CELLAR OFFERING 202 The wines of Bordeaux and Bergerac

Bordeaux is by far the largest fine wine producing region in the world, boasting many of the world’s most famous and prestigious estates. This by no means guarantees that all that is produced in the region is good; even top estates have lived through difficult periods with little investment and declining wine quality. As prices for the top wines continue to rise with demand, there is a real job to finding those wines that are high quality while remaining affordable. We have been fortunate in that the last two vintages have been of particularly high quality. Many of the wines on Cellar Offering 202 are from 2009 and 2010 with a selection of older vintages which have been ageing in the optimum conditions of the winery cellars and have developed complex characteristics which are now showing through. This offering is completed with wines from our friends at Château Pique-Sègue in the neighbouring Bergerac region. Located east of Bordeaux, Bergerac wine production ranges from dry reds to sweet whites made in the image of its neighbour, but with often more attractive prices. Located around the town of Bergerac in the Dordogne “département”, the terroir enjoys excellent drainage because of its proximity to the Dordogne River. The wines embrace a tannic structure which can support barrel-ageing and cellaring potential.

About the cover: The Battle of Grunwald which took place on 15th July 1410 was won by the great alliance of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This marked the rise of Poland and led to the period known as the ‘Golden Liberty’ or ‘Golden Age’.

The Jasienczyk Clan to which my family belongs was on the field at Grunwald and was awarded with our Coat of Arms and took the motto ‘Fatum Nostrum Est’ or ‘Our Destiny’. To mark the end of the restoration work here at Château de Sours and the opening of our new Winery, I am proud to have taken this Coat of Arms and I hope that it will herald the start of another ‘Golden Age’ of winemaking here at Château de Sours.

Few people know the smaller estates around the Bordeaux region as intimately as Bill Blatch, even though there are many with family histories in the Bordeaux trade going back centuries. Bill has dedicated the past forty years to Bordeaux wines and remains so driving from Bordeaux to London with samples for this offering to ensure they were in tip top shape for tasting prior to the final selection.

Château de Marsan lies behind the fortress of Lestiac on the right bank of the Garonne River opposite the Graves region. This property, dating back to 1630, has 50ha of vineyards of which 3ha are planted with Sauvignon and Semillon. After picking, the grapes were given a few hours of skin contact prior to pressing. The must was fermented at low temperature in stainless steel tanks except for 10% of the Semillon which was barrel fermented adding an extra dimension and depth to the wine. [00] M8 D8

Château Roquefort, named after the large blocks of chalk and limestone that lie just beneath the soil, was purchased

by Jean Bellanger in 1980. A lover of Sancerre, Jean set about increasing the acreage dedicated to white grape varieties which represent 29ha. The estate is now run by Jean’s son, Frédéric together with winemaker and estate manager Samuel Mestre. Because the eastern side of the plot ripens later that the western, this allows Samuel to mix ultra-ripe grapes with slightly greener bunches, a technique used in New Zealand to add to the spectrum of flavours.

The result shows something of both Sancerre and New Zealand. [00] M8 D8

CHÂTEAU BÉLIAN-GIRAUD, AC BORDEAUX, 2009, SCEA VIGNOBLES LANDIÉ $19.50

The Landié family have been making wine here for many years, selling it in bulk for blending. In the early ninety’s, this was no longer financially viable. The next generation took over the restructuring of the vineyard. Immediately, the Landié’s son set about introducing new practices in the vineyard, reducing foliage, exposing fruit to the sun and allowing grapes to fully ripen. With the introduction of new winemaking techniques, his first vintage, the 2008, quickly attracted attention. Now, the powerful 2009 has resulted in a remarkably concentrated wine with pure cassis flavours, a strong mineral style and soft, ripe tannins making it accessible early. M7 D8

Situated just east of the old citadel town of Pellegure, this property has been in the hands of the Etienne family for centuries. It is only in more recent years that the vineyards have been restructured and winery renovated to allow for the bottling of their own estate wines. 44ha of vineyards are planted half with Merlot and half with Cabernet Sauvignon. After harvest, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks at 28ºC followed by a traditional two week maceration period delivering an interesting, distinctive style with bags of crunchy red cranberry and cherry fruits, and quite a soft structure. Catherine and Jean-Marc Jolivet have built up this property over forty years. Located between Soussac and Pellegrue in the east of the Entre-Deux-Mers, there are 60ha of mainly white grapes planted on limestone-clay soils. Many of the vines are now at an age that produces wines with real class and power. The vineyards are lovingly tended with bud-nipping, foliage control and grass management being completed manually as the family works to reach its goal of biodynamic viticulture. Traditional vinification in concrete vats with fermentation at 28ºC has produced a concentrated wine with ripe tannins and emphasis on the fruit. M7 D7

CHÂTEAU ROSE DU PONT, AC MÉDOC, 2008, SARL LAMBERT LA GRAVETTE $20.83

Located at the very northern end of the Médoc appellation at Gaillan, this small 8ha estate is owned by Pierre Lambert, manager at the négociant house of Philippe de Rothschild.

Here the land is relatively flat with 80% sandy gravel soils and 20% clay limestone. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend shows through in the firm structure typical of the Médoc. After fermentation in concrete vats the wine was aged for twelve months in a combination of one and two year old oak barrels. With a strong cassis flavour coming from the Cabernet Sauvignon, it is starting to show developed coffee and leather notes. M8 D8

Situated south of Targon in the Entre-Deux-Mers region, Cabernet is Château Roustaing's specialty. The vineyards were converted to red grape production in the 1970s following the decline in white wine sales. After harvest, the grapes underwent a rapid heat treatment at high temperature to maximize colour and tannin extraction without removing any bell pepper, herbaceous characteristics that can be associated with Cabernets from this area. This wine has delicious, seductive red berry fruits with a soft, approachable palate. M8 D8

CHÂTEAU ROUDIER, AC MONTAGNE SAINT-ÉMILION, 2006, VIGNOBLES CAPDEMOURLIN $24.33

This is the Montagne Saint-Émilion estate and family seat of Jacques Capdemourlin, proprietor of Balestard La Tonelle and Château Cap de Mourlin across the valley in Saint-Émilion. Managed by Jacques and his son Thierry, Château Roudier is comprised of 30ha situated on a south west facing slope running down from the hilltop village of Montagne to the brook which separates the appellation from that of Saint-Émilion. The wines are made using traditional methods which include harvesting at perfect ripeness, fermentation in cement tanks and twelve month ageing in French oak of which one third is new each year. The only modern technique introduced is the three to four day cold soak which precedes fermentation. M7 D8

What started as a weekend home has become a passion for Patrick and Patricia David. Running a successful business in Bordeaux, they purchased the estate in 1993 to be used as a retreat from the city. Tucked away on the top of a knoll behind the village of Belvès, the 20ha of vineyards run in all directions around the house and cellar. On these clay soils, the Merlot reaches formidable sugar levels. After careful sorting of the grapes and crushing, fermentation was followed by malolactic in barrel. The wine spends at least twelve months in oak that has been carefully selected from various regions in France. With minimal racking while resting on its lees, the result is a wine of great power, evolved fruit and thick tannins. M7 D7

An Opimian favourite, this estate is the personal property of Marie Courselle who runs Château Thieuley with her father Francis and her sister Sylvie. Situated south east of Créon, close to the Garonne River, Clos Sainte-Anne sits south facing atop a steep escarpment with 5ha planted on limestone clay soils, perfect for the Merlot grape that is a full 90% of the production. Two thirds of the wine was matured in oak barrels for twelve months half in new oak and half in one year old with the balance in traditional concrete vats. M6 D7

Over the years in the wine trade, I have come across many unusual stories as to people’s backgrounds and how they ended up making wine. The story of Daniel Alibrand is certainly an interesting one. Finding it difficult to make a living as a fisherman in the Vendée, in 1995 he decided to learn about viticulture and winemaking so took a job in Vouvray where he caught “the bug” for sweet wine production. He signed up for a course in viticulture and oenology in Talence. Here he met his wife-tobe Valérie whose family owned 6ha of Sauternes vineyards in Fargues. After one final attempt at commercial fishing, in 2005 he took on the running of the estate. His wines have been attracting well-deserved attention ever since. [09] M5 D8

CHÂTEAU DE SOURS Martin Krajewski

Featured in this offering is another fine showcase of the wines from Château de Sours, including several from the sensational 2009 vintage. With differing styles and quality levels, each wine is made with the same care and attention. Throughout the 2010 harvest, we received regular updates from Martin about which grapes were being picked when so we felt we were included as part of the winemaking team. All that was promised was found when the new vintage wines were tasted.

Château de Sours dates back to the 14th century when it served as an inn on the “St. Jacques de Compostelle” pilgrimage route to Northern Spain. The Comte de Richemont renovated the property, planted its first vines and built the current house in 1792. Martin and Nicolette Krajewski have been restoring the property to its former glory since 2004.

Produced from 5ha of the Château’s older vines, the grapes were hand-picked in early September. After pressing, 60% of the juice was fermented in second and third year barrels to enhance the structure and layers of flavour without the oak dominating the fresh fruit. This is a powerful yet elegant wine, intense in aroma and complex. Fifty year old Semillon and eighteen year old Sauvignon Blanc grapes were picked on September 24th and 25th and left to macerate for ten hours prior to pressing.

After the onset of fermentation, the must was transferred to French oak barrels 54% new, 46% one year old, and kept on its lees with regular batonnage resulting in a wine with layers of flavour. Pale yellow in colour it has a distinct gooseberry nose with a touch of vanilla. The palate is clean with green figs, lemon notes and cream. It is delectable with a fine texture and long, lime flavour finish. [00] M6 D7

Produced from 5ha of the estate’s younger Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, this wine has appealing red and black fruits on the nose. Ageing in second and third fill oak barrels for twelve months has added a touch of spice. Already drinking well, it will remain at its peak for several years. Merlot grapes grown on the limestone plateau which surrounds the Château are the source of fruit for this wine. Six hectares, ripened under near perfect conditions, were hand-picked at the end of September and early October 2009. After fermentation the wine was aged in French oak 40% new, 60% two and three years old for fifteen months.

The emerging wine is brimming with spice and plums complemented by an elegant structure and firm acidity. It ends dry with black cherry flavours and velvety tannins. M6 D6

This is a fine example of rich Merlot produced from 3.5ha of the best blocks at Château de Sours. The late summer conditions allowed for the grapes to be hand-picked in early October. The grapes were fermented and malolactic carried out in tank followed by ageing in French oak barrels, 66% new and 34% one year old. The fully ripe cooked fruit nose and careful use of oak present a textured wine with a long finish and great ageing potential. M5 D6

CLOS CANTENAC Saint-Émilion, Grand Cru

Clos Cantenac was launched in 2007 as a joint venture between Martin Krajewski and friend and fellow wine enthusiast Marcus Le Grice. The estate is comprised of 3ha of exceptional terroir with deep gravel, sand and clay over limestone.

Great care is taken in the vineyard to maximize this potential and combined with investment in a new winery the wines fully express their quality provenance. Clos Cantenac produces two wines; the Petit Cantenac and the Clos Cantenac.

Born from the fruit harvested during the fabled 2009 vintage, the Petit Cantenac was offered to Opimians as part of the Bordeaux futures offering. Here is the only other opportunity to order the 2009 from this 200 year old property.

CLOS CANTENAC, AC SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU, 2009 $44.67

In 2009, everything came together at Clos Cantenac.

Nature was kind; unlike many in the region it was not hit by the violent hailstorms in May. A new winery was built allowing wines to be made with minimal handling. Use of oak was lessened in order for the fruit to fully express itself. What a success it is! Produced from a single 1.5ha block of fifteen year old Merlot the wine has an intense, vibrant purple colour. The nose is mellow with black fruit, oak, mocha and truffles. The soft attack on the palate leads to a succulent middle with crunchy red fruit, lots of ripe tannin, a powdery, silky texture and a long, black cherries finish. This wine really merits cellaring. SEMAV The Johnston Family

The Johnston family has been based in Bordeaux since the early 18th century and remains one of the traditional négociants on the Cours du Médoc in the centre of Bordeaux. By 1804 their cellars held 25,000 barrels and two million bottles of wine. Today they work with a number of top châteaux from which a special selection has been assembled for Opimian members.

The Lurton family’s relationship with Brane-Cantenac was founded by Henri Lurton’s great grandfather in 1922. He took over the management of the estate in 1992

The ‘Pirate’ returns once again, as a perennial Opimian favourite. A perfect partner to the white, this wine is soft and juicy, and eminently palatable. The high proportion of Merlot adds depth of colour and berry flavours. This is complemented with the Cabernet Sauvignon bringing a hint of bell pepper and cherry flavours. The result is a wine with significantly more character than is to be expected at this welcome price level. M8 D9

This is a classy wine from the Haut-Médoc. Château Tour Salvet is at Cussac-Fort-Médoc 40km north of Bordeaux on the route to Pauillac. Harvest started on September 30th and was followed by traditional fermentation.

Approximately 40% of the wine was aged in oak for twelve months resulting in hugely concentrated flavours of chocolate, cherries and cigar box. The hand-picked grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks and the wines subsequently aged in oak barrels for sixteen months, one third new, one third one year old and one third two years old. Château Hortevie is a tiny 3.5ha property in Saint-Julien owned by Henri Pradère. After a fairly mild winter, flowering occurred under difficult conditions for the early plots resulting in potential unevenness in ripening. To compensate for this and a cooler than average summer, time was spent in the vineyard green-harvesting and leaf-plucking to fully expose the clusters to the warmth and light of the sun.

The result is an elegant wine with stylish use of oak having spent twelve months in barrel. It is refined with smooth textures, but requires time. M5 D6

Manual pruning performed during the winter and the techniques used in spring and summer ensure control over the number of shoots each vine will carry. In addition, steps are taken to secure that there is good distribution between leaves and clusters keeping them aerated and exposed to the sun. The grapes from each block are vinified and barrel aged separately with only the best batches being blended to carry the Boyd-Cantenac label. Ageing takes place for fifteen months in French oak barrels, 80% new. This wine has developed to optimum drinking. M7 D7

As winemakers, Michel and Angelita understand the passion and determination required to produce quality wines. The average age of their vineyards is 35 years with Merlot and Cabernet Franc planted for red wine production and the Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc Muscadelle for the white. Since 2003, they have continued to develop the quality of their own wines, gradually moving towards 100% organic growing. It is hard to believe that this vintage was only Michel and Angelita’s third on the estate! After hand-picking and rigorous sorting, the grapes underwent cold soak for seven days prior to fermentation. The wine was aged for twentyfour months in French oak barrels, 40% new, 30% one year and 30% two years old. The resulting wine is opulent and intense. M7 D8

Catherine and Sandrine Héraud represent the 7th generation at Château Saint-Christoly. Named after the village in which it sits, the estate is in the north of the Médoc appellation 60km from Bordeaux. Here 30ha of vines overlook the Gironde estuary. The grapes were sorted by hand upon arrival at the winery prior to crushing. After fermentation the juice was aged in French oak for twelve months resulting in a wine with a rich body, ripe tannins, red cherry flavours and the potential to age. M6 D6

This is a stunning wine from an often considered lesser appellation. It has an intense spicy oak nose with notes of chocolate, vanilla and coffee bean. This property, owned by Pierre Taïx, consists of a medieval 17th century château along with its sixteen impressive stone fireplaces sitting atop a hill with 8ha of vines. The grapes were hand-harvested, de-stemmed and gently crushed prior to fermentation in tank at 28ºC. It has developed some complexity and is already very appealing.

This wine is immense with lots of potential. Its sheer density can be attributed to the fruit which was harvested from 60 year old vines. Two hectares are planted on a south facing slope with sandy and gravel soil. Generally, 2007 was quite a difficult year in Bordeaux, but was consistent in Pomerol. This wine reflects its quality provenance. Strict grape selection and five to six weeks maceration was followed by twenty-two months in oak barrels, 25% new, 75% two and three years. M6 D6

Château Haut-Bergeron has been in the Lamothe family since the 18th century, making them one of the oldest families in Sauternes. With 29ha of vineyards in the communes of Preignac, Sauternes and Barsac, its shares part of its border with the world famous Château d’Yquem with vines averaged age 50 years. As is the norm in Sauternes, individual grapes affected by noble rot are picked by hand and taken to the selection table where sorting involves four to six passes depending on the vintage. The wines of the Dordogne are often overlooked, considered to be more rustic with less finesse than neighbouring Gironde.

However the region has a rich history of viticulture and a number of vignerons have set out to prove its potential by improving on viticultural practices and vinification techniques. Philip and Marianne Mallard, who purchased the 32ha estate at Ponchapt near Montravel twentyone years ago, continue to push wine quality which is recognized annually through the medals awarded.
