RUMROLL, PLEASE! The firstever Southern Georgian Bay sex survey results are in and it might shock you to find out that we are, in fact...shocking. Ok, fine, perhaps not quite shocking, but definitely surprising. Though no place around here is winning the title of kinkiest town in Canada (that honour actually goes to Lions Bay, B.C.), few would guess that behind the closed bedroom doors of our quaint little ski communities,

you’d find a variety of unexpected scenarios.

Our survey revealed that some of us are struggling with unfulfilling sex lives, while others have never been more sexually confident and adventurous. As well, a number of us are into some eyebrow-raising activities that you won’t find listed among the many attractions our region has to offer. We may be an overwhelmingly homogeneous population in many ways, but our sexual practices and appetites are refreshingly diverse.

Of course, surveys have their limitations. The

results only reflect how honest people are willing to be and how well they actually know themselves. That being said, the several hundred survey participants provided a fairly good idea of this community’s sexual wellbeing.

And overall, we’re doing well. For instance, we actually rank slightly above the Canadian average (59%) with respect to how happy we are with our sex lives (63%). Not shabby. And for the rest of us in a slump, sex therapist Lisa Pelletier has some insight and ideas to help us bring the sexy back.

Few sensations are as pleasing as the sun on your skin while you nap on the beach on a hot summer day. But in the dead of winter? A good sweat session in a sauna might do the trick.

When you step into a sauna, it’s like being enveloped in a warm, sunny hug. Body temperature rises, heart rate soars, blood vessels begin to dilate. Yes, it’s uncomfortable at first. But sit with it for a minute. Feel the heat sink into your bones, the smell of cedar filling your nostrils as beads of sweat roll down your skin. An incredible feeling of wellbeing washes over you.

When you exit, you feel cleansed and as light as air. Invigorated. Refreshed. Energetic. Focused. Increasingly, science is telling us the post-sauna glow is more than just a healthy feeling. Sweating helps eliminate toxins from the body. Increasing body temperature elevates heart rate and, in turn, stimulates circulation, which has a follow-on effect for your heart, blood pressure, joints, skin and immune system. So, it’s no surprise that sauna culture’s documented benefits include everything from detoxification to improved blood circulation, pain and stress reduction, skin rejuvenation and even better sleep.

As people become more mindful about their health and wellbeing, saunas are surging in popularity as a way to tap into these benefits. And new technologies and businesses are giving us appealing novel ways to introduce this ancient ritual to our daily lives, in the home and elsewhere.

A cold plunge following a sauna is generally recommended. This beautiful architectural sauna rests just above Georgian Bay for that purpose.

Just ask Rodney Palmer, founder of SaunaRay, a Collingwood-based company that hand-builds and installs infrared saunas in commercial and residential spaces.

A former CTV foreign correspondent, Palmer and his family spent several years abroad, often in countries that had issues with pollution and low air quality. Over the years, his wife became increasingly ill, but no doctor could pinpoint why or offer a way to fix it, until one prescribed a sauna.

Within weeks, she felt better.

Palmer has always had an interest in heat therapy, but when he discovered the newer technology of infrared energy—to gently heat the body directly, instead of super heating the surrounding air—he became passionate about the benefits of sweating in a safe and contained space and designed the first medical-grade sauna.

“Because our bodies are accustomed to absorb the sun’s warmth, the infrared heat penetrates the outer layer of our skin, triggering sweat and warming the soft connective tissues deep within instead of overheating our lungs and core temperature,” Palmer explains.

And while the technology behind infrared saunas isn’t new, the buzz around them is growing. Made from Ontario basswood harvested outside Collingwood and hand-finished in beeswax, SaunaRay’s unique ceramic elements are designed to make it feel like you are lying on the beach.

Palmer has since outfitted the Ottawa Senators physiotherapy room, Scandinave Spa, countless fire halls across the country and the homes of celebrities Cindy Crawford and Michael Douglas.

The sauna not only became his livelihood, but his way of life. Palmer aims to go into the sauna every night for an hour before bed. “To me, it’s quiet time,” he says. “It’s a time to reflect on the day and be thankful. It makes me feel happy and calm, and I sleep like a baby.”

Plus, he and his wife have become fierce advocates of the health benefits of infrared heat. “It’s taken a few years but the hard science is finally trickling down to the messengers and reaching the mainstream,” he says. “This is the science that is advising people to sweat daily or every other day. Not to mention this technique has been used for thousands of years by almost every culture on earth.”

And it’s not just the design of the home that brings people together. There are the meals. The stove is a six-burner, for that reason. The dining table seats 10.

Besides, they loved their property, which is near Currie’s Farm Market.

“We are five minutes to (downtown) Collingwood and five minutes to OslerBrook Golf and Country Club,” says Mike.

As well, their home is on a one-acre lot that is screened by mature trees on the front, back and sides. “This was perfect. It’s tucked away and private,” says Mike.

So, Andrea simply Googled architects and found Steve Hamelin Design Studio in downtown Collingwood. “We met, we clicked, and we knew we would have a good relationship,” says Andrea of their first meeting with Hamelin.

And finding a builder was a cinch. Mike and Andrea had been working with Jeff Becker of Redwood Homes in Collingwood since they first bought their vacation property. He had done renovations on their board and batten home.

Nor did they have to seek out a designer. Instead, they turned to Karen Kayne, of Karen Kayne Design in Toronto, who worked with Andrea and Mike for 15 years on their Toronto home.

And when it came to landscaping, they looked to Fran Moore, of Moore Outdoor Design in Clearview Township and Rock Solid Landscapes in Flesherton.

“Pretty much all the trades are local,” says Andrea. “That was important.”

The result? Everything came together smoothly. The house was ready for move-in only six weeks after it was supposed to be, says Mike.

Once their team was in place, they decided what was important.

“Minimal upkeep,” was number one, says Mike.

“And it was important to use every part of the house,” says Andrea. “It had to be functional, everywhere.”

The couple also wanted to merge furnishings from their chalet and their home in Toronto, so Karen Kayne worked with them on that goal.

“The cost of furniture is exorbitant,” says Andrea. So, the couple outfitted their twins’ bedrooms with wooden bureaus from their Toronto home that they simply repainted white.

They even repurposed items, such as sliding

glass doors from the old chalet that were installed in the side of the garage and off their entertainment room, and the wrought iron fence that used to border the swimming pool was moved to the perimeter of their property when they opened their backyard space.

Not that they didn’t go all-out on the home. They sandblasted the old chocolate brown paint off the logs in the cabin at the front of their new home, to make it brighter and lighter.

And of course, they built a brand new, bright and airy home complete with an outdoor “spa” area and soaring two-storey ceilings in the living room.

When you first enter the main doors, you face a long hall with a nook in it that was designed to display a gorgeous landscape by Debra Lynn Carroll of Loft Gallery in Thornbury. Below it is a wooden beam built into the wall that a friend of the Wolffs made as a gift.

Off to the right, a multi-purpose mudroom hides the inner workings of the home—a furnace, electrical panels and the like—behind woodslatted doors that were designed by Kayne. In

Collingwood’s Junior A Blues stirs team rivalries and a community’s love of the game.

It’s a scenario that was bound to stir the souls of hockey fans in Collingwood. The Collingwood Blues were the top team in their division and the visiting Georgetown Raiders were riding high on an extended winning streak. The Junior A hockey matchup was the biggest ticket in town and the game would take place on a Friday night at Collingwood’s very

own ice palace, the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena. Anchored in the heart of downtown, the Eddie Bush was built on the heels of the Second World War. Its riveted steel girders and steeply sloped concrete steps give it the overall ambiance of a mini Maple Leaf Gardens. Recently renovated, there are nearly a thousand seats, and there’s room for more people along the back railings where decades of

blood, sweat and tears are buried under layers of enamel paint. A large, modern scoreboard hanging over centre ice gives the arena a big-league feel.

This is home turf for the Collingwood Blues and the grassroots support for the hockey team is second-to-none in the league, according to Blues head coach Andrew Campoli.

once earlier in the season, but the Raiders came prepared to weather the storm.

“We want to play with the top teams and keep moving up, so this is a good test to see where we are at,” said Raiders head coach Shawn Snider. The Raiders centre, Andrew Della Rovere, hoped to take the game from Collingwood.

“It would show the guys in the league that we are a contender in our division,” Della Rovere said.

It was standing room only at the Eddie Bush as the two teams faced off. The players on both sides carry the hopes and aspirations of their

communities on their shoulders. Big games like this are also an opportunity for players to prove themselves on an individual basis as they work towards a college scholarship or a career in the big leagues. The Blues aim their development efforts toward American universities.

“What our program focuses on is pushing guys to the NCAA because it allows them to play four years of school and get an education and then continue their career,” says head coach Campoli.

Della Rovere, Brandon Kakei, Nathan Naves and Johnathan Mead. The Blues were suddenly down 5-0. The hometown crowd fell quiet and Collingwood’s coach needed to do something.

“It’s about getting them fired up, it’s about getting them on the edge and playing with a bit more consistency and let’s call it grit and determination,” Campoli later explained.

Campoli said the Blues weren’t being beaten on systems—it was work ethic—so he did his best to stir the team’s pot of emotions. Blues captain Cameron Garvey led the charge, scoring in the third period. Mark McIntosh and Aiden Dooley also scored, but the Blues ran out of time to catch up.

It was the first loss at home and only the third loss of the season but it struck a nerve with the Blues. Fortunately, there’s plenty of hockey left

in the season and the Blues will get a chance for redemption against the Raiders on Friday, March 3.

“Every game is important but that one is going to be circled on the calendar,” Campoli said. “They got the best of us early on in the game. For us, we like to fight back and push back, so we will have that one circled come March.”

That game is also scheduled at the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena. Win or lose, hockey night in Collingwood is always entertaining, says Terry Geddes, board chair of the Blues.

“It’s just a really fun place to be on a Friday night or a Saturday afternoon. You won’t find anything better.”

The Blues will get a chance for redemption against the Raiders on Friday, March 3.

The gnarly old tree, its branches twisted and bare, wages an epic battle of wills against an unrelenting wind. Its solitary struggle is set upon a stark canvas of sepia-toned sky and snow.

In this photograph, less is more.

And that’s the signature goal of Peter Dušek, an award-winning photographer who creates art through the lens of his camera. His artistic tagline is, “As little as possible, as much as necessary.”

The lone stunted tree is the subject of one of

his most successful pieces, which helped launch his trajectory as an artist. Called the Cheltenham Badlands, the photograph was taken just north of Brampton in the dead of winter and is the focal point of an exhibition called “Tranquility.”

“What I use the snow for, usually, is to be able to start with a clean white canvas, like a painter would,” says Dušek. “Then I look for objects to place on it, like a painter would draw on a blank canvas. I also look for poetic trees, which are really hard to find.”

A towering figure with a gentle demeanor, Dušek, 55, moved to Canada from Slovakia when he was seven. He now resides in Hockley Valley and operates his own gallery in Creemore.

He is an unlikely artist, having started his first career in computer programming and development armed with a math degree. However, after 20 years in that field, he felt that any creativity in programming had been replaced by a business environment of stringent rules and testing.

Award-winning photographer Peter Dušek launched an artistic career with a combination of nerve, luck and timing— and poetic photographs that carry a message for living.

That’s when he looked for another creative outlet and decided to try photography. Over the years, he would ride his trail bike or go on motorcycle and car excursions to explore the countryside with his Canon camera.

As his style developed, he found that it was heavily influenced by his study in his early 20s of Eastern philosophies that taught such concepts as simplicity, tranquility and contemplation.

“I’d also been studying famous world-level top photographers and I kind of discovered a style that I fell in love with, which was black and white. I had taken colour photographs, but they didn’t work well, and suddenly I realized that if I made them black and white, they suddenly made sense,” Dušek says.

While his career transition took place over several years, his breakthrough as a successful artist was a combination of nerve, luck and timing.

He had joined a local art group near Orangeville, called Headwaters Arts, and his work was displayed in a few art shows in the area. However, a chance encounter with a prominent Toronto gallery owner in 2015 proved to be the catalyst for his new career.

While on a photo assignment in downtown Toronto, he couldn’t find the location of his subject, so he entered the nearby Abbozzo Gallery to ask for directions and struck up a conversation with the gallery owner.

“On the way out, I kind of had this moment of boldness and asked if I could take her out to lunch to talk about how I could start expanding my art into the Toronto area, and she agreed to that,” he recalls. “A few weeks later, we had the lunch and I showed her my portfolio, not really expecting anything, and then a month later she called back and offered me a solo exhibition.”
