A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER I have always loved Charleston, South Carolina: the history, the architecture, and the proximity to the water. All of it. When we had the opportunity to open an Onward Reserve on King Street last year, I jumped on it. Our building, on the corner of King and Market, has stood there for nearly two centuries. When we were building out the store, it was important to me to preserve as much of its history and architectural detail as possible. I am proud of how it turned out. Please come visit next time you're in Charleston! For our Fall 2026 line, knew I wanted to design around a perfect fall weekend in the Lowcountry.| We started at Oakland Club, where the mornings are quiet and the traditions run deep. I grew up in Thomasville, Georgia, so l'm no stranger to quail hunting. Oakland Club has preserved horseback quail hunting along with all the club's unique traditions. It's the kind of place that cooks you lunch in the field, gives you a sleeping bag afterward to nap under an oak, and then requires a coat and tie at dinner. We need more places like Oakland Club. I hope you will enjoy reading more about our time there in this catalog. Next, we ended up on the water with our friends at Low Country Oyster Co. They took us out into the ACE Basin to see how they produce their Low Country Cups. We got to sample some Lowcountry Cups straight from the water, an incredible experience. I highly recommend ordering some of their oysters to enjoy this Christmas! As always, our design team knocked it out of the park with more of the favorites you love, like our Classic Five Pocket Pant and new sport coat designs, along with pieces that work well both in the field and around town, like our Red Hills Stretch Canvas Coat. If you're near an Onward Reserve, please stop in to say hello! Onward and Upward, TJ Callaway
a weekend at OAKLAND CLUB pineville, sc
Every great sporting club begins with a piece of exceptional ground and a deep appreciation for the land itself. For Oakland, it started with the quiet beauty of South Carolina's Lowcountry, a landscape of towering longleaf pines, rolling wiregrass, and majestic coveys of Bobwhite Quail. Long before it became one of the country's most celebrated hunting destinations, this land was known as Bluford Plantation, a colonial-era estate established in 1760. In 1901, Charleston Timbermen, R.L. Montague and R.P. Tucker purchased Bluford along with neighboring properties, recognizing the potential of the landscape and the sporting traditions it could support. What began as a successful quail hunt among friends soon became one of the South's most storied sporting clubs. In 1903, Oakland Club was chartered with a singular purpose: to preserve and celebrate the tradition of horseback quail hunting. Over the next century, Oakland earned a reputation as one of America's premier sporting clubs. Generations of members, guides, handlers, and managers helped shape its culture, while thoughtful stewardship of the land ensured the traditions established more than 100 years ago would continue for generations to come. Today, Oakland remains a standard-bearer for Southern sporting tradition, a testament not only to its sporting heritage, but to its unwavering commitment to the land, the hunt, and the people who make both possible.

SETTLING IN There is a certain feeling as you drive down the oak lined entrance to Oakland. The pace slows, the landscape opens up, and the weekend begins to take shape. With nearly 30,000 acres along the Santee River, there is a sense of being somewhere removed from the everyday. If you are lucky you will be greeted by Daisy, Oakland’s resident deer. Found alone as a fawn during a controlled burn, Daisy was left in hopes that her mother would return. When she never did, Daisy was taken in and
has been part of life around the main house ever since. These days, she can be found close to general manager Ryan Bowles, often alongside his dog, Bella. Her blaze orange collar makes sure everyone knows she’s part of the Oakland family. For generations, people have come here for the sporting life, but the appeal of Oakland has always extended beyond the hunt itself. It is a place shaped by tradition, hospitality, and the company you keep. For a couple of days, the rest of the world can wait.
THE MORNING HUNT Mornings at Oakland begin with breakfast and the anticipation of the day ahead. Gentlemen are clad in briar pants, shooting shirts, caps, and layers made for a few hours in the field. Being “in costume,” is part of the tradition and authenticity that makes the Oakland experience what it is. Outside, the property begins to come alive. Horses, dogs, guides, and hunters prepare for a morning spent moving through Oakland’s quail woods. By around nine, the hunt is underway, with hunters traveling the property on horseback or by Jeep and following the day wherever the birds take them. For the next few hours, the focus is on the field. Then, sometime around noon, the morning hunt winds down and everyone makes their way toward one of Oakland’s most beloved traditions: lunch.

IN THE SADDLE For more than a century, horses have been part of the rhythm of a Southern quail hunt. On the great sporting properties of the South, horseback became a natural way to cover miles of open pine country while keeping pace with bird dogs working far out front. Hunters and guides rode from covey to covey, often accompanied by specially built wagons carrying dogs and supplies. What began as a practical way to move across vast stretches of land became one of the defining traditions of the sport. At Oakland, that tradition runs deep. The property’s historic stable and carriage house date to around 1905, and generations of guides and horsemen have helped carry the custom forward through more than a century of hunts. Mark Phillips notes that during quail season, the guides can spend roughly three months of the year on horseback, a reminder of just how central the horses remain to the Oakland experience. Today, riding through Oakland’s quail woods offers a perspective that is hard to replicate any other way. From the saddle, the pace slows just enough to take in the longleaf pines, open cover, and movement of the dogs ahead through the woods. There is a sense of continuity to it all, with each ride connecting the present-day hunt to generations of sportsmen who moved through the same landscape in much the same way. At Oakland, horseback hunting is more than tradition. It is part of the character of the place itself, season after season. RED HILLS STRETCH CANVAS COAT

FIELD TESTED
Some of the best pieces of shooting apparel were never designed to make a statement. They were designed to work. The classic barn coat earned its place by shielding farmers, hunters, and landowners from briars, wind, and changing weather through long days outdoors. Over time, its rugged canvas construction, generous pockets, and unmistakable silhouette became fixtures of Southern sporting life. For more than a century, its simple design has remained largely unchanged, a testament to getting it right the first time. Those pockets weren't just for show. Large front pockets kept gloves, shells, and other essentials close at hand, while side-entry pockets offered a welcome place to warm cold hands between walks through the field. Every detail served a purpose, proving that good design often begins with simple utility. It's a reminder that the most iconic designs often come from solving everyday problems. Onward Reserve's Red Hills Coat carries that tradition forward. Inspired by the timeless utility of the original, it pairs durable canvas with a modern fit and thoughtful details designed for today's sportsman. Whether layered over a sweater on a crisp morning hunt or worn through the streets of Charleston, it's built for the same reason the original barn coat became a classic: to be worn often, to get better with age, and to become a trusted companion for countless seasons to come. Built for the field. Refined for everywhere else. RED HILLS STRETCH CANVAS COAT

FIELD TESTED
Every piece of traditional quail hunting attire has a purpose, and briar pants are no exception. Built to protect hunters from briars, thorns, and thick cover, their reinforced canvas fronts became an essential part of the sport. Decades later, they remain a symbol of Southern sporting tradition and functional gear built for the field. At Oakland, briar pants remain part of the traditional uniform. On our podcast, Mark Phillips describes the look simply as “South Georgia clothing.” Briar pants were invented in Thomasville, Georgia, by George W. Stafford, who applied military tent canvas to the front of trousers to protect hunters in the quail woods. We kept that traditional utility but brought the fit up to date, starting with our best-selling Classic Five Pocket Pant and adding a little stretch. The result is a more comfortable take on a sporting classic, built for long days in the field and plenty of time in the saddle.

LUNCH in the FIELD Longtime Oakland Club member Mark Phillips joined TJ Callaway on the Unreserved podcast to share the traditions and stories that have shaped one of the South's premier sporting clubs. A Charleston native and attorney, Mark has been a member of Oakland for more than two decades, welcoming friends and family to experience Oakland's timeless customs, exceptional hospitality, and enduring sense of camaraderie. His perspective offers a glimpse into the rituals that make a visit to Oakland unlike anywhere else. Among Oakland's many traditions, the midday field lunch stands out as one of Mark's favorites. After a morning behind the dogs, the pace shifts. Horses are watered, shotguns are set aside, and everyone gathers around an open fire beneath the pines. Once spread across different corners of the property, field lunches are now shared in one central gathering place, giving members and guests time to reconnect before the afternoon hunt. Stories from the morning are retold,
tomorrow's guests become today's friends, and no one seems to be in a hurry. As Mark says, "Sometimes that's the highlight of the day." The meal itself is part of the tradition. Bacon always finds the skillet first, followed by generous helpings of pork chops, burgers, quail, and whatever else was decided around the dinner table the night before. Once everyone has eaten more than they probably should, sleeping bags appear beneath the oaks for an afternoon nap before the dogs are loaded once again and the hunt resumes. It's all part of the rhythm of a day at Oakland, summed up best by a favorite saying heard around the club, and one we heard ourselves during our visit: "If you've got a problem with alcohol, cholesterol, or protocol, you're in the wrong place." It's a line delivered with a grin, but it captures the spirit of Oakland perfectly. Good food, good company, and a deep respect for tradition have always been just as important as the hunt itself. At Oakland, that slower pace is part of the tradition.

"IF YOU'VE GOT A PROBLEM WITH ALCOHOL, CHOLESTEROL, OR PROTOCOL, YOU'RE IN THE WRONG PLACE."
THE FIRE & THE FEAST
Every great field lunch begins with a fire. Long before the first plate is served, cast-iron skillets are set over glowing coals and bacon finds its place in the pan. The crackle of the fire, the smell of wood smoke, and the familiar rhythm of cooking outdoors signal a welcome change of pace after the morning hunt. It's a ritual that's been repeated for generations and one that remains at the heart of every day afield. From there, the menu comes together one skillet at a time. Pork chops, burgers, quail, hearty sides, and homemade desserts are prepared over the open flame, with recipes and traditions passed from one hunt to the next. The meal is generous by design, encouraging everyone to linger a little longer, refill their plates, and enjoy the company before heading back into the field. At Oakland, lunch isn't measured by the menu alone, but by the conversations shared around the fire and the memories made long after the last bite.

THE NAP
After lunch, there is no rush to get back in the saddle. Sleeping bags are rolled out beneath the trees, hats are pulled low, and the field grows quiet for an hour or two. It's a welcome pause between the morning and afternoon hunts, and perhaps one of Oakland's more unique and unexpected traditions. By midafternoon, everyone is rested, the dogs are ready, and it's time to head back into the field. It's a rhythm that feels distinctly Oakland: hunt hard, eat well, slow down, and enjoy the day for all that comes with it.

A good field shirt should work as hard as the rest of your gear. The All Weather Shirt was built with days outdoors in mind, combining rugged durability with the comfort and freedom of movement needed for a morning behind the dogs. Four-way mechanical stretch keeps it easy through long hours in the field, while a classic fit and Western back yoke nod to the sporting shirts that came before it. True to its name, it is made to handle whatever the day brings. Tough enough for a hunt, comfortable enough to wear long after the guns are put away, the All Weather Shirt is the kind of piece that earns a permanent place in the sporting wardrobe. From the first ride out to the last drink of the day, there is little reason to change.

A shooting shirt has always been more than another layer in the field. Designed with the sportsman in mind, our Battery Performance Twill Shooting Shirt pairs the traditional details of sporting attire with performance built for long days outdoors. Lightweight performance fabric wicks moisture away from the skin, offers UPF 40+ protection, and provides the comfort needed for hours spent following dogs and moving from covey to covey. The signature brown suede patch at the right shooting shoulder gives the shirt its unmistakable sporting character, a detail rooted in the purpose-built garments worn by generations of wingshooters. Finished in a classic fit with an easy-care, non-iron finish, it is a modern take on a piece that has long belonged in the quail hunter’s wardrobe.

BACK TO THE HOUSE
There is something special about the final stretch of an afternoon hunt at Oakland. The golden hour. The shadows of the pines get longer, the light softens, and after a full day in the saddle, even the ride back feels like part of the experience. Mark Phillips describes those last thirty minutes as a particularly magical time. By the time everyone heads in, the miles have caught up with you in the best possible way. Horses make their way back toward the house, and a cold beverage is a welcome sight. Then it is upstairs to shower, shake off the dust of the field, and get ready for whatever the evening has in store. As Mark puts it, you are "pretty worn but in a good, happy way."
THE STUMP HOUSE
Along Oakland’s entrance avenue sits one of the club’s most distinctive landmarks. In 1933, a massive hollow cypress was discovered in the Santee swamp by club manager Thomas P. Crawford and members of the Oakland staff. The tree was brought back to the property and transformed into a tiny one-room structure, complete with a roof, brick chimney, windows, and a doorway. Known today as the Stump House, the little building once served an important purpose in the daily rhythm of a hunt. It became the kennelman’s “wait station,” where he would receive the dogs as the hunting wagon returned from the field. The club’s dog kitchen and kennels stood nearby, making this unlikely little cypress house part of Oakland’s longstanding sporting tradition. Nearly a century later, the Stump House still stands, a small reminder of the people, dogs, and traditions that have shaped life at Oakland for generations. JACKSON PULLOVER - SURF

THE CARD TABLE
Some of Oakland’s best stories have little to do with the hunt. Inside McCormick Cottage sits a card table tied to one of the club’s most intriguing pieces of lore. As the story goes, Hootie Johnson and Hugh McColl once sat around the table during a hunting trip and talked about the changing banking landscape, deregulation, and what the future of the industry might hold. What followed would eventually become part of the story of Bank of America. Mark Phillips is quick to call the tale a legend, one he has never been able to completely confirm, but perhaps that is part of its appeal. As he says, “A lot of business gets done either advertently or inadvertently there.” Whether every detail happened exactly as the story has been passed down or not, the old card table feels right at home at Oakland, a place where generations of interesting people have gathered, hunted, talked, and occasionally left with ideas much bigger than the weekend itself. OAKLAND DINNER
As evening settles over Oakland, everyone comes together at the main house. Cocktails in the parlor begin around 6:30 or 7:00, giving the different hunting parties a chance to trade stories from the day before the dinner bell rings around 7:30. From there, the group makes its way to the dining room for a meal that Mark describes simply as “really special, good food.” Even the seating follows tradition. The most senior member takes the head of the table, the second most senior sits at the opposite end, and guests fill in between. It is a bit of Oakland protocol that has endured through the years, adding a touch of formality to an evening centered on good food and even better company. Dinner may mark the end of the meal, but rarely the end of the evening. Before long, everyone finds their way back to the parlor, where red wine, brown liquor, and conversation carry on well into the night. DI PRAY BRICK PLAID SPORT COAT

LOWCO TREY "CRICKET" McMILLAN FOUNDER & PRESIDENT OF LOWCOUNTRY OYSTER CO.
Trey "Cricket" McMillan is a lifelong Lowcountry waterman and the founder of Lowcountry Oyster Company. Raised in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, he grew up on the water, where days spent fishing, crabbing, and navigating the tidal creeks instilled a deep respect for the coast and the traditions that surround it. After a successful career as a professional sportfishing captain, Cricket traded offshore tournaments for oyster farming, launching Lowcountry Oyster Company in 2017. Today, he raises premium oysters in the protected waters of the ACE Basin using sustainable aquaculture practices that support both exceptional shellfish and a healthier coastal ecosystem. Through his work, Cricket is helping shape the future of South Carolina oyster farming while honoring the waterways that first inspired him.
LOWCOUNTRY Home to Lowcountry Oyster Company, the ACE Basin is named for the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto rivers, whose waters come together to create one of the largest protected estuaries on the East Coast. This remarkable landscape of marshes, tidal creeks, and winding waterways defines South Carolina's Lowcountry, where nutrientrich waters create the ideal environment for shellfish to thrive, making the region one of the country's leading centers for sustainable oyster farming. The Onward Reserve team got to spend the morning on the water with Trey and Sean, Lowco's farm manager. They walked us through every step in the journey of a Lowcountry Cup, from the ACE Basin to the processing facility. From pulling floating cages from the water to sorting, packing, and boxing oysters bound for restaurants and homes across the country, we saw firsthand the care and craftsmanship behind every shell. What stood out just as much was the sense of community. Lowco builds its own growing cages for farms across the region, and Trey serves as Vice President of the South Carolina Shellfish Growers Association, a role that reflects the industry's collaborative spirit. Around here, growers share knowledge, support one another, and work together to strengthen South Carolina's shellfish industry while protecting the waters they all depend on. Later that day, we enjoyed the very same oysters at Charleston favorites Leon's and 167 Raw, proof that a great oyster shines no matter where it's served. But if you ask us, nothing compares to tasting one freshly shucked just minutes after leaving the water, with the endless Lowcountry marsh stretching out in every direction. Clean ocean brine, balanced salinity, and a rich, savory finish define the Lowcountry Cup. Raised in the pristine waters of the ACE Basin, each oyster reflects the character of South Carolina's coast.

ON THE WATER Working an oyster farm means spending plenty of time on the water. During the summer, Lowco’s floating cages are tended every week, keeping the crew moving across the farm by boat. Over the years, they’ve added hydraulic cranes and mechanized as much of the process as possible, but there’s still no getting around the handson work. Raising oysters means pulling cages, tending each crop, and keeping everything moving as the oysters grow.
48 | ONWARDRESERVE.COM
888.543.5022
That process takes time. Lowcountry Cups can begin reaching harvestable size around nine or ten months, but the farm plans on closer to a year for each crop, allowing enough oysters to reach the consistent size and shape they’re after. Lowco typically harvests them between 2¾ and 3 inches, intentionally growing an oyster that looks as good on a raw bar as it tastes. Trey describes them as an appetizer rather than a meal, the kind of oyster meant to be shared around the table before dinner arrives.
But size and shape are only part of the story. Trey compares oysters to wine: the place they come from has a direct influence on their flavor. The growing method matters, but so do the waters themselves. Lowco’s oysters are raised among roughly 350,000 acres of protected wetlands, in the clean, salty water of the ACE Basin. That connection between place and product is at the heart of what Lowco calls “Tide to Table”,knowing where your food was grown, who handled it, and the journey it took to reach your plate.

ROOM TO GROW An oyster never really stops growing. As Trey explains, the challenge is keeping each crop moving, larger oysters take up more room in the cages, get heavier, and leave less space for the next generation coming behind them. an afternoon in DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON At the corner of King and Market Streets, 220 King has stood at the center of Charleston commerce for nearly two centuries. The corner also sits on one of the higher points of the Charleston peninsula, a fitting vantage point for an address that has witnessed nearly two centuries of history. The building’s story dates to the aftermath of the Great Fire of 1838, one of the most destructive fires in Charleston’s history. After flames swept through much of the surrounding neighborhood, hardware merchant Nathan Hart acquired the property and constructed the substantial three-story brick building that remains today. Hart reopened his business within its walls, returning commerce to a stretch of King Street that was quickly rebuilding from the devastation. The building reflects the practical character of Charleston’s 19th-century commercial architecture. Its narrow King Street frontage, tall proportions, masonry construction, and upper stories are characteristic of the historic storefronts that came to define the city’s principal shopping district. Behind the façade, many traces of the building’s earliest years have survived. Original 1830s brick, flooring, and millwork remain throughout the space, preserving the craftsmanship and materials of a building constructed prior to the civil war. Like many of the buildings along King Street, 220 King evolved alongside the city around it. While merchants occupied the storefront below, the floors above found other uses. During the Civil War era, photographer H. C. Foster operated a studio on the building’s third floor,
capturing another chapter in the life of the property as Charleston moved through one of the most consequential periods in its history. By the early 20th century, the building began a particularly fitting chapter in its story. In 1917, Mendel Dumas acquired a pawnshop at the address and transformed it into M. Dumas & Sons. Beginning with work clothes and service uniforms, the family business grew into one of Charleston’s best-known menswear stores. With the city’s strong naval presence, Dumas became a destination for officers stationed in Charleston and later earned another distinction as the first retailer in South Carolina to carry Levi’s denim. M. Dumas & Sons remained at 220 King for more than half a century before moving farther north on King Street in 1973. Through changing businesses, generations of shoppers, and nearly two centuries of Charleston history, the building has remained unmistakably connected to King Street’s identity as a place of trade and gathering. Its surviving brick, woodwork, and floors are reminders that the space has never been simply a backdrop. Today, 220 King begins its latest chapter as home to Onward Reserve. For a Southern brand rooted in tradition, craftsmanship, and a sense of place, the address feels especially fitting. What began as a 19th-century merchant’s store and later became home to one of Charleston’s longstanding menswear institutions continues its original purpose nearly two centuries later: welcoming people through its doors and carrying on the retail tradition of King Street.
