Welcome Happy new year to you all As we write this we are one week away from Christmas, wondering where this year has gone and what 2026 will brings us all! Despite all the hustle and bustle before the big day we hope you managed to have a great Christmas and spend some quality time celebrating with friends and family and hopefully the waist line didn't suffer too much!!!

This years Baldock Christmas fair was a huge success again, it was nice to be involved with the set up this year.

I can honestly say, you do not realise how much work goes into hosting these events. Our youngest was in St Marys hall selling her Baked by Blondies treats and she was supper happy that she sold out.

A big thank you and a massive well done to Katy and Stuart Matthews, Tara Geere and all the other volunteers who helped to organise and arrange this year's event The Farmers on Christmas Light Tour returned to the High Street for the fifth time in so many years. This wonderful event as always was organised by local farmers in aid of Garden House Hospice Care. The tractor rally saw over 120 plus farm vehicles decorated with tinsel, lights and music. They started their parade in Baldock, and carried on through Letchworth , finishing off in Hitchin,

As always it was an incredible sight to see and all for a very worthwhile cause, all donations and sponsorship is directed to the Garden House Hospice. If you missed the collections on the night you can still text TRACTOR to 70460 to donate £5.

Traditionally the New Year brings new beginnings, a clean slate and the perfect opportunity to set some goals.

What will your New Year resolutions be this year? For us the goal will be to get more active again which seems to be on most people's list, Jacqui is talking about running a half marathon abroad any excuse for a holiday !!!

On the subject of getting active, the Baldock Beast is back in February! Perfect timing to sign up and give yourself a little extra motivation at the start of the year. Another Great Christmas Fayre Jane Evans Photography

The Baldock Christmas Fayre was back this year and it was great to see so many people out enjoying the Warm Up Party on the Friday night and the Fayre all day Saturday.

Friday's weather wasn't kind to us, but that didn't stop anyone having a good me. The heated marquee was busy all evening and kept everyone warm, while people enjoyed the live music, food, drinks and a proper fes ve catch-up.

Saturday made up for it, with a mild, dry day and there was a real buzz around the town. The High Street and stalls were busy all day, with loads of great stalls to browse, plenty of fes ve treats, fairground and a brilliant atmosphere wherever you went.

Simon the Snowman was a big hit once again, pu ng smiles on faces young and old and adding that extra bit of Christmas magic.

'Christmas T reecycling' Garden House Hospice Care will be running their annual Christmas Treecycling service For the eighth consecu ve year. A team of volunteers will collect and recycle real trees in exchange for a dona on to the Hospice.

Trees will be collected from Hitchin and surrounding towns and villages in postcodes SG1-9, SG15-18 and AL6.

Bookings must be made by midday on Sunday 4th January, and collec ons will take place from 8am on Wednesday 7th to 5pm on Sunday 11th January 2026. Trees will then be shredded and used in local community projects.

The Hospice needs support from the community this year more than ever. With funding levels at crisis point, Garden House need to raise as much as possible through fundraisers like this to ensure they can con nue to support those in need of their care. They have suggested the following dona on amounts: Ÿ £12 could pay for clean bedding and towels for our current pa ents, for one day Ÿ £22 could fund an hour of care on our Inpa ent Unit, for one pa ent Ÿ £35 could cover a return trip our in the minibus to a Rehab and Wellbeing ac vity Ÿ £50 could pay for one seated exercise session for ~33 people at a Wellbeing Hub Ÿ £102 could fund the travel costs for our Community team for one day.

Sandon JMI Swan-themed Tractor Pupils at Sandon JMI School rolled up their sleeves and unleashed their crea vity to help raise vital funds for charity by decora ng a tractor for the Farmers on Christmas Lights Tour.

Back for its 5th year, the event brough together farmers, families and local organisa ons aiming to raise £50,000 for Garden House Hospice. This year, Sandon JMI volunteered to take part and under the guidance of teachers and with support from local volunteers, the children designed a bevy of swans towing a tractor and sleigh. The tractor was provided by Lower Heath Farm, near Baldock. The theme chosen by the pupils is the symbol of their rural school and in keeping with its Forest School status.

Ricky Boxall, headteacher of Sandon JMI said: “We are incredibly proud of our pupils for their enthusiasm, teamwork and crea vity. Taking part in the Farmers on Christmas Lights Tour not only supports an important local charity but also gives our children a real sense of community spirit and achievement. They were so excited to take part. Seeing their artwork on a full-size tractor has not only helped them feel connected to the wider farming community but also proud to be helping others par cularly at this me of year.”

The Swan tractor joined over 100 fes ve farm vehicles and paraded through Baldock, Letchworth and Hitchin bringing magic to the towns a few days before Christmas.

Navigating Relationship Challenges After The Festive Break The holiday season is o en portrayed as a me of joy and togetherness, but the reality is that the intense period of spending me together, combined with financial pressures and high expecta ons, can bring underlying issues within a marriage to the forefront.

If the fes ve break has le you feeling uncertain about your future, you are not alone. January o en sees many people seeking advice on where they stand.

We spoke to Katharine Scoot, a specialist in family law at HRJ Foreman Laws, to answer some common ques ons and provide clarity on the divorce process.

Katharine, what happens during the divorce process?

Facing a divorce is an emo onally challenging me, especially when it comes to discussing the division of matrimonial assets and child arrangements. The current 'no-fault' divorce system is designed to make this process less confronta onal. By removing the need to assign blame for the breakdown of the marriage, we can help you focus on moving forward construc vely.

What is the criteria for a divorce?

To legally divorce in England and Wales, you must meet three simple criteria: Ÿ You have been married for over a year. Ÿ Your marriage has irretrievably broken down. Ÿ The courts of England and Wales have jurisdic on.

Since April 6, 2022, the introduc on of 'no-fault divorce' has been a welcome change.

This means you no longer need to assign blame for the marriage breakdown, helping to keep things as amicable as possible from the start.

How are divorce proceedings ini ated?

The first step is deciding how you want to apply. You can now choose to make a joint applica on with your spouse or a sole applica on. Ÿ Joint Applica on - If you apply together, you will need to wait 20 weeks from the date your applica on is acknowledged before you can apply for the next stage, the Condi onal Order. Ÿ Sole Applica on - If you apply on your own, the court sends your spouse the divorce applica on and an 'Acknowledgement of Service' form. They should respond within 14 days to say if they agree or dispute the proceedings. Once they agree, the same 20-week wai ng period applies before you can move to the Condi onal Order.

How long does the process take?

We know that once the decision is made, people o en want certainty.

The meline varies based on your individual circumstances, but generally, the process takes a minimum of 20 weeks to reach the Condi onal Order stage.

A er that, there is an addi onal wait of 6 weeks and 1 day before you can apply for the Final Order, which legally ends the marriage. Be aware that this period may extend if financial or other complexi es arise.

It is also important to know that the Final Order does not legally separate your finances.

To achieve a clean break and legally finalise the division of assets, you must obtain a separate Financial Consent Order approved by the court. We highly recommend this is done alongside your divorce, as without this legally binding order, either spouse could make a financial claim against the other in the future.

How will our finances be divided?

This is o en the biggest worry. It is important to know that there is no set formula for dividing assets.

Every family is different. Each case is assessed on its own individual merits to reach a se lement that is fair to both par es. Our goal is always to help you find the most amicable resolu on for your specific situa on.

Down Cemetery Road: – Ne lix Emma Thompson has one of those careers where you almost take her talent for granted, partly because she shows up more in films than on TV and partly because her public persona is so familiar that you forget how sharply she can shi gear when she wants to. As Zoë Boehm in this eight part thriller Down Cemetery Road she drops straight into a PI who feels tough, sharp and red of everyone's nonsense, and that mix turns out to be a perfect match for Mick Herron's first novel, here adapted by Morwenna Banks. Herron's name now leans heavily on Slow Horses and the cult around Jackson Lamb, so it's easy to see why people are already hoping Thompson's Boehm might grab a similar place in the public imagina on.

She plays her with no so ness and no sen ment, and one of the running jokes is how li le she cares about smoothing over awkward moments, which feels oddly refreshing when most TV detec ves are either saints or wrecks. Sarah Tucker is the case that drags her in, played by Ruth Wilson with the right mix of directness and simmering frustra on, and her comfortable but slightly stale marriage to Mark sets up a dinner party from hell where a neighbour's house blows up, killing two adults and injuring a child. Sarah tries to visit the girl, Dinah, only to run into a wall of hos lity from hospital

staff, and her confusion slides quickly into obsession, helped along by hints that she's had

struggles before. This brings her to Zoë and to Joe, Zoë's well meaning husband who does most of the legwork even though he's hopelessly out of his depth. The other thread sits inside the Ministry of Defence, where Hamza Malik looks close to breaking under the glare of his boss, a figure known only as C, played by Darren Boyd with a cold steadiness that makes every scene feel tense even when the script lets him fire off funny lines. The house blast was caused by a bomb planted by an off piste agent, and bringing him back into line while hiding the wider fallout gives this strand its own weight and momentum. What makes the show work is how ghtly everything is woven, since every scene pushes something forward and every character seems to ma er, especially Fehin Balogun as Amos, who keeps the spy plot moving, and Nathan Stewart Jarre , who appears at the edges at just the right moments. The adapta on trims the book and pulls Zoë in much earlier, which helps keep the focus secure while holding on to the dry humour that Herron readers expect. It moves fast without feeling rushed, the twists land cleanly, and the tone stays steady even as the stakes build. It's sharp, controlled and oddly funny in places, and for viewers who struggle with the grime that coats much of Slow Horses there's a small extra comfort in knowing that Zoë at least seems to know how washing machines work.

Smart Serenity Awaits New Citroen e-C5 Aircross

This MG stands out in the compact crossover SUV (C-SUV) category - not necessarily for its looks - but for its ample space, well-designed interior.

Furthermore, with an impressive five-star Euro NCAP ra ng, the MGS6 EV certainly has a significant safety advantage.

So, following the recent launch of the MG IM6 SUV, the MGS6 EV represents an important milestone for the now Chinese-owned brand. But how does it perform on the road? Let's delve into the details.

The MGS6 EV marks MG's eighth allelectric vehicle in the UK and is the third model built on the Modular Scalable Pla orm, which debuted with the MG4 EV. From the front, the MGS6 EV features a contemporary aesthe c characterised by a split grille design, integrated high and low-beam ligh ng, and a new day me running light signature.

Side-on, you'll no ce silver roof rails, privacy glass, and a prominent shoulder line. At the rear, the lower bumper is adorned with silver accents, and an integrated roof spoiler features a brake light.

Also, an eye-catching full-length central light bar is cleverly placed beneath the MG badge to enhance the vehicle's electric range.

Thanks to the ultra-thin ba ery technology used in the MGS6 EV, coupled with the Modular Scalable Pla orm's adaptability, this vehicle comfortably accommodates a family of five.

Passengers in both the front and rear will enjoy excellent comfort, with generous leg and knee room, while heated front seats come standard across all three models. What's more, with a boot space of 674 litres that expands to 1,910 litres when the rear seats are folded down, you won't need to worry about packing light. Addi onally, there's a front 'frunk' offering up to 124 litres of cargo capacity.

A choice of colours and materials ensures that the MG's interior isn't just prac cal but also pleasing. Grey leatherstyle and suede-style seats are available, complemented by a carbon-effect trim or a beige op on featuring a naturaleffect trim. Trophy models also include a panoramic sunroof to boost the cabin's natural light.

The interior is further elevated by a dual-screen setup, comprising a floa ng 12.8-inch HD touchscreen and

a 10.25-inch HD driver display, complete with three selectable themes.

MG states that the MGS6 EV aims to deliver remarkable power and performance across its three dis nct versions. This is par cularly true of the MGS6 EV Trophy Dual Motor that we had the chance to drive at its launch event.

The all-wheel drive (AWD) variant delivers 361PS, enabling it to reach 62mph in a brisk 5.1 seconds. The AWD system kicks in when trac on becomes ques onable, providing decent stability in various driving situa ons.

While the MG does roll if pushed too hard into bends, it s ll delivers a pre y thrilling burst of speed on the straights.

There are also two other variants of the MGS6 EV: the SE Long Range, with a single-motor power output of 245PS and a combined range of 329 miles.

Meanwhile, the Trophy Long Range shares the same range and poke but enhances the driving experience with more advanced comfort and entertainment features. These rearwheel drive models can also achieve 062mph in a respectable 7.3 seconds, with all models having a top speed restricted to 124mph.

Addi onal features include five energy recovery modes, including a one-pedal driving op on, ensuring versa lity in different driving condi ons. Plus, the MGS6 EV offers five drive modes – Normal, Sport, Comfort, Custom, and Snow – that contribute to a generally assured and engaging drive.

The 77kWh ba ery provides an impressive driving range of up to 329 miles for the single-motor rear-wheel drive versions, while the all-wheel drive Trophy Dual Motor offers up to 301 miles.

MG claims the SUV boasts an aerodynamic drag coefficient of just 0.27.

Notable design features include an ac ve grille shu er system at the front, paired with front wheel deflectors and lowresistance aero wheel covers, collec vely improving electric range by almost an addi onal 30 miles. All models can be rapidly charged from 10 to 80% in just 38 minutes when using public fast chargers.

The MGS6 EV builds on the founda on laid by successful models like the MG4 EV hatchback while drawing inspira on from spor er Mgs like the Cyberster conver ble.

With MG's reputa on as one of the

UK's best-selling EV manufacturers, you can feel confident in your investment in this vehicle. The SE Long Range starts at £37,995, with the Trophy Long Range at £40,995, and the Trophy Dual Motor priced at £43,995.

While it isn't the most affordable electric vehicle on the market, the MGS6 EV cks many boxes for those seeking a spacious electric car for family use.

2025 POPPY APPEAL Great people of Baldock, once again I'm here expressing my thanks to you all.

The poppy appeal was a roaring success in raising well needed funds for the Royal Bri sh Legion.

This year we raised a massive £18,592.91!!! For our lovely li le town this is awesome.

For those that are not aware the RBL support anyone who has served for just 1 day. The majority of people being helped at the moment are in the 40's!!! Yes that's right 40's! These people tend to have young families and they are all struggling to come to terms with their service. So any small dona on anyone can do is gratefully received.

Thank You to the Local Community Baldock Rotary was again extremely pleased to be able to con nue its longstanding tradi on of taking Father Christmas on his sleigh, together with the Elves, around the streets of Baldock and surrounding villages.

As you may know Santa had a few teething problems with his new sleigh this year, however, the elves put their thinking hats on to resolve the problems and this helped Santa con nue his very busy schedule.

We know how much this event is enjoyed by children and adults alike and the Club was extremely pleased with the recep on and comments received.

Thank you to everyone who supported Baldock Rotary Club during this period with their me and effort. As well as Rotary members and their wives and partners, a number of community groups and members of the community gave their me to assist. We thank you all for your valued contribu on.

The Rotary club collec on at Christmas is the major fundraising event of the year and the money received will enable the club to make valuable dona ons to

our supported local charitable causes as well as contribu ng to na onal and interna onal ini a ves, such as the Rotary Interna onal worldwide programme for the eradica on of polio, which is close to having achieved its goal.

Baldock Rotary club also appreciates the kind words that have been said about the Christmas lights around Baldock town centre. This ac vity takes a significant amount of me, effort and investment by the Rotary club. Thanks, again, go to those members of the community who have supported the club in this ac vity. Baldock Gardens

In the past few months, several new gardeners have asked for advice on what to grow, when to plant, and most importantly, how to get started.

Let me start by saying that this time of year is not the time to be stomping about in your new garden or allotment, as you will damage your soil structure. I realise that you could have some winter crops remaining. By all means, harvest them if you can, but put some wooden boards down to walk on, or wait for the soil to dry out. Instead, use this time productively by observing your plot, taking notes on its current condition, and planning your garden layout. Sketch ideas of what you want your garden to look like, and research which plants thrive in your soil type and light conditions.

Assessing Your Plot Once the weather improves and the soil dries out, your first task is to assess what you have. Walk around your allotment and note the sunny and shady areas, as this will influence where you can grow. Most vegetables need at least six hours of sunlight daily, while leafy greens can tolerate partial shade. Check the soil type by feeling it—sandy soil drains quickly, clay soil holds water and feels heavy, while loamy soil (the ideal) crumbles nicely in your hand.

Look for any existing structures, such as sheds, compost bins, or water butts, that you can use. Note where the water source is located, as this will be one of your most frequent destinations. If there are perennial weeds such as bindweed, couch grass, or brambles, mark these areas, as they will need special attention before planting. To help you recognise these common weeds: bindweed typically has heart-shaped leaves and white trumpet-shaped flowers; couch grass appears as dense grass with roughedged leaves and creeping rhizomes; brambles are characterised by their prickly stems and can produce blackberries if left to mature.

Planning Your Layout Before you plant anything, sketch a simple plan of your plot. Divide your space into plant beds, ideally about 1.3 metres wide, so you can reach the centre from either side without stepping on the soil.

Leave paths between beds wide enough for a wheelbarrow, around 45-60cm. Consider crop rotation when planning. Divide your growing area into at least three sections and

rotate crops annually: one section for brassicas (cabbage family), one for legumes (beans and peas), and one for roots and alliums (carrots, potatoes, onions). This helps prevent soil-borne diseases and pest buildup. A fourth section for permanent crops, such as rhubarb, asparagus, or soft fruit, is also useful.

Think about positioning tall crops like runner beans and sweet corn on the north side of your plot so they don't shade shorter plants. Place herbs and salads near the entrance for quick harvesting.

Soil Preparation and Improvement Properly prepared soil is the foundation of successful growing. If your plot has been neglected, it will likely need to be enriched with organic matter. Well-rotted manure, garden compost, or composted green waste all work wonderfully. Aim to add a 5-10cm layer and fork it into the top 15-20cm of soil.

If you're dealing with heavy clay, add horticultural grit or sharp sand along with organic matter to improve drainage. Sandy soils benefit from ample compost to retain moisture and nutrients.

For areas overwhelmed with perennial weeds, consider covering them with thick cardboard or landscape fabric weighted down with wood or bricks. Leave this for several months to kill off the weeds before planting. This is far easier than trying to dig out every root.

What to Grow as a Beginner Start with crops that are reliable, productive, and relatively easy to grow. This builds confidence and ensures you'll have something to harvest.

Easy vegetables to begin with include: Ÿ Potatoes: Plant in March or April, and they'll help break up the soil while giving you a satisfying harvest Ÿ Runner beans and French beans: Sow in May, and they'll produce abundantly through summer Ÿ Courgettes: One or two plants will keep you supplied from July onwards Ÿ Salad leaves: Quick-growing and perfect for successional sowing Ÿ Radishes: Ready in just a few weeks and great for filling gaps Ÿ Onions and garlic: Plant sets (small bulbs) rather than seeds for easier success Ÿ For fruit, consider: Ÿ Strawberries: Easy to grow in the ground or containers Ÿ Rhubarb: A permanent crop that

requires little maintenance

Ÿ Raspberries: Summer or autumn-fruiting

varieties are both rewarding

Ÿ Blackcurrants or redcurrants: Productive

bushes that last for years Avoid temperamental crops like aubergines or melons in your first year—they need more experience and often require greenhouse protection.

Essential Tools and Equipment You don't need to spend a fortune on tools. Start with these basics: Ÿ A spade for digging Ÿ A fork for breaking up soil Ÿ A rake for levelling beds Ÿ A hoe for weeding Ÿ Trowel for planting Ÿ Watering can or hose Ÿ Garden twine and canes for supporting plants Ÿ A wheelbarrow for moving materials You'll also need seed trays, pots, and labels A small cold frame or cloche is useful for hardening off seedlings and protecting early crops.

Getting Started: January to March Although it's too wet to work the soil in January, there's still plenty to do. This is the perfect time to: Ÿ Order seeds from catalogues while varieties are still in stock Ÿ Plan your crop rotation and draw up planting schedules Ÿ Clean and repair tools and equipment Ÿ Build or repair raised beds if you're using them Ÿ Start chitting seed potatoes indoors from late February

By March, as the soil begins to warm and dry, you can start preparing beds and sowing hardy crops like broad beans, peas, onion sets, and shallots. Sow seeds indoors for tomatoes, peppers, and other tender crops that will be planted out after the last frost.

Final Thoughts Gardening is learned by doing. You'll make mistakes, lose crops to slugs or weather, and discover that some things simply won't grow in your particular spot.

Keep notes on what you plant and when, what succeeds and what fails. Every season teaches you something new.

Start with a manageable area, grow crops you'll actually eat, and expand gradually as you gain confidence.

Archie Davies from Scorpio Motorsport *Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi my name is Archie Davies, I’m a 16-year-old Bri sh racing driver preparing for my first single-seater season in the GB4 Championship with Scorpio Motorsport. A er moving from kar ng at the age of 14, I spent the past two seasons compe ng in the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championship, where I developed strong race cra and experience in highly compe ve grids.

Away from the track, my passion for motorsport con nues through working on and cleaning cars as part of a side business I run with a friend, as well as working at my local go-kart track in Letchworth, helping and mentoring young drivers in the same way I was supported early in my career. Alongside racing, I study mechanics and engineering at college, allowing me to strengthen my technical understanding of cars and apply it directly to my driving. This is complemented by regular gym and simulator training, ensuring I am fully prepared physically and mentally for the demands of single-seater racing *What first inspired you to get into racing, and how old were you when you started?

Always having a passion for speed & cars from such a young age I always knew it's something I loved very early on but my dad taking me to f1 or very early go kar ng par es was definitely the beginning. *At 16, you're already compe ng at a high level — what keeps you mo vated day to day?

The love for the sport, wan ng to improve & racing just being part of who I am definitely helps to drive me forward. *Which drivers do you look up to, and what have you learned from studying them?

Again from watching racing with my dad from the early days it has to be Lewis Hamilton, Alonso, Sebas an etc… & also David Pi ard a local endurance driver who races for Aston Mar n.

There's always things to take on board from each of these drivers but more about how they behave on and off the track & how dedicated to their cra they are even a er all these years. *What's been the biggest learning curve for you so far in your racing career?

Definitely the low points, being in p1 and loosing the rear at brands hatch in my final fiesta race. Rolling my car at Thruxton was a huge mental obstacle also having to come from the back the next day p25 to p8 which was amazing for braking that mental barrier. *How do you balance school responsibili es with training and race weekends?

I always struggled at school, I've always found it hard to focus unless I'm in a kart, car or race car. Being alone behind the wheel just seems to bring the best out of me & where I feel the most natural. Since I've moved to college learning has become easier & they're very accommoda ng with my racing which is greatly appreciated. *What part of your driving do you feel has improved the most over the past year?

I would say my confidence has improved the most in the past 12 months which has come with speed, winning & ge ng podiums.

Although I learn each me I step in the car feel confidence is huge to a racing driver.

*Can you describe a moment when something clicked and you realized you were improving as a racer?

I was at Oulton Park in the FJC in my first year in the championship & remember speaking to my dad a er the race explaining how rota ng the car into corners had just come with a flip of the switch. It really was a lightbulb moment & I remember it like it was yesterday. *How do you stay calm and focused before a race, especially when the pressure is high?

I genuinely like to be around my team & teammates heading into a race. When it's me to head to the assembly area this instantly changes as I like to have no further contact with anyone un l a er the race. *What's the toughest challenge you face when compe ng against older or more experienced drivers?

I've raced against some talented older drivers which genuinely felt very natural. I think their race cra & especially defence can take some ge ng used to but overall I prefer to race against higher level opponents as I feel it helps me improve greatly. *How do you handle setbacks, like a bad race or mechanical issue?

This hits pre y hard at first but the more it happens the more accustomed you become to it. It never takes away that ini al sinking feeling but I try to move on as quickly as possible from it. *What aspects of car setup do you already feel confident giving feedback on?

In the FJC especially going into year two I felt I knew when the car needed a tweak in terms of ride height/so ening+hardening the suspension but especially the rear. General issues the team may miss as some of the small loses I believe can only be felt by the driver at that level which happened on many occasions. *Do you have a preferred driving style, and how would you describe it?

So my style from what driver coaches tell me is (Smooth) & I think that's why single seaters should suit me perfectly.

I definitely don't have a preference on style but smooth is quite clearly mine & it's pre y self explanatory of how I like to go racing. *Who has been the most influen al person in your racing journey so far?

I would say my family in general for always turning up & suppor ng me. Also my dad who seems to help make the right decisions at the right me which has been huge in ge ng sponsorship etc. *What's one thing people don't see behind the scenes that is crucial to your performance?

Lots of sim work, reac on training & gym work. *Where do you hope your racing career will take you in the next five years?

In the next five years like most racers & dreamers I'd love to be in f1. Next up a er gb4 will be gb3 f2 & so on but I'm very realis c & understand how hard we work for funding already so i have a sports car direc on into Porsche, gt4/gt3 & so on!

Racing in lemans is also a huge dream for me.

Baldock's Forgotten Phone Kiosk In April 2025, the red, grade II listed phone booth on Baldock High Street was only weeks away from being disconnected and removed forever.

Luckily, the joint efforts of The Baldock Beer Fest, Balstock Music Fes val and The Baldock Events Forum stepped in to purchase, or “adopt”, this iconic landmark from BT. The empty booth is currently being used to house a Christmas tree, as we now invite any ideas for the ongoing use of Baldock's own phone kiosk. We especially want fresh, imagina ve and (dare we say) quirky ideas. Something a li le more original than a book exchange or defibrillator (there is already a defibrillator and library right next to the kiosk).

Some sugges ons have already included –world's smallest pub, world's smallest disco or coin operated marble run! These plans do not need to be permanent and we can also request electricity be fed into the booth from Bri sh Telecom.

the season so far It has been a highly successful first half to the season for our local rugby club and North Herts leading team playing at the equivalent level of Division 4 in soccer parlance . With one game to go before the Xmas break against bo om club Her ord. The Letchworth Legends lie second in the table only six points behind leaders Colchester and nine points ahead of their leading chasers led by Southend on Sea .

The stats show the success Played 12 Won 10 lost 2, with nearly 500 points scored and only 150 against . In fact the team could be in pole posi on but for a narrow loss at Colchester 28-24 when many , even the home spectators , thought they were the be er side . The return game at Legends lane on March 7th could well decide the tle .

The team have prospered from good coaching from Bas Basra and playing coaches skipper Josh Sharp and Llewelyn Jones as well as the two Toms … Ansell and Jubb .

Also, it is now a very se led side who know each other very well and play to their strengths which is exci ng a acking rugby which this season has been led by the two Baldock brothers Charlie and Josh Parkhouse both who have a hat full of tries between them . New boy Brendon Marume has also impressed at full back with electrifying pace .

However it must be remembered that the spine of the side have been playing together for nearly 10 years when they were suffering defeat three leagues below but have stuck to their task and they include club captain Oscar Robinson, Conor Turner, Rambo Hughes, Tommy

Wee, Liam Fi s, Luke Mongston, and Chris Gibbs. They are now reaping the reward for those early disappoin ng seasons and this is reflected in their selec on for the county in 2025 . Also feisty hooker Tim Hughes has just been awarded his 50th Cap whilst new faces Adam Green , Frazer Mc Gown and Maximus Trimble have all impressed . A word too for number eight Tom Lewis who has travelled from Peterborough for the past five years and is definitely the best Eight in this league.. alongside Llewellyn Jones and Skipper Sharp they are a formidable combina on.

A word to for the second team now branded as the 1924s who are playing against other first teams in their league.

They have been disappointed by some very narrow results including a 33-31 defeat at the weekend to Tabard … once the county's leading ou it.

Also under second team and Colts coach Adam Amos the club is developing a real future with 50 or so under 18s this year a few who are playing some Senior rugby … and enjoying it !

I look forward to seeing more of you on match days at our new clubhouse, home games are as follows.

We were delighted to par cipate in the Baldock Christmas Fayre. Our tree in the fes val was decorated with gi s of chocolate and toiletries donated by members, the gi s were immediately transferred to the Food Bank at the close. We also held a bake sale which raised £435.00, an increase on last year! The money raised will be divided between our charity for this year, Midshires Rescue, and our funds.

We were fortunate to receive a dona on from Tesco Community Support to help with the cost of ingredients, a great help for the bakers.

The WI is an organisa on for all women with no poli cal or religious affilia on. Baldock and Clothall branch meet in the evening of the second Thursday of the month at the United Reform Church. Visitors are allowed to a end 3 mes before joining. We enjoy several social evenings throughout the year, coming up is the Christmas party, and also a variety of speakers entertain us. January's mee ng is Bingo night!

Roasted Winter Vegetable Soup Happy New Year from all of us at Eight here in Baldock. As we open the doors to 2026, we're filled with excitement for what the year has in store.

Behind the scenes, the team and I have been working on new menus, special producer-led events and a series of seasonal wine supper clubs that celebrate the craft, creativity and ingredientfocused cooking at the heart of what we do at Eight.

January may be the industry's quietest month, but to us it's a time of renewal, an opportunity to slow down, cook thoughtfully, and reconnect with the community that supports us so generously.

To kick off the new year, I wanted to share a recipe that feels particularly connected to our kitchen at Eight (and one the editors specifically requested after trying it at a recent local business owners' event): a Roasted Winter Vegetable Soup.

It's exactly the sort of dish we love, rooted in seasonality, built around great local produce and full of warmth and depth from slow, careful roasting.

It's simple, nourishing, unfussy and—most importantly—delicious. I hope it brings a little of Eight's comfort and flavour into your home.

Roasted Winter Vegetable Soup Serves 4 Preheat the oven to 200°C (fan 180°C). Ÿ Carrots – 400g, peeled and roughly chopped Ÿ Parsnips – 300g, peeled and roughly chopped Ÿ Leeks – 250g, cleaned and sliced Ÿ Celeriac – 300g, peeled and diced Ÿ Onion – 1 large (approx. 200g), peeled and quartered Ÿ Garlic – 4 cloves, peeled Ÿ Olive oil – 3 tbsp Ÿ Fresh thyme – 3 sprigs Spread all the chopped vegetables and garlic cloves across a large roasting tray . Season generously, then drizzle with olive oil and tuck the thyme sprigs in between. Toss well to coat.

Roast for 35–40 minutes, turning once. You want deep golden edges—the kind of caramelisation that gives the soup its signature richness. Ÿ Vegetable stock – 1.2 litres Transfer to a large saucepan, removing the thyme stalks. Pour in the vegetable stock, bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 10 minutes. Ÿ Unsalted butter – 20g Ÿ Salt – 1.5 tsp, or to taste Ÿ Freshly ground black pepper – ½ tsp Ÿ Optional: cream – 50ml

Add the butter, then blend until smooth. Whisk in the cream if using, and adjust the seasoning as needed. I like to add a drizzle of honey at this point for a little hint of sweetness. *Optional garnish: toasted seeds, chopped herbs, or a drizzle of a good finishing oil Serve immediately with some crusty rolls or sourdough bread.

Tip: This is a fantastic way to use up any leftover veg that's looking a little tired.

Vegan swap: Use olive oil instead of butter and coconut milk in place of the cream.

This soup is a perfect January dish—comforting without being heavy, wholesome without ever being dull, and a real celebration of winter produce from our brilliant local growers.

St Mary's Juniors Sports Report As the saying goes, “When life gives you mud… play winter sports instead!”

And that's exactly what we've been doing at St. Mary's over the past month.

With the fields resembling a swamp and the playground a emp ng to become a swimming pool, we've leaned fully into our two trusty winter heroes: netball and football. Every child in Years 5 and 6 who wanted to represent the school has proudly pulled on the St. Mary's colours and stepped out onto a court or pitch—some mes in condi ons that would make penguins shiver.

Across friendlies and tournaments alike, our pupils played brilliantly. They picked up new skills, sharpened old ones, and—most importantly—showed off some truly outstanding teamwork.

The respect they showed was a highlight: three cheers every match, handshakes all round, and smiles that somehow survived even the chilliest a ernoons.

Year 4 also got to experience wearing

A Magical Christmas Market at Weston Way Nursery! the St Mary's colours this month, taking part in a fes ve Dance event in Letchworth. They danced their way through the a ernoon and le happily exhausted. The kind of red that only comes from having far too much fun for far too long!

Inside school, our inter-house compe ons have kept the excitement going. All four house colours have claimed victories in different events, scooping up house points and showing fantas c sportsmanship along the way.

The enthusiasm has been infec ous, and the compe ve spirit—friendly, of course—has been a joy to watch.

It's been a packed, posi ve, energe c term of extracurricular fun, and we're already looking forward to the many different sports we have coming up in the new year.

Earlier in the month, we were very grateful to our local firefighters for taking the me, despite the rainy weather!, to visit our nursery.

The children enjoyed speaking with the firefighters and learning about their important role in our community. They were especially delighted to each have an opportunity to sit inside the fire engine.

We extend our sincere thanks to the firefighters for providing such a memorable learning experience for our adventurers!
