Well into their 80s and 90s, this accomplished group was sharp, opinionated and eager to share their insights. They talked about the sense of community and activity they experienced in the retirement residence.

“I want your readers to know that we aren’t just a bunch of boring old farts sitting around waiting for the grim reaper,” one participant, Robyn, laughed.

Our discussions included the pros and cons of a living inheritance where assets (money, property, possessions) are transferred while the owner is still alive. This allows the giver to witness the benefit of their generosity. Share the joy. Warm hands versus cold hands. Paul declared, “hearses don’t have luggage racks.”

Researching this piece brought about lively conversation, with most speaking strictly off the record. Total cone of silence. In our roundtable and private discussions afterwards, some concerns were shared that hadn’t been discussed with the participants’ own families. It was not uncommon to hear stories of arguments over wills creating irreparable fissures within families lasting generations.

Cottage transfers are often the most contentious. Skyrocketing values and the emotional minefield of these sacred spaces can divide a family.

Creative solutions are called for while everybody is still around to weigh in.

“Five years ago I made the difficult decision to sell the family cottage,” Raglan Village resident Jim explained. “I divided the proceeds between my daughters. My youngest and her family used the funds to help purchase a cottage of their own. It brought me more joy than you can imagine to spend Thanksgiving weekend at the new cottage with my girls and their families.”

Living inheritances allow for the transfer of assets to be scheduled alongside specific financial needs of the beneficiaries, such as a home purchase, starting a business or education expenses. Gifting assets while still alive can also provide an opportunity to guide and teach the next generation about financial responsibility. It is not just a tactic for the wealthy, as it allows for stories to be shared around the significance of pieces passed down through a family, down to something as small as a musical instrument or a tackle box.

Transfer of property is not without its downsides: loss of control of the asset, and leaving yourself enough to cover your own expenses with unexpected health-care costs, are prime examples. Creating a joint ownership arrangement for property can leave you exposed to the financial

liabilities of your heirs. “Have I left myself enough?” was a common concern. A recurring theme was the uncertainty about life’s unknowns.

“Do I want to leave myself vulnerable to my son-in-law’s debts?”

“Is fair equal; is equal fair?”

“I’m using partial gifting now as an inheritance test-drive to see if my kids just blow it all before putting my final will in place.”

“My son has squandered most of his opportunities. A bit rudderless. He’s a waiter. As in, ‘waiting around for me to die so he can get my money.’”

“With blended families, who is a grandchild?”

Privacy is also a consideration. Once a will has gone through probate in Ontario, it generally becomes public record. Anyone can access it. “I don’t want just anybody to be able to go through my financial details and who I decided to leave my money to after I’m gone,” a retired executive confided.

Gifting does not expose you to the same public disclosure.

“After a shared Sunday supper, Dad asked us what we would do with X number of dollars,” Colleen smiled.

“After much thought and laughter, we responded we’d pave our driveway. It brought Dad great pride every time he visited our home.”

For children, it is difficult not to come across as scheming entitled jackals. However, shared decision-making between generations provides opportunities for life lessons. Children navigating the care of elderly parents shared some of their own private concerns: “I’d like to talk to my widowed father now about his will before he changes it and leaves it all to his yoga instructor.”

“My parents’ wills have a number of provisions. It is like they are trying to control from beyond the grave.”

“Mom’s will was straightforward but it took me months to find out where all her bank accounts were.”

Kitchen table discussions on these topics can be awkward. They don’t have to be. Conversations provide opportunities for life lessons, priorities, values around responsibility, and the ability to witness your legacy.

AS SOON AS SCHOOL’S OUT ON FRIDAY, a local team arrives at the Stayner Arena for a practice unlike any other. Instead of slapshots and breakaways, the players pull on their practice jerseys, lace up their hockey skates and glide onto the ice for a session of intricate drills rooted in figure skating techniques without the toe picks.

Coaching them is none other than Elizabeth Manley, Canadian figure skating icon and Olympic silver medallist at the 1988 Calgary Games. Dubbed Canada’s Sweetheart, Manley’s triumphant rise to the podium is the kind of performance that stays with a nation, a moment where everyone remembers exactly where they were and who they were watching with. Her performance wasn’t only a display of elite athleticism

and artistry; it was the culmination of extraordinary perseverance through immense mental and emotional pressure, a journey that ultimately saw her rediscover the joy of the sport and deliver the skate of a lifetime.

Those memories resurface every time the Winter Games come around, and this year is no exception. “I had the honour of commentating at the Olympics in Salt Lake City, Torino and Vancouver, and it’s funny because I would sit in the broadcast booth asking myself, ‘How do they do this?’” she says. “I could feel the energy and tension of the skaters. I know exactly what the athletes are going through. You’re so focused and committed to what you’re doing that it doesn’t come across as tense. It’s when you’ve been removed from it that you think, ‘Wow, I did that.’”
