While distinctly European in nature, this offering by no means covers anywhere near all the wine-producing areas of Europe! It does, however, cover a large area running from some of Europe’s most northerly vineyards in Germany to its most southerly on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. Italy is number one in the world in terms of wine production. It has a long history of viticulture and vinification. Indeed the Romans were responsible for exporting and planting many vineyards around Europe. This long, in parts narrow, uniquely boot-shaped country, with its Apennine spine of mountains running almost its entire length possesses every conceivable permutation and combination of altitude, exposition, climate and soil. As if that were not enough, it has a multitude of indigenous grape varieties and wine styles that should keep us busy for a very long time! Germany has been fighting to rebuild its reputation as a quality wineproducing country. Those who have not lost faith consider German wines to be amongst the world’s most elegant. Many of the more distinguished wines are made from the Riesling, a variety which produces aromatic, fruity wines that range from dry, to semi-sweet to sweet with great flavour concentration. Austria, a country with a rich culture and history, ranks number nineteen in terms of world production, after Russia, the Ukraine, Brazil and Greece, a statistic which belies some of the world class wines it produces. In this vast area, as always, the importance of location, climate, terroir, grape variety and, of course, the people are what make for interesting, quality wines.

About the Cover: These unique wood barrels are located in the Walch historical cellars in Termeno, Alto Adige. The ancient building, formally a monastery, was purchased by Wilhelm Walch in 1869. Four generations later, the Walch family continues their production of quality wines in the region. Throughout the decades, the over 100 year old Slovenian oak casks have been carved and decorated with images that commemorate important events, family trees and include poems and vineyard scenes. Despite the passage of time, these barrels are still used to store the winery’s best reds. Because of their age, there is no longer any oak influence however they provide the perfect breathing space for the wines to age gracefully.

With quantities down 42%, 2010 was a challenging year for Christof Höpler HÖPLER WINERY quality who runs the 43ha estate. Thanks to his attention to detail in the vineyard the of the wines produced is good although Christof modestly puts this down to their fortunate position in the Leitha Hills. The winery is based at Breitenbrunn, Breitenbrunn in Burgenland on the west bank of the shallow Lake Neusiedl 65km south east of the cultural city of Vienna. This giant pool, 20km long and Burgenland only 1m deep, surrounded by marshy reeds, is hugely important in producing

quality grapes that will retain fresh, crisp flavours. After all, this is Austria’s hottest region with a continental climate open to influence from the Pannonian Plain in neighbouring Hungary.

Austria’s indigenous grape variety, the Grüner Veltliner, is grown on more than a third of the country’s vineyards and has become “très à la mode” in restaurants the world over.

The grapes were hand-harvested between 28th September and 13th October. After pressing, the juice was fermented in the ultra modern winery in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to produce this fresh, delicate style with white blossoms and delicious, crisp acidity. [00] M8 D8

Höpler’s vineyards are split into a number of discrete parcels along the banks of the lake. A portion of the Pinot Blanc is cultivated in the Scanz vineyards close to the winery itself. Vines are south facing on clay, silt soils with gravel. The grapes were picked between the 23rd and 30th of September, and fermented in stainless steel allowing the clean development of peach blossom, honeydew melon and almond aromas with long, balanced acidity. The 2010 vintage was a difficult one, with a cold and wet spring leading to late flowering. Christof and his team worked harder than ever in the vineyards. Picked on October 7th, the grapes fermented at low temperature have produced a dry wine with great balance and finesse.

Green apple notes combine with a mineral steeliness. With a slight spritz on the palate, this wine has real depth. [01] M7 D8

Höpler owns 9ha of Pinot Noir between twelve and twentyfive years old planted with various clones from France and Germany. Typical Pinot Noir aromas not often found outside of Burgundy dominate the nose with hints of wild strawberries. On the palate it is elegant, lively and juicy with cranberries on the finish. The wine was aged for ten months in two to three year old barrels allowing it to mellow and mature without oak flavour dominating the delicious fruit.

It is the mist created by Lake Neusiedl during the autumn that creates perfect conditions for the development of noble rot and the ensuing concentration and flavour development in the grapes; in 2008 there was plenty of fog! This wine has won awards at a number of competitions including gold at Mundus Vini in Germany. Rich and luscious, it has pure apricot and honey flavours with a tremendously long finish. It is also home to the Geisenheim Institute, the world renowned teaching and research centre for Oenology. The Hirt-Gebhardt estate, with 22ha in Eltville, Martinsthal and Rauenthal, is run by a father and his son who, not surprisingly, trained at Geisenheim. From the heart of the Mosel Riesling

Karl Erbes established this small 5ha estate in 1967 and it is now run by his son Stefan. Set in the heart of the Mosel Valley, Riesling vines up to eighty years old are cultivated on the prestigious Ürziger Würzgarten, meaning spice garden. Its steep, 70% gradient, south facing slopes leave no option but to do everything by hand on the characteristic red slate soils. Spice aromas, green apples and citrus are followed by vibrant minerality and ripe peach flavours on the palate. [06] M7 D8

The Veneto AZIENDA AGRICOLA VILLA DI MASER Maser, Treviso Palladio envisioned the Nymphaeum, which is located at the back of the villa, and Alessandro Vittoria designed the ornamentation and produced many of the stuccoes. Natural spring water from the hills flows to the fountains and contributes to the irrigation of the fields.

By all accounts Countess Diamante Luling Buschetti and her husband Vittorio Dalle Ore lead a fairy tale existence.

They live in an exquisite villa set in a 230ha estate, of which 30ha are vineyards, surrounded by dogs, horses and all sorts of other animals. Diamante was born here and she has known Vittorio virtually all her life; her father was best man at his parent’s wedding. Their home, Villa Barbaro, is one of the finest examples of Palladian architecture. His concept for agricultural villas, designed for the Venetian aristocracy, consolidated farm buildings into a single structure with strong Greek and Roman influences. Built around 1550, it was decorated with frescoes by Paolo Veronese with statues and stucco fronting modelled by Alessandro Vittoria.

Produced in the same way as the Brut, the grapes come from the same two plots and are hand-picked into small crates. The two parcels, Casera de Mezo and Ote, have different soil types and exposure with Casera de Mezo a south facing hill with poor clay soils and the Ote, flatter and south east facing. The extra few grams of sweetness added at bottling provide a wine that is not obviously sweet, but that is a little rounder and mellow. [03] M8 D9

This region, north of Treviso, has recently been granted Asolo Prosecco DOCG Superiore status, the highest level in the quality scale of the Italian DOC system. At Villa di Maser, Prosecco grapes sourced from two plots are grown on gentle slopes between 120 and 210m. The winery, originally part of the villa, is now housed in a separate building where grapes are gently pressed and the juice left to settle.

Both the first and second fermentations are in tank at low temperature producing a light, fresh, fruity sparkling wine with fine mousse. [02] M8 D9

Diamante and Vittorio work with consultant winemaker and researcher Donato Lanati to improve the quality of their wines each year. Chardonnay is planted at higher density using the Guyot vine training system on alluvial, gravel soils.

The grapes were hand-picked into small cases. After pressing and fermenting at low temperature, the wine was aged on its fine lees in stainless steel for a further six months to add weight and complexity to the delightful tropical fruit flavours. [00] M8 D8

Maser sits on the right bank of the Piave River which divides the area north of Treviso into two hilly zones with diverse geological soil types. While Prosecco is the region’s main product, more Cabernet is being planted and it is developing quite a reputation for these varieties. The Villa di Maser wine is produced from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Each variety was harvested and vinified separately with maceration including the skins for ten to twelve days and frequent pumping over. The finishing touch is the ageing in large oak casks for twelve months. M7 D8

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, there is a slight earthiness on the nose and restrained fruit. On the palate it has a soft attack, with medium body and soft tannins.

Despite eighteen months in oak casks there is no obvious oak. With mellow flavours, it will continue to develop and open up. M7 D8

The three Bordeaux grape varieties, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, are blended in proportions similar to many right bank Bordeaux wines and result in a similar style; no one variety or flavour dominates. This wine is somewhat ethereal and is a challenge to describe.

Emilia-Romagna CORTE D’AIBO Monteveglio, Bologna The Corte d’Aibo estate sits in the hills 20km west of Bologna with sixteen hectares of vineyards cultivated using organic viticulture; the winery has been certified by the AIAB (Associazione Italiana per l’Agricoltura Biologica) since 1991. This is the first offering of their wines which have been presented to Opimian by our friend Roberta Lupi who also represents Agricole Rizzello. They are impressive.

The main house of the Corte d’Aibo dates back to the 16th century and was originally a fortified tower before its transformation to a convent. Today, it is owned by a dedicated group of winemakers who have taken on the restoration of the winery and its vineyards.

Picked by hand, after pressing of the Chardonnay grapes and clarification of the juice, it was fermented at low temperature. With delicious limey fruits on the nose, this wine is extremely approachable and supple on the palate with an appealing crisp finish. It is one of the best organic whites I have tasted this year. Corte d’Aibo obtained full organic certification in 1991 and has a modern winery fully equipped with small stainless steel tanks to allow the careful selection and separation of each parcel. The Sauvignon grapes were hand-harvested the first week in September and fermented at low temperature with no use of oak. The wine is slightly closed on the nose, but has a broad, rich structure. Great complexity – animal, gamey notes with hints of leather, this is a dense, tightly packed wine with lots of tannins and finesse. The grapes were hand-picked at the end of October. After maceration for eight to nine days, the wine was aged in oak barrels for a year prior to bottling.

Puglia

An Opimian favourite, the Rizzello family continues to produce a range of wines offering a selection based on the indigenous varieties upon which Puglia has established its reputation. Previously an area that produced mainly bulk wine used to fatten up wines from other, cooler parts of Italy, the region has undergone somewhat of a transformation, particularly on the Salento peninsula.

Puglia’s climate is hot and dry and the best wines are made in the flat land that makes up Salento. Here relief is provided by the cool winds that blow in off the Ionian and Adriatic Seas. Negroamaro is the grape that typifies eastern Salento and as the name suggests this thick-skinned variety can produce intensely coloured wines with bitterness if over-extracted. This is why relatively short fermentation on skins for eight days is carried out. M8 D8

Puglia’s most famous black grape, the Primitivo, alias Zinfandel in California, is grown on chalky soils around Cellino San Marco near Brindisi. The 2009 vintage was even hotter than the norm, resulting in low yields and early picking, for both the Negroamaro and in particular for the Primitivo. After hand-harvesting in August, the grapes were fermented on the skins for fourteen days producing lots of blueberry and floral aromas. M7 D8

Of the 180ha vineyards owned by the Rizzello family around the small rural village of Cellino San Marco, over 80% are planted with native varieties. For this wine, Nergroamaro and Malvasia Nero were harvested from the Tenuta Marotta in September. Oenologist Marco Franchi fermented the wine for eight days on the skins. For two centuries the Bosticardo family has lived and tended to this 6ha estate in the tiny hamlet of Rodotiglia near Calosso. Valter Bosticardo has been taking care of the vineyards since 1985 and is now ably assisted by the younger generation. Here Barbera is planted alongside Moscato, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Gamba di Pernice. Barbera grapes coming from vines between thirty and eighty years old around Calosso, on clay limey soils, were fermented in stainless steel tanks for eight days.

While 2006 was a challenging vintage, many of the resulting wines from careful growers, and in particular Barbera, are delicious with potential for further ageing. M6 D6

The grapes grown around the villages of Soave, Monteforte d’Alpone, Lavagno, Colognola ai Colli, Illasi and Roncà were gently pressed, cooled and the must fermented in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures. The vineyard area of Valpolicella lies north of Verona stretching west to Bardolino and eastwards as far as Soave. Over the years it has been extended and much of what is produced can be insipid and thin. This is certainly not the case here! The grapes were sourced from villages in the south eastern area of the appellation including Illasi, Mezzane, San Martino Buon Albergo, Cazzano di Tramigna and Colognola ai Colli. The skins were left in contact for twelve days and the juice fermented at 25°C to produce a light, easy-drinking wine with expressive cherry flavours. M8 D8

The Ca’ La Bionda estate sits in the north of the Valpolicella Classico region at Marano di Valpolicella with 29ha of vineyards ranging between 150 and 300m in altitude. Established in 1902, it is currently run by the fourth generation of the Castellani family who have renovated the winery and organized it so that everything is gravity fed, therefore eliminating the use of pumps. Here a great example of the most potent and most noble wine of the region is produced. Select bunches were hand-picked and dried on cane racks, known as “appassimento”, until the end of January/early February, losing 40% of their weight and developing complex flavours. After a series of owners and further division, the Le Preselle farm today is composed of nearly 15ha of Morellino, the local name of the Sangiovese, with a plan to double the vineyard over the next few years. The pretty hilltop town of Montepulciano, not to be confused with the grape variety, lies 50km south east of Siena and is surrounded by vineyards planted with its own Sangiovese clones, known here as Prugnolo Gentile, and other varieties. The “denominazione di origine” requires a minimum of 70% Sangiovese. Cerraia is a limited production from 6ha of vines, cordon-trained with a density of 4000 vines/ha at an altitude of 200m. The grapes were harvested in October. After fermentation the wine was aged for twenty-four months in large oak barrels and it is quite present with intense vanilla, red cherries and raspberries on the nose. M6 D6

The Super-Tuscan category launched in 1975 by Antinori with Tignanello was the first time international Cabernet Sauvignon was blended with the Sangiovese. At that time little clonal selection work had been done on Sangiovese and the focus for many producers had been on high yields producing thin, insipid wines. This version is produced by Carpineto in Greve in Chianti from 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety was vinified separately and subsequently blended prior to maturing in small oak casks for six months. M6 D7

The estate of Col d’Orcia sits close to the southern boundary of the DO benefiting from the protection against summer storms afforded by the 1,750m Mount Amiata. The estate itself covers 540ha of hilly terrain at an average altitude of 450m and is only 35km from the Mediterranean coast. For years the estate has worked with researchers at the Universities of Florence and Milan to improve vine material and produce top quality grapes. 2009 was characterized by a rainy spring followed by a dry, hot summer allowing for long, optimal ripening of the Sangiovese. After fermentation for ten to twelve days at 28°C, the wine was subsequently aged in 25 and 75hl Slovenian oak vats and small French casks. M6 D7

This area produces some of the most concentrated Sangiovese with true ageing potential. It benefits from the combination of the warm, dry climate of the Tuscan coast with less fertile soils than Chianti Classico. 2006 saw a mild, but rainy winter and spring which provided plenty of water reserves during the hot summer months that ensued. The grapes were hand-picked with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and upon arrival at the winery. Relatively long fermentation lasting approximately twenty days was followed by three years ageing in large “botti” made from Slovenian and Allier oak prior to bottling. With great concentration, this is a truly elegant wine with the potential to evolve into something quite exceptional. M5 D6

Founded in 2000 by Francesco Bolla, this relatively new 27ha estate located in Maremma is only 15km away from the Mediterranean Sea. It is named in recognition of the three grape varieties Alicante, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown on calcareous clay rocky soil facing south west at between 170 and 300m altitude. Following handpicking the grapes were fermented in small, open-topped stainless steel vats with gentle punching down of the cap.

Part of the wine was aged in oak producing a mellow bouquet with black cherries and blueberries. M6 D7

Verdicchio has been cultivated in Le Marche since the 14th century. Its name is derived from “verde”, meaning green, and refers to the variety’s skin and the greenish hue which it displays in the glass.

This is the best known of the DOC’s making wine from the Verdicchio variety. Based in the heart of the DO at San Paolo di Jesi, Piersanti specializes in the production of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. The fruit, sourced from the surrounding vineyards, was vinified in the modern winery.

Gentle pressing was followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks to produce a light, fresh, fruity wine. [01] M8 D9

With lots of Italian personality, this is a more than perfect everyday red. The reds of Le Marche, such as DO Rosso Piceno established in 1968, are not especially well-known, but often represent good value for money. The grapes used are limited to the area in the province of Ascoli Piceno where they are recognized for their higher quality. Based on a blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano this concentrated red wine has a robust character while at the same time being approachable. M8 D8

Fratelli Corsi was established in 1917 by Francesco Corsi.

Based in Certaldo in the Chianti region 50km south of Florence, the company offers a range of wines from a variety of regions. The Umbrian city of Orvieto, situated on the flat summit of a volcanic tuff, was an important Etruscan centre and beneath it is a labyrinth of caves and tunnels.

The blend is based mainly on Tuscan Trebbiano, known here as Procanico. The addition of varieties such as Grechetto brings fruitiness and weight to the blend. [00] M8 D9
