A cottage isn’t just a getaway, it’s a living legacy

A cottage isn’t just somewhere you go to get away. It’s not just a property. And it’s certainly not just a financial asset.

For Pattie Lovett-Reid, Chief Financial Commentator at HomeEquity Bank and a long-time cottage owner, it’s something far more personal. It’s where family life unfolds in a different rhythm.

“It’s an extension of our everyday lives,” she says. “When the kids come up for the weekend, everything shifts. The pace slows down. You end up having the kind of conversations you don’t get to during the week.”

From dockside dinners to quiet mornings with a coffee, the cottage becomes a place of real connection. A place where time feels different, and where those so-called ordinary moments take on more meaning.

“They’re the ones that anchor a family,” she says. “That’s what makes a cottage so meaningful. It’s something you get to experience now, not just pass down later.”

But those moments don’t just happen. They’re supported by planning. As much as cottages are about connection, they also come with responsibility. “Cottage life comes with real, ongoing costs, and they’re easy to underestimate,” says Lovett-Reid. “Repairs don’t always show up on your schedule.”

Maintenance, insurance, and unexpected fixes are simply part of the experience. Over time, those realities can start to shape how people think about their cottage, not just as a place they love, but as something that requires thoughtful planning to sustain.

“Our homes carry deep emotional meaning,” she says. “But they also represent wealth built through one of our most important investments, real estate.” For many Canadians, that real estate is their single largest asset, even if it’s not always thought of that way.

Rethinking how that wealth can be used

Lovett-Reid notes that accessing capital in retirement can often be challenging and tax-heavy, especially if it forces decisions that don’t align with long-term goals.

“That’s why home equity is increasingly being used as part of a broader financial strategy,” she explains. “You can’t eat a brick in retirement. Home equity isn’t about giving anything up. It’s about unlocking the wealth you’ve already built in your home and using it thoughtfully to support your cottage plans.”

For many, this shift is less about changing their lifestyle and more about creating flexibility within it, allowing them to continue enjoying the cottage while preserving balance across the rest of their finances.

Because when there’s clarity, something changes. “You breathe differently,” she says. “You make decisions from a place of confidence.”

A legacy you get to experience

A cottage isn’t just about what you leave behind. It’s about what you’re still creating: time together, and the freedom to enjoy it fully without unnecessary stress. Because in the end, the return isn’t just financial, it’s connection.

As Lovett-Reid puts it, “A living legacy is something you experience and share now, not just pass down later. The financial plan matters, but the purpose matters more.”

ABCs Vitamin

With more vitamin and supplement options than ever, how do we choose the ones that are right for us?

THE “ONE-A-DAY” MULTIVITAMIN

was first introduced to the general public in 1943. In fact, that was the marketing slogan. By the 1950s, the one-aday was intended to become a table staple, something the entire family consumed with dinner. It’s hard to tell how much of the trend was driven simply by post-war prosperity, and how much was a result of the simultaneous introduction and popular consumption of nutrient-deficient processed foods and frozen dinners. Either way, the vitamin habit stuck.

In the 1960s, the Flintstones children’s vitamin came along. But it wasn’t until around the turn of the millennium that trends began shifting towards customized, individual formulas. The age of information brought with it new ways of approaching health and wellness and an understanding that different bodies have different needs. Now, with entire health store aisles devoted to single-nutrient supplements by alphabetical name, what are the ABCs of everyday vitamins and how do we choose the combination that is right for us?

Kristen Scheiner, a holistic nutritionist and member of

the medical education team at CanPrev Natural Health Products, advises taking a well-rounded approach when considering which supplement formula is right for you.

“The most important factor to consider when choosing a supplement is your goal. There are so many options and it’s so easy to get overwhelmed that we need to have a clear destination in mind.”

Suzie Wensley, owner of Good Health Mart in Collingwood, also suggests taking a wholeperson approach to choosing the right formula. “There are various requirements for each gender and age group. Men are different from women. Children and teens are different from adults.”

With these recommendations in mind, it would seem natural to add to the considerations one’s stage of life, general fitness and lifestyle, pre-existing conditions and other medications, to just name a few. The essential place to start before introducing new supplements to your daily routine is to seek the advice of an experienced practitioner. But here is a run-down of the basics to help you get started on your supplement journey.

Immunity Boost Building Blocks

“For a lot of adults, just adding a B-complex can help support our stress response, fuel our energy and prevent burnout.”

THE TASTE OF COMMUNITY

Summer’s signature culinary event upholds the tradition of community-building through the celebration of fine food and drink.

Village. “We want to bring something unique to the event that can be prepared in advance and easily assembled on site and served cold for optimal freshness,” he says. For Laverty, nothing beats the octopus salad, a dish as aesthetically pleasing as it is delicious, a favourite on the Tholos menu that is sure to impress event guests.

For Tholos and other restaurants at Blue Mountain, connecting with the community has broader meaning. Taste of the Town offers these establishments an opportunity to introduce themselves and connect with community members who might otherwise regard “the Village” as only for tourists and be unfamiliar with its culinary offerings.

“It’s a really great way for us, and for our partners like Firehall Pizza, to remind people that we’re here and to feel part of the community we all call home,” says Laverty.

Events of this size are not an easy feat logistically. For many restaurants, the event presents, amongst other challenges, staffing issues—especially during the peak summer season. This is something the team at Aragon Gatherings knows well. A burgeoning new catering division of the formidable Aragon Restaurants group—whose portfolio of establishments includes such local favourites as Bent Taco, The Alphorn and Tesoro—Aragon Gatherings hopes to maximise the opportunity to launch and showcase their catering prowess.

“We can really do anything,” says Aragon’s head of operations, Chad Griffith. “From intimate

dinners for those who simply want to entertain a small group at home without cooking, to weddings in the hundreds of guests.”

Magdalena Barcz, Aragon’s events coordinator and the mastermind behind the new division, explains, “Our corporate executive chef, Rob Saunders, will be working closely with all the restaurant chefs to create a multi-course sample menu that really highlights the diversity of all of our restaurants, and showcases what we can offer as caterers.”

The event will also feature a wide variety of beverage vendors. Regular spirit participants include Georgian Hills Winery, Ardiel Cidery and Spy Cidery, along with a selection of nonalcoholic purveyors such as The Blue Mountain Tea Company, Sap Sucker and Ginger Bug—plus many more of both!

“One of the highlights of the afternoon is the opportunity for guests to sample an impressive selection of beverage brands, including many local—wines, craft beers, ciders, spirits and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages,” offers Linda Cantor, beverage coordinator and longtime event volunteer and co-chair. “Many of the

participating vendors support this great charity event year after year, helping create a welcoming and engaging tasting experience for attendees while supporting the charitable mission.”

This year’s co-chair Joanna Cox adds, “One new addition this year is our Wine Fridge Raffle, which we are really excited about. Guests will be able to purchase a key for $25, with one lucky key unlocking a wine fridge filled with 29 bottles of wine. Only 100 keys will be available, making it a fun and engaging way for attendees to participate while supporting the cause.”

At the end of the day, though, it really is about what is possible when a community comes together. “I believe strong communities are built by people who care enough to get involved,” says Cox. “A Taste of the Town is a celebration of our community, where guests, local businesses and volunteers all come together to support initiatives that make Collingwood stronger.”

Let’s all eat and drink to that!

Cobble Beach’s golf community offers residents a four-season, outdoor fun-and-games lifestyle in custom-built luxury homes.

The path to creating Cobble Beach, a premier golf community on the shores of Georgian Bay just north of Owen Sound, was not an easy trek. It began in 1998 when owner Rob McLeese’s father, Willis, who weekended in Heathcote, stumbled upon a great deal on a 232-hectare (574acre) property with over a kilometre and a half of shoreline just north of Owen Sound.

“So, my dad bought the property in 1998 and then said, ‘Well what are we going to do with it?’” recalls McLeese, who at the time had been about to purchase a property in Port Carling.

At first, the elder McLeese wanted to build a ski resort. But when the 85-yearold realized there wasn’t enough vertical drop, the idea for a golf community— with gorgeous views of the water from every hole—began to take shape.

Your dream project—built without drama. With inspired designs, expert craftsmanship, and seamless communication, we bring stunning structures to life across Ontario’s countryside. Let’s chat about making your vision a reality!
