The Artists

Emily Jarrell Urbanek has been Opera Carolina’s Director of Music Preparation for 15 seasons, serving as chief coach, pianist and chorus director. During the 2019/20 season, she conducted a joint production of Derrick Wang’s Scalia/Ginsburg for Opera Carolina and Opera Grand Rapids. Also an extra keyboardist with the Charlotte Symphony, Emily frequently performs chamber music with area musicians and has participated in premieres of new works by Kevin Krumenauer, David Noon, John Allemeier, Sean Neukom and Mary Armistead-Jones. She has performed works with Charlotte’s renowned Bechtler Ensemble such as Franz Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet and Fanny Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio Emily Jarrell Urbanek Conductor Op. 11. In 2021 she performed Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81, with the principal strings of the Charlotte Symphony in a collaboration with the Charlotte Ballet entitled Ibsen’s House. Since 2007 Emily has been on the music staff of the Chautauqua Opera as pianist and as orchestral keyboardist for such contemporary works as John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles, Philip Glass’s Hydrogen Jukebox, Laura Kaminsky’s As One, and Derrick Wang’s Scalia/ Ginsburg. Emily has served as repetiteur for New York City Opera, San Diego Opera, Austin Opera, Fort Worth Opera Festival, New Orleans Opera, Kentucky Opera, and the former Opera Cleveland.

Soprano Melinda Whittington joined the roster of the Metropolitan Opera for its productions of Macbeth and Philip Glass’ Akhnaten, and the roster of the Lyric Opera Chicago for its production of Eugene Onegin. Among the soprano’s other recent performances are debuts with Arizona Opera as Donna Anna and a return for the title role of Rusalka, Utah Opera for Donna Anna, Ash Lawn Opera as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, and North Carolina Opera as Ada in Higdon’s Cold Mountain. She has sung the title role of Arabella with Pittsburgh Festival Opera; Juliette in Roméo Melinda Whittington et Juliette with Opera Birmingham and Pensacola Opera; Micaëla A Soldier in Carmen with Greensboro Opera; Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni with Green Mountain Opera; Tatyana in Eugene Onegin, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, and Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte with Opera Carolina. She sang Micaëla in Carmen and Marie Antoinette in Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles with Wolf Trap Opera and subsequently returned to Wolf Trap for a birthday concert honoring the composer. Ms. Whittington is a former Resident Artist of the Academy of Vocal Arts, at which she sang Marguerite in Faust and Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte. She was the 2015 first place winner of the Opera Birmingham competition, 2016 third place winner in Fort Worth Opera’s McCammon Voice Competition, a 2013 semi-finalist of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, winner of the Charlotte Opera Guild Competition, and an encouragement award winner in the Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition. She is a former participant in the prestigious Merola Opera Program in association with San Francisco Opera at which she performed scenes as the title role in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, Barber’s Vanessa, and Bizet’s Le jolie fille de Perth.

Audrey Babcock Toledo

Dr. Samuel Mungo has been involved in opera as singer, director and producer for more than 30 years. He recently collaborated with conductor Marin Alsop on a critically acclaimed production of Bernstein’s Mass, with more than 540 participants. Other recent operas include L’elisir d’amore for Peabody Opera and the World Premiere of Kirke Mechem’s Pride and Prejudice, which won “Best of Baltimore”. Committed to fostering new, socially conscious opera, he has led Errolyn Wallen’s ANON, Béla Pintér’s A Bajnok, and Laura Kaminsky’s As One. Professional directing credits include Die Entführung aus dem Serail for Florida Grand Opera, Il trovatore for San Antonio Opera, and Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi for Stara Zagora and Plovdiv Operas, respectively. Honors include “Classical Performance of the Year” for his staging of Verdi’s Rigoletto in San Antonio, twice “Opera Production of the Year” from the National Opera Association, and the Silver Medal in the Charles Nelson Reilly Prize for Opera Direction from The American Prize. Recognized as an expert in actor training for the young singer, Dr. Mungo has lectured and presented at universities and national conferences across the country, including the National Opera Association, Hunter College, University of Maryland, UMKC Conservatory, University of Georgia, and Classical Singer Convention.

Audrey Babcock is an award-winning mezzo-soprano who is quickly gaining notoriety for her commanding, powerful performances as Carmen and her dark, hypnotic portrayals of Maddalena in Rigoletto. As Carmen, Ms. Babcock made her French debut with the Festival Lyrique-en-Mer and has performed the role with Florentine Opera, Nashville Opera, Florida Grand Opera, New York City Opera, San Antonio Opera, Knoxville Opera, Opera Delaware, Toledo Opera, Anchorage Opera, and Utah Festival Opera. Widely recognized as a choice singer for new works, Ms. Babcock has premiered several new operas including Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin, With Blood, With Ink, La Reina, The Poe Project, and has appeared as Mother in Winter’s Tale with Beth Morrison’s Prototype Festival in NYC in 2015. Other performances include Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni with New Orleans Opera, Aldonza in The Man of La Mancha with Utah Opera, Maddalena in Rigoletto with Palm Beach Opera, Carmen with Dayton Opera and Fort Worth Opera, Mrs. Mister in Blitzstein’s The Cradle Will Rock with Opera Saratoga, The Verdi Requiem with the Dayton Symphony, the Secretary in The Consul with Long Beach Opera and Chicago Opera Theater, the title role in Maria de Buenos Aires with San Diego Opera, Baba/Madame Flora in The Medium as well as the Mother in Hansel and Gretel with Victory Hall Opera.

Recording under the name Aviva, Ms. Babcock has released an album of Ladino pieces called Songs for Carmen, a collection of works sung in the Judeo-Spanish language Ladino and Arabic, inspired by the character Carmen. Ms. Babcock is currently an Assistant Professor of Voice at UNC Charlotte

Tenor Dominic Armstrong holds degrees from Truman State University, The Juilliard School, and The Curtis Institute. Mr. Armstrong’s 2021/22 season includes a variety of new roles and engagements including the debut role of Orville Wright in the world premiere of Finding Wright with Dayton Opera. On the concert stage, he joins the Amarillo Symphony for the Mozart Requiem and the Indianapolis Symphony for Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Last season, Mr. Armstrong’s engagements included Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, and the Mozart Requiem with the Amarillo Symphony.

The 2019/20 season began with performances with Kentucky Opera as Don José in Carmen, followed by a production of The Turn of the Screw with OnSite Opera. Mr. Armstrong’s awards include a Grand Finalists in the 2008 MET Competition, the 2013 George London Foundation Winner, The Sullivan Awards, the Lucrezia Bori Grant, Opera Index, the Gerda Lissner Award, the 2009 winner of the Liederkranz Art Song Competition. Mr. Armstrong’s 2011/12 season also included his Memphis Opera debut as Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus and a return to Lorin Maazel’s Castleton Festival to cover Don José and perform Remendado in Carmen. He has performed with Opera Company of Philadelphia, New York City Opera, Chicago Opera Theatre, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera Regio Torino, the Wexford Festival Opera, and Wolf Trap Opera.

Bass-baritone Peter Morgan’s signature roles include Leporello in Don Giovanni, Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, and Colline in La bohéme. Mr. Morgan has established himself as an interpreter of new music, with several regional and world premieres to his name including Jason and the Argonauts by Gregory Spears with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Scorpions’ Sting by Dean Burry also with The Lyric Opera of Chicago, Songbird by James Lowe and Kelly Rourke with The Glimmerglass Festival, as well as the recent landmark production of John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles with L’Opéra Royal de Versailles which is available to stream on MediciTV. He recently debuted with Arizona Opera in their filmed world premiere of The Copper Queen by Clint Borzoni & John de los Santos. He returned to The Glimmerglass Festival singing the role of Ferrando in Il trovatore, and Don Pedro in Songbird, a world premiere reimagining of Offenbach’s La Perichole set in 1920’s New Orleans with Jazz orchestration. Pre-covid, Peter performed with Opera Carolina as Colline in La bohéme and then reprised the same role with Toledo Opera. He also performed Publio in The Shepherd School of Music’s production of La clemenza di Tito. Peter Morgan has had the pleasure of performing with such companies as The Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Glimmerglass Festival, Michigan Opera Theatre, L’Opéra Royal de Versailles, Arizona Opera, Opera San Jose, Sarasota Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, St. Petersburg Opera, Toledo Opera, Opera Grand Rapids, and The Ohio Light Opera.

Baritone Kenneth Overton is a 2020 GRAMMY AWARD WINNER for “Best Choral Performance” for the title role of Richard Danielpour’s The Passion of Yeshua with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by JoAnn Falletta. Engagements for Kenneth include his Metropolitan Opera debut in Porgy and Bess, a reprisal of the role of Ralph Abernathy in I Dream he created for Opera Carolina, and Germont in La traviata for Fort Worth Opera. He also appears with the National Philharmonic as a soloist in the Mozart Requiem as well as Hailstork’s A Knee on the Neck, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Canton Symphony, Nathaniel Dett’s The Ordering of Moses with the Harlem Chamber Players, Handel’s Messiah with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, a solo recital at The Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University, and will debut Damien Geter’s An African American Requiem with the Oregon Symphony with subsequent performances at the Kennedy Center followed by a commercial recording release.

This past season he appeared in On Site Opera’s The Road We Came, an immersive and site-specific experience that explores the composers, musicians and places that define the rich Black history of New York City through a series of self-guided, musical walking tours. He also performed in “A Night of Black Excellence” concert with Fort Worth Opera, and Nadia Boulanger and Her World with the Bard Music Festival. Pride and tradition portray the motif of Kenneth’s debut solo album Been In De Storm So Long: Songs My Fathers Taught Me, his homage to the spiritual tradition that has been formative in his artistic life.

Soprano Alicia Russell has been singing throughout the United States since 2013, making her debut performance in her hometown with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. This season, Ms. Russell makes her Charlotte Symphony debut as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and with Cincinnati Opera as Morgan/Fierce. Her recent credits include Musetta in La bohème, Frasquita in Carmen, Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Savitri in Savitri, Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte. Ms. Russell was scheduled to debut in 2020 with Chicago Lyric Unlimited in Blue (rescheduled due to COVID-19). On the concert stage, Ms. Russell performed as the soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah with Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Highland Park Symphony Orchestra, Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra, and as recitalist with various national organizations. Alicia is a four time award winner of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in South Carolina (2022), Georgia (2021), North Carolina (2020), and Tennessee (2019). She holds a Master of Music from Northwestern University and Bachelor of Music from Furman University.

Opera Carolina’s Director of Production and Lighting Designer since 2005, Michael Baumgarten has designed lighting for more than 400 opera productions at regional and international opera companies, including, New York City Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Opera Lyra Ottawa, Manitoba Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Austin Opera, Arizona Opera, Lyric Opera Kansas City, Palm Beach Opera, Toledo Opera, Opera Grand Rapids, Michigan Opera Theater and Virginia Opera. A graduate of the Yale School of Drama and member of United Scenic Artists-Local 829, Mr. Baumgarten has also served as Director of Production and Resident Lighting Designer for Chautauqua Opera since 1999.

Equally at home with digital design and innovative technologies, he has designed and created new digital imagery for over fifteen Opera Carolina productions including Turandot, Les pêcheurs de perles, Nabucco, Macbeth, Roméo et Juliette, La fanciulla del West, and I Dream.

Soprano Julia Rose Woodward made her solo debut with the Western Piedmont Symphony in their Holiday Pops concert in December 2021. Previously, she performed as cover artist for the roles of Musetta in Puccini’s La bohéme, and Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen, and performed Despina in Davie’s The Three Little Pigs, Zweite Dame in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Maguelonne in Viardot’s Cendrillon, The Maid in Menotti’s Amelia al ballo, Street Singer in Bernstein’s Mass, and Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Ms. Woodward attended Charleston County School of the Arts and the Brevard Music Center’s highschool training division in her formative years. She holds her M.M. from the University of South Carolina and her B.M. from Furman University. Julia is a regular artist with Opera Carolina.

She resides in Charlotte, NC and is a student of Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Victoria Livengood.

Lauren Nicole Russell is a mezzo-soprano on the rise, from Asheville, North Carolina. She is a 2018 graduate of Wingate University, earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Performance with a concentration in Vocal Music. Ms. Russell has performed leading roles in Help, Help, The Globolinks!, Die Zauberflöte, The Falling and Rising, Dido and Aeneas, and Hansel and Gretel, supporting roles in H.M.S. Pinafore, and various opera scenes performed by Wingate Opera under the direction of Jessie Wright-Martin.

Ms. Russell has been a featured mezzo-soprano soloist in Wingate University’s Singers master works of Bach’s Mass in b minor and St. John Passion, and Mozart’s Coronation Mass. She has performed as Alto Soloist in Craig Hella Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shephard and Handel’s Messiah with the WinstonSalem Symphony. In 2020, Ms. Russell debuted the new musical, Robert Smalls, playing the pivotal role of Robert’s mother.

Audiences have also seen Ms. Russell in Midday Music at Myers Park United Methodist Church.

Ramelle Brooks Doctor 6

Bass-baritone Ramelle Brooks holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in Performance from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and is a Music Education (Voice K-12 specialization) graduate of Fayetteville State University.

He served as the choral director at West Hoke Middle School in Raeford, North Carolina, later moving to the Ezekiel Ezra Smith High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he served in the same role prior to answering the call of higher education.

Supplementing his academic experience, he serves as Director of Music at Second Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Ramelle is married to the former Jasmine Fort and is the father of Joel and Melody Brooks.

Ramelle has sung leading and supporting roles in several operas and musicals including La Cambiale di matrimonio, La finta giardiniera, Smokey Joe’s Café, H.M.S. Pinafore, Porgy and Bess, L’elisir d’amore, The Gospel According to Les Misérables, The Carousel, and Moses: How She Lead Her People to Freedom. He holds membership in The National Association of Teachers of Singing, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

About the Composer Zach Redler is a music theater composer whose work has been performed in concert halls, opera houses and theaters around the world. In 2014, the American Theatre Wing awarded Zach and Sara Cooper the Jonathan Larson Grant for their work together (The Memory Show, Loving Leo, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, and WINDOWS).

Other favorite theater compositions include: Movin’ Up In The World (Jerre Dye), A Song for Susan Smith (Mark Campbell), Emily Sutton (Jerre Dye) , and, their American Prize award winning piece, The Falling and The Rising (libretto by Jerre Dye). Currently, Zach is working on a number of projects across various genres from children’s music and jazz to opera and musical theater. Zach spent ten years as a music copyist and musicologist working with orchestras and Broadway shows in and out of town. Additionally, Zach teaches at NYU Tisch’s Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program, Manhattan School of Music, and Molloy College; is developing a coop based production company with fellow writers and actors (Midnight Oil Collective); mentors young opera writers for Seattle Opera’s creation lab; teaches private music, yoga, and meditation; loves cooking plant based meals for their family; and runs ultramarathons when time allows. Love to their wife Brittney and two children, Skylar and Ellis.

Jerre Dye is a Chicago-based playwright, opera librettist, director and actor. He has spent the last three decades focusing primarily on the development of new works for both theatre and opera. He is especially dedicated to innovative collaborations and community-based projects. Dye is the recipient of the Award for Dramatic Literature from the Fellowship of Southern Writers.

In addition to his work on The Falling and the Rising with longtime collaborator Zach Redler, other opera highlights include an upcoming commission for Opera Philadelphia with Pulitzer Prize and two-time Grammy Award winning composer Jennifer Higdon, Taking Up Serpents for Washington National Opera with composer Kamala Sankaram, The Transformation of Jane Doe for Chicago Opera Theatre with composer Stacy Garrop, Pretty Little Room for Opera Memphis with composer Robert Patterson, Opera 901 for Opera Memphis with composers Kamala Sankaram, Sam Shoup, Zach Redler, and Robert G. Patterson, and Parksville a filmed, episodic, virtual reality opera for Opera On Tap/New York with composer Kamala Sankaram. In 2014, Dye completed the libretto for Ghosts of Crosstown, a new short opera cycle in collaboration with Opera Memphis: Movin’ Up in the World Zachary Redler (subsequent performances at the National Civil Rights Museum and Missouri State University), Abandoned with composer Kamran Ince, Ivonne with composer Nathaniel Stookey, and Mitch and the Moon with composer Jack Perla. His play, Cicada, had a Chicago premiere in 2014 with Route 66 Theatre Company (Jeff nominated). His play Distance, premiered in 2016 with Strawdog Theatre Company (Jeff nominated). Other works for the stage include: Short/Stories, Threads, The New Adventures of Hansel and Gretel, Wild Swans, Live Studio Audience, and an adaptation of Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale with Iris Orchestra. He is currently developing a new musical, Self Storage, with Zach Redler.

The Falling and the Rising Synopsis Zach Redler’s and Jerry Dye’s new opera celebrates the men and women of our United States Military. The Story is based upon a series of interviews with wounded warriors, active duty soldiers, and veterans.

The Falling and the Rising tells the story of a Soldier, posted in a conflict overseas, whose world is forever changed after an improvised explosive device explodes shortly after she sends a video message home for her daughter’s thirteenth birthday. The military doctors induce a coma to save her life. In her quasi-dream state, the Soldier envisions another combat veteran during a mandatory therapy session Unable to communicate, the Soldier experiences, but is unable to discuss, the doctor’s update on her condition: A traumatic brain injury.

An Army Ranger, with whom the Soldier can interact, helps bring her back to Walter Reed while reminder the Soldier of the strength and resilience she embodies. Expecting to return home, the Soldier is surprised to find herself with a Colonel, who is mourning the loss of his wife. Next, she meets and takes solace from a Homecoming Soldier, who demonstrates his own recovery to his family’s congregation.

Finally, surrounded by her company near and far, the Soldier wakes up from her coma and finds the strength she needs to return to her young daughter. ***** Throughout the script, the phrase “We Fall and We Rise” occurs several times. It is symbolic of the struggle our soldiers endure, sometimes falling, but always rising to meet a new challenge. The performing company is joined for this Final Chorus by veterans of various services, who live in our community.
