About the cover: The Pyramid

by Klaus Zylla, a contemporary German painter exhibiting at the O. Fournier winery in Mendoza, truly represents the spirit of the winery; tradition and modernity. This same spirit is also found in the image of the choike, an ostrich indigenous to South America, its image found inside a cave in northern Argentina. The Southern Cross constellation, embedded in the bird, is the inspiration for our Alfa Crux brand; the brightest star for our star wine.

Opimian’s Wine Consultant Jane Masters MW is a graduate of Bordeaux’s famous Institut d’Oenologie and was elected to the Institute of Masters of Wine in 1997.

Fluent in French and English, Jane is currently a member of the Council of the Institute of Masters of Wine, regularly speaks at industry seminars and is a Panel Chair for the International Wine Challenge.

From the popular Rhône varieties to the signature varieties of Chile and Argentina, we have compiled a collection of world-class wines for every budget. Beautifully crafted and concentrated red wines predominate with a sprinkling of elegant whites for good measure. Argentina is home to some of the highest vineyards in the world, up to 3000 metres in the northern province of Salta.

The land is rural, there is a lack of rainfall and extreme climatic conditions keep winemakers on their toes; circumstances that contribute to the quality and uniqueness of the country’s wines. On the other side of the Andes, neighbouring Chile benefits from sunshine and natural conditions that minimize disease of the vine. Phylloxera, the infamous pest that has at one time or another devastated most of the world’s vineyards has yet to have an impact in Chile. As a result, only 2% of vines are planted on rootstock. It is fitting that these two South American countries are featured alongside wines from the Rhône Valley. Although all distinct in their own right, each produce powerful wines and can claim varieties as their own; Syrah and Grenache in the Rhône, Malbec in Argentina and Carmenère in Chile. In the spirit of healthy competition, we have sourced great examples of Syrah and Viognier from Argentina rivalling the best Condrieu and Hermitage!

Bodegas y Viñedos Mauricio Lorca Valle de Uco, Mendoza

Armed with a degree in Oenology and a Masters in viticulture, Mauricio Lorca began his professional life at Bodega Esmeralda in Mendoza and has since worked in a number of top Argentinean wineries. In 2003 he designed and planted his own vineyard in the Valle de Uco, south of Mendoza city. The climate is characterized by hot days and cool nights, with temperatures dropping by 20˚C, and very low rainfall, approximately 250mm per annum.

The rural province of La Rioja in northwest Argentina houses the Valle de Famatina, 600km north of Mendoza.

Annual rainfall here is a mere 120mm, a limiting factor to its agricultural development. Vineyards are the most common and important source of revenue and Torrontés accounts for 40% of plantings. The grapes are grown on pergola-trained vines at 910M; they were hand-harvested at the end of February producing a wine with floral and ginger notes and long, lemon citrus flavours. [01] M8 D9

The heart of Argentina’s wine industry lies in the province of Mendoza. It began in the early 1900s and attracted many European immigrants to the region. The province accounts for over 80% of the country’s wine production. The Valle de Uco, 100km south of Mendoza city, has some of the highest vineyards in the province; Mauricio’s vineyard is planted at 1050M. Here he has produced an elegant and delicate wine with ripe white fruits; peaches, mango and melon with a distinct minerality. [00] M8 D8

Having worked for various prestigious wine producers in Mendoza, Mauricio chose to plant his vineyard in Vista Flores, Valle del Uco in 2003. He designed it to produce concentrated and complex wines; plantation density is high at 6850 plants/ha with vertical training. Yields are very low at between one to two bottles per vine and the rows are all orientated northwest-southeast for longer sun exposure in the morning and protection during the afternoon. M6 D7

Although average rainfall is very low at 250mm per annum, hail can be a big problem in Mendoza province during the growing season; it can wipe out an entire crop. Fortunately, the Valle de Uco has low hail storm incidence. The grapes were hand-picked the third week in March and have been blended with Mauricio’s favourite variety, Syrah, picked a week later. 30% of the blend was aged for six months in a combination of French and American oak, contributing to the intense chocolate, spices and black fruits on the nose.

Rich and concentrated on the palate, it has real depth with firm tannins on the finish. M8 D8

Mauricio’s concept for Opalo is to make as concentrated a wine as possible. Yields are severely restricted with only one bottle produced per plant! All the focus is on fruit and an expression of the unique terroir; there is no use of oak for any of the Opalo wines. Malbec has become Argentina’s signature grape and is the most widely planted red variety.

The fruit was hand-picked into small boxes of 16 to 18kg the first week of April. M7 D7

The cool temperatures of the Valle de Uco can be a challenge for the late ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. 2010 was a vintage of decreased production and delayed maturity, ten to fifteen days later than the norm. The result is a wine with herbal, minty and leafy flavours, rather than black summer fruits. The grapes were picked the first half of April and traditional vinification carried out. M7 D8

Aged in French oak barrels for twelve months, 25% new, 40% second use, 35% third use, this wine has a distinct cedar aroma, marrying perfectly with violets and other floral notes from the varietal. Hand-picked at the end of March, the grapes were fermented on skins for nine days and subsequently underwent natural malolactic fermentation. Its soft and silky structure ends with chewy tannins which will mellow in bottle. M6 D7

Bodegas y Viñedos O. Fournier Argentina

Since their first Argentinean vintage in 2001, O. Fournier has been making a mark on the international wine trade; their wines continue to go from strength to strength. The brains behind the operation, ex-banker turned wine producer extraordinaire José Manuel Ortega, chose to base himself in the Valle de Uco. The last time we saw José Manuel he was in a camper van at Vinexpo offering his own open house; refreshments, including wine and tapas, to those of us who had spent a long day at the fair. He is as generous in his life as he is with his wine.

The winery was built based on eco-friendly and energy saving concepts. The 3600 square meter barrel cellar, which holds more than 2000 barrels, was built 14 meters underground to take advantage of the earth’s natural temperature balance thus avoiding the use of artificial climate control equipment.

Argentina is the only country in the world that produces Torrontés; it does best in the most northern vine-growing area the Valle de Cafayate in the province of Salta. One of the oldest winemaking regions in Argentina, it has some of the highest vineyards in the world at nearly 3000M above sea level. Typical floral qualities from the grape combine with smoky notes. On the palate it is soft and light with lemon-citrus, floral blossom and rose petal flavours culminating in a lingering finish. [00] M8 D9

José Manuel has a firm belief that Tempranillo has truly great potential in the Valle de Uco. Certainly for this wine, the combination of 50% Malbec with 50% Tempranillo produces a wine that is softer and rounder on the palate.

Smoky, creosote characteristics lead to a soft, ripe palate and firm tannins with good balance. Aged in oak for three months, this wine will continue to develop in bottle. M6 D7

The significant difference in temperature between day and night in Vista Flores helps in the full development of the Sauvignon Blanc’s aromatic potential. The grapes were picked and hand-sorted at the winery in mid-February. This is a powerful Malbec named after a star in the Southern Cross constellation. The grapes were picked in April and left on skins for an extended maceration of thirtythree days in total. Ageing in a combination of French and American oak barrels for eighteen months has conferred cedar, balsamic, angostura elements which combine with the more varietal herbal notes. The La Higuera estate lies next to the Loncomilla River. These vineyards, which are dry-farmed, with no irrigation, provide some of the best-quality grapes in Chile.

With its first vintage in 2007, O. Fournier’s venture in Chile is more recent and is still in its early stages. It is gaining critical acclaim daily. The winery is situated in the Valle del Maule, the oldest wine region in Chile, at the southern end of the Central Valley, 300 km south of Santiago. In the Leyda region of the San Antonio Valley, a new facility is being built with a project in the works for a new winery specializing in white wine production.

Due to the high density of plantation, all labour is done manually using horses to plough between the rows; there is no space for a tractor to pass! The success of the cool climate wines of Casablanca has led Chilean winemakers to push the boundaries with vineyards now extending into the rolling coastal hills of the San Antonio Valley. Leyda, at the southern end of this valley, is heavily influenced by its proximity to the ocean.

Sauvignon Blanc grown at 190M in altitude on red clayloams was hand-harvested in March 2011. The climate and altitude combination has produced a wine with green fruits and grassy notes. The wine has fine structure and a long mineral and herbal finish. [00] M8 D8

The very old Cabernet Franc vines in this blend date back to 1890! Un-irrigated, the vines are planted on silty loam and trellised with vertical shoot positioning. Other grape varieties are on alluvial, free-draining, sandy loams at an average of 280M in altitude. The grapes were picked and double sorted by hand at the winery. The wine was aged for twelve months in French oak barrels and was subsequently bottled with no fining or filtration; it may throw a deposit. M6 D7

A special blend made from the grapes of 100 year old Cabernet Sauvignon, 120 year old Cabernet Franc and 80 year old Merlot vines, the Alfa Centauri is bright plum in colour with smoky notes and a rich, concentrated palate.

Having recently had the pleasure of sitting next to Roberto Echeverría, with a twinkle in his eye, he recounted his first time at the UK London Wine Trade fair in the early 1990s. This was a time when exports of Chilean wine were still in their infancy. Roberto, previously an economist with the World Bank, had returned to Chile to run the family business. Having decided that the only way for the family wine business to survive was to produce quality wines and develop export markets, he set out to conquer the world. It appears Roberto created quite a stir in London! Standing on the visitor side of his stand, pretending to be a customer, he asked passersby if they had tasted the Echeverría wines because they really should; they were so good!

Produced from the two classic Champagne grape varieties, there is only a very limited quantity of the 2006 available.

No rainfall in the spring or summer of the vintage allowed for a perfect harvest of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, handpicked on February 16th and 25th respectively. After crushing, the base wine was fermented at low temperature and subsequently blended and bottled for the second fermentation. The wine was kept in contact with the yeast lees for eighteen months yielding a lovely creamy texture with stone fruit and yeasty flavours. [01] M8 D9

The Echeverría family established their vineyards and winery on the outskirts of the town of Molina, in the Curicó Valley, in the early 1900s. The grapes grown on the family estate in this temperate valley were harvested in early March. After pressing, the juice was left to decant for thirty-six hours prior to slow fermentation lasting twenty-five days. Almost colourless, the wine has green herbal fruits and gooseberry rather than tropical aromas. The attractive firm acidity culminates in a fresh lemon-citrus finish. [00] M8 D9

Picked in the second half of March, this un-oaked Chardonnay demonstrates Roberto’s skill as winemaker. It is restrained, all the while displaying ripe peaches and stone fruit aromas. On the attack it is soft and ripe with gala melon and mango flavours leading to a crisp finish. Fermented at low temperature it was subsequently left on its lees for six weeks in tank giving it texture on the palate. He has made a dense wine, currently quite restrained on the nose, but with good weight and body. While tasting the 2010 in London this past September, where it had just been awarded a gold medal by the Sommelier Wine Awards, we were able to catch a sneak preview tasting of the 2011. Winemaker Roberto (junior), present at the tasting, revealed a tank sample hidden under the table. Our next question; could we secure an allocation for Opimian? Coming from the cool Casablanca region, the Sauvignon Blanc grapes were picked a full month later than those in Curicó. Some skin contact, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks and ageing on fine lees, has produced an elegant wine with fresh gooseberry flavours and medium weight. [00] M8 D8

2010 saw a later harvest than normal in Curicó, requiring patience as the fruit took time to ripen. Intense ripe cassis and blackcurrant aromas jump out of the glass! Syrah grapes coming from the Maipo Valley were carefully selected and fermented in open top tanks at 24 to 28˚C. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in 225 litre French oak barrels for twelve months, adding vanilla and spice nuances. Intensely coloured, it is medium-bodied with juicy acidity balanced by ripe tannins.

The clusters were left on the vines late into the season allowing them to ripen, shrivel and develop Botrytis or Noble Rot. Picked in stages on June 17th and 24th and July 7th, the pressed grapes yielded a concentrated, syrupy juice high in sugar and aromatics. With such high sugar levels, yeast struggles, leading to a sluggish fermentation that stops before all the sugar is fermented. The wine, subsequently aged in French oak, has intense notes of dried apricots, almonds and vanilla with the the residual sugar perfectly balanced by the acidity and oak tannins. [08] M6 D7

Villard Estate Casablanca Valley

The harvest for the 2011 Tanagra Syrah took place in May

Thierry Villard established his boutique winery in the Casablanca Valley in 1989. His son, Jean Charles, now makes the wines and is a master of the judicious use of oak to complement and create perfect balance.

New projects included a high density plantation of bush vine Syrah which yielded its first crop in 2010; the fruit went into the Tanagra offered here.

It is amazing that these young vines can produce such concentration!

2009 was a big vintage requiring effort in the vineyards to reduce yields and skill in the winery at harvest due to humid weather conditions. The result is a slightly less complex and concentrated wine than the one offered last year, but by no means lesser in quality. The grapes were harvested by hand and a portion slowly fermented at low temperature in stainless steel while the balance fermented in French oak hogsheads. Casablanca is too cold to fully ripen Cabernet Sauvignon hence the grapes for this wine were sourced from the warmer Maipo region, closer to Santiago. The wine has cassis aromas typical of the variety. The grapes were hand-picked and underwent cold maceration prior to fermentation. 60% of the wine was aged in French oak barrels for twelve months resulting in a wine with a soft, juicy attack. A great follow to the 2009 and perhaps even surpassing it in quality, the grapes were picked on March 29th and April 1st. After fermentation the wine was matured for ten months in French oak barrels. Deep plum in colour, the nose is intensely and most obviously Pinot Noir. Aromas of wild strawberries and vanilla lead to a soft and velvety texture.

Succulent fruit flavours with lively fresh acidity dominate the nose. With good structure and a long finish, this wine is delicious now, but will get better and better as it matures.

This is a big wine! The concentration is amazing given the 2010 is the first vintage coming from a new vineyard. Bush vines were planted specially for Villard at high density, 8200 plants per hectare, on a slope. The Syrah was picked by hand on April 19th and 23rd and after crushing, the grapes were hand fed into barrels and completely vinified in French oak. The wine remained a total of twelve months in the same barrels imparting intense smoky aromas combined with black fruits and chocolate. M5 D6

Jean Charles Villard turns the Tanagra barrels to moisten the cap, a procedure similar to a pump over. As he turns them 180˚, he is listening for the cap to break and reposition itself to the surface. Once the bubbling has ended, he returns the barrels to their original position.

Domaine Villabea has one hectare of terraced vines facing directly south on granite soils. Everything in the vineyard is done manually. After pressing the juice was fermented and aged in barrel. The sandy terroirs of Tavel, on the right bank of the Rhône River, are well-known for producing fine rosé wines. In fact, Tavel is the only appellation devoted solely to the production of rosé. Château de Manissy, property of the Missionary Fathers of the Holy Family, has produced pink wines here since the beginning of the 20th Century and continues to do so under Florian André, winemaker since 2003. This is a small, family-run and organically farmed Domaine.

Everything is done naturally on the estate. There is no use of chemical fertilizers and no products are used during winemaking; natural yeasts develop in the concrete tanks.

30% of the final wine was matured in oak barrels. A slight leathery note on the nose combines with black and red cherries, and soft tannins forming a wine of medium length.

At the end of fermentation, the wine is pumped out of the tank and the skins that form the cap must be removed and taken to the press. The only way to remove the skins in a tank of this type is to climb in and shovel them out. Xavier Fabre of Domaine des Romarins has taken on the task which can be dangerous because of the build-up of CO2, alcohol fumes and high temperatures

Xavier Fabre took over Domaine des Romarins from his parents, Francis and Claire. Located in the Southern Rhône, west of Avignon, the Domaine has 25ha of vines on clay limestone soils and includes some very old Carignan. After a hot and dry summer, the grapes were hand-picked, destemmed and fermented at 26 to 28˚C with daily “pigéage” and pump-overs. The wine was aged in traditional concrete tanks for eight months prior to bottling, thus developing meaty and savoury flavours with rich black fruits. M7 D7

Signargues is the most southerly of the villages permitted to append its name to the AOC Côtes de Rhône Villages status, in recognition of its potential. Soils consist of large round pebbles, known as “galets”, deposited by the Rhône River over a bed of clay. This wine is still restrained, but has hints of cherries with firm tannins from the 15% Mourvèdre in the blend. After relatively long maceration on skins, part of the Syrah was aged in oak barrels. Château de Manissy owns 3.5ha of vines in the neighbouring appellation of Lirac, which sits directly across the river from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault planted south facing on sandy soils with “galets” are both bathed in sunshine and at the mercy of the Mistral wind. Florian’s 2010 Lirac is all fruit; strawberries and crushed loganberries on the nose, with a touch of vanilla. The grapes were hand-picked and left to cold soak prior to fermentation. 20% of the wine was matured in barrel. M6 D7

Located in the small village of Suzette, La Gérine vineyard, at an altitude of 400M, is south facing with views of Mont Ventoux, the Luberon plateau, the Alpilles and the famous Dentelles de Montmirail. La Gérine was the first parcel purchased by third generation Thomas Jullien in 2004 with vines dating back twenty-five to forty years. The wine is made in a former 12th Century chapel where Thomas still uses the traditional technique of treading of the grapes by foot. M8 D8

Luc Tardy and his wife established Domaine du Murinais in 1998; previously his parents were members of the local cooperative. The winery is housed within a 17th Century building made of local “galet” stones. The Syrah vines are between thirty and forty-five years old and are organically farmed. The grapes were hand-picked and macerated for twenty-five days with the resulting wine being matured for twelve months in oak, half in standard 225 litre barrels and half in 600 litre barrels. Roasted coffee, vanilla and spice aromas complement the typical black olive and herbal aromas of the Syrah. M6 D7

Gigondas lies at the foot of the picturesque and aptly named Dentelles de Montmirail. Château de Montmirail has 24ha in the appellation, all planted on clay limestone soils.

Medium intensity in colour, the wine has floral aromas of lavender and wild herbs. After traditional vinification, it was matured fifteen months prior to bottling. The high alcohol content, over 15%, does not show through on the palate; the wine is completely in balance. M6 D7

Domaine des Cigalons, situated towards the north of the appellation, has been in the family for four generations and currently cultivates twenty-two hectares. Côte-Rôtie, just south of the town of Vienne on the right bank of the river, is the oldest appellation in the Rhône Valley. Vines struggle on steep slopes of schist and erosion is a constant problem. Domaine Villabea cultivates a miniscule 0.72ha on steep south facing terraces. As is the tradition, Syrah is co-fermented with 10% Viognier to add softness and floral notes. After fermentation the wine was aged for eighteen months in old oak barrels. Rich and ripe, it is starting to show complexity with savoury and gamey notes, as well as floral aromas. M5 D6
