The kids are finally back at school and with some luck you’ve had the chance to settle back into your own daily routine. School life isn’t quite back to ‘normal’ but hopefully having live lessons and seeing friends again outweigh the new safe practices and restrictions they have to follow. If you’ re worried about how your child is coping, read our article for advice on how to spot signs of mental stress. Coming up to winter and Christmas, we felt it important to feature local charities that support the homeless or people living in poverty. Since the pandemic, there has been a huge rise in demand for their services. As a community, we can help by donating items, money or our time. We pledge to donate a bag of food or essential items for every advert booked in the next issue! What can you do? Lockdown will undoubtedly get tighter over the coming weeks, but we hope you enjoy the beautiful autumn season and getting ready for Christmas!

Health & Wellbeing

Back to School...

Back to Normal? If you have school-aged children you may have found the last month challenging with our loved ones returning to school during the pandemic. My two boys were nervous, but excited, to get back to school after six months of not seeing friends and actually keen to get back into learning in real live classes and not online. Things are certainly different; from wearing masks on the school bus, being bubbled in year groups and not being able to play freely as they used to. Even as teenagers my boys need the freedom to run around and to burn off their excess energy and they found it a shock to get back to such a restrictive regime. They almost wanted to return to home schooling again! I did hope that over time, things would ease but even as I write this (we are only into the 2nd week of school), restrictions seem to be getting tighter and school children across Salford and Manchester are already being sent home to self isolate.

keep safe. So how can you tell if your child is struggling and how can you help? Signs of anxiety Physical signs may include: Headaches and upset stomachs Tiredness Sleep problems and nightmares Behavioural signs may include: Lack of motivation Feeling overwhelmed Irritability or angry outbursts Over or under eating Social withdrawal Obsessive thoughts or behaviours

We’re all getting used to a new kind of normal and our children are no exception. New data from Public Health England (PHE) revealed that Covid-19 has caused an increase in anxiety in young people, and a third of young people aged 8-24 reported being more worried, sad and stressed than before lockdown.

What can you do to help? Manage your own stress and anxiety. Children will pick up on your signals and follow your lead. Encourage your children to discuss any worries with you and research the facts. News stories are good at catastrophising and the truth is often reassuring! Help your children to switch their focus from what’s going wrong to what’s going well. One way to do this is to ask what’s been good about their day at school instead of how their day was. Limit their exposure to the news and social media. Bad news can overwhelm us, and our brains need to relax and switch off. Have a cut off point 2 hours before bed. Encourage a good night-time routine, sleep is so important because it’s when we process our stresses from the day. Encourage activities and hobbies they enjoy where they can switch off from their worries, such as music or sport.

That’s no surprise. Our brains are programmed to be fearful of change and uncertainty – it’s how we

It’s worrying as a parent to see how this will all pan out, but the impact on children’s mental health also cannot be ignored. School is one of the key focal points in our children’s lives, giving them stability, meaning, self-worth, esteem, and a purpose. How will the new measures and disruption to school life affect them? Different age groups will be affected differently. We asked local expert Caroline Simmons for advice on how to spot the tell-tale signs that their mental wellbeing is at risk and what can we do to help... MENTAL HEALTH IN CHILDREN

Children, aged two to five, across our 52 nurseries in the north west and midlands have walked, stomped, and hopped to raise funds as part of our Summer Stampede campaign.

Spirit of Salford

COMMUNITY Awards 2021

THANK YOU

Salford s chance to say

The Spirit of Salford Community Awards will be back in March 2021. It’s your chance to say thanks to all those who have given exceptional support during an exceptional year. The awards celebrate people and groups who have made a significant difference to Salford and shown the true Spirit of Salford. The 2021 awards will focus on how everyone pulled together to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and the unique challenges it threw up. In March, as the country went into lockdown and vulnerable people were advised to shield, the public, private, voluntary and community sectors came together as never before to rise to the unprecedented challenge. The Spirit of Salford helpline was launched within 48 hours and an army of volunteers, private sector organisations and community groups came forward to respond to the city’s needs. NHS staff, care workers and key front-line workers kept people safe and maintained essential services while hundreds of people worked tirelessly to get food and medicine out to vulnerable people or stepped up to offer support. From showing people how to use digital technology to stay in touch, to a weekly, friendly chat to keep people’s spirits up, to delivering much needed essential items to walking people’s dogs when they couldn’t get out, Salford came together to show what makes our city so special. Now it’s your chance to recognise and thank them. Nominations can be made at: www.spiritofsalfordawards.info The deadline for nominations is 20 November 2020 by 5pm. 8 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Local Charity

Salford Survivor Project

LAUNCH THEIR FIRST CHARITY SHOP Salford Survivor Project, voted Charity of the Year 2019 by Salford Volunteers, opened their first Charity shop on Saturday 22nd August. The grand opening was celebrated with glasses of bubbly and tears as the parents and family members of some of Salford's victims of abuse cut the ceremonial ribbon to the shop in memory of loved ones. The families included those of Dean Darvill, Leanne McNuff, Linzi Ashton, Becky Ayres, Nicki Campbell and Olivia Humphreys who sadly passed away on 15th July this year. Butterflies Inspired by Angels is a charity shop with a difference. Butterflies represent gaining freedom wings, inspired by those who gained their angels wings through abuse. The shop at 480 Liverpool Road Eccles, an Aladdin's cave, hopes to raise vital funds to continue the much needed support system for those affected by family or domestic abuse. It will continue to raise awareness of abuse and be a stepping stone for those referred to the project to choose items for their house, clothing, books and

toys in addition to nappies, food and basic essentials. CEO Jane Gregory explained, "Salford Survivor was established to empower people to make positive changes to their lives. We give people a helping hand. Those in need can choose what they want, not be given things they may never use. It’s important that people are allowed to keep their dignity. No one chooses to live in poverty and hardship. Those needing our help can call on us anytime without judgement." Salford Survivor Project and the shop can be contacted 7 days a week 10am till 10pm. We support those who need advice, guidance or just a listening ear in a confidential, non judgemental way. All volunteers are survivors of abuse and understand fully how difficult it is to open up about abuse. T: 0161 706 0468 www.thesurvivorproject.co.uk

Community Feature

Hair, Beauty & Lockdown in Roe Green Traditionally, providing a safe space for clients to relax and unwind, and to escape the stresses of daily life, lockdown has caused the biggest upheaval in living memory for local hair & beauty salons. Independently run by local people and present in every village, they are core to our communities. In the small village of Roe Green, 5 out of 8 shops here are well established Hair and Beauty salons which have all been here for a minimum of 9 years: • Hair Eden: Hair & Brows • Dynamics: Hair • Roe Green Barbers: Hair • Salon Vert: Hair & Beauty • Worsley Laser Clinic: Beauty, Skincare & Aesthetics After having to close at the height of the pandemic, hair salons were able to reopen on 4th July, with beauty following on 13th July. Whilst great news for local salon owners, they had to navigate through many challenges to welcome back clients safely i.e. staffing, spacing, government safety guidelines, dealing with large backlogs, prioritising client bookings and more...! Now, a couple of months on, we asked a few of our clients what it has been like to be back in business. “Since we re-opened in July it has been non-stop, but we’ve absolutely loved being back! We’ve understandably had to change a few things in the salon which includes extended opening hours to allow us to Jane: spread out appointments across Hair Eden the week so that there are less people in the salon at any one time. When we closed in March we started to offer free delivery for those buying hair products from our shop, and we’re continuing this now we have reopened as it was so successful. We have plenty of availability throughout autumn

and in the run up to Christmas for those still looking for appointments, and we’ll soon have our coveted Christmas gift packs back in stock.” “We are so happy to be back in the salon after lockdown; it has been such a difficult time for most of us, and although we had precious time to spend with our families we are looking forward to the future. We have Dawn: our new apprentice Gabrielle Worsley Laser who has joined us post lockdown too, so we just want to get back to the ‘new normal’ as soon as possible. Now we are able to carry out facial treatments, we are pleased to be offering our signature ‘Christmas Pamper Packages’ again this year - the perfect treat in the hectic run-up to the festive season; they make an excellent gift for a loved one, or we also offer Gift Vouchers so clients can choose their own treatment!” “At Salon Vert, we’ve been working really hard to keep everyone safe. Business was going well and we started to get really busy when Boris announced facial treatments could resume on 15th August. Stef: Then all of a sudden we were Salon Vert hit by the ‘local lockdown’ and all face treatments had to be cancelled! It’s definitely been a testing time and it’s hard to predict what will happen next, but for now face treatments are back again and we look forward to a brighter future! We have taken many Christmas bookings in September already, so if you need to make an appointment, plan ahead, book early and avoid disappointment!” ON OUR DOORSTEP 15

Dental at MediaCityUK:

THRILLED TO WELCOME BACK OUR PATIENTS The team here at Dental at MediaCityUK are thrilled to be welcoming back our patients following a testing time for everyone and we’re embracing a significant change to how dentistry will be carried out. One thing that remains the same is our stature within the orthodontics field. Shortly before lockdown, our principal dentist Deepa Vakil was selected to sit on the board of general practitioners for Invisalign UK who offer the most advanced teeth straightening system. This is a particularly prestigious role as the small team is made up of just ten experts who will help to shape the future of Invisalign’s orthodontic treatments both in the UK and globally.

according to your treatment plan, until you reach your beautiful new smile. Following your Invisalign treatment, we would often start a course of pain-free, bespoke teeth whitening treatments, used to lift off marks and stains whilst lightening any discolouration from the tooth enamel and dentin and achieve the best possible all-round results for your smile, ensuring that the colour looks natural and is in keeping with your skin tone.

We are also immensely proud of being awarded our Diamond Status, received for treating over 150 patients with Invisalign in a twelve-month period.

Often used by our celebrity clients within the practice, Enlighten Tooth Whitening is a patented home and in surgery bleaching system using the latest technology leaving you with guaranteed white teeth.

If you have spent the last few months thinking about how you may be able to improve the appearance of your smile, we’re only too happy to help discuss your options and produce a suitable plan for achieving your ideal look.

So, if you’d like to meet with the team and discuss how we can achieve your perfect smile, please get in touch and we can arrange an appointment as soon as possible.

An alternative to the traditional metal braces that can sometimes be unsightly, completely invisible and comfortable to wear, Invisalign braces can totally transform a smile in as little as six months and as Diamond providers, you’d be in the best possible hands with Dental at MediaCityUK.

At your first consultation, Deepa will evaluate your smile and map out a precise, customised digital treatment plan that showcases the step-by-step transformation of your smile. Once the plan is approved, your unique aligners will be created from moulds of your teeth. You will wear each set of aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, changing to a new set every 1 to 2 weeks. planning for the Future Will and Probate Services are a specialist paralegal law firm who deal exclusively with the issues that concern us all in later life, Will Writing, Probate and Estate Planning are at the core of our services and since 2005 we have advised thousands of clients in the country. Everyone needs to have the right Will in place, yet most people leave the future of their assets to chance. Equally Lasting Powers of Attorney are a cornerstone of later life planning, but many people have made no provision for them to manage their affairs if they become sick or lose capacity. If you have suffered a bereavement our Probate services are a cost-effective alternative to using a solicitor or bank to deal with the estate. We take the pressure off and always work to an understandable fixed fee. As we get older, we naturally tend to become richer so the right planning for Inheritance Tax and care provision needs to be put in place, yet again most people will leave this fundamental planning undone.

We also deal with the Court of Protection if a relative has lost capacity and can offer a professional and low-cost estate administration and probate service if you have suffered a bereavement. Funeral plans can be an important part of wealth planning in later life and we offer a selection from the biggest providers in the UK. Call Will and Probate Services today and get your later life plan in place. The Trussell Trust Foodbanks

SIX EMERGENCY FOOD PARCELS EVERY MINUTE Our new research shows that food banks in our network are forecast to give out a staggering six emergency food parcels every minute this winter. More families need help as Covid-19 continues to hit people’s incomes. Providing emergency food to local people in crisis... Salford Foodbank is operated by the Trussell Trust, which was founded in 1997 with a legacy that was left by Betty Trussell. Starting in one garden shed, there are now over 1,200 Trussell Trust Foodbanks in the UK.

New Distribution Points are being added all the time. People with Foodbank Voucher Codes can access food from: Swinton Gateway St Andrew's, Eccles GoChurch, Salford M50 2GF St Philips, Chapel Street Salford Loaves and Fishes To find out more visit:

www.salford.foodbank.org.uk

Last year, Salford faced major challenges with warehouse space, a lack of funding and the need for new leadership. What a turnaround since then! A fresh injection of management, new partnerships, major funding and a generous gift by Peel Land of the use of a warehouse and offices near Media City, has meant that the foodbank has found itself in a strong position to meet the unexpected demands of the pandemic and been able to continue to serve the people of Salford throughout this challenging time. Many new volunteers joined the team during lockdown. New volunteers are always welcome! As the pandemic continues, demand for services grow. Referrals for food parcels can be made via doctors, health visitors and social workers. If you’d like to donate, non perishable items are ideal such as: Tinned Meat & Pies • Tinned Fruit & Veg • UHT Milk • Long Life Juice Rice • Pasta • Coffee • Tea • Breakfast Cereals • Cooking Sauces

SUPPORTING THE HOMELESS & LOCALS LIVING IN POVERTY Mustard Tree would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported them throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The support and kindness of local Greater Manchester residents who have donated everything from tins to trainers (as well as cash) has kept us all going! We support people who may be isolated and in need of financial support including pensioners, local residents as well as people who are living in hostels and on the streets. Our priority has been to safely remain open to support our people, particularly to access food. Since the start of Lockdown to the end of June, we have supported 4,648 families. We’re currently supporting over 1,000 people a

week through our Food Clubs and emergency packages across Greater Manchester. This has risen from 500 a month. Although the health crisis may now be stabilising, the economic impact is likely to be felt long after the lockdown due to increasing unemployment, debt, and evictions. Our focus will continue to be on providing food, cost effective furniture and essential items to those in need and we will also try to help people find ways out of crisis and into opportunities to improve wellbeing. As we approach autumn and winter, our services become even more critical. If you can support us by donating money, food, furniture and/or toiletries, please visit www.mustardtree.org.uk.

MACMILLAN ALLOTMENTS by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

The Plotters have been busy working and thinking during the lockdown - not always a good combination but old age and creaky knees are good excuses for slow progress and plenty of ‘tea and talk’ breaks! We have just harvested our first pumpkin, it’s quite small but so is the grandson who will be in charge of carving it at Halloween. Our adventure into ‘climbing courgettes’ has paid off well, they grow vertically so, take up less space than the horizontal version and their yellow fruits are just as tasty. A neighbour on a nearby plot has introduced us to a cousin of the courgette; it’s called an Achoca and is a native of Chile where it grows in the high Andes, so it should do well in Salford!.

Last year, we received a donation of Begonia plants and were amazed when they survived the winter and have put on a fabulous show this summer. The plan now is to plant even more around the site, along with an array of wildflowers and primroses we have successfully grown. All across the country, applications for allotments has rocketed during the pandemic. Many applicants don’t realise that all allotments need to be worked on if they are to produce good results, but the input is worth it and the benefits are great. If anyone would like to be considered for a plot, contact the Council Allotment Officer and ask to be placed on the waiting list. Walkden, Bellway are in the process of building at Hilton Lane and included in the scheme will be 15 allotments. The waiting list for this site is now open.
