OCTOBER 5 & 7, 2023
TOBIN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
Dear Patrons, Supporters, and Opera Lovers,
Thank you for joining us tonight as we kick off OPERA San Antonio’s 9th season with Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. This production marks a few “firsts” for OPERA San Antonio that I would like to share with you.
OPERA San Antonio has joined forces with New Orleans Opera to co-produce this presentation of Hansel and Gretel. This is our first collaboration with another company to design the sets and costumes for the show you will see tonight. Collaborations like this are one way we continue to operate in a financially responsible and sustainable manner.
This is also the first time OPERA San Antonio has staged an English language opera on the stage of the H-E-B Performance Hall. We continue to strive to provide beautiful works of art that are accessible to our audience, both young and old. Along with our production of The Pirates of Penzance in the spring, we hope to attract wide audiences to these familiar and family-friendly tales while maintaining our standard for world-class opera performances.
Most notably, this is the first time all five Tobin Center Resident Companies have collaborated for a performance. Along with OPERA San Antonio, the Classical Music Institute, Ballet San Antonio, Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, and the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio have all joined forces to bring this opera to life on the stage of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Partnerships like this mean your support of the arts in San Antonio goes even further, allowing the Resident Companies to share resources and maximize every contribution to bring you these wonderful art forms.
Responsible. Sustainable. Accessible. These are the values that guided OPERA San Antonio through the pandemic, from staging virtual performances to becoming the first major arts organization in Texas to return to live productions. As we look to the future of the arts in our community, these values will continue to guide our work. Upon founding OPERA San Antonio over a decade ago, Mel Weingart and Blair Labatt made a commitment to this community of supporters that we would operate with fiscal responsibility. Nine seasons later I am proud to say that our budget remains balanced as we expand our efforts to reach more members of our city.
Your support, whether through membership, donations or attendance tonight, ensures that we can continue to deliver on our mission to provide world-class opera to our community. Thank you for your patronage.
Sincerely,
Matthew C. West Chairman, OPERA San Antonio

ACTI
The home of Hansel and Gretel: The children watch TV and goof around to avoid doing their chores. Hansel complains he is hungry. Gretel shows him some milk that a neighbor shared for the family’s supper. The children dance with joy. Their mother returns and wants to know why they haven’t been working. She accidentally spills the milk and chases the children out of the house and into the woods to pick strawberries.
Their father, a broom-maker, returns home drunk after a great day of sales. He surprises his wife with the food he has bought and then asks where the children have gone. His wife tells him that she has sent them into the woods. Instantly fearful, he tells his wife about the Witch who lives deep in the forest, and that the children are in danger. They go out into the woods to rescue the children.
ACTII
The woods: Hansel and Gretel explore the woods and eventually begin to pick flowers and strawberries. The children hear a cuckoo singing as they happily eat and play. In the sudden silence of the wood, Hansel admits to Gretel that he has lost their way. The children grow frightened. The Sandman arrives and helps them drift off to sleep. As they settle into each other, the children say their evening prayer. In a dream state they are visited by forest creatures and children who safely guide them home to their loving parents with a table full of food.
ACTIII
The gingerbread house: The Dew Fairy arrives and wakes up the children. They can hardly believe their eyes when they see a house covered in candies and sweets. They greedily grab treats from the house and fail to notice the Witch observing them. With a candy spell, the Witch captures the children and decides to fatten Hansel up. Gretel breaks the Witch’s spell and sets Hansel free. When the Witch asks her to look in the oven, she pretends she doesn’t know how to so the Witch must show her. When the Witch peers into the oven, the children shove her inside and shut the door. The oven explodes. Suddenly the children from their dreams appear before them and Hansel and Gretel break the Witch’s curse. The mother and father find the children, and all express gratitude for their salvation.

SYNOPSIS
OSA’s EDUCATION PROGRAMS
OPERA San Antonio encourages and promotes arts education by sharing the beauty of opera and its tradition of rich, relevant storytelling through our educational projects. Our programs serve, represent, and educate our community in many ways. Our main program, “OPERA in Schools” provides 20-50 minute presentations free to any area K-12 school along with access to online videos and resources. In the 202223 Season, OSA visited a record breaking 50 schools. 32 of these schools were classified as Title I. “OPERA in Schools” was shared across all 10 San Antonio city districts and beyond. Online resources for teachers include the use of our award winning five-part video series “Explore Opera for Kids!” with accompanying Google worksheets. These videos have been used by over 50 schools and have received over 10,000 views. In total, we impacted 7,740 K-12 students last year by sharing 61 school performances.
As part of our educational programming, each school who participates in an OSA program is extended an invitation for students to experience opera live at the Tobin Center as part of our “Behind the Scenes” series. 63 schools participated last season for a combined total of 1,670 free admissions for students and teachers to OSA’s productions of Pagliacci and Romeo and Juliet at the Tobin Center. An additional 761 veterans were also invited to participate in this program which offers access to final dress performances, opportunities to attend Q&A sessions with the cast, and access to free tickets.
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, during the 2022-23 Season, OSA was able to offer a total of 914 free tickets to students, teachers, and veterans. Our partnership with
