Director’s Message

En cette fin de saison 2020-2021 sans précédent, c’est le cœur plein de gratitude que nous vous offrons ce bouquet de beaux airs et d’ensembles d’opéra. L’Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal exprime son immense gratitude au personnel de la Place des Arts, qui nous a permis de venir travailler dans ses grandes salles de répétitions, d’offrir une formation de haut niveau et de réaliser des projets porteurs, dans le respect des normes sanitaires et en toute solidarité.

Ce concert marque la fin de leur stage pour Jean-Philippe Mc Clish, Matthew Dalen, Holly Kroeker et Andrea Van Pelt. Leur contribution a été inspirante et fort appréciée de tous. Nous leur souhaitons tout le meilleur pour leur carrière et nous nous réjouissons à l’avance de les retrouver bientôt à l’Opéra de Montréal. Pour Kirsten LeBlanc, Vanessa Croome, Sarah Dufresne, Lucie St-Martin, Sydney Frodsham et Geoffrey Schellenberg c’est aussi un au revoir!

At the end of this unprecedented 2020-2021 season, it is with hearts full of gratitude that we bring you this bouquet of wonderful opera arias and ensembles. The Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal is deeply grateful to the staff of Place des Arts, which allowed us to come work in its large rehearsal rooms, where we were able to provide high-level training and undertake forward-looking projects while complying with health and safety measures in a show of solidarity.

This concert marks the end of the internship period for JeanPhilippe Mc Clish, Matthew Dalen, Holly Kroeker and Andrea Van Pelt. Their contribution has been inspiring and is much appreciated by all. We wish them the very best in their careers as we look forward to having them return to the Opéra de Montréal soon. As for Kirsten LeBlanc, Vanessa Croome, Sarah Dufresne, Lucie St-Martin, Sydney Frodsham and Geoffrey Schellenberg, we’ll be seeing them again soon too!

Une saison extraordinaire An extraordinary season Pendant leur résidence à l’Opéra de Montréal, les artistes bénéficient de l’expertise de spécialistes chevronnés et de l’encadrement nécessaire pour se préparer aux prises de rôles à court, moyen et long terme. Cette rétrospective couvre la période de septembre 2020 à mai 2021 et démontre comment l’Atelier lyrique se distingue par ses projets uniques : un tremplin de perfectionnement professionnel au cœur de l’Opéra de Montréal !

During their residency at the Opéra de Montréal, artists benefit from the expertise of seasoned specialists and the coaching they need to prepare for short-, mediumand long-term roles. This retrospective covers the period of September 2020 to May 2021 and demonstrates how the Atelier lyrique distinguishes itself by its unique projects: a steppingstone to further professional development at the heart of the Opéra de Montréal!

Concerts & collaborations La première mondiale de L’hiver attend beaucoup de moi cet automne a mis en lumière le talent de nos créatrices et a rejoint un public bien au-delà de la salle de spectacle. Parmi les autres temps forts de cette saison, citons le concert « Mahler : Aurore et crépuscule » en collaboration avec l’Orchestre de l’Agora, et une clinique d’orchestre intensive avec des musiciens de l’Orchestre Métropolitain et sous la direction de Nicolas Ellis.

The world premiere of L’hiver attend beaucoup de moi this fall put the spotlight on our female creators and reached an audience far beyond the performance hall. Other highlights of the season include the concert “Mahler: Aurore et crepuscule” in collaboration with the Orchestre de l’Agora, and an intensive orchestra workshop with the musicians of the Orchestre Métropolitain and under the direction of Nicolas Ellis.

Formation Training Nos artistes ont eu un programme très enrichissant cette saison, bénéficiant entre autres des précieux conseils de Yannick Nézet-Séguin lors d’une classe de maître privée en novembre dernier.

Our artists have had a full schedule this season, benefiting from, among many other activities, a private masterclass with Yannick Nézet-Séguin last November.

Développement de carrière Professional development Les sessions d’enregistrement mensuelles, dans un contexte professionnel de grande qualité, ont permis aux artistes de promouvoir leur talent en vue de futures auditions et de perfectionner l’expression de leur art devant une caméra. De nombreux autres ateliers ont eu lieu en ligne, dotant nos artistes des outils nécessaires pour la partie hors scène de leur carrière.

Monthly recording sessions provided artists the opportunity to showcase their talent for future audition calls, and to perfect the skill of performing in front of a camera – in a highly professional setting. Many other workshops took place online, equipping our artists with the tools needed for the off-stage portion of their careers.

In Memoriam C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous avons appris le décès de Lucien (Lou) Fauteux le 3 mars dernier. Tous les membres du personnel et du conseil de l’Opéra de Montréal – en particulier la famille de l’Atelier lyrique – offrent leurs plus sincères condoléances à Elizabeth (Liz) Wirth et à la famille. Depuis quatre ans, Liz est très engagée comme administratrice de la compagnie et comme membre du Cercle des ambassadeurs, elle et Lou étant des philanthropes généreux et enthousiastes. Leur mécénat s’articule autour du soutien à la formation professionnelle des artistes de l’Atelier lyrique, encourageant la relève lors du Gala Talent et The staff and board of the soutenant directement l’essor Opéra de Montréal – and de nos artistes en résidence the Atelier lyrique family in particular – were saddened by Lucien en adhérant, dès sa création, (Lou) Fauteux’s passing on March 3, 2021. VANESSA CROOME La soprano canadienne Vanessa Croome cherche à présenter son répertoire de manière accessible tout en préservant son caractère traditionnel. Elle a récemment interprété Barbarina (Les Noces de Figaro), Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring), Morgana (Alcina) et Cunégonde (Candide).

Vanessa est passionnée par l’utilisation de la voix humaine pour partager avec le public des récits que l’on entend rarement. Elle participe à la création de plusieurs œuvres, notamment L’hiver attend beaucoup de moi à l’Opéra de Montréal et comme doublure pour la première mondiale de An American Soldier à l’Opera Theater de Saint-Louis.

Canadian soprano Vanessa Croome has a fascination for classical aesthetics mixed with modern twists, aiming to portray her repertoire in a relatable fashion while preserving its traditional integrity. Recent credits include Barbarina (Le nozze di Figaro), Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring), Morgana (Alcina), and Cunégonde (Candide).

Vanessa is passionate about the use of the human voice as a vessel for stories that are not often shared. She lent her voice to various new works, most notably L’hiver attend beaucoup de moi at l’Opéra de Montréal and as a cover for the world premiere of An American Soldier at the Opera Theater of Saint Louis.

Elle est fière de faire partie d’équipes communautaires qui conçoivent des œuvres spécialement pour leur public, comme l’Orchestre de l’Agora et Musique 3 Femmes.

She prides herself in being part of communitybased teams designing works specifically for their local audiences, such as l’Orchestre de l’Agora and Musique 3 Femmes.

Elle a été finaliste du Concours Centre Stage de la Canadian Opera Company. Elle est lauréate du Prix Étoiles Stingray 2018 à l’Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal et du Prix d’art vocal Elizabeth Wirth de l’École de musique Schulich de l’Université McGill. Elle a fait ses débuts professionnels dans le cadre du programme Gerdine Young Artists de l’Opera Theatre de Saint-Louis en 2018.

She was a finalist for the Canadian Opera Company Centre Stage Competition, the Opéra de Montréal Atelier Lyrique (winner of the 2018 Stringray Rising Star award), and the Elizabeth Wirth Vocal Prize at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University. She made her professional debut as a Gerdine Young Artist with the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2018.

MATTHEW DALEN Encensé pour ses « notes aigües explosives, étincelantes et incandescentes comme des feux d’artifice », Matthew Dalen est un ténor recherché.

Sa fascination pour la technique vocale lui permet d’interpréter certains des rôles les plus exigeants du répertoire canonique de l’opéra.

Récemment, il a joué Borsa dans Rigoletto (Edmonton Opera) en plus d’agir comme doublure du personnage de Lensky dans Eugène Onéguine et de celui d’Edgardo dans Lucia di Lammermoor (Opéra de Montréal).

Sa prestation dans le rôle-titre de Fierabras de Schubert (Toronto Operetta Theatre) lui a valu les éloges de la critique.

SARAH DUFRESNE Sarah Dufresne is a Canadian soprano known for her clarity of tone, rapid coloratura, and diverse repertoire.

Her varied repertoire includes Tytania in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mrs. Fiorentino in Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, and Galatea in Handel’s Acis and Galatea.

Her technique and ease on stage allow her to perform with leading operatic companies and symphony orchestras, including Against the Grain Theatre, Waterloo Chamber Players, Grand Philharmonic Choir of Kitchener Waterloo, Opera McGill, and Halifax Summer Opera. Sarah has also completed a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, an internship at the Lachine International Vocal Academy, the Stratford Summer Music Program, and the Scuola Giovanni Grasso.

Canadian-American mezzo-soprano Sydney Frodsham explores her roles through the lens of raw emotions and poetic sensitivity. Recent performances include Dritte Dame in Die Zauberflöte, Irene in Theodora, Bradamante in Alcina, and Knabenalt in Malher’s cantata Das klagende Lied.

She feels compelled to use music as a vehicle for connection, which not only fuels her love for traditional opera but for contemporary works as well. She has been a part of the creation of multiple new works, from opera to song cycles, such as La razon del viaje and Tibet Fantasia (Voices of Change), He Shall Prepare a Way (BYU), and Le flambeau de la nuit (Ballet Opéra Pantomime).

Recent influential mentors include Ariane Girard, Diane Reich, Darrell Babidge, and Virginia Dupuy.

This young mezzo-soprano has also been privileged to perform with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Voices of Change, Brigham Young University Opera, OperaWorks LA, and Meadows Opera Theater (Southern Methodist University).

This summer, she will participate as a member of the Apprentice Singer Program with The Santa Fe Opera.

HOLLY KROEKER Établie à Montréal, Holly Kroeker est coach vocale d’opéra, pianiste accompagnatrice et répétitrice recherchée. Elle vise à susciter la curiosité, à faciliter la communication et à responsabiliser ses collaborateurs.

Holly Kroeker is an operatic vocal coach, collaborative pianist, and sought-after répétiteur based in Montreal. She aims to foster curiosity, encourage open communication, and empower her collaborators.

L’authentique joie qu’elle éprouve à jouer, surtout dans les grands canons du répertoire opératique, l’a amenée à relever, avec courage et sang-froid, des défis comme de participer en atelier à Silent Light de Prestini/Vavrek au Centre des arts de Banff et au Flambeau de la nuit de Tanguay-Labrosse/Kemeid monté par le Ballet-Opéra-Pantomime et l’ensemble I Musici. Elle a été assistante pianiste-répétitrice pour Eugène Onéguine et Lucia di Lammermoor à l’Opéra de Montréal et Twenty Seven (Atelier lyrique).

KIRSTEN LEBLANC On reconnaît la soprano canadienne Kirsten LeBlanc pour sa voix ample et sa présence scénique habitée. Animée par une vive curiosité et un travail technique rigoureux, elle cherche à créer une connexion sincère avec le public à travers ses interprétations.

Elle donne libre cours à son imagination débordante en interprétant les grandes dames de Mozart, les héroïnes de Strauss et les amoureuses de Puccini. ANDREA VAN PELT Canadian pianist Andrea Van Pelt is dedicated to creating and honouring beauty through music, storytelling, and poetry.

In 2020–2021, she is the rehearsal pianist on Riders to the Sea and Le flambeau de la nuit (I Musici and Opéra de Montréal). In 2019–2020, she worked as assistant répétiteur on productions of La Traviata, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and as music director and pianist on The Garden of Alice (Vancouver Opera).

For the past six years, she has been freelancing as a coach and assistant teacher both privately and at the University of Toronto. She discovered her passion for curating musical curiosity during her time as director of the music department at Oak Hill Academy in Hamilton.
