It’s done on purpose. While growing up in the 70s, everyone’s house that I visited had a copy of the Jackson 5’s Christmas album. The one that had a picture of the five brothers on the cover that looked like a present. It was a ‘must have’. Who could forget classics such as “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and more. Our cover is our homage to that Jackson 5 album cover.

It’s that time of the year for gift giving and receiving. No matter how modest those in your life are, everyone can appreciate a fantastic gift. Michelle give us a few ideas that will not disappoint. It’s the season of giving. Give big if you can. It’s the thought that counts, so think big.

As we say goodbye to another year, it’s always a time for reflection and a time to look forward. A lot of things can happen over a 12-month period. All it takes to change is a little effort. Dare to dream your dream and never be afraid to give it a shot. In the end, the only thing you will regret is not taking a chance.

OTL makes a return to Twin Creeks Country Club. We first visited the club back in 2007. It’s been 10 years and the course has matured into an exceptional track. There have been subtle changes over the years, but it’s still a thing of beauty and the conditions are phenomenal.

The members love it and so do we.

If you enjoyed the snowfall we had earlier in the month and you want more, try one of the ski resorts in Colorado. The Ritz Carlton, Bachelor Gulch and Beaver Creek offer a true chance to create more than memories in the snow. They are everything you want in a winter play-land.

There is so much to do there this time of the year. From the beautifully decorated Riverwalk to cool places to eat, San Antonio is thriving. I took a trip down while doing the story and had a blast. I stayed at Hotel Valencia and had dinner at Bohanans for the first time.

I loved it. I’ve known about it for around 10 years, but never set aside a time to try it. As a steak lover, it exceeded expectations. While it wasn’t part of the story, it deserves honorable mention. From the elegant atmosphere to the stately design, Bohanans has quickly become a favorite. Can’t wait to return.

On Friday night, I embarked on a historical tour. The Barwalk Tour came highly recommended. With their tagline of ‘The Barwalk: Drink Up History”, my curiosity was peaked.

This tour series, led by Emzy King, the charismatic encyclopedia of historical facts, photos, and folkloric stories was one of the best tours I have ever ventured on and should be part of the Texas Bucket List. Emzy has an enticing way of making history fascinating and fun. We met at The Alamo and learned stories that I had sadly never heard in all of my Texas History classes growing up. We then toured some of the oldest and most historically relevant spots in San Antonio along the Riverwalk and downtown, all while quenching our thirst for knowledge with craft cocktails created by the city’s premier mixologists.

From the Menger Bar and Hotel, which housed the first brewery in Texas to the area’s first luxury hotel, The St. Anthony and its ghoulish ghost stories, Emzy weaves fascinating trivia and archived photos that keep you begging the stories will not end. Ghost stories, ‘Dateline’ worthy murder mysteries, and juicy celebrity tidbits involving Johnny Cash and his first wife and even President JFK ‘s final public appearance prior to his fateful date in Dallas. This tour will appeal to the curiousminded as well as the most avid historian.

Everyone can learn something new that will heighten your intrigue of this colorful gem of Texas. So, ‘Drink Up History’ as you take in a new side to San Antonio that is worth the trip alone.

The atmosphere is rock star quality and the live music after a Spurs victory is iconic. There is nothing like game night. It’s perfect for a date or a fantastic family experience.

Saturday found me strolling through the hip new redeveloped Pearl Brewery. The famous Pearl Brewhouse was established in 1883 and finally closed its doors in 2001. Located just north of San Antonio’s Downtown, this area found a rebirth with the esteemed Culinary Arts Institute opening a campus, spawning a plethora of restaurants offering a variety of bakeries, gastropubs, and high-end dining surely to appeal to everyone from gourmet critic to self-proclaimed foodie.

This urban dream offers plenty of retail, outdoor parks, farmers markets, small music amphitheaters, and numerous tasting rooms boasting wine flights and beer samplings to make your Saturday fun from morning brunch to late night. Among the cafes is the famous Bakery Lorraine, who’s colorful fresh baked macaroons would bring a daily line out the door. It was worth the wait. I bought a box of these delectable delights with the intent of bringing them home, however I managed to not make it out of the café with even one left. We devoured the sampling of macaroon flavors such as red velvet, caramel apple, pumpkin spice, lavender, and my favorite, the earl grey.

San Antonio is a pulsating city not only known for the Alamo but for the celebrity chefs like Jason Dady. I had a culinary experience at one of the Newest American Steakhouse called Range. The Texas driven concept has resources from Cameron, Texas and the Hill Country area, its upscale ambiance includes fresh seafood selections from the Gulf Coast Region. Range is not just a fellow golfer’s playground, their exclusive menu offers items like the infamous Ribeye Tomahawk 18-ounce steak, and Grilled Texas Bobwhite Quail. Stop by and dine in the heart of the Riverwalk at Range.

Signature rests on 550 acres of Texas Hill Country in San Antonio. It is recognized as the number one restaurant by Open Table Diner Choice Awards and it lives up to its reputation. What’s a weekend getaway without brunch?

Lastly, I popped into the infamous Buckhorn Saloon, the oldest running saloon in all of Texas, which houses a working bar, the Texas Rangers Museum and The Buckhorn Museum. I saddled up to the bar for a cold beer and reminisced about the cowboys, ranchers, and gunslingers that sat in that very spot before me since their opening in 1881. The entire saloon and museum is housed with more antlers than an army of venison. In fact, their motto was: bring them a pair of antlers and get a free beer; bring them a taxidermied artifact and be rewarded with a shot of whiskey. This tradition has decorated every inch of space with museum worthy pieces fun to stroll through and soak up a bit of the old Wild West.

The saloon owners were also avid travelers and hunters that added to their collection from across the world. Stroll around the museum enjoying such unique sites as rattlesnake-tail art presented to President Teddy Roosevelt during his scouting trips for Texas Rangers to replicas of the infamous Bonnie & Clyde capture, traveling wild west novelty shows, the first silverback gorilla seen in the south and even the world record holding largest Longhorn. Although entertaining to adults, The Buckhorn Museum caters more to the curiosity of children. However, the Texas Rangers Museum is a well-presented piece of history that commands respect and intrigue. It is a true immersion in to the development of Texas to learn about the brave men that fought for the safety of our great state.

With the Riverwalk’s reflective waters winding through tree lined walkways, bustling downtown mingling history with the newest hotspots, and unique urban neighborhoods such as Pearl, there is not a shortage of activities to explore, eateries to try, and beautiful hotels to lounge, San Antonio has plenty to offer. As I left feeling renewed and enthralled with this quaint city, I was already looking forward to my return.

It includes 14 lightweight sensors that screw into the butt of each grip in your club set, and a smartphone app. Once synched together, each sensor automatically tracks and analyzes all of your shots. The latest version dazzles you with graphics, and shows you shot histories of all your rounds, analytics for many game aspects, and performance trends. Do you ever mis-club a shot because you had the distance all wrong? Even when the cart has a GPS display, you can’t always drive it to your ball. Which is why using a rangefinder is key. You can conveniently take it anywhere on the course for exact distances to the target and hazards. Callaway’s latest, the 250 Laser ($230), features “Pin Acquisition Technology” that can lock onto the flagstick from 300 yards away, and give you yardage readings to objects from up to 950 yards out. It comes with a hard protective case, and also includes a unique magnetic strap that mounts to magnetic surfaces -- like the frame of a golf cart.

STORY BY BRECH SPRADLEY, PGA DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION BARTON CREEK GOLF ACADEMY When we are playing our best golf, we are playing with a feeling of confidence. Having confidence in yourself and your game allows you to get the most out of your skills. I work with many competitive players and many of them have the same issues as recreational golfers when it comes to performance confidence. Everyone goes through lulls in their confidence at times. The goal is to gain control over our thoughts to support our game. It’s the chicken or the egg concept. Does confidence breed better golf or do we need to play better to be confident?

It’s probably both. However, I do think it’s important to act confident towards your golf game, regardless of how you feel. Be realistic about skills that need more practice, but never let yourself go down the road of negative selftalk. Dwell on your strengths and things that you have more control over. Make sure you do not let the things you can’t control affect you. Take the bad bounces with the good.

You can control is your attitude. Attitude is a key ingredient to confidence about your game. During Tiger’s lengthy stay at #1 in the world, he always found positive things to say in his post-round interviews about his

game. He acknowledged where he made mistakes, but he always added what he did right in the round as well. We also need to find opportunities to compliment ourselves on the way we played a round. No doubt there is a correlation between your skill level and your scoring potential; but, so many golfers don’t play to their potential because of low self-confidence.

One common mistake I see that can drain self-confidence is when players don’t play within their abilities.

They will tend to make strategy decisions based on their best shots rather than their more typical shots. Going for the “impossible” shot instead of playing the shot they know they can pull off. Then when success doesn’t come, the negativity begins to creep into their game. It’s crucial to discipline your mind to evaluate the best possible shot to hit for the situation. In many cases, it is the conservative approach that helps you produce the most confident swing. When you build on the successes that are more possible and line up with your skill level, you will have a much better chance to play at a level that you thought was impossible.

Finally, practice being confident on the course. One technique I like to teach is the “Bubble.” I heard the Bubble technique from Dr. Deborah Graham, who is a golf psychologist. I have players draw a circle on a notecard.

Inside the circle they write down words that describe how they feel when they’re playing well and feeling confident with their abilities. Outside the circle, they write down words that describe how they feel or think about themselves when having doubt or low confidence. The goal is to “stay in the bubble” and focus on the bubble cues.

If they have doubt and find their thoughts creeping outside of the bubble, I tell them to acknowledge and refocus their thoughts on the bubble cues. It takes some practice, but you can learn to dismiss the negative thoughts quicker and return to those thoughts that help you feel confident.

Try the Bubble technique next time you play, make realistic decisions on the course, and remain confident.

STORY BY DAVE PELZ Students in our Dave Pelz Scoring Game Schools ask all the time how to hit high, soft shots. The easiest solution is to put a lob wedge in your bag and practice using it, so you’re ready for situations that call for the ball to travel high and land soft.

Take this common scenario, for example: Your ball sits 40 yards from the pin and you have to carry a bunker with only a few yards of green to work with. You need the right tool for the job, a lob wedge to hit the ball high to carry the trouble while still landing it softly enough to stop near the hole.

There’s a myth that lob wedges are only for good players. Truth is, anyone who wants to score better and routinely faces shots over obstacles to tight pins needs a lob wedge. In today’s game, green complexes are more demanding and we see so many fast, sloping greens, it’s important to be able to stop your shots near the hole. Think of it this way: the more greens you miss, the more you need a lob wedge.

The thing that is important to understand about hitting a lob wedge is that you must NOT decelerate during the downswing. This causes your hands to lag behind the clubhead at impact. If you hands are even or ahead of the ball at impact, you’ll find that high, soft shots are easier to hit with the lob wedge than with any other club.

The technique for the basic 40-yard lob wedge shot is pretty simple: Start with the ball

in the middle of your stance and take a threequarter-length backswing (With your arms pointing in the “Nine O’ Clock” position). If you play right-handed, let your left hand lead the club to the ball and accelerate through the impact zone as you shift forward to a full finish with your weight on your front leg. There’s no need to open the clubface until you’re comfortable playing a variety of shots with the lob wedge. The loft of the club will do the work for you. It’s easier to hit the ball solidly and straight with a square clubface.

Many golfers are now even putting a 64-degree wedge in the bag to combat the severe hazards, slopes, speeds and elevations found on today’s modern golf course designs. The only real “trick” to hitting these clubs is starting with a square club face and accelerating through the shot to a full finish. Knowing when to use these clubs is also important. Next time you need a quick, soft landing, reach for a more lofted wedge and swing with a square clubface instead of opening the face of a lesslofted wedge. See which method is easier and yields the best results most often. I think you’ll soon be a convert to the lofted and extra-lofted wedges designed to give extra weapons around the greens.

Quiet Strength STORY BY LESLIE AWDYKOWYZ CERTIFIED POP PILATES INSTRUCTOR It’s the Holiday’s and traveling is among many, taking time to relax our minds and enjoy a break from the norm, but that doesn’t mean your health has to take a backseat. We often struggle to find the equipment we’d prefer, or perhaps you don’t have

a comfortable surface for core work. Give your body a little break and time to rejuvenate too, but keep in mind some simple core exercises which you can perform from a standing position, giving you the freedom to do them anywhere you go.

Raise your right leg straight in front of you, pointing the toes to activate the quads. Turn your torso towards the lifted leg and come back to center. The modification for this movement is to keep your leg at a 90-degree angle instead of straight out.

Another effective movement for core strength and stability is called the “teaser”. Place your fingertips behind your knees and lift your chest, shoulders back, straight back. Lift your feet off the ground, and when you are comfortable, grab your ankles or calves and straighten your legs. Hold that position for as long as you can. If you’d like to make it a little more challenging, stay in the teaser position but release your hands from behind your ankles and keep the arms raised.

In a ticking motion, lower your arms and legs to extend your body to almost lie flat, and come back to the teaser. Perform this exercise 10 times.

Generally, ab work is done on the floor and can be intense and aggressive, but by incorporating standing exercises into your routine, you will not only continue to strengthen your core, but also improve your balance.

Go ahead, take your time to relax and refuel, just don’t let traveling or lack of comfort be an excuse to neglect your exercise habits.

Easy Pose (Sukhasana) with 3-Part Breath This seated pose stretches and strengthens the back while allowing the lungs to open fully for mindful breathing. The 3-Part Breath can instantly calm the mind, reduce blood pressure and eliminate the effects of stress. The three parts of the breath initiate in the lower lungs, expanding the abdomen through the diaphragm, and finally lifting the chest. Clear your mind by focusing on slow deep breaths or on things that bring you gratitude and joy.

Instructions •Sit with your legs crossed in front.

•Maintain a neutral pelvis without rolling forward or backward in the hips.

In Austin, being open for 9 years is practically old guard – Péché, in the heart of what is ironically called the “Warehouse District” on 4th Street, has seen sleek office buildings and apartment towers replace many of those old warehouses in that short amount of time.

pened almost nine years ago as an Absinthe Bar, Péché had the sleek speak-easy vibe that was perfect timing for 2008. The look was dead on: the room was long and narrow, with distressed brick and an immensely long bar. It was darkly lit with old light fixtures that invited you to a different age.

The back wall was filled with hundreds of bottles of spirits and liquors and on the bar, beautiful antique absinthe water spouts finished the look.

Péché was and happily still is popular for an amazing list of over 60 cocktails, some from prohibition times and some modern concoctions that would have been well at home in the 1920’s. The drinks menu is categorized by base: Gin, Whisky, Rum, Tequila, Brandy and Absinthe, with the latter getting the lion’s share of the list. The bulk of the cocktails are infused with a wide variety of house made bitters, fine French liquors and even a house made ginger beer. The bar proudly serves no beers on tap and only one in a can.

Though the love of a good cocktail is well evident by the full bar and the many regulars, Péché’s secret weapon for longevity has been owner Rob Pate and Executive Chef John Lichtenberger’s attention to amazing food.

The menu is firmly anchored with French bistro favorites that make quick decisions impossible. The French Onion soup sounds great, but the Potato soup on the daily menu might be great too. The escargot is amazing, but so is the steak tartar; and so it progresses through the menu—just one hard choice after another.

Last week I invited some friends to join me to try some old favorites and maybe find something new.

Though partial to the French 75, I ordered a Fig Manhattan – it was small and pretty with a thick layer of foam that made it look a bit like a dessert. I was a

bit embarrassed and thought I might have had made a mistake, then tried it. It was slightly sweet, almost Christmasy with nice hints of spice and vanilla, and the fig foam was delicious. It did, however, hide a decidedly good punch. I realize quickly that here, pretty does not mean weak.

I started dinner with a Classic French Onion soup.

It had a deep rich broth with lots of tender onions and a large ‘crouton’ topped with a good amount of baked Gruyere. It was nicely presented in a small crock with bits of browned baked cheese around the rim.

My friends started with the Crab and Grapefruit Salad and the famous Mac and Cheese. The salad was served on a long platter layered with arugula and topped with small slices of pink grapefruit, red bell pepper, and a generous amount of pure white crab meat. It was seasoned with a bit of cracked pepper and finished with a mint vinaigrette. It’s a great combination of flavors and I’m pretty sure that two of these could have been put away easily.

The Mac and Cheese at Péché really should come with a disclaimer – it is addictive and just barely an appetizer. The mac is thick shell-like pasta and the cheese, Italian Grand Padano (similar to Parmigiano Reggiano), is much closer to a rich béchamel. When you add the pieces of duck confit it is enough to call it a meal all on its own.

Prepared for excess, we moved onto entrées of Braised Short Ribs and the Grilled Niman Ranch Pork Chop.

Having had the Short Ribs recently, I ordered the Pork Chop and was happy to find it seared nicely, tender (though quite thick), and importantly for me, not salty. The sautéed kale and black-eyed peas were a nice and light compliment. I rounded out the meal with a solid Regis Bouvier Burgundy.

The short ribs were slow-cooked to very tender, served with a savory sauce on a bed of duck fat mashed potatoes. This is a hearty dish and following the Mac and Cheese is a pretty good challenge.

I was determined to finish the evening with one of Péché’s well-known desserts, pecan pie, which recently made news as one of “Five Outstanding Pecan Pies in Austin”. Péché’s version is a thin tart artfully served with a scoop of ice cream and a fine crumble. Given that pecan pie is very sweet, the modest serving size was spot on.

My favorite for the evening was another Péché favorite, the crème brûlée. Over the years, I’ve liked crème brûlée less and less as more places kept upping both the fat and the sugar content.

Péché’s version was again good on portion size and perfect in flavor and texture, the profusion of tiny vanilla bean seeds emphasizing the attention paid to the quality and flavor.

We finished the evening with a few more cocktails – a couple of classic Sazerac’s (Rye, Sugar, Peychaud’s bitters, Absinthe Rinse), and a Dark and Stormy (Rum, Lime, House Ginger Beer).

With a perfect evening of French comfort food and well-made drinks it would have been wonderful to have wandered out to a cold evening – but alas that is the one thing Rob and his team couldn’t control.

many of the holes,” says head golf professional Troy Dickson. “There’s a definite surprise factor once people get on the course and see how much elevation change and natural beauty there is out here.”

The 7,033-yard, par-72 Fred Couples Signature course (co-designed with Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley) features with all the thrills of a resort course and the gentle continuity of a classically designed members’ club. The “twin”

This private club (and centerpiece of a 760-acre master-planned community) is situated 20 miles northwest of downtown Austin, but when you first see the sweeping panoramas and elevation changes on this course, you’ll feel like you’ve ventured much farther into the Texas Hill Country.

creeks the course was named for come into play on thirteen holes in either rippling hazard or dry-bed form while century-old pecan and oak trees border the fairways along with numerous rock outcroppings that serve not only for aesthetic appeal, but also help shape many of the hole designs.

“The big take away from playing this golf course is the chance to be surrounded by serenity and beauty. It happens to be a great golf course, but it’s also great commune with nature,” Dickson says.

Twin Creeks opens with a manageable par 4 that swings slightly from left to right, #1 should help you open your round with a decent score if you can avoid the fairway bunker on the left side of the landing area.

The second hole is all about strategy. A short par 5 that’s reachable if your drive can narrowly avoid fairway bunkers left and the creek that snakes its way across the fairway

from the left and winds around to border the right side of the green. A small bail-out area left of the green makes it even more enticing two go for the green on your second shot.

“I like number two because everyone who hits a good drive can go for the green in two,” says Dickson. “That’s a missing element in a lot of modern courses that try to beat you to death with yardage.”

The par-5 fifth is on the other end of the distance spectrum. At 593 yards from the tips, this hole drop down about 90 dramatic feet from tee to fairway. Bordered on the left by a dense collection of trees and on the right by the ever-present creek, this hole features a testy approach that must cross the creek and clear deep bunkers short and left of the green. Miss the green here and you’ll discover one of the many ways this layout plays much tougher than it looks.

One of the front nine’s most memorable holes is the 426-yard, par-4 seventh where an uphill tee shot sets up an approach to a green some 60 feet below the center of the fairway. Big hitters can drive through the flat landing area and cut off the distance dramatically, but might face a tricky downhill lie in the process.

A signature hole candidate, #9 is another wild downhiller. This 208-yard par three grabs your attention with a dramatic 100-foot drop from tee to green and a deep-but-narrow putting surface protected by the creek short and left and a perimeter of trees on the right.

Making the turn, you exit the valley briefly and head up to an eclectic set of holes on the second nine. “Some people call this a resort style course,” says Dickson. “The holes seem to get better as you go along.”

Couples has called the 308-yard, par4 13th “classic risk/reward,” but that’s only because he’s one of the few mortals that doesn’t sweat a 260 yard carry over a creek. Safer strategists will play a hybrid off the tee short of the creek and live with a short-but-full wedge or iron shot into the green.

The shortest par 4 on the course is followed by the longest. The 473-yard 14th is one of the most difficult places to be in on the course if you really need a par. A creek crosses the fairway some 320 yards off the tee and other than a fairly tight landing area, this hole is protected only by a deep cross bunker 60 yards short of its huge green.

The 627-yard 15th is all the golf hole you could ever want, from both playability and an aesthetic standpoint. Your (inevitable) third shot must carry a wide inlet of creek that crosses the fairway and borders the right side of the green.

No matter what you’re putting for on this elevated green, take a moment to look back and admire the scenery. This is one of the most naturally serene and picturesque holes in Central Texas.

The 412-yard, par-4 18th is a shot maker’s dream and a nightmare for someone not reliable off the tee. Your tee shot must work its way between

fairway bunkers on either side just to set up a lengthy approach to a smallish, elevated green. Miss the green and your scorecard could take some damage on the way home.

“You definitely need a variety of short game skills out here and you have to work the ball of the tee pretty well, too,” says Dickson. “Number 18’s a great example of that.”

Beyond the 18th green is Twin Creeks’ 10-acre practice area and driving range. Meticulously designed to help members work on every aspect of their game, this area is maintained with the same manicuring as the rest of the course to provide realistic shot values during practice.

French Champagne has long been considered the must-have drink for important celebrations. A symbol of luxury and excess, demand has been growing steadily in the United States. In 2015, according to Wine Institute statistics, imported Champagne outsold domestic sparkling wines for the first time and that trend continued for 2016.

Over the last several decades the large commercial Champagne houses have been the bulk of what US consumers find on the shelves. Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) alone owns Dom Pérignon, Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Krug, Mercier and 18 other notable wine producers. LMVH accounts for around 60 million bottles a year out of a total of 350 million bottles for the whole of Champagne.

Last year, a sommelier friend suggested that instead of going with a big label I should try one of the smaller houses producing some exceptional wines. During a trip to Champagne, she met Mssr. Jean Pierre Marniquet, the owner/vintner of a Champagne house started by the owner’s grandfather in 1929. Their land near the Marne river had been producing wine as far back as the early 1800’s. For the quality of Jean Pierre’s product, she was struck by just how small his operation really was, at one point commenting on the five people she saw and being told that that was pretty much it.

From that trip, she suggested the 1995 Prestige Millesime. Her wine store had obtained a few cases of the special vintage and she thought it was amazing.

The exact composition can vary from year to year,

but the 1995 was 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir. She knew from the maker that it had been on the lees for about 18 years! As our special bottle for New Year’s Eve we enjoyed it tremendously. It was surprisingly bright with citrus and a hint of mushrooms in the nose and prominent green apple on the palate. It had a profusion of tiny bubbles that lasted a for quite a long time. To me, it was perfect.

This year, hoping lightning strikes twice, I picked up another 1995 and a newer Marniquet vintage – the 2005 Brut Millesime. We tasted the 2005 recently with friends (saving the dwindling 1995 for NYE).

The 2005 vintage is earthier than the 1995 with milder acidity. It has a significantly different composition at 50% Meunier, 35% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir. The wine is a pale yellow gold again with lots of tiny bubbles.

The nose is vanilla, brioche (stronger yeast) and toasted sugar aromas. The wine has a very creamy mouth feel and I was happy to again see the green apple quality though less so than the 1995.

We thought the 2005 Millesime was good overall and would likely pair well with oysters or a light poultry dish.

At $55, it’s price point is half of the 1995 vintage, placing it in the range of traditional non-vintage Champagnes.

Marniquet currently produces seven different Champagnes ranging from Brut Prestige (1995) to the nv Brut Traditional.

With 30% of Champagne production not in the hands of the larger houses, there will be plenty to explore in the coming year.

One of the most frequently asked questions from new smokers is about storage.

Many newbies are reluctant to invest in a humidor since they are unsure if they will enjoy the pleasures of cigar smoking. Many others invest in a humidor only to find they are unable to maintain a proper humidity of 68-72%.

For someone that is just starting out, or those with financial limitations, I recommend Tupperware of zip lock bags. The only issue with either of these two methods is having over humidified cigars. This can actually be more damaging to the cigar than having them under humidified. Unless the oils have completely disappeared, a dry cigar can be brought back to life with some patience. An over humidified cigar on the other hand, can rarely be salvaged.

Over-humidification results in split wrappers due to the swelling of the tobacco. Since tupperware and ziplocks are airtight, it is exceptionally important to not raise the humidity too high. I’ve read in cigar books to put a shot glass of water in with the cigars. I couldn’t disagree more. By placing a constant source of 100% humidity in an airtight container, the humidity will rise well above the suggested levels. Instead I recommend one of several alternatives. A wet paper towel that is rung out and only slightly wet is a great alternative. You can also ask your neighborhood cigar store if they can give you a humi-pack that comes in several brands of cigar boxes. My favorite method of maintaining constant humidity though is through preset humi-packs or jars. I prefer the Madeline jars with their refillable silicon jell packets.

You can either use propolene glycol (to prevent the growth of mold) or distilled water. The jar is engineered to maintain a constant 70% humidity. If you prefer, there are also preset packets ranging from 6272%, depending on your taste. Cuban cigars should be smoked around 64%. You can also place cedar strips in with the cigars to enhance their flavor. If you have decided that cigar smoking will become a part of your life, it is now time to buy a humidor. Your needs should dictate the size of your humidor(s). I

recommend starting off with 100 count humidors or more.

This size allows you to age cigars as well as buy several boxes usually at reduced prices. Whatever you decide it is very important that you cureyour humidor before storing cigars. I recommend wiping the interior down for three consecutive days with a damp cloth of either propolene glycol or distilled water. Place in the humidor the source of humidification you will be using and close the lid tightly. This should insure the cedar lining is moist and will not leach the moisture from the cigars. Now is finally the time to add your cigars. There are two schools of thought on keeping or removing the celephane wrapper from the cigars. I take mine off but I separate my cigars from each other, if they are different types, with strips of cedar to prevent the bleeding of taste. Remember, store all cigars/humidors out of direct sunlight and keep the temperature at as close to 70 degrees as you can.

never expected to enjoy target practice at a shooting range. I am a harmonious-minded, yoga enthusiast, that preaches peace‌.so what the heck am I doing in a gun range popping off rounds at a target as if I were back in an old Western movie? I was invited to visit The Range at Austin and check out the newest shooting range in ATX! I have only been shooting a handful of times in dusty outdoor ranges. Upon entering The Range at Austin and seeing their spacious 52,000 square-foot facility, my initial reaction was a combination of intimidation and excitement. My reluctance was quickly eased with the friendliness of the staff that immediately welcomed me.

The Range at Austin is a premier full-service facility offering 5 shooting bays, a large 7,000 square-foot retail section; a gunsmith; a variety of classes; and an elite VIP section. They cater to both experienced and first timers.

There is a front help desk to assist through all the questions and needs anyone could have.

The retail area houses one of the largest selections of guns and accessories in all of Central Texas. The Range is an exclusive dealer of renowned Sig Sauer firearms, a primary choice from law enforcement and military to the educated consumer. The staff will guide you through gun selections to ensure the ideal sale for you. A major benefit of having the combination of a gun store housed within a shooting range is the ability to try before you buy. There are many details for consideration when purchasing a gun from the style and usage, which is clear-cut in the sales descriptions, to the feel of the gun in hand as you shoot, which be experienced. Gun stores do not have the capability of allowing you to test the gun before your purchase. However, The Range at Austin offers this exclusive benefit. In addition to the knowledgeable sales staff that will fully discuss each gun to find the most appropriate fit, there is also a skilled gunsmith located on premises for repairs, modifications, and custom needs.

The VIPS are granted access to a private 25-yard pistol range, as well as a private outdoor shaded zen garden for meditation and stress relief. Opened in February 2017, VIP memberships at The Range at Austin have exceeded the operations original expectations.

After experiencing this customized lounge, it is easy to understand why.

Once you step onto the range your mind is transported once your focus shifts to the gun and target. Shooting is not merely about power, but rather it encompasses aspects of sport and skill that actually can serve as a form of meditation when you focus all attention on the target.

Mindfulness of your body stance is synergized with control over your breath. Lastly, having a respectful knowledge of the equipment can enable the shooter to blend the gun in hand with the end goal of the target for the most successful result.

As my finger slid the trigger back and I felt the kick of the gun in my hand, my body absorbing the impact of fire, a rush of feeling like a bad-ass surged through my body. I could literally hear Dirty Harry’s infamous line “make my day” echoing in my mind. As the paper target became riddled with holes, my ease increased along with my accuracy. Juan, the RSO Manager, guided our shooting experience offering minor adjustments to stance and gun control to hone skills. My background with shooting may have been somewhat limited, but with the level of entertainment and knowledge I gained at The Range, this experience will stay with me as a newly found hobby.

Four of the five shooting bays are open to the public. With one elite bay reserved for their VIP members, 37 rifle-rated shooting lanes with innovative targeting systems are available for use.

There are three 25-yard pistol ranges, appropriately named Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie with the fourth being a 100-yard shotgun bay named Romeo.

Most indoor shooting facilities are outfitted with overhead lighting that can create glare for the shooter, The Range has merged aesthetics with functionality by considering lighting placement to offer anti-glare in the lanes. Range safety officers, known as RSOs, are staffed to heighten your experience by offering guidance on all as-

pects from gun safety to shooting pointers. The RSO Manager, former Army officer Juan Obregon, and his team watch over the shooting bays.

The NRA standard ratio for a range safety officer to shooting lanes is 1:8. The Range adheres to that standard during weekdays and excels during peak times and weekends with a 1:4 ratio; one RSO for every four shooting lanes.

Their high level of responsibility is extended to the environment by recycling all of the casings.

Their state of the art lanes ricochets the bullets with precise mathematical calculation into a reservoir that collects the bullets for recycling. The fact that shooting can be eco-friendly is a wonderful bonus!

The Range offers a variety of educational curriculum with three spacious training rooms to meet all skillsets from beginners to the more advanced marksman. Classes include Concealed Carry Certification, basic education on safety, private instruction sessions, and specialty courses on usage of pistols, rifles, and shotguns. The Director of Training, Jeff Gonzales, a former US Navy SEAL, brings over 25 years of experience in operations and instruction to The Range. His exemplified military background has enlisted him as a top expert in this field. Gonzales oversees the training curriculum and staff, consisting mostly of former military and law enforcement officers. His highly competent team is dedicated to improving your skill and provide patrons with comprehensive training that also offers a keen attention to safety.

Community outreach is a business focus. Their philosophy of safety, skill, and entertainment extends to the public with a goal of comfort and confidence for all that enter their building. They offer ongoing events to develop a culture of camaraderie.

From participating in socials that support Breast Cancer with their Bullets for Boobies event in support of Pink ATX to Sunday Gunday and Coffee; The Range is “on point� with making shooting accessible! They are capable of hosting private parties and events from Girls N Guns Ladies Nights to Bachelor Parties, Corporate Functions, Birthday Parties, Empowering Groups, or any gathering you choose.

Various Tournaments are also hosted at this beautiful facility. If you are wondering whether alcoholic beverages will be allowed at your event inside of a gun range, the answer is YES. The Range at Austin has taken special consideration into safety with the allowance of alcohol on the premises. Each participant in an event is outfitted with a wristband that permits you in the shooting bays. All alcohol is kept in the lounge area with a bartender. Once you enter the bar area for a drink, your wristband is cut, prohibiting any access to the shooting bays, where the guns are located. You are welcome to enjoy the magnificent lounge areas for the remainder of the party.
