OPERA IN FILM TEXAS OPERA ALLIANCE

In October 2020, OPERA San Antonio along with Houston Grand Opera, Austin Opera, The Dallas Opera, and Fort Worth Opera, announced the creation of the Texas Opera Alliance (TOA), a new partnership of the five Texas companies. The mission of TOA is to advance and diversify the operatic art form through innovative production partnerships, audience-building initiatives, and collaborative investments in new works, ensuring that opera continues to thrive in the Lone Star State. This alliance produced two unique and unprecedented opera films and boasts 21,263 combined views on Marquee TV along with two successful premieres at the Blue Starlite Drive-In theatresin Austin. These films were directed by E. Loren Meeker in collaboration with Houston Grand Opera provided patrons with innovative new ways to experience opera.

Vinkensport, or The Finch Opera, composed by David T. Little, takes place in a small town featuring six contestants participating in a finchsitting competition. The crafty libretto written by Royce Vavrek uses spirit-lifting humor to deliver us to moments of great empathy, as we - like these characters - long to feel that irreplaceable sense of togetherness. This film, co-directed by Ryan McKinny, has been critically acclaimed by Opera News and The Wall Street Journal. Fred Cohn of Opera News says, “The video realization, by McKinny and Meeker, is well-nigh ideal!”
The Impresario
The Impresario, a rarely performed one act by Mozart, featured warring divas, a show within a show, and one of the composer’s greatest overtures is brilliantly updated into a new English version by playwright Jim Luigs. The work’s drama-filled auditions takes place, appropriately

E. Loren Meeker and Francesco Milioto have set the opera community on fire with this live interview series streaming on Facebook Page, YouTube, and Twitter. Since its creation in March of 2020 we have featured 37 guest artists including local favorites such as David Portillo with over (#) and counting combined views.
We’ve had a blast connecting with fellow opera lovers during this special Zoom gathering created just for OSA donors. Each gathering is timed to coincide with a streamed broadcast from a major opera house. Patrons have the opportunity to connect with OSA leadership and a special guest artist who lends their experience and insight on the opera being streamed. Since its creation last March, we are proud to have joined you for (#) sessions with access to artists such as Susan Graham, Jill Grove, Jennifer Rowley, David Portillo, Leah Crochetto, Daniel Belcher, and Denyce Graves just to name a few.

In November 2020 a special edition series called “Charlas Musicales” was launched and hosted by Cecilia Duarte with guest artist Rafael Moras completely in Spanish. Our hope for this important new series is to connect and engage with our Latino community and educate the public on the important work latinos are doing for the opera industry. OSA cares deeply about our Veterans. During the month of October, we worked with Joe Manci at the Blue Skies Air Force Retirement Village of San Antonio to create a virtual concert for their residents. We were pleased to share our passion for opera with this amazing organization as a part of their In-House Channel series that reached close to 200 members of their wonderful community. Events like these have helped us stay connected to the citizens of San Antonio most at risk during this tumultuous year.
TOSCA, TPR, and OSA
In a throwback to the era of gathering around the radio with family to enjoy an evening together, OSA, Texas Public Radio, and the San Antonio Symphony partnered to present “Tuesday Night at the Opera” August 25, 2020 on KPAC. This free broadcast of the 2019 production of Tosca featured Jennifer Rowley, Michael Chioldi, and Rafael Davila with Francesco Milioto conducting the San Antonio Symphony.

LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR A RETURN TO LIVE PERFORMANCES. The company made a triumphant return to live performances at the Tobin Center on May 6 and 8, 2021, with Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. The production featured Metropolitan Opera soprano Brenda Rae in the title role, with local San Antonian Scott Hendricks as Enrico, and Texan Scott Quinn as Edgardo. With this production, OPERA San Antonio became the first company in Texas, and only a handful in the nation, to return to live, indoor performances in 2021.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING
Through your support, OSA continues to share the excitement of opera and joy of storytelling with access to free education and outreach opportunities. In August of 2020, the “Explore Opera for Kids!” videos were adapted into a free school program to encourage early opera education. The five-part series with accompanying worksheets provided fine arts enrichment through music as an opportunity for all students and was designed to complement the curriculum outlined in the state mandated Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in Music, Theatre, History, English, Literature, and Science. During the 2020/21 season, this series was utilized in 35 schools, including the Metropolitans School of Panama, resulting in 14 in-person outreach visits to schools in spring of 2021 and impacting over 5,000 students.

“Explore Opera for Kids!” Through your support, OSA continues to share the excitement of opera and joy of storytelling with access to free education and outreach opportunities. In the summer of 2020, we established our first class of Apprentice Artists in partnership with the Opera Guild of San Antonio. After several rounds of virtual auditions, four artists were selected to be featured in a series of five videos produced in collaboration with the San Antonio Public Library. These videos were packaged into a free education program for schools with over 10,000 views and counting. In 2021, we received the Best of the City Award by San Antonio Magazine for “Best Innovative Online Education”.
Teen Opera Club of Texas
OPERA San Antonio is excited to be a partner in the Teen Opera Club of Texas as an extension of the Texas Opera Alliance (TOA). This club is free for all teens ages 13-19. TOCT promotes opera education and provides fine arts and social enrichment through music. No background in music is required to become a member of this club which strives to make a lasting impact on our next generation by igniting a passion and enthusiasm for opera. Since its inception in October of 2020, the club proudly boasts close to 100 members and counting.
“Classes and opportunites like this are going to help shape a culture of singing at our school...” ~Jason Young Artist Masterclass Series OPERA San Antonio established the new “Young Artist Masterclass Series” in the fall of 2020 with OSA General & Artistic Director E. Loren Meeker and Education Coordinator Madeline Elizondo. This free program was designed to help high school students build artist confidence through mentorship. 27 students registered representing members of the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, 8 schools and 4 private voice studios across San Antonio. A total of 6 free masterclasses were offered for these students between January and April of 2021.

jun/2021 APPR ENTICE AR TIS T PROGRA M This program was established in summer of 2020 to offer local, young artists a chance to gain valuable performance experience. At the end of the program their artistry was featured in virtual concerts offered free to the public. Through your generosity, and the support of the Opera Guild of San Antonio, in 2020 we were able to offer scholarships to four young singers amidst an unprecedented time of cancelation. This summer we were proud to expand the program to five singers with an added partnership with CCSA. This summer, we were proud to expand the program to include five artists and a final public concert in the park through our continued partnership with the Opera Guild of San Antonio, the San Antonio Public Library, and a new partnership with the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio. 2 0 2 0 / 2 1 D O N O R R E PO R T
