LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR As we reach the end of 2021, we want to give our utmost thanks to you, our tremendous family of supporters. Opera has the ability to bring
people
together
from
all
walks
of
life,
to
strengthen
communities, and to bring magic and joy into our hearts and homes. Your commitment to OPERA San Antonio has propelled this company vision despite the challenges of the past twenty-two months.
While the current and past season unfolded in ways we could never
have
gracefully
conceived shift
into
prior new,
to
the
pandemic,
innovative
we
projects
were
able
and
exciting
to
partnerships. We joined Houston Grand Opera in the production of two groundbreaking operatic films. We grew our presence by offering multiple
online
programs
-
Explore
Opera
for
Kids!,
Beyond
the
Production, Charlas Musicales, and Cocktails & Conversation.
Thanks to the commitment of individual donors, foundations, and friends,
OSA
was
not
only
able
to
sustain,
but
blaze
a
path
for
returning to live performance. We became the first opera company in Texas to return to live, indoor performances in May of 2021 with our production of Lucia di Lammermoor. We built upon that success with our fall production of Don Giovanni which was combined with our first-ever gala, From Seville to San Antonio.
We are pleased to report that with your philanthropic help, OPERA San Antonio has maintained a balanced budget for the last six years of our young company’s existence and is on track to do so again at the end of the current season. Your continued generosity is the key to our future.
Opera has stood the test of time through war, misfortunes, and heartache, and we are not backing down now. Opera has the power to connect people. When story and music come together, a world of emotions, empathy, and catharsis is opened up inside of us. Having these shared experiences has never been more important than it is now.

(TOA),
a
new
partnership
between
the
five
companies.
The mission of TOA is to advance and diversify the operatic art
form
through
innovative
production
partnerships,
audience-building initiatives, and collaborative investments in new works, ensuring that opera continues to thrive in the Lone Star State
The establishment of the TOA resulted in two films boasting over

on

two
successful premieres at the Blue Starlite Drive-In theatres in Austin.

OPERA IN FILM
Vinkensport, or The Finch Opera, is a comic, one-act opera composed by David T. Little with a libretto by Royce Vavrek. It takes
place
in
a
small
town
featuring
six
contestants
participating in a finch-sitting competition.
In early 2020, in response to the looming pandemic, the opera was reenvisioned specifically for film by Co-Directors E. Loren Meeker
and
Ryan
McKinny
who
use
spirit-lifting
humor
to
deliver us to moments of great empathy, as we - like these characters
-
long
to
feel
that
irreplaceable
sense
of
togetherness. This film has been critically acclaimed by Opera News and The Wall Street Journal. Fred Cohn of Opera News says, “The video realization, by McKinny and Meeker, is wellnigh ideal!”

APPRENTICE ARTIST PROGRAM The OSA Apprentice Artist program was established in the summer
of
2020
to
provide
local,
young
artists
the
opportunity to work with industry professionals and gain valuable performance experience. Through your generosity, and

Guild

San
Antonio, we were able to offer scholarships to four young singers amidst an unprecedented time of cancelation. In spring of 2021, we were proud to expand the program to include five local artists.
TEEN OPERA CLUB OF TEXAS
OPERA San Antonio is excited to be a partner in the Teen Opera Club of Texas (TOCT) as an extension of the Texas Opera Alliance (TOA). Established in the fall of 2020, this club remains free for all teens ages 13-19 and promotes opera
education

DECEMBER/2020 SAN ANTONIO BOTANICAL GARDEN Four local artists brought holiday cheer to the San Antonio Botanical Garden in December of 2020 with a concert of festive carols as a part of their Winter Soirée. We look forward to a return to more live community events this season!
APRIL/2021 LIVING IN MY SKIN In April of 2021, in collaboration with the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, OSA participated in the unveiling of a new mural titled "Living in My Skin". Apprentice Artist J. Pierre Moore gave a truly emotional performance for a very appreciative audience. The purpose of the project is to shine a light on today's reality and to help bring about a better understanding of each other as a community.

2020/21 FINANCIAL OVERVIEW
The 2020/21 Season was unprecedented in every way as we continued to navigate the pandemic. We focused on maintaining financial stability, retaining staff, producing as many artistic products as possible across a wide spectrum of opportunities, and returning to live performances with local and guest artists.
In a normal year, the budget for OPERA San Antonio would be designed to cover the expense of two operas produced at the Tobin Center ($600,000 each) plus administrative expenses ($300,000) for a total of $1.5 million. Anticipating that the 2020/21 Season would be challenging, we reduced our projected budget to just under $1 million. As the pandemic progressed we continued to reduce our expenses throughout the year. OSA developed more programming than ever before with all of our digital content being produced with almost no cost to the company, other than staff resources, and our production of Lucia di Lammermoor was produced on half the typical show budget.
Thanks to the dedicated board and staff, we were able to return to live performance, hold our annual fundraiser, secure new government funding, and strengthen commitments from you, our amazing family of supporters.
This strategy allowed us to break even in the 2019/20 Season and helped us build a small surplus at the end of the 2020/21 Season. This means OSA has achieved a new milestone. Many foundations and other donors have recommended having all funds on hand before doing a production. We have been working towards this goal since our first season, and have now reached this critical position for the first time at the close of the 2020/21 Season.
We would not be here without you and are deeply grateful for your continued support as we strive to build a company that is an integral part of the cultural fabric in the city of San Antonio.
