and Valdelroro vineyards, were selected for Il Maserino. after careful hand-picking, the juice was fermented in new French oak barrels, giving it a delicious and toasty characteristic that combines with the ripe limey fruit. The oak is apparent, but does not overly dominate the fruit. The wine is well-balanced with fine texture and a long finish. [00] M7 D9

In the past, much of what was considered to be cabernet Franc in the northeast of Italy has since been found to be carmenère. at Villa di Maser, vines are planted on alluvial gravel soils and yields kept low at seven tons per hectare to concentrate flavours in the grapes. Blended with 15% cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has an intense bouquet with spicy notes, grey pepper, smoke and herbs that follow through onto the palate. M7 D7

chiarli 1860 is the oldest winery in Emilia-Romagna. It was founded in 1860 by the owner of a local Modena “trattoria” as a way to produce wines to serve in his own establishment. The wines were so popular that cleto chiarli soon found himself expanding the business. Over a century later, his family continues to make a range of quality Lambrusco wines.

The Lambrusco Grasparossa di castelvetro vine is distinguished by a unique characteristic. In autumn, not only do the leaves turn red, but so do the stalks and pedicels. The Grasparossa from the castelvetro region produces full-bodied wines and the most tannic Lambrusco.

The chiarli family owns over 130ha of vineyards and is partners with the cantine Sociali di Modena, giving it access to quality grapes. The fruit for this wine was grown on the rolling hills around the village of castelvetro in the southeast of the region, which produces highly tannic Lambrusco. With typical foaming red mousse as one pours it into the glass, this wine is intensely fruity with a bitter cherry freshness on the finish. [04] M8 D9

The Alto Adige

The quietly spoken Werner Walch comes from a dynasty of wine producers. His company, rich in history, dates back to the mid-19th century; his family purchased an old monastery in the heart of Tramin in the Alto Adige region. The oldest cellars are from the 16th century. Hugely atmospheric, they have beautiful vaulted ceilings filled with quietly maturing casks. The original parchments, dated 1598, are on display in the office and detail the tithe payments to the monastery. From here, Werner and his wife Elena make their own wines and run a wine merchant business that sources quality wines from the whole of Italy.

The Walch winery is known for its quality wines and for its artistically carved wooden vats which display vineyard scenes, commemorate family members and celebrate historical events

Pinot Grigio continues to grow in popularity around the world and with Opimians; last year, this was the members’ most popular white wine on the Italian cellar Offering. Sometimes, however, its popularity can lead to disappointment, with producers being tempted to stretch volumes causing high yields that lead to diluted and thin wines. This is definitely not the case with the E. von Keller Pinot Grigio. It has nice white stone fruit aromas with more weight and depth on the palate than the norm; it ends on a mineral note. The alto adige is the most northern region in Italy, lying close to the austrian border. here, where more German is spoken than Italian, there is a most definite alpine feel. Vineyards are planted on the slopes of the adige Valley between 200 to 1000 feet; the surrounding mountains impact on temperature and exposure to the sun. all combine to make certain sites ideal for producing intensely flavoured and structured Sauvignon Blanc. It is believed that the Gewürztraminer grape takes its name from the village of Tramin. considered to be one of the most suited sites for producing high quality wines, Tramin is home to Werner and Elena. Brightly coloured, this wine is rich in aromas with Turkish Delight, spicy cooked caramelized pineapples and tinned lychees. The palate is broad, almost oily, in structure balanced by a long, slightly firm finish. This is a great example of this grape variety. [00] M7 D8

In the 1870s, Wilhelm Walch was the first person to import oak from Slovenia and have casks made by local craftsmen. The historic cellar in Tramin is full of large old oak casks featuring beautifully carved ends, each commemorating and depicting an event in the winery’s history. after fermentation in stainless steel, the wine was aged in one such barrel, creating a Pinot Noir with spicy oak notes that combine with cooked forest fruits, strawberries and raspberries. On the palate, it is elegant with a fine texture typical of good Pinot Noir. M7 D8

Friuli’s reputation has always been based on producing fine white wines when other regions in Italy struggled to do so. While many regions have caught up, Friuli and the alto adige continue to produce some of Italy’s best whites. ca’ Ronesca, based in Lonzano close to the Italian border with Slovenia, has over 50ha of vineyards. The Malvasia Istriana has aromas of pears and white fruit with a touch of honey; the palate is light with a slight spritz that adds freshness.

The cantina Terrenostre at cossano Belbo in the Langhe hills produces small quantities of Barbera d’alba only in the best years. Despite being a tricky year, with variable weather during the growing season, 2010 turned out good quality wines in Piemonte. The wine has spicy black pepper notes combined with kirsch and cherry skins. On the palate, it has medium weight with the firm, acidic characteristics of the Barbera grape variety. M7 D7

The Barbera d’asti wine region was awarded DO c G status in 2008. It is northwest of alba, around the town of asti, on typically hilly terrain. The casata Monticello is showing nicely developed notes of earthy woodlands and spice combined with vanilla to create a fairly complex wine for this price point. M7 D8

Bel colle is a super estate with 10ha of vineyards located in Verduno, in the Barolo region. Nebbiolo grapes were grown on the right bank of the Tanaro River in sandy vineyards called “bricchi”. Winemaker Paolo Torchio has produced a Nebbiolo with an elegant, light style, woodland undergrowth, spicy red fruit and musky notes. The wine was matured in large oak casks and has a soft, fine texture. M7 D8

Roero wines are produced from a blend of 95% Nebbiolo and 5% arneis, the local fragrant white grape. Both varietals are grown in the hills northwest of alba. 2007 was a good vintage in Piemonte and the Bel colle Roero. Still quite restrained on the nose, it has red and black fruits; the palate is firm with good structure and dry tannin on the finish.

Winemaker Paolo Torchio used grapes grown on the calcareous clay soils around the villages of Treiso and Barbaresco, sited on the left bank of the Tanaro River. after fermentation, the wine was aged in oak barrels for two years. already showing brick ruby tints, on the nose it has cherries and earth notes. The tannins are a little firm, but the wine’s solid structure supports them, giving it the potential to age. M6 D6

a new producer for Opimian, Vigneti Luigi Oddero e Figli is a family company based at La Morra that dates back to 1878. This is a fairly serious wine produced from Dolcetto grapes grown on old, south facing vines around Serralunga d’alba in the southeast of the Barolo region. Fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats, the wine is deep plum in colour with restrained spicy fruit on the nose. On the palate, it is concentrated with fine soft tannins. Even though it is not from a well-known DO c, this is a truly classy wine. Not only does it make good wines, but the Scaglione family has an impressive respect for the environment. The Loazzolo vineyards in the asti part of Langhe are surrounded by low, dry, stone walls and natural woods. In 2005, the winery became the first photovoltaic or solar-powered wine cellar to be completely self-sufficient. It was classified by the World Wildlife Fund as an affiliated wildlife reserve in 2008. after fermentation, the wine was aged in French and american oak barrels for a year. a superb example of the amarone style, with a bright ruby colour, it has vanilla and intense red cherries on the nose. It is sometimes said that good Sangiovese can resemble Pinot Noir and if ever there was such an example, it is this wine.
