Ontario Tech University acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. We are thankful to be welcomed on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered under the Williams Treaties and the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to a number of Indigenous nations and people. We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we remember the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home. This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

DR. STEVEN LIVINGSTONE Faculty of Science Dr. Steven Livingstone’s research explores the connection between emotion, technology and human health. Working at the intersection of data science, psychology and AI, he studies how emotions are expressed through facial movement, voice and physiological responses—and what those signals can reveal about cognition, communication and well-being. In Ontario Tech’s Affective Data Science Lab, Dr. Livingstone and his team use computational modelling, machine learning and experimental methods to develop technologies designed to recognize, predict and interpret emotion from multimodal human behaviour. Their work combines data from facial expressions, vocal acoustics and neurological and physiological changes to better understand how people experience and communicate emotion. His research also examines how neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, can affect emotional expression and communication. By studying facial and vocal changes, his team is helping advance approaches to rehabilitation and improve quality of life for individuals experiencing expressive deficits. For graduate students, Dr. Livingstone’s work offers opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary, research-intensive projects at the forefront of AI, health and human-centred computing.

DR. ISABEL PEDERSEN Faculty of Social Science and Humanities Dr. Isabel Pedersen is helping shape how we understand the rapidly evolving relationship between AI, digital platforms and human communication. As a professor in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities and Director of the Digital Life Institute, her research explores the cultural, ethical and social impact of emerging technologies. Her work increases our understanding of AI assistants and algorithmic systems while examining digital identity, online influence and the ways these technologies shape society. Her research directly ties into themes explored in our Master of Social Media Communication in Online Creators (MSMC) program. MSMC students gain insight into the systems shaping today’s creator economy, including AI-driven platforms, algorithmic visibility, digital storytelling and ethical content creation. As creators, brands and organizations increasingly integrate AI into their communication strategies, students develop the knowledge needed to navigate both the opportunities and ethical considerations surrounding these technologies. Dr. Pedersen’s expertise helps students move beyond trends to critically examine how AI tools and systems influence audience engagement, platform culture, authenticity and online trust. This prepares graduates to lead responsibly in a digital world increasingly shaped by intelligent technologies.
