Impact Report 24-25

Impact Report 24-25
Dear friends,
I am profoundly grateful and genuinely excited to welcome you to this report, as I address you for the first time as General Director. I begin by honouring Patrick Corrigan for his extraordinary leadership. His vision, generosity, and dedication have shaped Opéra de Montréal in ways that touch every aspect of our work. It is a privilege to carry forward the passion and care he has brought to our company.
I step into this role with a clear commitment: to continue building on our strengths while embracing the opportunities of the future. Developing new works that reflect the voices of our time will remain central to our mission. Opera is a living, evolving art form, and through creation we ensure it continues to resonate, inspire, and shape our city, communities, and audiences for generations to come.
The Atelier lyrique is among our proudest achievements, a place where artistry takes root and the next generation of opera is nurtured. Supporting young artists in residence, helping them grow and explore, brings energy and innovation to our stages. By guiding them on this journey, we celebrate their talent today and cultivate the leaders, creators, and performers who will carry opera into the future.
Civic engagement and education pulse at the heart of our work. By opening our doors to schools, communities, and first-time operagoers, we spark curiosity, awaken wonder, and invite dialogue. Developing the audiences of tomorrow is a responsibility we hold close, ensuring opera remains accessible, inclusive, and meaningful.
I extend my sincere thanks to our Board of Directors for their guidance and trust, and to our outstanding staff and collaborators whose talent, creativity, and dedication bring this company to life every day.
And none of this would be possible without you—our cherished audience, generous donors, and dedicated partners. You are the reason we can dream boldly. Your support and belief in our mission are the foundation of our success, and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
As you explore these pages, I hope you feel the energy, creativity, and community spirit that define our work. We are building something daring, vibrant, and deeply rooted in Montréal, and I cannot wait to share this journey with you.
With thanks and anticipation,
Jean-Pierre Primiani General Director

Originally a co-production between Canadian Opera Company, Houston Grand Opera, Opéra national de Bordeaux, and Opera Australia, this “wonderful wacky production” (Ariadne Lih, Opera Canada) by director Joan Font opened our season with flair.
“Opéra de Montréal launches its season with a unifying and triumphant performance! You leave the theatre with fabulous tunes in your head and a light heart.”
Under the artistic direction of Michel Beaulac, emotion knows no borders.
This season was marked by two prestigious nods: Michel Beaulac’s nomination for Opera Canada’s Ruby Award* in Toronto, and La Reine-garçon, nominated at the International Opera Awards in Munich for Best World Premiere. The resounding acclaim for this opera by Julien Bilodeau and Michel Marc Bouchard reaffirmed how a clear, resonant artistic vision can give rise to a true gem of the repertoire.
“We must constantly step outside our comfort zone, be bold, and seek a link between what we present and the social concerns of our time.
— MICHEL BEAULAC,
Artistic Director

“Forget your preconceptions about contemporary opera. La Reine-garçon is mature and fully realized — rich with sumptuous music and a story drawn from history. It expands Canada’s operatic repertoire and stands as a masterpiece ready to conquer the world.

Roles, projects, and milestones achieved by our artists.
This season, 70% of leading roles were performed by artists from our Atelier lyrique — a remarkable testament to our commitment to offering real professional opportunities to emerging talent.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Career Launch Program once again supported a new cohort of promising artists this season. This essential funding gave them the momentum to bring their projects to life and advance their careers. Here, two graduates share how this support has propelled their professional journeys!
“Getting invited to sing internationally is incredible. But there’s always the practical side: flights, meals, travel… The Career Launch Program let me say yes without hesitation. I dove in, sang Mozart across France and Belgium, made the trip to Zürich to meet mentors, and opened doors I didn’t even know existed!”
“Honestly, it feels like a dream come true. After so many long hours of work, just knowing someone believes in me makes all the difference. The Career Launch Program helped me prep for a Canadian tour, a New York audition, and competitions in France… I really feel like my dream is finally starting to happen!”
33,000
spectators attended performances this season.
5,000
young people took part in our youth programs — from reduced ticket prices and student dress rehearsals to group rates and pre-show cocktails.
These initiatives continue to grow in popularity, and it’s a joy to welcome new generations discovering the magic of opera at Place des Arts!

Beyond our mainstage productions, we create moments that bring our community together. Here are three highlights from the season — unique gatherings that remind us how art connects us all.
Focused on our Civic Impact and Education work, this event brought together La Gang à Rambrou and Espace Transition, celebrating the transformative power of music and the spirit of belonging.
“Thank you again for such a wonderful evening. It was a real pleasure! You’re all doing incredible work — congratulations!”

A magical day for families filled with creative workshops, face painting, music, and treats — all supporting our Education programs.
“The Kermesse des Enfants was wonderful! The workshops were engaging and the mini-operas were delightful. Our son Phoenix thought it was ‘cool!’”
– THE MARTEL FAMILY, donors
Hosted by Board member Vanda Treiser at her picturesque estate, this private concert featured soprano Sarah Dufresne and countertenor Ian Sabourin, with Jerome de los Santos at the piano.
“Thank you for everything you do for each performance — your work allows us to focus fully on our music, knowing we can always count on you. It makes such a difference.”

Generously sponsored by the Zhao-Ionescu Family
“Congratulations on the exceptional quality of these performances. I was told most of the singers were from the Atelier lyrique— astonishing! The vocal, linguistic, and musical standards were world-class. Bravo for such meticulous preparation. I will recommend the program to many singers.”
It’s Sunday, February 9, 2025, just before 2 p.m. Families are settling into Théâtre Maisonneuve, which will soon be packed. Outside, the cold bites, leaving children’s cheeks rosy — but inside, their excitement melts any chill. In moments, mittens and hats tucked away, they will step into a wondrous story.
This story begins with a lonely lighthouse, charming passing ships and even winning the moon’s attention to stave off boredom. A beautiful allegory of friendship, full of adventure and playful nods, brought to life by the talented young artists of Opéra de Montréal’s Atelier lyrique. In the audience, eyes sparkle — not just the children’s. Le Phare touches hearts of all ages, from seven to seventy-seven… and beyond.
An immediate favourite
But the magic isn’t only on stage. The story of how this work came to be is just as remarkable. It began in November 2022 at the École nationale de théâtre, when Artistic Director Michel Beaulac and Atelier lyrique Director Jennifer Szeto attended a workshop where young artists presented very short creations.
“We were there for pleasure, to see what inspired the librettists and how composers translated ideas into music,” recalls Michel Beaulac.
“But we were so moved by Le Phare that we approached its creators — two Canadians, Laurence Jobidon and Maria Reva — and asked them to develop the project further, with and for Opéra de Montréal.”
Opera listens to the community
The creators returned to their work, expanding the initial five-minute piece into a twenty-minute opera, which the company included in the season program, paired with L’Enfant et les sortilèges.
“A few months earlier, we had staged Ravel’s work at Théâtre Paradoxe, an organization promoting social and professional integration for young adults facing vulnerabilities. Both the young artists working on the project and the audience were captivated.”
“We felt the joy in the room — with the Paradoxe team and the community. The family aspect then became central to our mission, and we decided to present Ravel’s work again in the 24-25 season, paired with the world premiere of Le Phare, perfectly complementing this youth-focused program.”
The three performances of this double bill at Théâtre Maisonneuve were a resounding success. Hundreds of children, accompanied by parents or grandparents, experienced opera for the very first time. Meanwhile, a range of educational activities took place in schools — proving that the light of a lighthouse can indeed travel far!
“Without the gifts we receive each year, we could never have turned an idea into an opera,” explains the Artistic Director. And we would never have had the means to launch these family opera events.
“This is the artistic vision of Opéra de Montréal — the closeness between philanthropists and creation, the power we share to carry out innovative projects spanning all aspects of our mission: opera creation, accessibility for all audiences, training the next generation, and community engagement.”
— Michel Beaulac
On behalf of the creators, the young audiences, families, and the communities we serve: thank you. You, our donors, play a vital role in the growth of the company and in the story of opera in Quebec.
“To me, donors are like missionaries, fully committing to an unknown yet fascinating adventure with us — an adventure called creation.”
— Michel Beaulac, Zhao-Ionescu Family – Artistic Director
How do we pass timeless classics on to our community? Pierre Vachon and his team of teaching artists create co-creation spaces inspired by these works. Every year, new co-creation ideas flourish — along with the number of participants.

Did you know?
Over nearly two years, a team of 35 technicians brought this monumental Hamlet set to life right here in Montréal, under the direction of Frédérick Ouellet— it took three trucks to transport the entire production to Place des Arts!
“To put Saturday night into perspective—never in twenty years on this stage have we heard anything like it. No Traviata, Tosca, Norma, Mimì, Don Giovanni, Otello or Falstaff will remain in our memories quite like Sarah Dufresne’s Ophélie of 2024.”
— CHRISTOPHE HUSS, Le Devoir
“Sarah
Dufresne is dazzling! A discovery for me—I can’t wait to see her in another opera.”

This season, the Atelier lyrique buzzed with artistic energy, fueled by new partnerships and a renewed commitment to contemporary creation.
Three major collaborations stood out: masterclasses with the Orchestre Métropolitain, development projects with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and a first-ever international exchange with the Verdi Conservatory in Turin, Italy.
The season was also vibrant in new works: Le Phare by Laurence Jobidon premiered globally, and the Opera Creation Forum, in partnership with Musique 3 Femmes, brought together 8 artistic teams around 16 innovative projects.
Strategic initiatives are also expanding the program: a new stage director residency complements offerings for singers and pianists; a micro-residency welcomes young singers still in training, linking them to the next generation of artists who may join the Atelier after their studies; and a new $10,000 Jury Prize continues to attract top talent at the National Auditions, solidifying the Atelier lyrique as a reference program for emerging artists.
This season confirms our commitment to training, supporting, and inspiring the opera stars of tomorrow.
Through our Social Action and Education programs, Opéra de Montréal reaches communities across Quebec and beyond — laying the first steps toward lasting connections built on listening, sharing, and trust.
From Montréal to Iqaluit in Nunavut, and from the Outaouais and Montérégie to Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and Ontario, thousands of young people are introduced to opera each year.
Education is at the heart of our mission, opening doors to music for all curious minds eager to express, dream, and engage.
Opéra de Montréal works with a wide diversity of schools:
Schools serving Indigenous communities
Schools in underprivileged areas
Promoting cultural inclusion and accessibility, this commitment aims to reach schools with multiple facets, reflecting the richness of our society.
Specialized schools (intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum, related challenges)
Public and private schools
Private donations now account for 41% of Opéra de Montréal’s revenue.
In Europe, arts companies are often largely supported by public funds. In the United States, however, private donors and foundations sustain much of the cultural landscape — at the Metropolitan Opera, for example, philanthropy accounts for over 71% of annual revenue*
In Canada, a hybrid model prevails. Companies must balance public funding with private donations to close their budgets. The challenge has grown since the pandemic: production costs have risen by as much as 50% for certain expenses, while government support has remained largely unchanged. To fulfill our mission and maintain ambitious artistic programming, Opéra de Montréal calls increasingly on the generosity of its community.
Private donations to Opéra de Montréal have surged 250% over eight years.
In 2023-2024, private giving represented 41% of total revenue, up from 18% in 2015-2016.
This growth reflects our artistic vision, accessibility efforts, and social engagement, which attract new philanthropists each year. As Jean-Pierre Primiani explains: “Quebecers recognize the value of our work creating new operas and showcasing local talent. They understand that these artistic choices come with a cost — and they are ready to invest.
In February 2025, Vickie Zhao and Alex Ionescu made a major gift of $5 million to support Opéra de Montréal’s artistic mission. Their generosity will be recognized over the next five years: the company’s artistic leadership will carry the name “Zhao-Ionescu Family”, honouring their role as Visionary Artistic Patrons.
What sets philanthropy at Opéra de Montréal apart is the sincere, lasting connection between the institution and its supporters.
“Our donors are considered a community — OUR community — with whom we share our ideas, our successes and challenges, our hopes and ambitions.”
— Jean-Pierre Primiani
Donors enjoy exclusive access, from season launches and reserved bars to artist talkbacks and behind-the-scenes visits — experiences that bring them closer to the art they love. Friendships often blossom between philanthropists and our singers, deepening the bond between community and creativity.
For those joining our philanthropic family: welcome!
Welcome and thank you for contributing to our mission. Together, we share one passion — opera — and one purpose: bringing its magic to life.
“Dare to dream big, set ambitious goals for our city, and reach out to others.”
— Vickie Zhao & Alex Ionescu, Visionary Artistic Patrons

Lauren Margison (Atelier lyrique 2016-2018) made her role debut as the iconic Mimì.
Lauren Margison was dazzling, born to embody Mimì. Her voice and sensitivity are perfectly suited to this role.
Her voice possesses natural trills, brilliant high notes, fluid legato, and impressive pianissimi.
She also displays excellent diction, with accents placed where needed— all essential qualities for an ideal Mimì.
“The ship may have a new captain, but its course remains steady. And the adventure continues, with a crew of dedicated professionals and engaged philanthropists on board.”
First and foremost, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to warmly thank Patrick Corrigan, who has steered Opéra de Montréal for ten remarkable years. Ten years, ten seasons, hundreds of extraordinary performances, and thousands of new audience members.
Ten years of staying the course, through calm seas and storms alike—including the pandemic years—reinventing opera in general and Opéra de Montréal in particular.
Ten years of nurturing and championing a forward-thinking vision for the future.
And ten years of welcoming philanthropists into the daily life of our opera in increasingly meaningful ways.
Thank you, Patrick. You have laid the foundations for a new, bolder, more accessible, and inclusive opera—solid foundations that give us confidence as we look toward the future.
Jean-Pierre Primiani has been unanimously appointed as our new General Director. This choice is deliberate. Beyond his deep understanding of the sector and his management expertise, Jean-Pierre served for more than eight years as Head of Philanthropy for our company. His appointment reflects our commitment to strengthening ties with the private sector and with the donors who are at the heart of our community.
In a time when creating opera costs more than ever, your support is essential for Opéra de Montréal to be the flagship institution we all dream of: bold, nurturing local talent, supporting young artists, students, remote communities, and vulnerable populations.
Over the years, Patrick and Jean-Pierre have shared a common vision and passion for opera. This alignment ensures a smooth transition and continuity of the artistic and philanthropic strategies already in place.
As Board President, I want to close with a few words on the overall health of the company. While 24-25 was a fruitful season—across attendance, subscriptions, donations, and social initiatives—Opéra de Montréal, like all cultural institutions, operates in a challenging financial environment. Balancing creativity with fiscal responsibility remains our primary challenge.
But it is a responsibility we embrace with pride and optimism, thanks especially to the loyalty of our donors.
Thank you all for your generosity. Thank you for helping make opera a living, relevant, and essential art.
