And this connectivity can only happen by stitching together isolated ‘islands of nature’ to create functional ecological corridors. The ECA is adopting Parks Canada’s Ecological Corridor principles, and will be seeking financial support from the Federal Ecological Corridors program.

Four Prime Kilometers – above all, we need to protect the brow of our escarpment. Saving the Castle Glen and Talisman properties from megadevelopment are priorities. The proposed Castle Glen development (1,600 homes, golf courses, hotels and retail commercial space) would destroy almost three kilometers of prime escarpment land. The Talisman development would destroy the nearly 1km section along the escarpment brow.

Countless Species at Risk Through field studies with experts, the ECA’s natural heritage work is focused on saving our precious ecosystems. To date, we are already tracking over 16 threatened and endangered species in the Castle Glen area, and would like to expand this surveillance region. Did you know? The escarpment is located at the headwaters to some of the last remaining viable cold water fisheries in Georgian Bay, and to the feeding of clean, cold water into the critical intact wetlands along the shores of Nottawasaga (Georgian) Bay.

Unrelenting Development Pressure – While Castle Glen and Talisman represent highly visible areas of opposition, the ECA is not an anti-development organization. We are trying

Just How Protected is The Niagara Escarpment? – Several major systemic issues keep us awake at night at the ECA: • The Niagara Escarpment, just like Ontario’s Greenbelt which houses it, is protected by an “Act” – a piece of paper that can be changed at any time. • The role and effectiveness of the Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC) in overseeing the protection of the escarpment has long been questioned, and was the subject of a scathing 2022 Auditor General report. • Our Niagara Escarpment UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation doesn’t offer any real protection against inappropriate development.

Not A Solution to Our Housing Crisis – the ECA fully supports the need to address our many housing challenges, in particular with respect to attainable housing. However, we don’t believe in false trade-offs between housing and the environment. And if that weren’t enough, the entranceway is also spacious enough to act as a stage. Yes, a stage. Diana and Collin regularly host evenings with musicians and storytellers through their notfor-profit companies, Sideroad Sounds and Georgian Bay Story Slam, where contestants compete for a prize to see who can tell the best true tale in 10 minutes without notes. All proceeds go to the artists. “Both are just a bit of a passion project for the love of music and storytelling,” says Diana. Guests can gather around in the adjoining, light-filled living and dining room and kitchen to watch.

The house, then, was designed around creating a space that “is conducive to gathering people,” says Diana. And it’s not just for the performances that friends flock to their nest. Diana and Collin both love to cook and entertain, especially with food they grow themselves in their vegetable garden. And soon they will be able to make preserves from the fruit trees and raspberry canes they planted. “When you get older, you figure out what is important to you, all the things you love. The hobbies, the music,” Diana says. And music is definitely the focus in this home. Not only does the entrance hall do double-duty for entertainers, but the couple also created a second “stage” in the upstairs rec room that has two stools, two mics, and a wall of various types of guitars. The two use it to play their music together, and

White walls give the home a light, airy feel. Colour is used sparingly, but richly. The kitchen cupboards, for example, are a green that seem to echo the colour of trees outside the windows. if they have a small gathering, everyone crowds around that upstairs performance area. They also have a very cozy music room, built just off the living area. It holds a comfy Enzo-style tub chair to sit and listen to the music from an old fashioned analog stereo system that once belonged to Collin’s father, and a collection of vinyl records and CDs. Downstairs is all about analog, while the upstairs music area is about digital, explains Collin. The goal for this couple, who have previously lived in Victorian, Arts and Crafts and eco-style houses, was to create a home that is Scandinavian, with a “barn feel,” says Diana. garage may seem like an inauspicious place to set up a gallery. But when you step into David Spector’s garage in Wasaga Beach, you had better be prepared for the breathtaking beauty of what might be one of the largest collections of spectacular, brightly painted Indigenous art works in all of Canada.

That garage—or “art barn,” as Spector refers to it—is Shorelane Arts, a gallery built around a for-sale collection Spector has been buying and building since the ‘90s. Spector learned about collecting Indigenous art and artifacts at an early age. From the age of five to 12, he lived overseas in West Africa and Jamaica where his father, a professor, worked for the Canadian International Development Agency. His father became a collector of Indigenous

One of the artists who stayed with him was the late Jay Bell Redbird, who worked in the film industry in Toronto and sold works to Hollywood actors, including Russell Crowe, Danny DeVito and Meg Ryan. The style of art Spector has collected is known as Woodland Art. Best exemplified by the works of the late Norval Morrisseau, an Ojibway artist from northern Ontario, Woodland Art explores spirituality through the relationships between people, animals and nature. “And this is what we’re talking about when

we’re talking about the environment,” Spector says. He says the art has a lot to teach about what Canada was like before settlers came. “The fact is we have Indigenous peoples in Canada, their art is completely unique, and we can learn a lot.” Part of Spector’s collection is made up of works by Norval Morrisseau’s son, Christian. Spector also carries works from artists such as Peter Bighetty, Richard Bedwash, Paul Kohoko, Brian Marion, Frank Poison, Redbird, Steven Snake and Roy Thomas. “These are not brand-new paintings,” he explains. They were painted from 1995 to 2001. And the names of those artists are becoming more and more recognized. Indeed, the artists Norval Morrisseau, Daphne Odjig, Alex Janvier, Jackson Beardy, Eddy Cobiness, Carl Ray and Joseph Sanchez are now collectively known as the Indigenous Group of Seven. Indigenous art may be a good investment, as Spector points out. But oh, to have it hanging on the wall of your home. Woodland Art’s characteristically vivid colours could brighten the most dismal of winter days. Spector’s home, next to the property where he has created the gallery, is awash in gorgeous paintings by artists such as Noval Morrisseau, Nori Peter, Clifford Maracle, and many more. He has no plans to sell those. But his garage gallery is overflowing with beautifully framed paintings hanging on the walls and stacked upright on the floor. When the art is not hanging in Spector’s gallery, it is touring in showings in the area from the Collingwood Public Library to Wasaga Beach’s Stonebridge Town Centre to the RecPlex Community Centre. Canada, says Spector, “is such a big country. There’s not much history here,” he says, except for that of Indigenous peoples. And this is their spectacular art.

I GOT SOBER IN 2010, and in those early years, my decision to not drink was often met with puzzled glares, or utter disbelief. “You stopped drinking? But WHY?” Friends and strangers alike were curious. Some assumed I’d forever banished myself to the Land of No Fun. But those of us who’ve made the switch know that life

without alcohol—without hangovers, or next-morning regrets—is infinitely better. The transformation is profound. After 30 days of abstinence—the trial period health experts recommend to break a habit and observe changes—dramatic lifestyle shifts begin to take shape. People often describe a fog that lifts, and when

it does, a newfound clarity. No longer using a numbing substance, senses are heightened, bodies start to feel better. While still countercultural, sobriety is more widely accepted now than a decade ago, and in the past three to five years, the non-alcoholic category has seen a surge of growth. “I can’t drink how I used to, and I know a lot of people feel the same way,” says Christina Buttarazzi, founder of Collingwood’s Paradox So/ Bar Lounge, a travelling zero-proof pop-up with a mission to embrace “sober, sober-ish, and sober curious living.” Paradox So/Bar launched in late summer with a rowdy dance party. The well-attended sober event confirmed that there is a strong and growing community who desire an alternative offering. Buttarazzi has been partnering with local events, but her ultimate vision is to open a brick-and-mortar space dedicated to creative and high-quality non-alcoholic drinks. She’s certain the region is ready for a sober bar. “Collingwood is a health-conscious community, a very active community. After a bike ride or a ski run, people want to cool down with a drink for an après, but not necessarily put alcohol in their body after they’ve done all that hard work,” says Buttarazzi. Buttarazzi doesn’t fully abstain from drinking, or consider herself to be sober, but she also can’t remember the last time she had a drink, and she’s noticed many of her peers have also left alcohol behind. “There’s been an increase in the number of reasons that people don’t drink and also an

increase in how much people are spending on non-alcoholic beverages. A few years ago, you may have assumed that someone who isn’t drinking had a problem with alcohol. But everyone I’ve talked to now has a different reason. Whether it’s for a cleanse or for clarity, people just feel better. I can’t speak to the science behind it but I just know that you feel better when it’s not in your body.” The science of alcohol, and how it affects our bodies, is something that Ann Dowsett Johnston can speak to. The bestselling author (who grew up on Georgian Bay in a cottage built by her grandfather and Group of Seven painter A.Y Jackson) has been sounding the alarm on the health impacts of alcohol since she first published Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol 10 years ago. “The fact that 15 percent of breast cancer cases are attributed in full to alcohol—we didn’t accept that then, maybe we’re beginning to,” says Johnston. Change is not something that humans embrace easily. Remember when no one wore seatbelts? When half the guests at a restaurant smoked? It took a long time for people to accept the fact that cigarette smoking caused lung cancer— even after it was stamped in large bold ink on the back of every pack. Johnston sees parallels

between the tobacco and alcohol industries. “The science is robust, but the gap between what we know and what we don’t do is enormous,” warns Johnston, adding that science isn’t enough to inspire significant change. “You have to push on three levers to change public consumption: you have to push on marketing, you have to push on prices, and you have to push on availability, and we haven’t pushed on any of those.”
