Barb left behind a thriving arts and culture community, which she helped build and promote. In 1974 she founded the Blue Mountain Arts Council, later absorbed into the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts. She also founded Theatre Collingwood, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala event honouring Barb. She was an ardent supporter of Georgian College and was involved in bringing a Georgian campus to Collingwood. We at On The Bay had the great fortune of many dealings with Barb in the past 11 years since the magazine’s inception, and we were always struck by her passion, her gentility and her dogged determination to make Southern Georgian Bay a place we could all proudly call home. Barb would have been thrilled that two of our 2015 Grassroots Heroes have embraced arts and culture in our region with her signature enthusiasm: Andrea Rinaldo, a Collingwood painter who is helping other local artists gain recognition through events such as the Collingwood Art Crawl and Art Battle; and Paul Ruppel, who founded Creemore’s Mad & Noisy Gallery and was instrumental in building the town’s social and cultural hub, the Station on the Green. Our other Grassroots Heroes are also keeping Barb’s legacy alive through their tireless community involvement. Deb Keep, founder of Elephant Thoughts, is educating children locally and around the world, regardless of their social or economic conditions. Don Kerr is preserving a precious local wetland that provides a habitat to a diversity of birds, fish and plants, including some that are endangered or threatened. Ian Sinclair is empowering women and children through his involvement with My Friend’s House, including raising much-

The Heroes
Amongst Us Nine years ago, we published our very first Salute to Grassroots Heroes in On The Bay. As with so many great ideas,
it was born out of necessity – another article fell through at the last minute and we needed to find something to replace it that would be equally compelling for our readers. We quickly activated our team of professional writers to each write a profile of a local person who had made a difference in our communities, across our region and in all areas of influence, from arts and culture to the environment, healthcare to education, agriculture to tourism. The resulting stories were so well received, we decided to make Grassroots Heroes an annual tribute. This year, we had another first: the first time one of our chosen Grassroots Heroes passed away before we could interview or photograph her. After asking for nominees on our Facebook page and through our e-newsletter and website, we received several nominations to feature Barbara Weider as one of our 2015 Grassroots Heroes. Barb was included in our selection of heroes to be honoured in this issue. We finalized our selections on September 15; Barb sadly passed away on September 20. Since we were unable to include her in our profiles, I would like to take a moment here to salute her as the ultimate Grassroots Hero who gave of her time, talents and tenacity to make Southern Georgian Bay a better place to live, work and play.

Barb would have been in good company among these five extraordinary people, all of whom, as she did, embody the idea that the quality of our lives is determined by the quality of our contribution. Barb would have also enjoyed reading Emily Worts’ article about the past, present and future of our ski hills and clubs in Southern Georgian Bay; her father-in-law, Jozo Weider, built Blue Mountain Resort with his own two hands (quite literally), his boundless energy and his flair for innovation. Jozo started it all; he gave us a place where we can exercise our bodies. His daughter-in-law made sure it became a place where we can also exercise our minds and our creative hearts. And so, it is with pleasure that I announce another first for On The Bay: we hereby dedicate this year’s Salute to our Grassroots Heroes to the inimitable Barb Weider. It also sparked a great conversation between cyclists and residents, proving that we need to continue developing our local infrastructure, safety and education messaging, as well as our communication and collaboration with local partners. The feedback we received from your articles was tremendous and your writer’s accurate portrayal of the current cycling landscape was refreshing and greatly appreciated. The series was very well received at the County level, which will only help improve our area in the future. However, it is the diverse range of passionate leaders in the community that are building on this foundation, many of whom got to tell their stories in the last issue. Perhaps the greatest challenge and opportunity for the region’s booming cycle-tourism industry is safety. You were able to tackle that issue very effectively and provided a balanced perspective – both cyclists and motorists need to play their part. Why do drivers hate cyclists? As an enthusiast I was very pleased to see so much exposure given to cycling in the fall issue of On The Bay, and as a business owner I was honoured to be featured to highlight the local people involved in this growing industry. It is clear that cycling is here to stay and bringing a substantial amount of tourism dollars to this area. I have received a lot of positive feedback on
these articles and I believe our area has potential to be one of the top cycling destinations in Ontario. Unfortunately I have also received some pointedly negative feedback and the issue of cyclists vs. drivers still remains a deadly problem and is very disconcerting. Why do some drivers hate cyclists? This issue is not just a local one; it’s worldwide and creates such strong viewpoints that CBC hosted a

radio show on it last month. The On The Bay Facebook post on “Sharing the Road” generated a flurry of negative comments from drivers, which was deeply disturbing. How do we defuse this potential time-bomb? In order to co-exist on our local roads safely we need more awareness of the rules of the road on both sides. Yes, there are cyclists on our roads disobeying the laws and I realize that is very frustrating for drivers. These cyclists should be ticketed and fined for infractions of the Highway Traffic Act. However, there seems to be a real anti-cycling group of aggressive drivers out there not only passing when there is oncoming traffic, but also taking huge risks and “threading the needle” every weekend on our local roads. Please educate yourself and remember the new one-metre rule. Cyclists are considered vehicles under the HTA (Highway Traffic Act) and allowed to use the whole lane. We are also drivers and pay the same taxes as everyone else. We should not be put at risk for leading a healthy lifestyle and contributing to our local economy. When I bolted from the insurance company in the city nearly 30 years ago, the idea of a home office was a fairly novel concept. People had studies and dens in their homes, but employers snorted at the notion you might do all of your work from there. Wouldn’t you spend all day in your pyjamas watching General Hospital? When my friends heard I was moving north of Highway 7 to a farm to write, they worried my brain would atrophy without the stimulation of “people friction” and I would become unproductive. I assured them that if my brain didn’t have to think about life insurance ever again, it would probably thrive. Besides, I argued, once you took the commuting and all those pointless meetings and martini lunches out of your day, you gained a seven-hour time advantage over everyone else. “Yes,” they said. “I suppose you would have lots of time to think and write out there.” I wasn’t sure about that. I had tried writing a novel once before and I knew a cabin in the woods in winter was a tricky place to concentrate on anything but survival. In 1974, I dropped out of school two credits shy of an economics degree and took the train north to the cabin thinking the great silence of the Canadian forest would help me think long uninterrupted thoughts and commit them to paper by the light of a candle while the wind sculpted snowdrifts around the house. Omar Sharif did this very well in the movie Doctor Zhivago. He scribbled feverishly with a pen and inkwell in front of the fireplace late at night while Julie Christie slept and the wolves howled in the moonlit field in front of the old chateau. There was a lot of crumpled paper on the floor, the theme music would falter, and you could see this was all pretty difficult for him. But then Julie Christie would appear at his shoulder in a lace nightgown with a mug of tea and the music would pick up again, and you just knew something really great was going to happen. My log cabin had an open fireplace that pulled every cubic foot of warm air out of the house and sent it straight up the chimney. The drafts came in

through cracks in the logs, making the cobwebs float up and hang on the air. I chopped wood and stoked the fire until the couch finally thawed out. Then cluster flies emerged from the logs in biblical numbers and buzzed around the lampshades. By the time I had finished swatting flies and chopping more wood, I was very hungry. The cycle of eating, chopping, napping, chopping, swatting, picking flies out of the soup, and scanning the horizon for human company took up quite a bit of a writer’s working day. After two weeks of this, I called a friend. We met at the airport and flew to a warm beach in Fort Lauderdale. I tried writing at the hotel bar, but that didn’t work either. The conclusion I came to was that writing in a cabin in the woods or anywhere else is not a good idea unless Julie Christie is there and thinks you are adorable. And so I took a job at the local paper and waited for her to show up. Thirteen years later, she did. After a whirlwind courtship we got married, and straightaway packed up the apartment to head north in pursuit of that stubborn fantasy of a writer’s retreat. That was 27 winters ago and we are still here in our little farmhouse. People friction followed us, because we have neighbours. Add the friction of children, animals, machinery, appliances and weather, and you have a recipe for endless distraction. E.B. White once wrote that “just to live in New England in winter is a full-time job.” He lay awake in the mornings marshalling the problems and projects of the day, none of which included sitting at the typewriter. He chopped wood, fed chickens, thawed pipes and plotted the murder of a fox that had been raiding his henhouse. If he ever got time to sit at his desk, it was often just to flip through seed and poultry catalogues and dream of gentle south winds and spring. I have a lot of days like that. Somehow it all works and that may be because I know that, to be of any use, a writer must learn to live in the world, not retreat from it. ❧

Racing Against Domestic Violence Ian Sinclair has always thrown himself wholeheartedly into every pursuit. He didn’t just start a business – he built five businesses into national and international success stories. He didn’t just take up mountain biking – he built 10 kilometres of professionally designed single-track trails on his Gibraltar property. So when his own family was touched by domestic abuse, in characteristic entrepreneurial style, Sinclair got busy building. “Our eldest daughter, Ashley, was in an abusive relationship. It empowered Ashley to see the courage of [other women who have come through domestic abuse], and we knew we had to get involved.” Combining his passion for mountain biking with his newfound mission to help women escape domestic violence, in 2013 Sinclair launched 6 Hours of Gibraltar – a mountain bike race on his own trails that has since raised over $175,000 for My Friend’s House women’s shelter in Collingwood. The 2015 event attracted 170 riders, who ride for six hours straight in a team relay format, after collecting pledges and paying an entrance fee – all of which goes to support My Friend’s House. Sinclair says the key to the event’s wild success is understanding that both élite and recreational riders are looking for a professional-level race and an enjoyable day on the trails. By giving the riders what they want with the added bonus of helping a great cause, everybody wins. “I’m an old pedlar, and I think the charity business is the toughest business I’ve ever been in. There’s no demand for the product; demand must be created, and the only way to create it is one-on-one selling with a solid value proposition.” Not content to stop at raising funds, Sinclair wants to help raise the profile of My Friend’s House in the community and raise awareness about domestic violence, which affects one in four women. “Ultimately I want to put My Friend’s House and other shelters out of business; empower women and children and bring an end to this once and for all. We’re all about having fun at 6 Hours of Gibraltar, but it boils down to self-respect, respect for the female gender, respect for moms and respect for children. Educating Our Children Deb Keep was looking for something to do, in between writing grant proposals for any charity that asked, getting a local animal shelter built, forming her own charitable foundation and sitting on the boards of the Georgian Triangle Humane Society, the United Way and My Friend’s House. So, in 2002, the volunteer dynamo parlayed her chemistry degree, her MBA and her 16 years in the corporate world into a unique, entrepreneurial, science-based global teaching charity based right here in Southern Georgian Bay. To reflect her goal of “hands-on, minds-on” learning with an environmental focus, she named the new endeavour Elephant Thoughts (ET). “Elephant Thoughts is a children’s educational charity that works to provide quality education regardless of social, geographic or economic boundaries,” she explains. “A lot of our programs are science-based, fun, engaging and entertaining. It’s all about getting kids interested in science and not being afraid of it.” Today, Elephant Thoughts runs professional day camps, March Break and summer camps, and after school programs at its facility in Collingwood, which is part interactive school, part zoo and part educational store. There is also a ‘Mentoring for Success’ program that helps motivate struggling kids to stay in school. The camps and educational programs generate revenue from those who can afford them, to offset the cost for those who can’t. “Fifty percent of kids attend at no expense,” notes Keep. Through the sale of educational programs and toys, Elephant Thoughts also funds its work with schools in 70 First Nations and Inuit communities across Canada (for which it won two Fraser Institute Awards for Excellence in the Delivery of Education), and in third-world countries like Nicaragua, Tanzania, Nepal and India. In all, Elephant Thoughts provides $2.5 million in programs per year and employs over 50 people, most of them teachers. As she was building Elephant Thoughts, Keep was also a key member of the Georgian Triangle Humane Society’s capital campaign to build a local animal shelter. Thanks in part to her untiring efforts, the state-of-the-art, $1.2-million shelter opened its doors in 2010 and is today a model facility for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA). And her own charitable foundation, Keep Family Foundation, has contributed funds to local charities including Theatre Collingwood, Big Brothers Big Sisters and My Friend’s House. “I’m not a hero,” she demurs. “All I do is give some time, some money, some energy to enable people to do great things. Protecting Our Environment Don Kerr has a motto: “don’t tell me it can’t be done; tell me what has to change to make it happen.” It’s a maxim that has served him well in his 10-year crusade to preserve and protect the Silver Creek Wetland, which he describes as “one of the largest, if not the largest, coastal wetland on southern Georgian Bay.” Today, the wetland’s future is all but assured, thanks to a change Kerr was instrumental in bringing about. Covering an area of approximately 166 hectares at its mouth, this Provincially Significant Coastal Wetland stretches along the Nottawasaga Bay shoreline in Collingwood and The Blue Mountains, and plays a vital role as habitat and spawning ground for a diverse variety of birds, fish and plant species, including some that are endangered or threatened. When Kerr joined the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust Foundation shortly after moving to Collingwood in 2003, the Silver Creek Wetland was already a key issue. Most of the wetland is privately owned, and was in danger of being lost to development. Kerr envisioned and initiated the Silver Creek Vision Project, a strategy for transferring as much as possible of the wetland out of private hands and managing the properties as one unit. He played a key role in securing agreement from both the Collingwood and Blue Mountains

councils, and the boards of the Grey Sauble and Nottawasaga Valley Conservation authorities and Niagara Escarpment Commission to adopt this approach. “When a developer wants to develop something near the wetland, his properties in the wetland are ceded to the town. We have a commitment for about 40 per cent of the total wetland to be ceded, and we are awaiting a final agreement that would bring the total to about 70 per cent.” For his work on the Silver Creek Vision Project, Kerr received the Ian Shenstone Fraser Conservation Award presented by Ontario Nature. But awards and recognition pale in comparison to the satisfaction of knowing that the wetland – and its resident flora and fauna – will survive in perpetuity. “I consider this the most important thing I’ve done,” says Kerr. “There’s a strong feeling of appreciation to know that it will continue to be there, knowing that there’s a home for the species that depend on it. Promoting Arts & Artists Andrea Rinaldo creates beautiful art, but her true talent lies in creating showcases where other local artists can gain recognition for their work. An abstract painter whose own work is shown in Toronto and internationally, Rinaldo chalks up hundreds of hours each year singlehandedly producing the Collingwood Art Crawl, a self-guided free walking tour of downtown venues where area artists can exhibit their art. The first Art Crawl in 2013 attracted about 300 people to view and listen to the work of 50 artists and five musicians in eight different venues. This year, there were 27 venues and five events, with over 200 artists and 20 musicians represented and over 1,000 people taking the tour. Rinaldo also brought the Art Battle to Collingwood. In this live event held in cities across Canada, 12 local artists compete against each other in front of an audience to create a “masterpiece” within 20 minutes. The audience votes for the winner, and each of the art pieces goes up for auction. The winner of the Collingwood Art Battle goes on to compete at the regional level on the way to the Canadian championships. For the artists, it’s a chance to grandstand a little. For the audience, “it’s a great

opportunity to see the process, which they never get to see; they usually see the end product but never the process.” A portion of the ticket price goes to fund post-secondary art bursaries for area high school students. Why would a successful artist spend so much time and effort to help other artists? For Rinaldo, it’s all about community – bringing together the local community of artists and the wider community of art lovers. It’s also about inclusion. “Toronto has become so out of touch with being able to provide a working and living environment for artists. We have a thriving artistic community here with a lot of great venues and a four-season lifestyle, so a lot of artists have decided to come into this community. Therefore, we have a lot of young artists and emerging artists who cannot afford to go into shows or they don’t have enough body of work to go into a show. The Art Crawl has provided them an opportunity to show their work. I do not exclude anybody. Building a Community Identity Paul Ruppel moved to Creemore in 1994, when it was known primarily for its beer and quaint shops. Ruppel was already involved with the Purple Hills Arts & Heritage Society, where he chaired the local artists’ studio tour for 10 years, when local booster the late Jim Vandewater approached him with a proposition. “He came to me and said, ‘I’m building a building on the main street and I don’t want a restaurant, so what can we do with a gallery?’ I said, ‘Okay, let’s have a go at it.’” They named it the Mad & Noisy Gallery after the river that runs through town. As president of the board, Ruppel ran the gallery, applying for and receiving several Trillium grants that kept it operating as a non-profit cooperative showing the works of up to 40 artists until it was sold in 2013. A slight turn of the head reveals the Station on the Green, the town’s cultural hub, which hosts everything from fundraisers and concerts to

private functions like weddings and memorial services. Hatched as a Millennium project in 1999, the Station project required its proponents to raise $500,000 within a specific timeframe. With Ruppel taking the lead, the group raised the necessary funds on schedule, with over 495 individuals and businesses contributing. He then acted as facilitator between the architect, the contractor and the township during the building process. “It was a real community effort, and it was really exciting to see everyone support it,” he says. “Every contractor had to agree to contribute something back – time or money or supplies – to the construction. If we had to lay interlocking brick, we’d have 15 people show up to help us.” Today, Ruppel remains on the Station’s board of directors and is involved with all aspects of its activities, from running the Creemore Art Auction to maintaining the Station’s skating rink. “I just look at the Station as a great centrepiece for this town,” he enthuses. “Personally I find it very rewarding to do something for the community that people will be able to enjoy for years to come. “T
his is meant to be kid heaven,” says Joe Canavan as he guides me through the sumptuous winter chalet that he and his wife Laurissa built seven years ago. “We hoped our three sons would want to be here and to become part of the weekend ski life. Now all of them are in racing programs at Osler Bluff Ski Club and loving it. Having this house has been great for our family.” The heavenly part starts every winter weekend morning when the boys (Spencer, 15, Hayden, 13, and Fraser, 10) awaken to a scenic view of the ski hills. From every bedroom window the snowy ski runs lie beckoning, an incentive for the boys to get out of bed and gear up. This view of the ski hills was a chief consideration when the sight lines were being worked out on the two-acre lot with Toronto architect Alex Rebanks. The primary objective was to have a feeling of connectivity with the outside even though the house was planned solely for winter weekends. An abundance of windows open to views, not only of the ski hills, but also of the golf course next door, the farmer’s field across the road, and a brook that runs along one side of the property. It is from that brook that the home takes its name: Winterbrook. The Wiarton stone chosen for the exterior cladding gives the sprawling chalet a sense of belonging, as do the mature trees that were planted all over the property. Laurissa, who plays a large role in the design of her houses, wanted the interior to be both elegant and relaxed. She found inspiration in the Belgian farmhouse style

The aesthetic involves light-filled spaces, raw materials, linen fabrics, worn finishes, and a limited palette. “I saw a magazine article featuring Kantelberg’s country house in the Mulmur Hills,” offers Laurissa, “and I knew that was the look I wanted. I contacted her and she became involved, helping me to choose design features, lights and furniture.” But most importantly, Laurissa wanted the house to be calm and welcoming for family living and weekend entertaining. On the main level is an open kitchen/dining area with an island topped by one enormous slab of Italian statuario marble. “It was challenging to bring this size of marble into the house,” admits Laurissa, “but I really wanted it to be seamless. guests gather when we entertain and cook, and every morning it’s where the kids eat breakfast.” Across from the island is an area for more formal dining, with sight lines through to the great room in order to see and enjoy the fire blazing in the massive stone fireplace. Surrounding the custom-built table (made of salvaged hickory barn boards) are comfortable antique chairs in creamcoloured leather. A window along one side offers a view of the ski hills and overhead, a dramatic antler chandelier casts shimmering light. “We love to sit here at night,” says Laurissa, “and watch the lights of the snow cats going up and down the hills.” Despite its grandeur (almost 6,000 square feet), the chalet has organic textures and warming wood elements (like the Fraser fir posts and beams) that make it cosy. At night it is especially romantic due to cleverly conceived

“We love to sit here at night,” says Laurissa, “and watch the lights of the snow cats going up and down the hills.” lighting. “Laurissa is passionate about lighting,” says Mary Ellen Lynch, a licensed architect who specializes in lighting, “and she understands the importance of integrating the lighting with the architecture.” Lynch came to the project when the bulk of the framing was completed but before the walls were closed in, allowing her to get wiring into the appropriate wall spaces. She was able to integrate hidden LED lights into the wooden ceiling beams in the great room (adding much-needed light to the dark wood ceiling) and position built-in step lights in the open riser staircase. Stylish rod lights also illuminate an impressive collection of paintings, an important part of the home’s aesthetic. Open white wall spaces framed by wood timbers showcase local artists like Paul Mantrop and Bill Franks, whose canvases capture the surrounding countryside. Frosty nights and falling snow are no deterrent to being outdoors for this family. From the kitchen, glass doors open to an outdoor stone terrace that boasts a raised fire feature, a gas barbecue and a hot tub. “On winter nights when snow is falling this is our favourite place to be,” enthuses Joe. “Food is cooking on the barbecue, the boys are in the hot tub, the fire is creating warmth … it’s wonderful!” Also on the main level is a great room with an open hearth stone fireplace and huge windows that frame a spectacular view of the ski hills. Country, all of which (there are three in the house) resemble authentic woodburning fires but are controlled by the flick of a converter switch. The flames blaze behind ‘disappearing’ ceramic glass that is so non-reflective it looks like an open fire. One fireplace that gets turned on every morning is in the serene mainfloor den, an oak-panelled room lined with bookshelves. “This is my favourite room,” says Joe. “I come in here early, turn on the fireplace, catch up on some reading, often watch deer crossing our yard. It’s a calming space, a nice place to be before the boys are up and getting ready for their ski days.” For the three boys, getting organized on race mornings is made easier by

a fully rigged ski waxing and tuning room. They each have their own locker space, hooks for backpacks, a wool-covered bench for putting on boots, a mitt warmer and a complete waxing area where they tune their own skis. It’s not until after a full day on the slopes that the boys come back to the chalet and get to appreciate what their father calls “kid heaven.” The après ski fun takes place in the lower level media room, where a movie screen descends from the ceiling and built-in speakers create a surround-sound theatre. There’s a television dedicated to video games and a bubble hockey game from Super Chexx. A complete fitness room is outfitted with gym equipment from Advantage Fitness, and for post-workouts the boys can relax on the comfy sofa that faces the impressive stone fireplace. Former champion ski racer Todd Brooker is active and relatively pain free today thanks to a combination of surgery, medication, diet and regular exercise. “These days, no matter how I move – whether it’s cycling, skiing, riding my horse or walking my dog – my knee always feels better after the activity than it did before,” he says.
Brooker’s experience is perhaps an extreme example of the effects of arthritis, which affects 4.6 million (one in six) Canadians. By 2036, that number is expected to increase to 7.5 million Canadian adults (one in five). According to the Arthritis Society, the disease encompasses more than one hundred conditions – ranging from mild tendonitis and bursitis to its most common form, osteoarthritis, to “systemic” (inflammatory) forms such as rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis can strike anyone at anytime, regardless of age, physical condition or ethnic background, often with devastating and debilitating effects. The main symptoms of arthritis are chronic joint pain, stiffness and swelling, which can result in significant disability and poor quality of life. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a serious and debilitating disease that can affect people of any age. Although its cause is still unknown, RA is believed to be the result of a malfunctioning immune system, which attacks multiple joints in the body. Many of the practitioners and techniques covered in this article can help RA patients with pain relief and mobility, but any course of treatment should begin with the family doctor. While RA is a severe illness that requires medical intervention, this article will focus on osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis affecting residents in Southern Georgian Bay.
S port M edicine Until his recent retirement, physician Dr. John Bowman of Collingwood Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre treated many patients with osteoarthritis for over 15 years. He says arthritis has been prevalent throughout history, but is more topical these days because, while people are aging, they are more active than previous generations. From his experience, Bowman has several observations on osteoarthritis: under age 55, it affects men and women equally; over 55, it is more common in women (possibly due to the onset of menopause
When you’re speeding down a mountain on skis at 120 kph, anything can happen – and often does. At the age of 18, former “Crazy Canuck” Todd Brooker, now a successful Southern Georgian Bay real estate agent and TV ski racing commentator, crashed while training for a World Cup ski race in Austria, tearing all four ligaments in his knee. Despite the severity of his injury, a multitude of knee surgeries and hours of rehabilitation, Brooker managed to remain competitive in ski racing, earning three World Cup victories, seven podiums and 15 top-10 World Cup finishes, and ninth place at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo. Then, at age 27, Brooker’s racing career came to an abrupt end in Kitzbühel, Austria, with one of the most spectacular crashes ever witnessed in competitive skiing. In the ensuing years, his knee deteriorated, causing constant pain with any activity. Brooker decided to see a sports injury physician, who described his condition as “post-traumatic osteoarthritis.” His original injury had damaged not only his ligaments, but also the cartilage in his knee. Over the years, the cartilage wore prematurely. In addition to taking prescription arthritis medication, Brooker’s physician encouraged non-load-bearing exercises in order to maintain his knee flexibility, range of motion and strength. He also recommended “high tibial osteonomy” (HTO) surgery to straighten out Brooker’s bowed leg by transferring his weight to the outside half of his knee, where he still had cartilage. Brooker had the surgery in 2007. “I was pretty sedentary around the time of my surgery, weighing about 230 pounds,” Brooker recalls. “My doctor was telling me to exercise but, because of all the weight I was carrying, moving my body was difficult and very painful.” Brooker decided he needed to lose weight in order to ease the load on his arthritic knee. Researching volumes of information on osteoarthritis, he discovered that a glutenfree diet – no wheat, no carbohydrates – could help him lose pounds and reduce inflammation in the knee joint (arthritis literally means “joint inflammation”). Adhering to a regimen of gluten-free eating and regular non-load-bearing exercise, Brooker has lost 40 pounds since his HTO surgery. “These days, no matter how I move – whether it’s cycling, skiing, riding my horse or walking my dog – my knee always feels better after the activity than it did before,” he says. Brooker attributes his ability to stay active and relatively pain free to a combination of medication, diet and regular exercise.

Ultrasound stimulates arthritic tissue, helping to improve blood flow. and a decrease in estrogen); almost everyone experiences some arthritis symptoms by the time they reach the age of 70; the disease occurs most often in the knees, hips and spine (less common in the feet and ankles). What is osteoarthritis? Simply put, it is a condition where cartilage, the protective layer covering the ends of bones where they meet a joint, are damaged. “The joints in our bodies are coated with a substance similar to plastic,’” Bowman explains. “If cartilage wears out, you get bone-on-bone friction, which triggers an inflammatory reaction, sending irritants to the joint. The body then responds by making the joint painful.” Unfortunately, once cartilage wears out, it does not re-grow. The causes of osteoarthritis are not totally clear. It can result from a genetic predisposition or in consequence of a number of factors: being overweight; previous joint injuries such as fractures and torn ligaments; activities with excessive knee load (such as kneeling, squatting, lifting or climbing); repetitive load activity (such

Bowman likens a person with osteoarthritis to “an old pickup truck with parts wearing out – you don’t want to overload it or drive it on bumpy roads.” This simple analogy is key to treating osteoarthritis, he says. “We very much want people to continue their activities, but it has to be done in a way that doesn’t do any harm. It all comes down to a modification of activities.” Under new ownership, the Collingwood Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre continues to help people with osteoarthritis using a multi-disciplinary team approach including sport medicine, physiotherapy, acupuncture and other therapies. “The key to treating the disease is diagnosis,” says senior physiotherapist and co-director Julie Moss-Kujala. “It begins with an assessment by a physiotherapist or a sport medicine physician.” Moss-Kujala believes education is an important component of osteoarthritis treatment. The clinic’s main focus is on weight management through diet, and exercise to lighten the load on weight-bearing joints (hips, knees and feet). “First we ask our clients which activities they enjoy doing,” she says. “Then we

recommend minor modifications that will allow them to remain active with the least impact on their arthritic joints, while strengthening the muscles around those joints.” To treat the primary symptoms of osteoarthritis, namely swelling, inflammation, pain and reduced mobility, the clinic employs a number of therapies that are tailored to individual patients’ condition and lifestyle. Physiotherapy techniques help to loosen tight tissue and restore motion, flexibility and strength. Acupuncture helps to relieve pain and swelling. Under the supervision of its two sport medicine physicians, the clinic also prescribes medication to reduce pain and inflammation, and uses several leadingedge therapies injected directly in the arthritic joint to help reduce symptoms. Cortisone, a potent anti-inflammatory used in conjunction with other arthritis therapies, acts as a ‘fire extinguisher,’ relieving symptoms temporarily to enable increased activity or exercise. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), derived from the patient’s own blood, contains a high level of growth factors to help rebuild damaged tendons or cartilage. While area sport medicine clinics offer a number of modalities to treat osteoarthritis, other healthcare professionals in the region also offer beneficial therapies, conventional and otherwise, for the disease. On The Bay interviewed several practitioners, representing a variety of disciplines, to learn how they are helping people to stay active in spite of their condition.

Physiotherapist Sue Underhill of Maximum Physiotherapy in Collingwood believes that osteoarthritis is very prevalent in our region, which has a large population of older athletes and people who “want to keep doing what they’re doing.” Working with her patients on range of motion, flexibility and strength, she advises caution with impact activities such as running, jumping or skipping. “Osteoarthritis doesn’t mean stopping activity,” says Underhill. “It’s all about maintaining what you have and preventing the condition from getting worse by finding activities and exercises that are appropriate.” Following an assessment

of the patient’s condition, she teaches exercises and techniques at her clinic that patients can continue at home, which can be as simple as actively extending the knee or riding on an exercise bicycle to improve range of motion. “Every person is different,” she adds. “We recommend exercises that are geared to the patient, based on their specific complaint and goals.” Noting that arthritis in the knee is most common among her patients, Underhill advises those who are having trouble with normal everyday activities to be fitted with an uploader brace, to take the load off the affected knee.
A cupuncture This discipline has been around for thousands of years, and continues to be widely accepted around the world as an effective tool for managing pain and inflammation. Corinna McFarlane of Blue Mountain Acupuncture in Collingwood emphasizes that acupuncture is an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine, which she formally studied prior to opening her practice. According to McFarlane, acupuncture needles are a primary tool for treating osteoarthritis. “Eightyfive per cent of my practice is geared to treating joint issues – in knees, hips and hands, as well as degenerative disc disease, for which I have had great results,” she says. McFarlane treats people of all ages, from juveniles to patients well into their 80s, who often arrive using a cane or a walker. She works with
almost 20 physicians in Barrie and Southern Georgian Bay, who refer patients with arthritic conditions. Describing acupuncture as “treating the root and the branch,” McFarlane explains how the treatment works. “Acupuncture stimulates nerves in muscles and other tissues, leading to the release of endorphins and other body chemicals, which breaks the cycle of pain in the brain,” she says. “It also inhibits the activity of cytokines, which are mediators of inflammation, increasing microcirculation and helping to disperse swelling.” McFarlane stresses the importance of breaking the cycle of pain from arthritis, so that patients can remain active. “Acupuncture is a tool for doing this, giving you a window of opportunity to stay active or return to activity,” she says.
c hiroprActic As with other disciplines, the majority of patients chiropractor Adam Markew treats at Georgian Family Chiropractic in Wasaga Beach are active adults. Focusing on the back, chiropractic treatments minimize stresses on joints and correct the mechanics of the spine, helping with mobility and pain. “Back problems like degenerative disc disease tend to cascade out of control,” says Markew. “Chiropractic interrupts the cycle of wear and tear and corrects bad joint mechanics.” Assessing the patient – and requesting x-rays in extreme cases – Markew employs five primary chiropractic techniques, as required, to help with pain and mobility: activators, traction,

drop table, muscle techniques or acupuncture. “Dealing with osteoarthritis is a process,” Markew says, adding that his work on the spine often helps arthritic hips. “It takes a long time to get the disease, and it’s a long process to correct it. Deterioration is inevitable; what’s done is done. I help people to stop the progress of arthritis and move on.” His advice for avoiding or delaying osteoarthritis is simple: “Keep your body nimble and mobile. Be proactive to avoid the condition in the first place.”
n AturopAthy Bayside Wellness in Collingwood offers a multidisciplinary approach to health care. On staff are two chiropractors, three massage therapists, a psychotherapist and a naturopath, Aranka Jones. Jones, who also collaborates with a personal trainer at the Northwood Club, believes that poor dietary habits are a primary cause of osteoarthritis. “Processed foods, refined sugars and unhealthy fats increase weight and the amount of inflammation in the body, affecting joints and cardiovascular health,” she maintains. Concurring with Todd Brooker, Jones singles out gluten, a “super carbohydrate” found in wheat, as a primary culprit in increasing inflammation. “Most people eat too many carbohydrates. High carb intake makes you crave more carbs throughout the day, which perpetuates a cycle of your blood sugar being out of balance,” she explains. According to Jones, naturopathy is about detective work, getting to the root of what is causing the patient’s

She starts by asking her patients questions about their diet. “There is a popular misconception about having to drastically change your diet when you see a naturopath,” Jones says. “The key is to make small tweaks to your diet and eat meals in balance. Start with a balanced breakfast including protein and healthy fats. Add healthier foods to your lunch and dinner. Just one small change can make you feel much better. You’ll have more control of your appetite, improve your mood and have more energy.” Jones’ primary approach to treating osteoarthritis in her patients is teaching them how to control their weight through proper diet combined with low-impact exercise. She also recommends Omega 3 fatty acids (a natural anti-inflammatory) to balance out Omega 6 fatty acids found in processed foods. For patients with advanced arthritis, Jones highly recommends taking a curcumin supplement. Describing curcumin, an extract of turmeric (found in curry powder), as “one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatory substances available,” she says her arthritis patients have experienced very positive results in managing their pain by taking the supplement.
C hiropody According to chiropodist Tony Abbott of Abbott Foot and Ankle Clinic in Collingwood, the source of many arthritic conditions from the hips down can be attributed to problems with the foot – or the big toe, to be exact. Abbot explains: “Mechanical forces cause the toe to dislodge. Over time, the

Because it is painful to walk normally, the body shifts, affecting the alignment of the knees and hips above, which can cause arthritis to develop in these joints as well.” Abbott’s clinic offers four primary treatments for the misalignment of the big toe, a condition commonly known as a bunion: proper footwear made of softer material, wider in the front with a rocker sole, takes some of the stress off the toe; custom orthotics control abnormal forces on the feet; laser therapy stimulates healing deep within the tissues by removing “waste products”; and topical creams such as Cryoderm (Abbott’s favourite) help to reduce pain.
M assage T herapy Christina Knott, registered massage therapist (RMT) at No More Knotts Massage Therapy Clinic in Thornbury says her osteoarthritis treatment aims to increase joint mobility and range of motion while decreasing stiffness and pain. “We focus on strengthening the body from the inside out and teaching people how to move pain-free,” says Knott. “In addition to educating our patients on how to reduce daily wear and tear on their joints and improve their motion, I recommend easy, enjoyable exercises that aren’t strenuous or intense, such as pendulum swings and other range of motion exercises.” As to actual manipulation of the arthritic joint, Knott is allowed up to ‘grade four’ joint mobilization as an RMT (compared to grade five for a chiropractor). Her technique opens up the arthritic joint to replenish “synovial fluid” and nutrients, thereby lubricating the affected area. “Like putting oil into the engine,” she explains. Knott also works with her clients to strenghten the small muscles that support the joint. As long as the joint is not inflamed, she uses heat as a modality to increase blood circulation and reduce pain.

ARTHRITIS FACTS The sobering significance of the arthritis epidemic BY THE NUMBERS According to the Canadian Arthritis Society: • Over 4.6 million Canadian adults (one in six Canadians aged 15 years and older) report having arthritis. By 2036, this number is expected to grow to an estimated 7.5 million Canadian adults (one in five). • The impact of arthritis on the Canadian economy (healthcare costs and lost productivity) is estimated to be $33 billion annually. This number is expected to more than double to over $67 billion by 2031. • Among all causes of disability in Canada, arthritis ranks first among women and third among men. • Two out of three Canadians affected by arthritis are women. • Nearly three out of every five people with arthritis are of working age.
WHAT IS ARTHRITIS? hen my family starts to feel a little less than awesome, it is not surprising that I turn to food first. In my clan food has always been medicinal. When I was home sick from school with a sore throat or a cold my mom made me homemade cheese and noodles – not what you would expect to be fed when feeling under the weather, but for whatever reason it always made me feel just about right. Nothing healed me faster than being cuddled up under a blanket on the couch with a bowl of rich, creamy noodles. For a friend it is canned pears; for my husband it is always boiled eggs and toast. We all have our comfort foods that heal and soothe us. I am not a doctor, a naturopath or even a reader of health magazines, but I have great confidence in food-based home remedies. For me that means recipes and reasonings that have been passed on to me from my mother, from her mother and so on, and tweaked here and there throughout the ages.
In our home if you’re feeling a little feverish, it’s time for chicken stock augmented with chunks of ginger, whole garlic cloves, fresh squeezed lime juice and an ample dose of hot chillies. When my boys are suffering from a relentless cough they willingly open their mouths wide for a tablespoon of honey. When I’m achy and feeling awful due to congestion or a cold, I always start with warm water, lemon, honey and ginger. And, whatever the time of year, if we can’t sleep we all know a cup of warm milk with honey will do the trick. I’m not entirely sure why these home remedies work, but they do. My theories aren’t based on science but make sense to me. We sweat out our fevers with the help of chillies and garlic; we coat our irritated throats with honey; we clear our systems with the stringent power of ginger; and, well, warm milk just makes you feel sleepy. it. Panacea? Placebo? Perhaps, but the result is the same. With the falling of the leaves and the first surprise dusting of snow, we begin looking for immune boosters in all their forms: over-the-counter supplements, increased exercise, and extra citrus in our diet. For me, keeping my family healthy, any time of the year, always starts with what we put in our bellies. I’m not a huge fan of exercise for the sake of exercise (I enjoy the social aspects a little more) and I don’t subscribe to chemical reincarnations of what an orange can give me. I am a firm believer that everything our bodies need to stay healthy is available to us in its purest form, on the produce shelves of the supermarket or from our many farm markets and 100-mile stores. I am not claiming that food heals all. Of course, serious diseases like cancer require medical intervention, but doctors often recommend dietary changes to help (and in some cases prevent) illnesses such as diabetes, celiac disease and heart disease. Healthy eating is simply the best, most natural way to get – and stay – healthy. There was a certain cookbook floating around this past summer, its deliciously nutritious-looking cover turning up on every kitchen counter I came across: The Oh She Glows Cookbook by Angela Liddon. My 16-year-old niece was pining for it and my yoga instructor had recently bought it on her yoga instructor’s recommendation. It seemed I had to have it. This cookbook has surprised me. Unlike many others, which have been purchased for their photographs, for a single recipe or because they take me away at a time when I’m not travelling as much as I would like, this one hasn’t been shelved after a week. We recently had guests who knew this cookbook and commented that they hate when people leave cookbooks out, advertising a certain lifestyle that they may or may not adhere to. I defended myself and said “but I actually use this one” and cooked solely from it for the weekend ahead. The amazing thing for me, as an unabashed carnivore, is that everything in this book is vegan. I support friends and family who decide to go down their own culinary paths, be it for health, political or environmental reasons, but I have always chosen a path with no particular destination – full exploration with a variety of meandering routes that allow me to try almost anything in the name of adventure. So I bought a vegan cookbook, certain that it would be relegated to that part of my collection (along with the raw food cookbook and the bean cookbook) that doesn’t get much action. I was wrong. This cookbook stays on my kitchen island to aid me in the making of my morning smoothie (I am drinking a mojito-inspired smoothie as I write this, and although not quite as delicious as the alcoholic version, it is a much healthier way to start my day). It helps my family in our goal to eat less meat, and after 20 years of cooking for a living it has given me much inspiration. It has also reinforced the powerful fact that food heals every day, not just when we’re feeling sick.

I am a firm believer that everything our bodies need to stay healthy is available to us in its purest form, on the produce shelves of the supermarket or from our many farm markets and 100-mile stores. I am the only person I know (but I have a hunch I picked this up from my mother) who reads the foreword of every cookbook I purchase. I like to know a little bit about the person who is going to help feed me and my family. Liddon suffered from an unhealthy relationship with food that led to a cycle of poor eating habits before she changed her perspective and found the healing qualities of food. The fact that food heals isn’t a secret, nor is it a new concept, yet I find it surprising how often we forget this. To me it is basic. What you put in is what you get out. If you put highly processed, low-fat, chemically enhanced ‘food’ into your belly you likely won’t feel nearly as great as if you put in whole, fresh, real food. It might not be an instant pick-me-up (like a can of Red Bull), but bit by bit you will start to feel better. Using this cookbook has made me feel better. I am eating less meat than I ever have, I am eating more legumes and beans than I thought possible, and with cold and flu season upon us I am feeling better than ever. I can’t list all the benefits of a kitchen pharmacy in this short space, but it is amazing how much ‘medicine’ you will find there. A friend recently lent me an Ayurveda book and I immediately flipped to the glossary of foods that can heal. I didn’t know a pinch of baking soda mixed with the juice from half a lemon and some warm water is great for indigestion and the relief of gas; or that half a teaspoon of ginger powder mixed with a little water, heated and rubbed on my forehead, can bring instant relief from a headache; or that nutmeg can help with insomnia. It is not within my realm to advise, but merely to suggest that overall health begins on the produce shelf of the grocery store, at your local farmer’s market or 100-mile shop, in your own veggie patch and on your spice rack. It is here we should look first, not our medicine cabinet, when we feel an ache coming on. A change of perspective is sometimes all we need to feel better in so many ways. ❧

Growing up in Midland, Ontario, on a hill where there were no chairlifts (only Pomalifts) and one snowmobile took care of the grooming, Southern Georgian Bay’s ski hills always felt like mountains.

From lifts built with a couple of sleds and old truck engines to high-speed six-passenger detachable chairs that whisk skiers up the hill in record time, the resort bears little resemblance to what it was in Jozo’s time. Today, our local hills have changed what they can. Fully automated snowmaking, advanced grooming and high-speed lifts enhance what they can’t change – the length and pitch of their slopes. At all of our area ski hills, members, ticket holders, presidents and employees are quick to point out the progress that has been made over the last 75 years in the industry. However, they are equally quick to highlight that at the heart of it all everything remains the same. Skiing is ultimately about family, fun and being active in the outdoors.
BLUE: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN The biggest player on the Southern Ontario ski scene is unquestionably Blue Mountain. Drawing over two million visitors a year, Blue Mountain has placed Southern Georgian Bay on the international tourist map along with national treasures like Niagara Falls and the nation’s capital. Blue Mountain Resort will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year and Paul Pinchbeck, director of marketing, considers it a celebration of the three phases of Blue.*

The first phase was rooted in one man’s vision: Czechoslovakian-born Jozo Weider. In the early 1940s, when the sport of downhill skiing in Ontario had few participants, Weider saw the future of not just a sport but of a lifestyle. Weider had an interesting business strategy that not everyone knows about, says Pinchbeck. In his innovative way, Weider created other businesses, like Blue Mountain Pottery, in conjunction with the ski hill, creating an economy beyond skiing but within its territory. The creation of jobs and disposable income meant more visitors to the local ski hill. By creating a highly sought-after product, in the form of pottery, more visitors were coming to the area, which ultimately meant more people skiing at Blue Mountain. It is not an unfamiliar strategy today, and we continue to see it at Blue Mountain through a diversified economy that can sustain itself in all seasons. Weider’s other visions were also groundbreaking for the area and time. In the early 1960s Weider had his own vision of a resort “village,” and by the 1980s the family secured planning opportunities to make Blue Mountain an iconic destination. The second phase of Blue Mountain took place in the late 1990s, when the Weider family welcomed Intrawest (developer and operator of destination resorts) onto the scene by selling 50 per cent of the company. With the help of Intrawest, Jozo’s vision of a village was actualized. Blue Mountain quickly grew

from a resort with a couple hundred scattered hotel rooms and condos to well over 1,000, and from two restaurants to dozens. Blue Mountain expanded its ski operations to include 42 runs, 350 acres of skiable terrain and 12 lifts, making it the largest ski resort in Ontario. The third phase, says Pinchbeck, is the movement forward, with the Weider family selling Intrawest the remaining 50 per cent of Blue Mountain Resort in 2014. Pinchbeck says this phase will see the complete transformation of Blue Mountain into an all-season resort. For the winter season, Intrawest will continue to do what it has been doing for the past 15 years: leading the industry in chairlifts, snowmaking and night skiing, says Pinchbeck, aligning Blue Mountain and Intrawest with Jozo’s pioneer vision. “It has really taken off as a company and as a resort,” says Pinchbeck. “It’s a compelling product.” Moving forward, Pinchbeck says, the resort will change and evolve with the changing face of Ontario. “The largest opportunity to grow is to move into the multicultural base,” he explains. “We all share the same core values and the love of the outdoors. Toronto compared to 50 years ago has changed.” Skiing in Southern Georgian Bay has changed in the last 50 years as well. Fifty years might not seem that long when you consider how many advancements have been made in the industry. From steep farmers’ fields and wild forests to narrow channels of pitches, and from lifts built with a couple of sleds and old truck engines to high-speed six-passenger detachable chairs that whisk skiers up the hill in record time, the resort bears little resemblance to what it was in Jozo’s time.

snowmaking to kilometres of snowshoeing trails and ice rinks, local clubs offer more bang for your buck then they ever have before. The Glen, as it’s known by members and non-members alike, celebrated its 50-year anniversary in the 2014-2015 season. Some families at the Glen are fourth generation members and some of the staff have connections to the area dating back more than 100 years, with many of the existing employees being descendants of original settlers. “The mom of one of our employees was raised on one of our snowshoe trails,” notes Wansbrough. This connection to place and to family is what keeps local private clubs going. Ask any president or GM of a local private club what their main focus is and they will tell you, family and community. “We have a great product,” says Wansbrough of the area’s ski industry. “What other winter sport can have three generations of participants? Everyone can play together; you don’t have to sit and watch. Everyone is on the snow.” Wansbrough likens being a member of a local club to cottaging in the winter, with the added bonus that this cottage experience lasts 12-16 weeks, a lot longer than our split-second summers. To make the season all that it can be and to ensure the best conditions, area ski hills have had to continually invest and reinvest in what many industry players call “snow farming.” In the early days people relied on what nature gave them, but today that’s just too risky, and like everything else, people want and expect more. Snow farming has come to include not just more snow and the grooming of it, but a diverse range of snow catering to various levels of skiers and their demands. “The ’90s were the age of lift advancement,” says Wansbrough. “The 2000s are all about making snowmaking high-tech.” Jeff Courtemanche, general manager of Craigleith Ski Club, has been working at the club for 26 years and says Craigleith has invested in the most sophisticated snowmaking in Canada, “without a doubt.” “We began our snowmaking expansion in 1992. It was a leap forward, investing in automation and technology,” says Courtemanche. “We had an early start and we are continually building on it and continually improving it to make it the most efficient it can be.”

“We have a long history of putting skiers on national teams,” says Woodburn. “Our young athletes are living proof when you learn to ski here (Ontario) you can compete anywhere in the world.” By next year, says Courtemanche, Craigleith will have fully automated snowmaking. “One man and a computer will be able to run the entire snowmaking operation.” From that computer, the “snow farmer” is not only able to put an entire layer of snow over Craigleith’s 175 acres of skiable terrain at once, but can also choose what kind of snow to lay on which trails. With 20 different qualities of snow (from light and fluffy with no moisture content to heavy, ‘snowball-making snow’), snow farming is both an art and a science. “Through automation we can make heavier snow for racing and lighter snow for beginners,” says Courtemanche. “On each trail the snow can be tailored, depending on what we want to do.” Advancements in snowmaking also mean that more trails open earlier and operators are able to maintain the condition of their trails throughout the season, translating to more days on the snow. There is competition between clubs every year to see which will be the first to open, earning bragging rights. “We were the only ski club to open in November last year, two or three weeks before the other clubs,” says Courtemanche proudly. From an earlier start, the ski season now extends well into spring, with operators

running out of skiers before they run out of snow. But more than just lengthening the season, technology is also used to enhance the on-hill experience. Ontario ski hills may not be high, but they produce some of the world’s best skiers, who have grown up skiing in some of the most challenging conditions.
DIVERSE DEMOGRAPHICS The Georgian Peaks Club is best known for its terrain. is best known for its terrain. “We’re long and we’re steep,” says general manager Mark Woodburn. With 820 vertical feet, the Peaks offers the highest skiing in Southern Ontario and produces some of the best skiers in Canada. 800 kids and youths enrolled in programs during the season, it’s no wonder that at least a handful of them end up on top. But skiing isn’t just for the young. In the 36 years Jeff Conn has worked at Osler Bluff Ski Club, he has seen new members of all ages join the club while the aging demographic takes to the slopes with increased vigour and enthusiasm. Conn, general manager of Osler, guesses his club has at least 120 members over the age of 80, including a 94-year-old member who still races in the club championships every year. Last year Conn had the privilege of skiing with three members all over the age of 90. “These guys had all been skiing at the club since the 1950s and I asked them, ‘what do you think has changed?’ They all agreed, diet, health, education and lifestyle,” recalls Conn. “Twenty to 30 years ago people hung up their skis at 70,” “Now we’re seeing people in their 80s and 90s on the hills. Many of our senior members take exercise very seriously. Skiing is an important part but fitness is as well.”

But it’s not just about fitness, admits Conn. Osler conducted a membership survey last year and one quote from a senior member said it all: “I used to ski to stay fit, and now I stay fit to ski.” Ski boots are more comfortable, skis are easier to use, snow conditions are better, the lifts are faster and lineups are virtually non-existent – all of which make the sport more enjoyable. “People used to come up to the area and ski hard from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.,” says Conn. “The lifts were slower and people were standing in line a lot more. People would make 30 or 40 runs in a day. Now they can do that in half a day, having skied all the vertical they want.” These advancements mean area hills have had to diversify. With high-speed detachable lifts making it possible to get in a full day’s skiing by noon, lunch time at any of the local clubs sees dozens of members trading in their skis for snowshoes or Nordic gear. “I often see 150 people heading out for an afternoon snowshoe or cross-country skiing on our lower trails,” says Conn. If you’re done skiing for the day, you no longer have to be “trapped in the lodge,” and if you don’t ski, there are lots of other options these days. Osler not only has 25 kilometres of snowshoe trails and a track setter that grooms 15 kilometres of Nordic trails; the club also grooms a one-kilometre skate skiing trail around its reservoir and has installed a chilled ice rink complete with a Zamboni for afternoon games of shinny and evening free skates.

In the early days of area ski clubs, members often created their own social events. Now it’s up to the club to create the social scene. From magic shows for the under 10s, rail jams for the under 18s and local musicians and après drinks and snacks for those of age, there is something for everyone when it’s time to call it a day. Beaver Valley Ski Club is its own little village. Unlike the Collingwood area ski

clubs, which compete with dozens of restaurants and bars in surrounding towns, BVSC is a one-stop shop for its members. “We’re a real getaway, a hidden gem,” says Giffen. “We’re secluded out in the valley. People love to escape here.” The original clubhouse at BVSC still stands, with numerous additions and renovations made over the years. It is here that the BVSC offers après ski events for kids and adults, along with fundraising galas and a New Year’s Eve family après and toast followed by fireworks. Outside, after the
lifts have stopped turning, there is family tobogganing on the meadow every Saturday night, and night skiing on the Saturday night of Family Day Weekend. Andy Lee, general manager of the Toronto Ski Club (TSC), agrees that the social aspect of any club enhances morale and spirit among its members, both on and off the hill. “You can’t just have great alpine programs; you have to have great social programs as well,” he says. “Members are giving their time to invest into the club,” says Lee. “Many of the events are run by members, and they make the club enjoyable and successful.” Because the TSC is affiliated with Blue Mountain, the on-hill expenses aren’t as high as some other clubs, says Lee. This translates to lower membership dues, attracting new members to the club. “We have a lot more multicultural families and younger families joining,” he notes.
FAMILY FUN As any ski hill manager, operator, director or president will tell you, family is one of the main reasons people participate in the sport. Grant McEwen married into the Alpine Ski Club. His wife has been a member there since she was four, and McEwen, who is now president, has skied at the club for the past decade. McEwen describes Alpine as a “utopic family environment” and says the club promotes itself as an outdoor, healthy, active lifestyle club. At the Collingwood Ski Club (CSC) it is about more than just family; it is about local families. The CSC was originally called the Blue Mountain Ski Club when it was formed by local residents in the 1930s. However, by the end of that decade it changed to the name it keeps today (although membership extends beyond Collingwood to include principal residents of the Town of the Blue Mountains, Clearview and Wasaga Beach). The club’s A-frame lodge is a no-frills venue with kitchen space but no one there to cook; that is up to the members. This means that it is really like a home on the hills for its membership; a place to make breakfast in the morning, read by the fire in the afternoon, and enjoy the camaraderie after the runs have closed. “Our focus is on families,” says Mary Gibson, president of the CSC, “and to encourage local use and to ski.” The club is completely volunteer run, which means members are expected to shovel the walkway if there is a heavy snowfall, and to make sure there is always hot coffee in the pot. Mid-week the clubhouse is chockablock with the retired set, and on the weekends it’s almost like a different club, with families having the run of the place, says Gibson. Wednesday nights also see a lot of families taking advantage of Blue Mountain’s on-hill programs. “Wednesdays are busy evenings,” says Gibson. “You might see

It’s not surprising that the club has a two- to four year-wait list considering its affordability and its active social program, which includes popular men’s and ladies’ ski days along with Kids’ sleepovers, euchre nights and potlucks. Unlike the CSC, most clubs, with their hefty initiation fees and annual membership dues, are working hard to attract new families. Continual investment and renewed membership is the only way to ensure these not-forprofit playgrounds continue to operate for generations to come. Although the average age at which adults join the clubs has increased from the mid-30s to the mid-40s – due to people beginning their families later as well as a changing economy – it is the young family the clubs are targeting. This makes sense for a sport rooted in family, sending skiers aged two to 92 on runs that last only seconds but build memories that last a lifetime. Andrew Peycha After a career as an editorial illustrator, Andrew Peycha became a full-time painter in 2000. His quest for patterns of colour, light and shape have led him to travel the world including the Yukon, the Arctic Circle, Greenland and India. In the past year his search for stunning landscapes has taken him to British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador. “My work has grown with a impressionistic flavour over time, evolving into large areas of colour,” says Peycha of his unique style. “The subjects of these works are a variety of scenes: barns, trees, Georgian Bay, icebergs, tundra, mountains and portraits. The exploration of capturing the moment has lead my style to a more linear and more abstract modern approach that could be described as ‘post-impressionism meets the digital age.’” Peycha uses a thick application of paint, vivid colours, geometric forms and the distortion of forms for expressive effect, similar to a kaleidoscope or stained glass window, which fragments an image and reassembles it in a new way. “It allows me to reconsider something as familiar as the landscape and emphasize its patterns: the dance of geometry against organic forms, the distinction between depth and distance and the movement created by the placement of colour. My desire is to create an illusion of depth and vibration throughout the image and to capture some of the feeling the landscapes gives to me.” Peycha’s art is in many public, private and corporate collections throughout the world. Bingo’s muzzle was dinner-table height, just right for carving little hunks of salami into it. Connie said he spoiled the dog, which was correct. The day Connie left, Bingo fired out the front door like a cannonball for his morning run and knocked Lorne off his feet. He hit his face on the arm of the porch swing. Connie saw the whole thing. “That dog will be the death of you,” she said, holding a dishcloth full of ice against his eye. “He’s just a pup,” said Lorne. “If you want to kill a farmer, just move him into town.” That afternoon he knocked a panel out of the veranda door and nailed an old floor mat over it so Bingo could come and go as he pleased. At the play rehearsals, the others spent more time talking about what they should do instead of doing it. Derek decided tobacco was not a proper crop for a farmer and rewrote Old Jack to make him a dairy farmer, like Lorne had been. “Then I should be in rubber boots,” said Lorne. He said it enough times that Derek let him wear the boots, probably just to shut him up. The day of the dress rehearsal the mercury shrivelled to a dot and Lorne’s boots squeaked on the snow on the way to the barn. High cloud was blowing in from the northwest and there were rings around the sun. “Snow afore morning,” he said aloud, trying to sound like he was from Kentucky. He forked steaming corn silage into the concrete manger and watched as the six Holstein heifers gathered it into their mouths with long grey-pink tongues. After Lancy Kendall bought the dairy herd from him, Lorne offered to feed a few heifers for the winter, partly to keep the frost out of the foundation around the milk house and mostly because he liked the smell of them. Norma always said that when she died she wanted to come back as one of her husband’s cows. He looked after them that well. He’d been watching these heifers for three months now, but had seen no sign of her.

Julie kept up the gentle deception that Lorne would be doing her a great favour if he gave her a lift into town for rehearsals in the halfton, but he knew it was just her way of keeping an eye on him. She and Ollie lived across the road at the end of a long L-shaped lane that disappeared behind a slough filled with willows and emerged again at the top of the hill about half mile from Lorne’s house. Ollie cash cropped half the township with a fleet of tractors and combines, and had a row of storage sheds and grain towers on that hill that made the sun go down fifteen minutes earlier in Lorne’s kitchen at this time of the year. Ollie had rented Lorne’s fields ever since he sold the cows. “You ready?” asked Julie, slipping into the truck that evening and bringing with her the smell of perfume and biscuits. She had brown eyes, like Bingo, and you could see the hurt in them, too. The laugh lines were still there, despite the loss of a son who slipped off the 4th

He could see his barn light across the road three hundred yards away. Those hard little drifts would have a crust on them, and with the wind northwest there would be three of them in his own lane. He figured the footing would be better through the soybean field where the wind would sweep everything clean. He started walking. But there were drifts in the bean field, too. In the middle of the second drift the wind picked up the snow so it sliced into his face like a sword. It sucked the breath and the strength out of him in seconds. He walked away from the nursing home twelve years ago and they found him next morning, hard as a concrete block. They put alarms on the doors after that and gave all the inmates electric bracelets. or anything at that point in his life. There was no excuse for this stupidity right here, steps away from his own barn. The ambulance people would find him lying in the snow with Tan Peach Number Nine
on his face and cornstarch in his hair, and what would they make of that? What kind of fool do we have here? The cold was moving dangerously up into his guts now and his feet were like clubs. He let out a wretched cry and stood with his eyes closed, trying to sob the air back in. He was startled by the fight in him, the suddenly fierce urge to live. And then he felt it. A muzzle under his hand. Bingo. The dog bumped him gently and bounced away into the snow with a happy woof! crinkling his face into a grin and bowing his head in an invitation to play. When Lorne didn’t respond, the dog came back and bumped him again. This time he got his mitt under the dog’s collar and hung on. Bingo took his weight, held him and tugged him forward. His feet felt like they belonged to someone else. He stumped out of the drift and saw the field was clear now. He must be close to the barn. Then he saw the stone wall and pushed toward it, rounded the corner and the wind dropped. He pounded the latch on the milk house door and fell into the

Ollie carried him to the house as lightly as a child and laid him out on the couch by the pellet stove. “You didn’t call me and we drove down and found your truck,” said Julie. “You could have died out there.” He was shivering uncontrollably now, but the blood was moving again, bringing life back to his feet and the excruciating pain that comes with it. He grinned, gripped her hand and said, “No siree. Can’t die now. Can’t die before I’m supposed to – up on stage in that rocking chair tomorrow night.”

South Chair
n this photo, likely taken in December of 1959, Katherine (left) and Anna Weider, twin daughters of Blue Mountain Resort founder Jozo Weider, ride the newly built South Chair. The first chairlift in Ontario, the South Chair rounded out the resort, allowing skiers to make their way across the two-and-a-half miles of hillside, from north to south, by riding up one lift and skiing to another. Jozo Weider and outdoor manager Ken Skelton supervised the construction of the new double chairlift. Sections were cut, welded and assembled into towers at the Weider home farm. Eleven of the towers were dragged up the mountain by tractors and sleds and mounted into holes that had been dug by hand using picks and shovels – a laborious process through heavy clay and rock. Ingenious workers used makeshift derricks, ropes and pulleys to wrestle the towers into place. The South Chair operated through the 2000 winter season, after which it was replaced by the Southern Comfort, a high-speed, sixperson detachable lift that opened in 2001. The Southern Comfort

cost $3.1 million to build, with a capacity of 3,600 skiers per hour; the double chairlift it replaced had cost only $81,000 to install and carried 936 skiers per hour. The top tower of the South Chair was preserved by Ken Skelton’s son, Bill, at the request of Jozo’s son, George Weider. George provided the description for a sign describing the original lift, which still stands on the site attached to the preserved tower at the top of the hill. Katherine, who was married to long-time Blue Mountain president Gord Canning, and Anna, whose married name was Marik, both passed away in 2007. George Weider and Bill Skelton still reside in the area. Bill served as vice president of operations at Blue Mountain for over 40 years, leading the transition to modern detachable lifts and tower snowmaking.
