24 years in the making By Hannah Lester hlester@opelikaobserver.com

Christmas in a Railroad Town has been a staple in Opelika for 24 years. “It’s a great family-friendly event,” said Ken Ward, Opelika main street director. “So we have Santa out there, we have miniature train rides, we have petting zoos, we have all sorts of different activities at the different shops and it’s just a great way for people to come on out and enjoy their community during the holiday season and there’s things for people of all

ages.” The event this year will need to be altered slightly to comply with COVID-19 restrictions. “The good thing about this is event is it is mostly outdoors,” Ward said. “So that is something that really benefits us.” Christmas In A Railroad Town will take place on Dec. 11 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in downtown Opelika. Normally, different businesses would set up craft stations or activities inside their shops. But, due to COVID-19 restrictions, businesses are

not encouraged to host activities, Ward said. Don’t fret — the event will still include activities and crafts. This year, they will be set up outside where social distancing can be observed. “It will be just small, little Christmas-related crafts,” Ward said. “So things such as decorating reindeer ornaments with the candy canes. Just little things like that, that don’t take very much time but are fun ways for children to get involved in the holiday spirit.” There will be picSee RAILROAD TOWN, page A3

The city of Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller named Assistant Chief Kasey Brown the interim chief of police for the city of Opelika effective Dec. 1, following the retirement of Chief John McEachern. Brown has been with the department for 26 years and has served in the traffic unit, patrol unit, canine unit and the vice/narcotics unit. McEachern appointed Brown to the position of assistant chief in 2018. “The city of Opelika is fortunate to have Assistant Chief Brown step in and take on the role as interim chief,”

KASEY BROWN Fuller said. “I am confident his experience and leadership will serve our community well.” The city of Opelika is currently searching for a new police chief and has received applications both internally and externally. City officials anticipate hiring a new chief of police by the end of January.

Smiths Station family receives massive gift on The Ellen Show By Will Fairless Associate Editor Jerwayne and Shawanda Terry, two Smiths Station residents, were featured on The Ellen Show in November. As part of “Ellen’s Hyundai Fundays,” the show recognized and did giveaways to people like the Terrys. Shawanda was a registered nurse before quitting her job to have time to raise a group of children who were going to be put in emergency

foster care. “We found out about the children being placed in emergency foster care, so I decided to leave my job,” Shawanda said on the show on Nov. 3. “They were trying to separate the kids and put them in different homes, so we said, ‘Absolutely not.’” Jerwayne, who now works as a firefighter and paramedic, said on the same show, “Basically, I went to work one day and I had two kids. And when I came home from that shift, I had a whole

bunch of kids. That’s basically what it was.” The Terrys were invited to be on The Ellen Show via a remote video call, although they did not know they were on the show until some time after they saw Ellen DeGeneres on the other end of the call. Shawanda said that she thought they were looking at a photo of the show’s host until she (DeGeneres) addressed the couple directly, at which point the call’s audio had to be See TERRY, page A3
