The wines of Spain, Portugal, the Maconnais and Alsace This Cellar Offering is based on some of the more traditional European wineproducing areas with a particular focus on Iberia. In recent years many of the old vineyards that were virtually abandoned have been rediscovered. Regions that were considered too hot to be of interest have been tamed using modern technology which allows grapes to be picked more quickly and at the optimum moment. From France, a range of wines from Alsace includes different terroirs and quality levels of Riesling and Gewurztraminer that make for interesting comparisons and finally some old favourites from Burgundy.

About the Cover: Bodegas Sonsierra was founded in 1961 in San Vicente, an area which is historically dedicated to wine and where some of the best Rioja vineyards are located. The wines combine the traditional essence of Rioja with an ultra-modern vision of winemaking. As a result, great success has been achieved at the international level, their Crianza Vendimia Seleccionada taking gold at the Challenge International du Vin (France) and Mundus Vini (Germany) in 2010.

While it has a long history of producing wine, Spain is now the most innovative of the traditional European wine-producing countries. It was a pleasure to recently spend some time in Spain and to meet Maribel Gómez and the rest of the team at Vinoselección. We held an extensive tasting of interesting Spanish wines. This selection is a result of picking out the best of those tasted and includes wines 40 year old Monastrell vines at Altos del Cuadrado representing estates from various areas across the country.

The Ramón Castaño family has made the production of high quality Monastrell its mission. The mature vineyards are found at the most southern end of the Sierra Salinas in Alicante. As a variety, Monastrell is able to withstand extreme temperature conditions between summer and winter, as well as prolonged drought periods; here the average rainfall is 150mm per year. The grapes are made into wine at the super-modern winery built in 2000. M8 D8

Torremilanos is one of the oldest and largest estates in Ribera del Duero, close to Aranda. Established in 1903, it was acquired in 1975 by the Peñalba López family who increased plantings of Tempranillo so that the winery now sits in the middle of over 200ha of surrounding vineyards.

The cooler 2010 summer produced grapes ideal for this Monte Castrillo Rosado; light and fruity with red fruits and a refreshing palate. [00] M9 D9

This is another Monastrell-based blend produced by the Castaño family, this time from their winery in the Jumilla region. In this area, previously considered only fit to produce high alcohol, bulk wines, the family has 45ha of vines at 750 to 800M. Traditional Monastrell has been blended with Bordeaux varieties Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French and American oak barrels for four months to give an easy style with blueberry fruits and generous aromas. Finca Antigua, an impressive, avant-garde, state-of-the-art winery, was built in 2002 by the Martínez Bujanda family from Rioja and sits within the 1000ha estate. 421ha are planted with Tempranillo and international varieties at high altitudes. This cuvée was produced specially for Opimian and spent six months in American oak barrels to give a touch of coconut which enhances the red fruit typical of the Tempranillo. M7 D7

Bodegas Sonsierra, situated in the Rioja Alavesa, has over 600ha of its own vineyards, all within easy reach of the bodega. Produced from 100% Tempranillo, after a long, slow fermentation and maceration on the skins, the wine was aged for 12 to 13 months in new American oak barrels. M7 D7

The Los Aljibes vineyard is part of a much larger estate, 900ha in total, that includes olive groves, a stud farm, natural scrubland and lots of wildlife. 178ha of vineyards at an altitude just under 1000M surround the Castilian-style winery. At this altitude there are extremes in terms of temperatures. The grapes were picked by machine during the cool of night. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged in oak vats for six months. It is a great value-for-money wine ready to drink now. M7 D8

A well-known name in Rioja, Bodegas Faustino is located right in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa sub-region in Oyón. It owns 650ha of vineyards and produces a wide range of Rioja styles. After careful selection in the vineyard, the grapes were fermented and aged in American oak for eight months and then transferred to French oak casks for a further six months to produce a wine full of soft, red fruits, quite light in structure and elegant in style. The Tempranillo grapes from this estate are grown on sand and chalk soils. Rain during the 2008 harvest meant further sorting, making it even more important than normal.

The grapes were left to macerate on the skins for 18 days during and post fermentation after which time the wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels resulting in an elegant, creamy texture and complex bouquet. M6 D7

Somontano in north east Spain, close to the French border, has quite a varied terrain with river valleys, the foothills of the Pyrénées and terraced mountainsides. Bodegas Sierra de Guara was established by Michel Mort in 1997. Close to Barbastro, it is named after the Guara peak. Here there are 65ha including 12ha of Cabernet Sauvignon and 28ha of Merlot in cool climate conditions. 2005 was a relatively warm year producing ripe fruit and tannins. The wine was aged in new French oak barrels for 16 months adding intense coffee and toasted notes which combine harmoniously with the red and blackberry flavours. M7 D7

Gentle pressing of the skins and subsequent malolactic fermentation and ageing in new French oak barrels for 18 months has produced a wine with herbal notes, typical of the Bordeaux varietals, real expression, depth and the potential to age. Bodegas Acústic was founded in 2004. It is the personal project of Albert Jané of Jané Ventura in the Penedès and Oenologist Núria Ruiz. The objective was to re-discover the ancient vineyards, native varieties and traditions of Montsant and to maximize their expression in the wines produced. The Montsant DO sits around the Priorato DO and until 2001 was merely a sub-region of DO Tarragona, although it had long been recognized as producing quality wines. This extraordinary red is made from the fruit of knotted 55 to 80 year old bush vines which provides intensity, concentration and spiciness. Only 2,800 bottles were produced and although expensive, it is worth every penny! M5 D5

BODEGAS CONCAVINS Montblanc, Barberà de la Conca, Catalonia

Concavins, a former cooperative purchased in 1988 by the Carbonell Figueras family, is the leading bodega in Conca de Barberà in the north east of Spain.

Winemaker Josep Vadri is producing great wines from a combination of indigenous grapes and more recently planted international varieties.

This area formerly produced some of the best quality grapes for Cava, but its capability for quality still wines was first demonstrated

by Torres. The region’s potential is due to a combination of its geography, a crater-shaped valley that is protected by mountains, its altitude, an average of 400M, and the free-draining, chalky, alluvial soils. Concavins has 50ha of its own vineyards and continues to buy grapes locally from former members of the coop.

The Spanish love to party; no doubt this encouraged the development of the Cava industry close to the city of Barcelona. Castillo D Montblanc Brut is produced from the three traditional Cava varieties – Macabeu as the base, Xarello which gives the typical earthiness associated with Cava and the fine Parellada particularly suited to the higher altitudes of Conca de Barberà. Each variety was hand-picked and vinified according to the traditional method similar to champagne. This cuvée was aged on lees in bottle for approximately two years, compared to the standard nine months, to give extra complexity and fine mousse. [02] M8 D9

Tempranillo is the main varietal associated with Spain. Also known as Ull de Llebre (hare’s eye) in Catalonia, here it has been blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety was harvested and fermented separately in stainless steel tanks followed by malolactic and short ageing in American oak barrels. The finished wine has typical Tempranillo red berries, red cherries, an intense colour and balanced structure. M8 D8

Viura, also known as Macabeu, is a late-budding variety which has traditionally been grown in this area to produce base wines for Cava and is also the variety used to produce many white Rioja wines. A blend of the traditional Tempranillo offers red fruits and cherries on the nose with international varietals Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot providing structure and weight.

Grown on chalky clay soils, the grapes were fermented in barrel and the wine subsequently aged in American, French and Hungarian oak barrels for 14 months. This wine is big with an intense plum colour, ripe plum jam and black cherry notes and firm tannins. M6 D6

The Chardonnay grapes were grown in several different plots around the Conca de Barberà area, each harvested at its optimum ripeness. After a short period of skin contact to maximize fruit aromas, the grapes were pressed and the juice fermented in a combination of barrels from the Alliers, Nevers and Tronçais forests in France, and tank, giving an added layer of complexity and creamy texture. The hot, dry climate of the Douro was, until recently, considered too hot to produce quality white wines; however under the right combination of altitude and exposure some fine examples are now emerging. This wine is made from the indigenous Rabigato grown on schist terraces which give very low yields. After limited skin contact, the juice was fermented at low temperatures and the wine aged in French oak for nine months with regular battonage.

A great affordable alternative to vintage port, 2003 is remembered throughout the whole of the viticultural world in Europe as the hot vintage. The Douro Valley is hot at the best of times, but the 16 consecutive days of temperatures above 40º C in July and August were exceptional.

Temperatures were back to normal for harvest and the year was declared a Vintage Year. After vinification the young port wines were aged in large oak vats for four years. Winemaker Nicolas Garde selected quality Gewurztraminer grapes for this cuvée from specific parcels to fully express the varietal and produce a wine with more complex aromas with a slight earthiness and spices. After hand-picking, a second rigorous selection of the grapes was done at the winery prior to pressing in the pneumatic press. While Pinot Gris is widely planted around the viticultural world, it is really in Alsace where it comes into its own, producing weighty wines that excellently partner food. It is difficult to believe that it has anything at all in common with Italian Pinot Grigio. The grapes for the Cuvée Prestige come from around Hunawihr and were harvested by hand.

Further quality selection was done at the winery prior to fermentation at low temperatures in stainless steel allowing the variety’s full fruit expression. [02] M7 D7

There is nowhere in the world that produces Gewurztraminer with the power and exuberance of that produced in Alsace. For the Cuvée Prestige the grapes are hand-picked into small boxes, carefully selected upon receipt at the winery and then pressed in a pneumatic press with no de-stemming or crushing. The clear juice is fermented at low temperatures and subsequently aged on lees for four to six months with lees stirring to produce this nectar-like wine. [03] M6 D7

Riesling is considered by many to be the most noble of noble white grape varieties. While not classified as Grand Cru, the Lieu-Dit Silberberg, meaning Silver Mountain, has the potential to produce high quality grapes. Located approximately 10km from Hunawihr, it dominates the village of Rorschwihr. The deep, chalky soils retain moisture and help to resist drought. This terroir is particularly suited to Riesling conveying lemon citrus flavours and good acidity. It is truly Alsace in style and so different to German Rieslings. [01] M6 D7

This is a fine example of Riesling, cultivated on Grand Cru terroir in a good vintage for the varietal. The Grand Cru vineyards of Osterberg lie 2km north east of Hunawihr looking down over the pretty village of Ribeauville. Set on medium to steep slopes at an altitude of 250 to 350M on stony clay soils over marl, the grapes develop typical varietal kerosene and mineral notes with great depth. [01] M6 D6

2008 was a successful vintage for Pinot Gris. The Grand Cru Froehn is about 2km from Hunawihr on a knoll, beneath the village of Zellenberg, on calcareous sandstone south, south east facing slopes between 270 and 300M . Here the grape variety takes on richer, concentrated, more complex aromas including toasted hazelnuts, dried apples, pears and honey. This wine has great potential for ageing. [05] M5 D6

A good year in Alsace, after a very mild winter, spring was hot with temperatures in May exceeding 30º C and flowering occurring a month earlier than usual around May 25th.

Summer was cooler, allowing the vines a long ripening period which concentrated flavours. Conditions during September and October were perfect for harvest with six weeks in a row of unbroken sunshine, warm days and cool nights. Brightly coloured with intense honeyed apricots on the nose and nutty, dried fruits on the palate, this is dense and rich. For Vendanges Tardives, the grapes are left to ripen on the vine and noble rot, Botrytis Cinerea, develops with picking not occurring until late in the season. 2007 was a perfect year for botrytis with the long Indian summer producing outstanding wine. This selection was recognized as one of the finest from that vintage, winning gold in the Concours des Riesling du Monde in March this year. [06] M6 D8
