Remote working is the new normal for thousands of workers, but for digital workers this reality has already been the case for several decades.

Digital nomads are individuals who work online and travel round the world fulltime, a dream for many which has become reality with the announcement that thousands of companies like Facebook, Twitter, Outsystems and Talkdesk will be adopting remote working.

Given the freedom they enjoy, nomads tend to travel to the most beautiful places in the world, warm places with good weather, good food, outdoor activities and, above all, a good internet connection. With the pandemic, our society has progressively come to adopt remote work, a practice which had already been embraced for several years by digital nomads – individuals who work online and travel fulltime round the world.

Durante a pandemia o trabalho remoto tem ficado cada mais enraizado socialmente, prática que os nómadas digitais - indivíduos que trabalham online e viajam a tempo inteiro pelo mundo - abraçaram há já vários anos.

A Madeira tem as condições perfeitas para atrair nómadas digitais com a sua beleza natural,

There was a call for the development of an integrated strategy to attract this market to the archipelago so as to present Madeira as one of the world's prime locations for remote working. Hence the 'Digital Nomads Madeira Islands' Project.

The project developed through Startup Madeira by the Regional Secretariat for Economy will bring over digital nomads from all over the world to work in Madeira. Digital entrepreneurs and professionals from top businesses will be settling down on the island for anywhere between 1 to 6 months, living as locals in the island's communities.

Under this project, Ponta do Sol will serve as a pilot project that is unique in the world, the Digital Nomad Village. The village sports the perfect conditions for nomads who seek the sun and a quiet lifestyle, surrounded by nature, and will be the first nomad village in the world. The village's natural beauty, access to the sea, nature, and excellent internet coverage are among this beautiful town's calling cards to bring over digital nomads from around the globe.

A very positive impact on local economy is expected since having these professionals who are paid high wages stay over longer periods of time will boost local trade, compensating for reduced numbers of visitors and the seasonality of the tourism market. For now, 700 new workers are expected. Adding to the original idea, the Digital Nomad Space was also developed at the John Dos Passos Cultural Centre, in Ponta do Sol.

Profissionais das maiores empresas e empreendedores digitais vão fazer da ilha a sua casa por períodos entre 1 e 6 meses, vivendo como locais nas comunidades à volta da ilha.

Dentro deste projeto, a Ponta do Sol irá contar com um projeto piloto único em todo o mundo, a Digital Nomad Village. A vila tem as condições perfeitas para nómadas que procuram o sol e um estilo de vida tranquilo, rodeadosde natureza, e será a primeira vila nómada do mundo. A beleza natural da vila, o acesso ao mar, à natureza e a excelente internet são os cartões de visita desta bela vila para atrair nómadas digitais de todos os pontos do globo.

Espera-se um impacto muito positivo na economia local que, com a atração destes profissionais com salários elevados, durante um período alargado, vai potenciar o consumo nos negócios locais, colmatando a redução de visitantes e a sazonalidade do mercado turístico. Para já, são esperados 700 novos trabalhadores. Além da ideia original, foi também desenvolvido o espaço Digital Nomad Village, no Centro Cultural John dos Passos, na Ponta do Sol.

The D7 visa has been running for years. But thanks to myopic press focus on Portugal’s ‘golden visa’ programme, many Brits have simply never heard of it.

With the golden visa regime to be ‘scrapped’ this summer for Lisbon, Porto and coastal areas of the mainland, Brits have been flooding estate agents with panicked inquiries fearing golden visas are the last chance for securing a new life in Portugal.

Said one agent that has offices along the Algarve: “There is a great deal of confusion about how Brits can take up residency here.

“Many have been contacting us about golden visas. They seem to have no knowledge at all about the D7. It’s as if people have forgotten Brits have always managed to live in Europe. It’s not something that came because of joining the EU – and it’s not something that will disappear because of Brexit.”

Another told us how demand from Brits who still want to live in the EU has been “huge” since the latter part of 2020. “Once travel restrictions are lifted, we’re expecting to be busier than ever with UK buyers,” he said.

Com o fim do regime e vistos gold para Lisboa, Porto e zonas costeiras do continente previsto para o verão, os Britânicos têm inundado agentesimobiliários em pânico com perguntas por temerem que os vistos gold sejam a sua última oportunidade de estabelecerem uma nova vida em Portugal.

Segundo um agente imobiliário que opera no Algarve: "Existe muita confusão sobre como os Britânicos podem estabelecer residência aqui". 'Muitos têm-nos contactado sobre vistos gold. Parecem desconhecer por completo o visto D7. É como se as pessoas se tivessem esquecido de que os Britânicos sempre viveram as suas vidas na Europa. Não é algo que tenha surgido com a União Europeia, nem é algo que vá desaparecercom o Brexit'.

Outro disse-nos que a procura da parte de britânicos que querem continuar a viver na EU tem sido 'tremenda' desde fins de 2020. De acordo com o mesmo: "Assim que as restrições sejam levantadas, esperamos que o negócio com compradores do RU seja o melhor de sempre".

Some agencies have been finding themselves steering worried Brits away from the whole golden visa scheme (which requires applicants to spend at least €500,000 on a property or €350,000 in certain cases) because, in many cases, the D7 visa is all they need.

“We are careful to advise them that the golden visa is of little benefit to anyone who actually wants to live here, especially for retirees,” one explained. The scheme is oriented towards people who seek to invest in Portugal, get access to the Schengen Space but want to retain their domicile in another part of the world.

D7 is tailor-made for all those – irrespective of age – who want to carve out a new life in Portugal. It has the added benefit of including the ability to freely move through Schengen countries – and apply for permanent residency at the end of five years (which itself can lead to applicants requesting Portuguese nationality).

To qualify for the D7 visa, all people have to do is prove existence of a ‘passive income’: or in the words of one of the many businesses geared to helping foreignersput down roots here, ‘receipt of a reasonable and regular passive income’. This can be in the form of a pension, rental, dividends or ‘certain categories of investment income’.

The applicant must also have a home in Portugal, either rented with a residential rental contract or owned.

The D7 is already hugely popular with Americans and Canadians, both those who have already moved here and those that are planning to. But now, due to Brexit, it is expected to become the ‘go-to option’ for Brits – many of whom seem to have made the decision to move to Portugal just as the gates came crashing down.

Minimum income requirements vary depending on the number of dependents applicants may want to bring with them.

In the main, a principal applicant has to show he/she is in receipt of the current national minimum wage (around €7,620 per annum- this is the 2020 figure). If he/she wants to bring a partner or parents, there has to be proof of a further €3,810 income – and dependent children would require 30% of current minimum wage.
