SYNOPSIS Setting: On a spring day in 1914 before the “Last Great Summer.”

Act 1 Count Almaviva arrives in Seville to serenade Rosina, a ward of Don Bartolo. He pretends to be a poor commoner named Lindoro in order to see if Rosina’s love is true. She responds, but remains locked inside, as Bartolo intends to marry her himself. Almaviva meets his friend Figaro, a cunning barber, and the two hatch a plan to have Almaviva pose as a drunk soldier billeting in Bartolo’s house in order to get access to Rosina. Rosina reflects on the voice of Lindoro which has enchanted her, and Bartolo reflects on the rumour, delivered by music teacher Don Basilio, that Almaviva is in town searching for Rosina. Basilio suggests a slanderous course of action, but Bartolo decides to simply move forward his plans to marry Rosina. Figaro overhears this plot and resolves to get a letter from Almaviva to Rosina. Almaviva arrives posing as a drunk solider and begins to fight with Bartolo. Rosina, Basilio and Figaro arrive on the scene, then soldiers burst into Bartolo’s house to investigate, and they move to arrest Almaviva. He quietly reveals his identity to the officer, who immediately lets him free. Everybody is stunned except for Figaro.

- INTERMISSION Act 2 Almaviva returns, this time disguised as Don Alonso, a music teacher arriving in the place of Basilio, who he says is ill. Bartolo is suspicious, but Almaviva suggests that he use Rosina’s own love letter as ammunition against Lindoro, implying that he say it was given to him by another mistress, showing Lindoro’s intention is to toy with her on Almaviva’s behalf. This convinces Bartolo, and the singing lesson begins, Rosina surprised to see “Lindoro” as “Don Alonso.” The two declare their love while Bartolo dozes off. Basilio arrives suddenly and Almaviva improvises a plan to convince him he is sick, while bribing him to leave quickly. Bartolo gets a shave but manages to overhear Almaviva and Rosina talking of eloping that evening, and chases him out of the house. Bartolo asks Basilio to summon a notary for a wedding that evening. During a furious rainstorm, Bartolo gives the letter to Rosina, who is crushed at the notion that Lindoro’s intentions are insincere. Figaro and Almaviva climb the balcony and enter using a key Figaro stole during the chaos earlier. Rosina confronts Lindoro about the letter, who reveals himself as Almaviva. Bartolo removes the ladder, blocking their escape, but then the notary and Basilio arrive. Basilio is once again bribed into signing the marriage contract for Almaviva and Rosina. Bartolo arrives with guards, but he is too late. There is reconciliation and laughter as the plots of the day unfold around Bartolo.
