CELLAR OFFERING 203 The wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence, Cote d’Or of Burgundy and the Loire Valley In this offering from Southern France, Burgundy and the Loire we include wines ranging from simple, quaffable everyday styles providing great value for money to really special wines produced in minute quantities that are perfect for special occasions. All our producers work with the same dedication to quality, striving for improvement each year. Many of the wines selected are from the 2010 vintage, a vintage which the more I have tasted the more I have found to be generally good quality having been sceptical in the beginning. The summer was cooler than previous years with some areas being hit by significant rainstorms and even hail.

The skills of our winemakers have produced wines with perhaps less opulent fruit than 2009, but which are concentrated and well-balanced.

About the cover: Harvest is the most exciting time of the year at Château Canet and following in fine French tradition every member of the family lends a helping hand. As a student at the University of Toronto Victoria dreamt of a life of travel and adventure. She refined her dreams in Burgundy when she met and married Floris and fulfilled them with the purchase of Château Canet in 2007. Now her 9 year old daughter Charlotte helps with the harvest while dreaming of a future as a master winemaker. “What I love most about picking is tasting the grapes and imagining how their flavours will show themselves in this year’s vintage.”

Château Canet is owned and run by Floris and Victoria Lemstra since 2007. Having met in the vineyards of Meursault in Burgundy, they were married and both their children born in the Hospices de Beaune.

Located in the Minervois region at Rustiques, 11km east of Carcassonne, they have 45ha of vines on clay and limestone soils together with 3ha of olive groves, 65ha of farmland and forests and guest cottages where they enjoy sharing their passion for wine.

This wine is packed with plum fruits, blackberries, good mid-palate weight and fresh black fruit flavours. Produced from vineyards located around the medieval city of Carcassonne, on mainly clay/limestone soils, the grapes were de-stemmed and underwent three to four days of cold soak extracting rich black fruit flavours. After fermenting at low temperature it was aged in tank and oak barrels for eight months. M8 D9

4.5ha of Chardonnay are planted at Château Canet. The grapes were harvested in the early morning and skin contact carried out for twenty-four hours in order to maximize the extraction of the fruit flavours. After pressing the juice was left to settle and was racked prior to fermentation at 18ºC, partly in one year old French oak barrels, partly in stainless steel tanks. The result is an elegant wine, lightly oaked with fine nutty and stone fruit characteristics and long lasting tropical flavours. [00] M8 D9

Over half of Château Canet’s 45ha of vines is planted with Syrah. This wine was produced from early harvested grapes from the younger vineyards to ensure juice with lots of fruit and good acidity. Like the Chardonnay, these grapes underwent a short maceration in the press giving the wine its pale, baby pink colour. Fermented at 17ºC in stainless steel, the wine was subsequently matured on fine lees for five months producing a refreshing, juicy style with crisp acidity.

Intensely coloured with mellow ripe fruits, there was no use of oak in this wine to allow the Syrah to fully reveal the quality of its fruit and velvety structure. The final wine is tremendously soft with an approachable style, juicy red cherry flavours, and peppery spiciness that develop with time in the glass. After harvest, the grapes are left to cold soak for four days at 8ºC prior to fermentation at 26ºC. M8 D8

This wine is produced from two of the permitted grape varieties for Minervois Blanc, the Roussanne and the Bourboulenc. Skin contact was carried out for twenty-four hours before gentle pressing of the grapes. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at 18ºC and was followed with a very short time in wood to add texture and structure rather than any obvious oak elements. The nose, currently closed, is of ripe pears. The broad structure of the wine, typical of Roussanne, is complemented with fresh lemon juice zestiness. [00] M8 D8

Earthy plum fruits on the nose are the introduction to this supple wine. After harvest, the grapes were cold-soaked for four days prior to fermentation over a twenty day period.

La Chapelle is named after the 12th century chapel which previously stood on the site of this vineyard. Producing an average yield of 20 hl/ha, the gnarled seventy year old Grenache vines strive to survive; sadly each year fewer of them do. In 2009, rather than uprooting La Chapelle, for the first time, Floris and Victoria decided to segregate these grapes which were usually blended with other Grenache.

Hand-harvested late, on October 2nd, they were left to cold soak for ten days and were kept on skins a further three weeks during fermentation, submerging the cap by foot twice daily. Having tasted it very early in its development, it was quite closed, but it is already showing lovely typical Grenache berry characteristics, great structure and potential. M6 D6

Right: Many men dream of a Porsche or something similar for their 40th birthday. Floris wanted a copy of his first car, a Citroën Dyane, or a glorified 2CV. His children Olivier and Charlotte fulfilled his dream, but regret their present a little when Floris picks them up at school.

LGI WINES Carcassonne Founded in 1999, LGI works closely with some of the big cooperatives around the Minervois and St. Chinian area. The Languedoc, traditionally known for producing big volumes of inexpensive, low quality wine, was a significant contributor to the wine lake. This has changed in recent years and we may be moving into a situation where there is actually a wine shortage. Over the last ten years, more than 100,000ha of vines have been pulled and vineyards totally abandoned. With a succession of years of drought, the 2010 harvest reached its lowest yield with eleven million hectolitres versus twenty million in 2000.

The LGI winemaking team, led by chief winemaker Xavier Roger, works closely with the growers and cooperatives in the area to identify the vineyards with the most potential to produce quality wines.

Clean, fresh apples and melon fruits combine with a soft, light palate. Accessible with refreshing lemon acidity, it represents great value for money. Produced in the Gers region in the south west of France close to Toulouse, the climate is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. After picking and six hours skin contact to build on the fruit aromas, the grapes were gently pressed and fermented at low temperature.

The Lagarde Rouge is produced from traditional Languedoc grape varieties grown between Narbonne and Béziers. Picked at optimum ripeness, de-stemmed and crushed, the Carignan and Grenache grapes underwent short macerations of eight days while the Merlot was on skins for two weeks. The resulting blend is a palatable, soft wine offering lots of red fruits and, as does its white counterpart, great value for money. M8 D8

The Merlot for La Campagne is cultivated 30km from Béziers on beautiful south facing slopes. A more rustic style, it has notes of tobacco and spice with astringent tannins on the finish; it is a wine with character. Traditional vinification was carried out with the grapes fermented in concrete tanks and a maceration of two to three weeks.

Gilles Mondié is a young dynamic producer. He is responsible for the running of the 50ha estate of Domaine Mondié close to the village of Argeliers where he is a member of the cooperative. Planted on south facing clay soils, the vines average twenty years. The grapes were harvested in the cool hours of early morning and after crushing macerated for three weeks during a cool fermentation. A ripe, broad style, this Chardonnay tantalizes the senses with notes of coconut and nutmeg. The fruit, grown on gravel, stony soils west of Béziers was picked during the cool of night. After gentle pressing, 40% of the juice was fermented in French oak at low temperature adding complexity without dominating the fruit. The wine was subsequently aged on its fine lees for three months contributing elegance to the finish. [01] M8 D8

The Syrah is grown on south facing chalky slopes near Argeliers. Traditional vinification was carried out with grapes macerating for approximately three weeks to maximize skin extraction. There is no use of oak. The wine’s concentration is apparent in the deep red colour with purple reflections.

While still quite restrained on the nose, this wine has more facets to it than one would expect from a southern French Sauvignon Blanc. Gooseberries combine with herbs and softness on the attack, not flabby in any way, with good acidity and fruit flavours. It is balanced with a zesty citrus finish. Chief winemaker Xavier Roger has used some of the techniques he learned in New Zealand, combining Sauvignon Blanc picked early in the season with grassy aromas and grapes picked later to give smoothness and riper flavours. Nutty, textured Viognier

The Tortoise Creek Viognier grapes are grown near the small village of Argeliers, 20km north of Narbonne where they enjoy the sunny, warm climate. Harvested too early Viognier can be quite bland, too late and the wines can become heavy and oily in texture. The team at LGI meticulously tracks this variety’s maturity before choosing the right day to harvest. A short skin contact followed by gentle pressing and fermentation at low temperature has produced a wine with a slightly nutty, smoky nose and a textured palate with layers of flavours, good weight and a firm finish. The warm sunshine of the Languedoc-Roussillon and the lack of rainfall during the summer of 2010 led to low yields throughout the area especially for red wines. Parcels of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were selected by Xavier and picked at optimum ripeness. After de-stemming and crushing, the grapes were left to macerate for at least a month and fermentation carried out at 28ºC to produce a concentrated palate. M8 D8

The grapes underwent cold soak for forty-eight hours prior to fermentation to extract soft tannins and lots of colour. 30% of the wine was aged with medium toasted French oak staves giving it its cedar notes and combining perfectly with the dark black fruit flavours of the grapes. New world in style, it has masses of fruit and concentration with nicely integrated oak. M7 D8

Domaine de Fontjun is located near the Mediterranean and picturesque village of Cébazan 5km east of Saint-Chinian after which the appellation was named in 1982. Winemaker Florence Sechet has succeeded in producing a complex and exciting wine with notes of the garrigues so typical of Saint-Chinian combined with leather and spice. The Syrah and Grenache are harvested at polyphenolic ripeness. The greater part of the two varietals is traditionally vinified.

However, a portion of the Syrah undergoes carbonic maceration, a method used on whole, uncrushed grapes. This allows the development of specific aromas which add to the wine’s complexity. M8 D8

Situated 3km east of the historic medieval town of Carcassonne at Conques-sur-Orbiel, Château Salitis has 100ha of vines managed by Frédéric Maurel. Cabardès is the meeting point for influences of the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west allowing for a slow and even maturation of the grapes and resulting in fruity wines in the Languedoc and Bordeaux regions. The Cabardès AOP is the only wine appellation in the Languedoc allowed to blend southern grape varieties such as Syrah and Grenache with Atlantic varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, producing Languedoc wines with distinct characteristics. The 2009 is showing development with incense, liquorice and a certain earthiness. M6 D7

LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON LGI WINES

PAUL SAPIN SA A fortuitous meeting brought about through adversity led to this successful partnership between Thierry Coulon and Olivier Mandeville Peirière. The year was 1994, a year with severe frost damage in the Loire, forcing Thierry to look for alternative sources of Chardonnay. Olivier, having studied winemaking at Montpellier, had taken on the running of the family estate in Minervois from his father and was making good quality, varietal wines. The two were introduced through a wine broker. When in 1996 Thierry bought Paul Sapin, an old established, small négociant business, the partnership with Olivier was developed as the source of quality Languedoc wines. It continues to flourish with the team recently acquiring Château Blomac.

This Grenache is grown in the foothills of the Montagne Noire between Narbonne and Carcassonne, affording it some protection so that it benefits from the sunshine with cooler nights and the influence of the Mediterranean Sea. The intense, fruity bouquet conjures up images of the Mediterranean’s sunny climate. Direct pressing of the Grenache Noir grapes was followed by fermentation at low temperature, with emphasis given to maintaining its fruitiness. [01] M8 D9

The Mandevilles are a family of innovators. Olivier’s father Paul was the first person in Europe to harvest grapes mechanically when he imported a machine from the US in 1971. As a grape variety, Sauvignon is not a natural lover of hot summers making the skill of the vine grower and winemaker more important than ever. After picking and pressing, the juice was left to settle prior to fermentation at low temperature to create soft, fruity flavours. [01] M8 D9

Viognier is not an easy grape to get right, but Olivier has certainly succeeded. One of the first to plant this variety in 1993, the vineyard has now reached maturity. This shows through in the expression of the full character of the grape.

Georges Brunet, credited with the rebuilding of the highly regarded Third Growth Château La Lagune, was the first person to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in Provence here at Château Vignelaure in the 1960s. Now owned by a Swedish-Danish couple, Mette and Bengt Sundström who purchased the estate in 2007, it is managed by winemaker Philippe Bru. Located on a plateau at the foot of the Montagne Victoire northeast of Aix- en Provence, the estate has 57ha planted with vines at between 350 and 480M altitude on limestone clay soils. The wines produced are concentrated with finesse and complexity. Beneath the estate is a spectacular network of cellars where the wines are allowed to mature, first in oak, then in bottle. The magnificent cellars are complemented by a fascinating collection of modern art featuring works by César, Miro and Hartung.

The 2007 Château Vignelaure is showing all the finesse and elegance that epitomize this estate and that have helped build its reputation over the years. After an exceptionally mild winter, budburst was early and was followed by an especially wet spring. The summer was cool and windy with no rain until a few welcomed storms at the end of August which helped to ripen the fruit. Harvest started on September 10th and took place in ideal weather conditions. The grapes were picked by hand with strict selection in the field and again at the crusher. Each variety and parcel was not only vinified separately, but a different vinification program was used for each tank. The Loire Valley, known as the garden of France, extends from east to west twisting and turning for 280km. A land with a huge architectural heritage, it is rich with castles, more than three hundred, ranging from fortifications built in the 10th century to stately homes built for royalty and nobility from the 16th century onwards. Flore and Emmanuel Rialland, situated at Saint-Georgessur-Layon 40km south of Angers and west of Saumur, cultivate a total of 18ha of vines. This medium sweet rosé is produced from the traditional Anjou variety Grolleau grown on sandy soils. After a short maceration period the grapes were pressed and fermentation arrested leaving seventeen grams per litre of residual sugar balanced with the natural acidity. [03] M8 D9

Côteaux du Layon is known for its sweet dessert wines produced from the Chenin Blanc, a varietal that can be extraordinarily long-lived. Situated along the Layon River, a tributary of the Loire River, the noble rot affected grapes were hand-picked in successive stages, a maximum of three. With a honeyed spice nose, it has a light, elegant palate with flavours of poached apples and pears and caramelized fruit. [06] M6 D7

Charles Pain established this domaine in 1987 with 8ha of Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Chenin Blanc. It now comprises over 40ha situated along the banks of the La Vienne River east of the village of Chinon in the communes of Panzoult, Cravant-les-Côteaux, Avon-les-Roches, Theneuil and l’Île Bouchard with an average vine age of forty years. For this wine, Cabernet Franc grapes from gravel terraces underwent long maceration of twenty to twenty-eight days. The resulting wine has developed a ruby red colour and leafy aromas complemented with medium concentration and a firm finish. M6 D7

This domaine is based at Tracy-sur-Loire just 8 to 10km east of the village of Sancerre, on the opposite bank of the Loire River. The vines are between thirty-five and forty years old planted on south west facing slopes with clay limestone soils. After pressing the grapes were fermented at low temperature in stainless steel tanks. Pale yellowgreen in colour, this wine has remarkable fresh limes and green apples on the nose with a soft, broad palate. [00] M6 D7

This property, which previously belonged to the Saint-Satur Abbey in 1450, has been in the Mollet-Maudry family since the 1940s. Florian Mollet took on responsibility for running the 11ha property ten years ago. It is located on south west facing slopes overlooking the Loire River at SaintSatur, Ménétréol and Thauvenay. Hand-harvesting of the fruit from thirty-five year old vines took place in midOctober. Traditional vinification occurred in temperaturecontrolled stainless steel tanks giving way to a fruity, balanced wine. [00] M8 D8
