As an entrepreneur, I have learned to wake up every morning and find a way to press on. There are great days and challenging days, but none of it is ever ”bad” if you love what you do. You just learn to keep pressing forward.

The last 16-18 months were noteworthy, and I’ve decided to share my story while it is fresh.

Not many of you knew Dewain Edwards, but he was our first full time employee. He was actually homeless when we met 10 years ago in Athens, GA. I suppose he and Onward Reserve had something in common in that we had nowhere to go but up at the time. He became a trusted employee and a friend that felt like family. He didn’t know what “e-mail” was when we met, but he grew to eventually run our entire warehouse.

He was a grumpy but big-hearted man who, in his almost 60 years, had never really been given a chance. When we did, he rose to the challenge, and Onward Reserve wouldn’t be what it is today without him. At 5:30AM on January 18, 2020, I got a call from Piedmont hospital that I needed to come right away. Two hours later, Dewain was gone, and I was left dumbfounded, holding a bag of his belongings and a piece of paper that loosely explained how his heart had given out.

This devastating blow to the Onward family was just the tip of the iceberg. A couple of months later the “Corona Virus” seemed like a great name for a hangover. Then it began to get real. Very real. Very quickly. COVID-19 forced us to close stores. In many cases we had no idea whether it would be two weeks or a few months. As time passed we were able to re-open, but things were far from normal. On any given day, I would have multiple, unhinged people contact me furious that someone either was or was not wearing a face mask.

In hindsight, we had no idea if the business would even survive the pandemic. Thankfully, my optimistic nature never allowed that to sink in. In my mind, we had been in tighter spots before. The stores struggled, but our online business was soaring thanks to loyal customers buying gift cards that went towards payroll. The online business almost made up for the lost revenue from store closures right away, yet our bank became a further distraction as they were not willing to renew our existing credit facilities, which were set to expire in August 2020. This had nothing to do with our finances, it was simply because we were a retail business. Time that should have been spent improving our business was spent worrying about finding a new bank. I’ll never forget that.

While I worked to find a new bank, I also somehow convinced the parents of a few interns that it would be OK for them to fly with me in early May 2020 to Washington, DC. We flew into an apocalyptic scene to pack up and close our Georgetown store. There was not a soul in Reagan International other than the 31 people we had flown in with on a plane that seats 200+ and two TSA agents at the front door. That was one of the most chilling experiences of the pandemic for me, but was probably the safest I have felt on a flight in years – thank you Delta.

During this time, we did not lay anyone off. Our team buckled down. We worked hard. We closed a couple of stores and we closed an office – but as light appeared at the end of the tunnel we also opened two new stores. We learned who our real partners were and we saw the true colors of many who we no

longer choose to do business with. We became more efficient. We became stronger. I hope we were a fair and reasonable partner for all of our customers. We had nearly doubled the size of our team in Atlanta as 2020 pressed on.

By November, store sales had recovered and the online business was still on fire. We were on track to have a great year despite the insane set of circumstances we had been dealt. The pandemic was basically in the rear-view mirror, and I was ready to put it all behind us. Then the unthinkable happened.

My father was hospitalized with complications stemming from COVID, which ultimately led to his passing on November 6, 2020.

Tom Callaway was an amazing father who had a lasting impact on his community and certainly on me.

An impact wider than I had known before hearing stories from people who he had helped. The thing I learned about losing a parent is that the only people who truly understand it are the ones who have experienced it. I am so deeply sorry to those of you who know how this feels, and I hope that the rest of you don’t get this perspective anytime soon.

Hard times force us to keep getting up everyday and to keep making decisions that we hope are the right ones. Most of all they force us to either fight or quit. Thankfully, quitting was never an option for me.

As I reflect on this trying time, I now realize that a lot of good has come from it. We have a more authentic connection with our customers. Many of you followed our progress day by day on Instagram @onwardreserve and/or @tjcallaway4. We have a new and improved bank. We are working with better factories, and the quality of our products is getting even better than it was already.

None of this would be possible without our customers. The main reason I am writing this is to genuinely thank you. We are still a small company, and it means a great deal to me that you choose to shop with us. It is still VERY exciting for me to see people “in the wild” wearing Onward Reserve. If you see me please say hello!

We have always strived to Live Authentically at Onward, and last year authenticity won the day. I hope that you feel this way and that you appreciate knowing the people behind our brand and what they stand for. This Fall you are going to learn even more about us. We are returning to Thomasville, GA where I grew up, and to Highlands, NC where we have had a lot of fun.

THANK YOU for giving me the opportunity to continue along with this journey. We are not perfect but we are trying. From the start I told my Dad (who was confused at why I was quitting my investment banking job) that if this whole thing blew up tomorrow I would have no regrets. I still feel that way. If we can make it through last year and actually come out ahead, I think we can make it through most anything – and Dad agreed!
