Dear Friends OF Open Window School, The role of the Board of Trustees in an independent school is often described as holding the school in trust for future generations.

Working behind the scenes, the Board establishes the long-term foundation for the school’s educators to do their jobs under the direction of the Board’s only employee, the Head of School.

Much of the Board’s work is, appropriately, out of sight as it does not impact the day to day operation of the school. Out of sight doesn’t mean unimportant.

Over the past year, the Open Window School Board has put forth incredible effort toward securing the future excellence of our school. This work began in 2018 when I shared with the Board leadership my intention to retire at the conclusion of the 2020 school year. The timing was right, both for me personally and for the school. In the 2018-19 school year, we would conclude the eight-year NWAIS reaccreditation process. Reaccreditation would lead into the formulation of new strategic plan, which would set priorities for the coming years and help establish

criteria to determine the skills and experiences desired in our next Head of School. The Board was facing transitions of its own, as Board President Cydnie Horwat was concluding her three-year term of office.

Through careful planning and hard work, the Board conducted impressive work on behalf of our school community. Chad Fletcher was selected to be the next Board President and lead the Head of School search. The school had the luxury of conducting an early search in the spring of 2019 and attracted an impressive field of candidates.

In June, Elaine Christensen was named to become Head of School when I step down after this school year. Elaine is currently the Middle School Director and Director of Professional Development at Lakeside School in Seattle. Jeff Derstadt was tabbed to be the next Board Vice President and lead the strategic planning process. This new strategic plan commits Open Window to becoming a nationally recognized leader in gifted education; continuing to attract, retain, and grow talented staff; deepening our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion; strengthening our financial future; and evolving our campus to better serve our growing community and 21st Century program.

The first step in evolving our campus has already had a huge impact. Thanks to the generous support of our community at the Auction, we are in the process of expanding our west parking lot. When completed, we will have 25% more parking

and have updated water management systems that will support future campus construction.

While these measures lay the foundation for future decades of success, so much excitement is in store for this coming school year.

In line with our commitment to graduate students who are empathetic, innovative problem solvers and passionate, purposeful global citizens, we are setting out clear community expectations that Bobcats are kind, inclusive, respectful, and responsible. These guiding virtues that apply to every member of our community will underlie everything we do.

This fall will also highlight our commitment to authenticity, as we challenge, support, and trust students to do real work that matters and has an impact beyond the classroom. Fourth through eighth grade students will get to work in collaborative teams to design an Open Window School experiment that will be conducted on the International Space Station. Our eighth graders

participated in this program when they were in fourth grade and we are excited about the leadership opportunities this will provide them. Students in the younger grades are not being left out. They will be designing experiments to fly on the sixth grade high altitude balloons this spring.

We are so fortunate to have amazing, dedicated educators and the resources to inspire and nurture our students. None of this is possible without the generosity of our entire community. On behalf of 348 bright, eager to learn children, I thank all of you for your support.

In my role as Director of Diversity and Inclusion, I deeply appreciate Open Window School’s approach to diversity as something that is important to us all.

In my role as Director of Diversity and Inclusion, I deeply appreciate Open Window School’s approach to diversity as something that is important to us all. The belief that differences should be approached with interest rather than fear is very close to my heart. My parents were one of the first few Indian families to emigrate from India to the southern part of the US in the early 1960s. Growing up, my five sisters and I would hear from our parents heartbreaking stories of what they went through being the minority, something that was very new to them. I was born in Columbia, South Carolina and grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. Throughout school, I was, at times, the only person of color in the classroom, and I can still remember that feeling of isolation. This same isolation continued even when my career took off after college in the computer science field as a programmer. For years, I was the only female on my team, and many times the only person of color. Because of my own personal experiences, I’ve become very passionate about making sure everyone feels welcomed, included, and respected.

Why the focus of diversity, equity, and inclusion you might ask? Diversity in independent schools is an investment to prepare students to be able to compete in a global environment. Studies show that organizations do much better when there is a diverse culture. Bringing together different personalities, beliefs, and experiences can help foster creativity and offer a range of perspectives and ideas. Why not begin this with our student body? In doing this, we help mold our students to become empathetic, innovative problem solvers, passionate and purposeful global citizens, which is our aspirational Portrait of an Open Window Graduate.

In 2018, Open Window School successfully completed the NWAIS re-accreditation process. In the Commitment to Care: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion section, the accreditation report recommended that the school develop a unified diversity plan, which includes clear goals, strategies, and criteria for evaluation of success. The first step into this plan was to access the current climate of the entire community. For this, we had the community take the NAIS Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism (AIM) Survey. The survey indicated two areas of High Concern:

The school’s ability to work effectively with the individual differences of various stakeholder groups based on socioeconomic status.

There were many responses that fell into the healthy range and four of these responses scored higher than the highest performing schools who took the AIM Survey nationwide:

Investing in our future, Open Window School’s Strategic Plan 2019-2024 will deepen our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by developing this unified diversity plan as well as reviewing the current curriculum to ensure that multiculturism is integrated into various aspects of the school day. We have several ways of accomplishing this starting this fall.

We will have a newly formed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee at the Board level. I will guide this committee along with a trustee.

This committee will serve to support the school’s diversity commitment through the sharing of information, support of programs and initiatives, and recommendation of policy.

There will be a Faculty Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force that will meet throughout the year to review and revise curriculum to ensure that multiculturism is integrated in various aspects of the school day as well as to develop programs to increase cultural competency within our school community.

I will continue to offer our Diversity Roundtable to discuss topics relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as we continue to transform our community into an inclusive environment where all individuals are valued for their talents and empowered to reach their fullest potential. COMMUNITY BOOK READ AND GUEST SPEAKER IJEOMA OLUO We are excited to announce that this fall and winter, we will be offering a Community Book Read with two opportunities for candid conversations on Ijeoma Oluo’s book, So You Want To Talk About Race.

Ijeoma Oluo is a Seattle-based Writer, Speaker, and Internet Yeller. Her work on social issues such as race and gender has been published in The Guardian, The Stranger, Washington Post, ELLE Magazine, NBC News, and more. Her NYT bestselling first book, So You Want To Talk About Race, was released January 2018 with Seal Press. Ijeoma was named one of the Most Influential People in Seattle by Seattle Magazine, one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Seattle by Seattle Met, one of The Root’s 100 Most Influential Americans in 2017 & 2018, and is the recipient of the Feminist Humanist Award 2018 by the American Humanist Association, the Media Justice Award by the Gender Justice League, and the 2018 Aubrey Davis Visionary Leadership Award by the Equal Opportunity Institute.

S TUDENT DESIGNED EXPERIMENT WILL

TO THE ISS Students will be looking towards the stars as they develop proposals for microgravity experiments to be conducted by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS).

One student-designed experiment will be among 33 selected from Brazil, Canada, and the United States to fly on Mission 14 to the ISS in spring/summer of 2020 as part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP). SSEP is undertaken by the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE) in partnership with DreamUp PBC and NanoRacks, LLC. This year’s eighth graders participated in the SSEP program as fourth graders in 2016. They will join their fourth through seventh grade peers: engaging in a variety of microgravity learning experiences; designing research proposals for microgravity experiments in diverse fields such as seed germination, crystal growth, physiology and life cycles of microorganisms, cell biology and growth, food studies, and studies of micro-aquatic life; and submitting these proposals for review by experts in the field.

Once teams submit their formal research proposals, a review team of master STEM educators and local researchers will convene in November to select the top three proposals.

These proposals will be submitted to the National Step 2 Review Board, which will select the final experiment for a spring/summer 2020 spaceflight. Each experiment must be designed to work within the constraints of a Fluids Mixing Enclosure (FME) research mini-laboratory and pass a NASA Flight Safety Review.

In parallel to the fourth through eighth grade ISS research proposals, kindergarten through third grade students will be

designing science experiments, one of which will be selected to fly to near-space on the sixth grade high altitude balloon in spring 2020.

In addition to the microgravity experiment, Open Window School will send two official mission patches designed by kindergarten through eighth grade students to fly aboard the ISS. Participation in this esteemed program is an example of Open Window’s core value of authenticity, a commitment to challenging, supporting, and trusting students to do real work that matters and has an impact beyond the classroom. Students will visit northwest science and aerospace museums, observatories, and planetariums as well as partner with adult professionals in various scientific and aeronautic fields. In addition, students are gaining critical written communications skills as they engage in an authentic two-step science proposal review process.

Head of School, Jeff Stroebel, believes that SSEP offers a unique opportunity for Open Window school students: “Participation in SSEP offers our students an experience that they will remember the rest of their lives. Far more than learning science, they will have the opportunity to be scientists, conducting an experiment structured identically to the work of the world’s leading researchers.”

The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program [or SSEP] is a program of the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE) in the U.S. and the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Space Education internationally. It is enabled through a strategic partnership with DreamUp PBC and NanoRacks LLC, which are working with NASA under a Space Act Agreement as part of the utilization of the International Space Station as a National Laboratory.

Bobcat Days Spring is the perfect time to invite special friends, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and swim coaches to our Cougar Mountain campus for Bobcat Days.

This tradition includes two fun-filled days with the following events: Lower School Grandparent and Special Friend Day, STEM Day, Middle School Grandparent and Special Friend Day, the Lower School Celebration, and the Spring Arts Fair. While our campus is vibrantly adorned with visual art during the Spring Arts Fair, it is also an opportunity to show off a variety of performance art shows and concerts, and to contribute to a giant art installation such as this year’s work−an oversized weaving project with hula hoops and torn t-shirts.

Scores of Open Window School alumni visited campus on June 18 to mark yet another ending to another great school year. With our newest graduates, who received their diploma less than a week before, to recent college graduates, the group shared stories with friends and former teachers.

“I love this event,” said Head of Middle School Mike Montgomery.

“It’s so great to see all the kids and where they’re going.”

Their destinations are vast. The new graduates are a talented group that will go to these high schools this fall: The Bush School, Eastside Catholic, Eastside Preparatory, The Hill School (PA), Holy Names Academy, Issaquah High School, Lakeside, Liberty High School, Newport High School, Overlake, Philips Exeter (NH), Redmond High School, Seattle Academy, Seattle Preparatory, and University Prep.

The Open Window School Auction notched another series of successes in the 2018-2019 school year, with the integration of new auction technology and unique experiences for our families.

Auction chairs Stacie Smith Cichos and Amy Sullivan spearheaded the live and two online Auctions to fundraise and friend raise for the improvement of our school. They, plus the Development Department lead by Director of Development Molly Rubin, implemented a new auction website that prompted fierce bidding competition in our holiday and spring online auctions because of real-time text alerts each time one was outbid.

The big event, the Mad Hatter Gala, raised a record amount, especially with our Fund-AWish initiative. Unique experiences such as a kickball game with middle school teachers, gingerbread house decoration with teachers, and a LEGO building class with a world renowned master builder, prompted more involvement in our auctions than ever before.

“My favorite was the LEGO. We got to build ducks and make a mascot for Open Window,” said one very satisfied second grader.

FUND-A-WISH Last spring, Open Window families raised their paddles generously to ensure that everyone who wants to attend our community events will be able to find a place to park. By raising nearly $250,000, they made a significant contribution toward an expansive renovation of the west parking lot.

The four-month project started immediately after graduation in June. The existing lot had to be expanded on both sides, so two upper rock retaining walls were removed, and a new soldier pile wall was installed just below the playing field.

On the street side, a three hundred and twenty foot-long, ninety-six-inch diameter corrugated metal pipe was installed to collect and gradually disperse water draining from higher on the mountain. This extensive water management system, including two new water quality vaults and five new catch basins, is a key long-term benefit of the project as it will provide the infrastructure for campus expansion in the future. We are appreciative of the leadership of this project by CFO Marja Ziuzin and the guidance of Trustee Michael Crowson.

The previous Strategic Plan guided Open Window School from 2013-2019. During that period, we have advanced and broadened our program, focusing on the core values of love of learning, authenticity, social and emotional learning, and enhancing our commitment to the arts; grown enrollment and developed a thriving middle school; adopted a diversity commitment; deepened our endowments; upgraded key facilities; formulated a campus master plan; and increased affordability and access through revisions to financial aid policies, transportation, and overnight trips.

Open Window is on solid footing. Our school has full enrollment, strong governance, solid finances, a culture of community, collaboration, and innovation, and most significantly, produces impressive graduates. It is no surprise that Open Window has become a first-choice school for Eastside families. To ensure lasting success, Open Window is dedicated to continual improvement. Going forward, we will continue to build on our core values, deepen our commitment to diversity, and ensure that facilities support our commitment to innovation and excellence. Meet Elaine Christensen

NEXT HEAD OF OPEN WINDOW SCHOOL On June 19, 2019, the Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Elaine Christensen as the next Head of Open Window School, effective July 1, 2020 upon Jeff Stroebel’s retirement. She now serves as the Middle School Director and Director of Professional Development at Lakeside School in Seattle. The Board selected Elaine from a field of strong candidates, citing the depth of her experience in independent schools and her track record of success as a school leader. We spoke with Elaine to learn a little more about her. Here are her answers:

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MARKED CHARACTERISTIC?

With listening, I have the capacity to be 100% present with whoever I’m talking to, whether it’s a student who can’t find his homework, a teacher trying to figure out how to update their curriculum, a parent/guardian struggling with how their student uses technology, or any of the other things that come up in schools every day. My calmness helps me stay steady, even when things get intense or frenetic. I also tend to be a glass-half-full person; I see the best in people and I see opportunity when faced with a challenge.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT STATE OF MIND?

Transitional. I am 100% in at my current school this year and, at the same time, I’m thinking all the time about Open Window, looking forward to starting school next year with a new community and a new team. I can’t wait to get started.

WHEN AND WHERE WERE YOU HAPPIEST?

It’s hard to pin down a particular event, but an activity that’s really important to me Elaine and her rowing team is rowing. I am a member of a nationally competitive rowing team that practices three early mornings a week. To many people, this sounds insane. To me, it’s grounding. The exercise, the

camaraderie, the team, the sense of shared purpose as we prepare for a race, and the experience of being out on the water as the sun rises. There’s nothing like it.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?

This is not really an achievement, but I’m proud of and grateful for my family every single day. My husband, Erik, is my greatest friend, strongest supporter, biggest fan. My daughters, Julia and Emily, are creative, courageous, ethical, smart, and ambitious in their own unique ways. They are also good friends, which is wonderful. I can’t wait to see who they become. My home is happy, full of love.

WHAT IS THE QUALITY YOU MOST LIKE IN A PERSON?

I can’t come up with just one. When I think of the people I truly admire and love to spend time with, these are the through-lines: authenticity, curiosity, honesty, sense of humor.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?

I have a sign on the wall in my office that says “Decisions are easy when values are clear.” When there’s a tough decision to make at school, I ask myself which option aligns with the mission and which one best serves the students in our care.
