Dear Families,
Welcome to Open Window Summer. I’m so excited to partner with you and your camper for a season filled with joy, exploration, and connection. Whether this is your first summer with us or you’re returning for another year, we are grateful to have your family as part of our summer community.
I believe that when children feel welcomed, wanted, and heard, they thrive. All summer long, campers are encouraged to follow their curiosity, try new things, form meaningful friendships, and discover their unique strengths. Our goal is to combine the joy of a traditional camp experience with hands-on, creative learning that builds confidence and sparks imagination.
From Adventure Camp to Innovations Camp, Adventure Explorers to our Leaders-in-Training program, each experience is designed to include a balance of structured activities, meaningful challenges, and plenty of time to play, move, and create. Alongside an incredible team of educators, specialists, counselors, and leaders, I’m committed to creating an environment where every camper feels celebrated, supported, and excited to show up each day.
This Summer Offerings Guide is meant to support you as you plan your child’s summer experience. Inside, you’ll find detailed information about our camps and classes, guidance on which programs may be the best fit for different ages and interests, answers to frequently asked questions, and an overview of new program elements including lunch and transportation. We hope this guide gives you a clear picture of what summer at OWS looks like and helps you feel confident in your decisions
If you have any questions, my inbox is always open. I’m happy to help and love talking summer.
Thank you for sharing part of your family’s summer with us. We can’t wait to see the growth and memories your campers create this year.
With summer smiles,
Ms. Chanel

Hi! I’m Chanel, and I’m so excited to spend the summer at Open Window as the Summer Programs Manager. You’ll usually find me right in the middle of the fun, leading Shenanigan City, hyping up camp moments, jumping into karaoke singalongs, or teaching one of my favorite repeat-after-me songs.
I love creating a camp experience where campers feel comfortable being themselves, trying new things, and having a whole lot of fun along the way. Summer at OWS is all about connection, creativity, and confidence, and I care deeply about making sure every camper feels welcomed, supported, and excited to show up each day.
I can’t wait to laugh, sing, and make memories with our campers and staff all summer long
Hello all! My name is Babu Chatterjee, and I’m so excited to be back for my ninth summer working at camp, my fourth summer with OWS, and my third summer as the LIT Program Manager. I keep coming back to OWS because its summer program truly feels like the best of both worlds It’s an incredible place to safely build leadership skills, while also being defined by bold, authentic fun
I’ve been passionate about creating camp magic for kids of all ages since I started working at camps just after my 16th birthday. Whether I’m solving riddles, enjoying a blue popsicle (clearly the best flavor), or helping teenagers learn how to write a resume, I believe camp should be fun, meaningful, and memorable.
This summer, I hope my LITs build confidence and discover just how powerful and rewarding it can be to make a younger camper’s day, week, or even entire summer

Hi! I’m Shoopie Panholzer, and I’m so excited to be returning for my second summer as an Assistant Summer Programs Manager. I’ve been working in camps every summer since 2017 because I love how learning, fun, and growth come together to create a truly magical camp experience.
My love for camp led me into full-time outdoor education in 2018 and eventually to earning a Master’s degree in Education with a focus on curriculum and instruction for outdoor and environmental education through IslandWood and the University of Washington (go Dawgs!) Summer is when I really come alive thanks to all the time spent outdoors. If I’m not frolicking in the forest or ankle-deep in a tide pool at the beach, you can usually find me in my garden reading or tending to my plants, often with friends and my dog nearby.

This summer, I’m especially excited to make new friends and help create a camp experience that is joyful, meaningful, and as fun as possible for both campers and staff. I can’t wait to be back at camp for another amazing summer.

Hi, I'm Ally Wallace! I am a Kindergarten Associate Teacher at OWS, and I am so excited to be one of your Assistant Managers this summer! This will be my fourth year working with the OWS Summer Program.
I love our summer program because it challenges students to grow in new and unexpected ways. I look and live for the "A-ha!" moments, where campers get just far enough outside of their comfort zones to build real skills in empathy and resilience. I value hands-on, interactive learning, and thrive in the silly, messy moments where play turns into something deeper.
As a leader, I am all about compassion, peace-making, and what I like to think of as cultivated chaos the kind that brings laughter, learning, and lasting memories. As Assistant Manager, I’m excited to help shape a camp culture that feels joyful, supportive, and full of moments that will live on long after summer ends.
In my outside-of-summer life, you might find me watching a movie with my cat (and dog!) on my lap, baking a big chocolate cake, or listening to music from before I was born. Ask me about my favorite book or my next dream travel destination!
Hello! I’m Ms. Kaur, and I’ve been a proud part of the Open Window School community for the past two years. I am so excited to step into the role of Kindergarten Lead this summer and cannot wait to meet all of our kindergarten campers!
I love working in our summer program because it gives children the freedom to learn, explore, and be themselves in a joyful and relaxed environment. Summer is a special time when curiosity takes the lead and learning feels natural and engaging. I bring lots of energy, joy, and care into everything I do, whether I’m guiding activities, sharing laughs, or moving along to music with students.
I am passionate about creating a safe, welcoming space where every camper feels supported and confident. This summer, I hope campers build confidence, try new experiences, and discover what makes them unique. Most of all, I want them to head home each day feeling proud, happy, and excited to return for another day of fun ☀

Hello all. My name is Dana Surman, and I’m thrilled to be joining the summer leadership team for Summer 2026. I was born and raised in Seattle, WA, and have spent many years leading and teaching children through summer camps. Throughout my experiences, I’ve loved working with kids in ways that celebrate creativity, lived experience, and authenticity
I’m so excited to help create a positive, welcoming space where campers can be curious, have fun, and enjoy a summer filled with inspiration and new ideas each day. I can’t wait to be part of a season full of growth, connection, and memorable moments.
Here’s to Summer 2026!
Hi There! I am thrilled to be joining camp this summer as the Adventure Explorer Lead! Born and raised in Seattle, I grew up exploring the state of Washington largely through summer camps and school trips
Through these experiences, I developed a love of adventure, curiosity for the world around me, and found confidence in my own leadership abilities. I am excited to create a space for campers this summer to explore their interests, curiosities, and discover new parts of themselves.
I am dedicated to building a camp community where every camper feels uplifted and celebrated. It is my hope that each week, campers leave with a new inspiration, interest, or curiosity they carry with them beyond camp!

Campers will start each day learning and playing some of the greatest chess games ever created, including Bughouse, Fischer Random, and Giveaway. Through play, campers will explore how chess works, practice creative thinking, and even invent their own chess-style games to share with classmates. We will wrap up the week with “Maneuvering Speed,” a fast-paced chess challenge played without checks or captures. This week is all about curiosity, confidence, and having fun discovering the ancient game of kings.
This class is perfect for campers who are brand new to chess or still building confidence with the basics. Campers will learn the names of all the pieces, how they move, how captures work, and how a chess game is played from start to finish. Lessons are taught through interactive games and playful challenges that make learning feel fun and accessible. By the end of the week, campers will feel comfortable setting up a board, playing a full game, and trying new strategies with confidence.
Beginner Plus is designed for campers who completed Beginner Chess in Week 2 or already have a solid understanding of piece movement and captures. Campers will learn the rules of tournament chess, including castling, promotion, and en passant, while also learning how to record and review their games. Instruction focuses on thoughtful play, reflection, and building strong habits as chess players. Campers will practice playing full games and begin thinking more intentionally about their decisions on the board.
This class is for campers who are confident in tournament rules and ready to deepen their strategic thinking. Campers will learn foundational chess tactics such as pins, skewers, discovered attacks, and double attacks. They will also explore classic chess openings including the Italian, Spanish, and Sicilian, studying them to a depth of six moves. This week emphasizes planning ahead, recognizing patterns, and developing early tournament-level strategies in a supportive learning environment

Advanced Chess is designed for experienced players who have completed Intermediate Chess either online or in person. Campers will engage in focused nd game analysis. The class will study one classic chess tems of choice, such as the Italian, Spanish, and Sicilian, s week is about refining skills, strengthening decisionnfidence for competitive tournament play.

Join Open Window School Drama teachers Ms. Wilson and Ms. Thompson in our summer musical, Honk Jr.!
An adaptation of the beloved fable The Ugly Duckling, Honk Jr. is about a bird named Ugly who looks a bit different from their duckling siblings. Ugly goes on an adventure of self-discovering while meeting unique characters along the way. In this camp every student will be cast in a role, rehearse the show, design the sets, and perform two shows on the final day of camp.

We kick off summer with a joyful explosion of color, connection, and camp spirit as each day highlights a new color tied to a core value: red for empathy, orange for inclusivity, yellow for joy, green for kindness, blue for respect, and purple for responsibility. Through hands-on art, team challenges, games, and reflection, campers explore what makes them unique while learning how every color and every camper belongs. From morning Shenanigan City skits to a high-energy Neon Dance Party, this week is filled with laughter, creativity, and shared moments that help build a strong, welcoming camp community.
Welcome to ShenanLand City, the creative heart of Buildtopia, where campers design, build, trade, and collaborate to bring an entire camp city to life. Inspired by cozy world-building games, campers take on meaningful roles such as artist, inventor, shopkeeper, gardener, or builder while earning Sparks, completing imaginative quests, and learning how teamwork and problem-solving turn ideas into reality. Leaders in Training serve as mentors throughout the week, and families are invited on Friday to explore the Village Showcase and see ShenanLand City come alive with creativity and camp pride.

Wild and Wacky Games is a splash-tastic week filled with laughter, movement, and playful challenges, designed to be joyful, energetic, and low-pressure. Campers participate in water games, creative team challenges, and learning-based activities while searching campus for hidden Challenge Cards that invite them to challenge other campers, counselors, groups, and even leadership members to fun and unexpected games. The week wraps up with a field-wide Water Games Celebration and classic Dunk Tank, and at its heart focuses on fun, connection, and laughter while modeling and practicing our camp values of kindness, inclusivity, respect, and responsibility.
Welcome to The Why Files, where curiosity takes center stage and campers become Junior Investigators exploring mysterious phenomena popping up around camp. Through hands-on experiments, observation, and creative thinking, campers focus on asking thoughtful questions, testing ideas, revising their work, and embracing surprising results and delightful failures. The week culminates in The Why Files Expo, where families are invited to explore camper-led experiments, wonder boards, and investigation stories that celebrate imagination, problem-solving, and a love of learning.
We close out summer with OWS-chella, a joyful festival of creativity, gratitude, and celebration where campers become artists, musicians, designers, and performers as they help bring the ultimate camp experience to life. Throughout the week, campers create decorations, prepare performances, and host interactive creative booths, leading up to a Friday Festival Showcase where families join us for a high-energy, heartfelt sendoff that honors everything our campers have created together.

Each week, Adventure Explorers campers (entering 5 -7 grade) focus on a key secondary learning skill while embarking on exciting field trips across the Puget Sound area. These experiences, filled with adventure and discovery, help build character and foster a sense of community among campers th th

WEEK 1: Creativity
Campers explore different creative outlets while practicing their leadership skills, harnessing their empathy, and practicing vulnerability. This first week of camp includes nature-based day trips, oncampus creations, a workshop at a letter press studio, and volunteering at a local animal shelter.
WEEK 2: Connection
WEEK 3: Communication
Workshops with local architecture groups and tours of some of the region’s coolest public spaces allow campers to think outside the box in dreaming up their own community spaces – asking the question “how does space facilitate connection?” Through a kayaking adventure on Lake Washington and various other adventures, campers partake in active team building and spend time reflecting on the spaces that have facilitated connection and community for them
Through field trips to local sporting events, teambuilding exercises, and silly challenges, campers practice and observe the importance of communication and teamwork. Whether navigating the rock walls at Camp Long or trying to throw a frisbee through an obstacle course, campers will harness their grit and problemsolving techniques, all while working together and supporting one another.

From hands-on discoveries at the Science Center to building our own terrariums and exploring coastal ecosystems through tide pooling, campers will practice asking questions and experimentation. Each field trip is designed to spark curiosity and lead students down winding paths of new learning and discovery.
Music, arts, and celebration come together to spark maximum joy for campers while building upon camp skills in collaboration, creativity, and communication. Through partnerships with local dance, music, and art groups, campers will create, practice, and play as they explore diverse musical and artistic mediums for self-expression and community connection.

All Innovation Camp classes are organized into six core pathways that reflect how campers explore, learn, and create.

Arts & Design Thinking: Creative exploration through visual arts, music, theater, architecture, fashion, and design challenges that blend imagination with problem-solving.
Logic, Language & Strategy: Activities that flex critical thinking, communication, and reasoning skills—debate, storytelling, world-building, coding languages, puzzles, and strategy-based games.

Technology & Engineering: Hands-on building, coding, robotics, maker projects, and engineering design challenges that put invention and iteration at the center.

Digital Media & Animation: Classes that bring ideas to life through film, graphic design, animation, photography, and emerging digital tools.

STEAM & Social Impact: Interdisciplinary projects that connect science, technology, engineering, art, and math with real-world problem solving, community building, and global citizenship.
Movement, Mind & Play: Classes that explore kinesthetic creativity—dance, sports strategy, yoga, improv, and game-making bridging the body and the brain.
