Looking back on a year of achievements, we are deeply grateful to you, our cherished supporters, whose contributions have been essential to OPERA San Antonio’s impact in our community. From new works to classic masterpieces, we strive to deliver exceptional productions and educational programs that touch the hearts and minds of all who attend.
Our 10th anniversary season commenced in October with a vibrant production of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, the world’s first mariachi opera, featuring Mariachi Campanas de America. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we provided free access to 1,746 students, teachers, and veterans to the final dress rehearsal and two performances. Leading up to Cruzar, we hosted a significant educational program called OPERA Meets Mariachi which introduced over 1,300 students from 23 schools to the worlds of opera and mariachi music. Educational initiatives like this, along with our 50 free school visits and 20-30 annual free community events, are central to our mission to ensure that opera thrives in San Antonio.
OSA’s community and education programs have grown substantially in our 10 year history, now impacting more than 20,000 citizens per year from diverse communities and backgrounds thanks to our commitment to access, equity, and inclusion. Fiscal stability is a cornerstone of our values, helping us achieve nine straight seasons of balanced budgets, ensuring that th

OSA’s 2023/24 Season marked a period of remarkable achievement, with a strategic focus on expanding access for families and the wider community With the launch of Hansel and Gretel, OSA became the first organization to incorporate all 5 Resident Companies of The Tobin Center (OPERA San Antonio, Classical Music Institute, Ballet San Antonio, Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, Youth Orchestras of San Antonio) into one production. This collaboration exemplifies the unifying power of opera, bringing together organizations to create a stronger cultural community in San Antonio.
Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel is a richly composed piece clearly influenced by the composer ’ s time spent assisting Richard Wagner This production featured 49 musicians from The Orchestra San Antonio/Classical Music Institute along with 6 young musicians from Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, 6 dancers from Ballet San Antonio, and 12 young singers from the Children‘s Chorus of San Antonio Children in attendance at the opera were given free Hansel and Gretel books to take home as a keepsake.
“(Students) had seen/heard about the (OSA) outreach program coming to our school last year and wanted to see a full production. They loved the performance...They were shocked that they got to go for free, and wanted to dress up for the occasion at the next opera. ”
“At first I thought (opera) was something that's only for old people. I absolutely loved it and I want to go see more of them if possible.”
The season concluded with The Pirates of Penzance, ma OSA's first-ever production of a Gilbert & Sullivan work show delighted audiences and achieved our strongest t sales since the start of pandemic, a testament to the end appeal of presenting diverse and creative repertoire creat
Sean Curran and conducted by James Lowe. Principal cast members Madison Leonard, David Walton, Hugh Russell, Bill McMurray, and Claudia Chapa were joined by 24 members of the local OSA Chorus, lead by Chorus Master Dottie Randall. Children in attendance were given free pirate bandanas to take home as a souvenir
The whole experience was accessible and relatable.”
“I like felt my jaw broken from how many times I dropped it, the show was absolutely fantastical. it was so much fun I definitely recommend especially if it’s your first opera. This makes me want to go to more operas. It’s so fun and amazing ”

Last season, OSA’s community production was a family friendly, traveling production of Amahl and the Night Visitors by Gian Carlo Menotti OSA took opera on the road and out into the community to offer performances in four venues: the Edgewood Fine Arts Academy, Magik Theatre, Carver Cultural Community Center, and the Alamo Heights United Methodist Church Notably, performances at Edgewood and the Carver were offered for free to students and community members, ensuring greater access to this powerful art form Our partnership with the Magik Theatre was a new
