Welcome

Summer may be over but autumn has so much to offer. I love autumn for its world of colours, walking with the kids and kicking leaves, hot lattes or hot toddies to warm up and donning cosy jumpers and my comfy worn-in boots.

6

My son loves this time of year too, but for other reasons! October brings Halloween, November means Fireworks (and his birthday!) and it all leads up to that momentous occasion in December...CHRISTMAS!

Back to School

A Healthy Start

VITAMIN D: From the end of September to the

Back to school is an exciting time but a new term can also mean back-to-school illnesses: viruses, coughs, colds, anxieties and other health issues. As parents we want what is best for our children, but keeping them healthy and active can be difficult. Viruses spread easily. For a strong immune system, children need quality sleep and a balanced diet, rich in vitamins and minerals to maintain health. If your child is a fussy eater, it may be wise to source an age appropriate quality multivitamin and mineral to supplement their diet.

DIET: For a healthy immune system eat a multicoloured Mediterranean style diet packed with omegas and a variety of fresh fruit & vegetables daily with some protein, dairy and grains. Reduce damaging sugar and sweetened food & drinks.

WATER: Staying hydrated has many health benefits. 1 to 3 year olds should drink 1-1.5 litres of water a day; all school aged children 6 to 8 glasses per day.

A Healthy Mediterranean Diet

end of March, the sun in the UK isn’t strong enough to stimulate the production of vitamin D in our bodies, plus it’s very difficult to guarantee you’re getting enough from diet alone (sources include oily fish and fortified food). Taking a supplement is advised.

SLEEP: Restorative sleep is vital to stay well and focused throughout the day. Young children and adolescents need 8-12 hours per night. Routine is important too, late-nights at the weekend may be damaging to health. Lack of sleep leads to difficulties in concentrating and limited learning. Turning off electronic devices well before bedtime, taking a bath/shower and reading before bed will help establish quality sleep routines. EYE TESTS: All children should have an eye check

before starting primary school and yearly thereafter. It's often difficult to tell whether your child has sight problems, which is why regular eye tests are so important. Eye problems are often much easier to treat if detected while a child's vision is still developing, usually up to about 7 or 8 years of age.

FIGHTING COLDS: For a non-drug solution, try

Sterimar Kids Congestion Relief (£7.49, 50ml). It draws and drains excess germ-filled fluid from cells in the nasal lining, relieving congestion.

GERMS: Reducing the risk of infections! Four in five infectious diseases, such as stomach bugs, are spread by hands; children should be encouraged to always wash their hands after the loo, before eating and when coming home. `

THE DREADED HEAD LICE! Head lice will often do the rounds at schools, using a ‘Nitty Gritty’ comb, twice weekly (£7.99 in pharmacies/supermarkets) helps you spot and clear them easily.

OTHER HEALTH ISSUES: If your child has a diagnosed condition such as asthma, eczema or a food allergy, discuss this with the class teacher.

Good luck for the new term ! Wishing you all good health and don’t forget your multivitamins!

Kim’s Success Story:

Local Business Feature

From a Size 20 to a 12! I haven't let any gains get me down and drawn a line immediately so as not to sabotage my next week’s loss.” Kim Tyrell joined her local slimming world group in the October of 2016. Having admitted to previously trying and just not being in the right frame of mind she decided enough was enough.

Kim’s story...

“I transferred to Alison's group at the end of October 2016, and this was the fresh start I needed to get my head back in the game. Christmas/New Year last year was the turning point for me. I didn't have a weight gain over this period, where as in the past I could have easily gained 1/2 a stone... and then the pounds just kept creeping off, it hasn't been plain sailing but

Kim has reached her target weight and has gone from a size 20 to a size 12. She says Slimming World really isn’t a ‘diet’; there is so much variety and freedom. Kim’s favourites are a full cooked breakfast and spaghetti bolognese and credits her steady and regular losses to sticking with her group each week. “The biggest thing for me has been staying to image therapy every single week, even when the going has been tough, sharing our struggles and amazing achievements together. The support is totally invaluable. It has given me the belief that I CAN DO THIS."

Community News

FRIENDS OF PARR FOLD PARK The Friends of Parr Fold Park are an active community group whose aim is to maintain and enhance our park for the benefit of the local community and to create good community spirit. We only started the group three and a half years ago and we have achieved such a lot in that short time, but there are bigger and better things needed. We currently raise funds for our projects by holding community events and from funding pots. Regular events are organised like our ever popular Easter Egg Hunt & Halloween Drop-in, and this year we are holding our first ‘Carols in the Park’. We also plan to recognise the WW1 Centenary with a knitted poppy

display in the Garden of Remembrance. Our dedicated gardening group meet regularly to maintain and enhance the park with new planting schemes and there is so much more to do. We are always very keen to attract new members, so come and join us - everyone is welcome! Our Parks need protecting! We can make a difference! It’s so rewarding, giving something to your community! Come and join our friendly team of volunteers!

Local History

The Travelling Library

Lord Egerton’s travelling library c.1615 44 volumes, bound in vellum 3 groups: •Religion and Philosophy (Bible, Aquinas) •History (Tacitus, Suetonius, Sallust) •Poetry (Virgil, Ovid, Terence) The book case is: 16" x 11⅛ " x 3⅜" Only 4 such collections exist William Hakewill (1574 – 1655)

Readers of the last magazine will have seen the account of the Ellesmere Chaucer, an original copy of The Canterbury Tales, now an exhibit at the Huntington Library in California. One other item, amongst the 4,400 purchased by Henry E. Huntington in 1917 from the 4th Earl, was a travelling library, once in the possession of Sir Thomas Egerton, an English nobleman and judge who was appointed Lord Chancellor by Elizabeth I in 1596. He served in the traditions of Thomas Wolsey and Sir Thomas More and later acquired the titles of 1st Baron Ellesmere (1603) and 1st Viscount Brackley (1616). He had also been offered the title of Earl of Bridgewater in 1617, but he declined this honour and died just a few days later. In his judicial role, Sir Thomas would have travelled across the country and would have taken a small library of books with him. How small can be gauged from the dimensions of his own collection. The book case is 16" x 11⅛" x 3⅜". It has a wooden frame and is covered in brown morocco leather, disguising it as a large folio volume. It is one of only 4 such collections that exist today. There is a total of 44 volumes within the case, each one bound in vellum. This collection is believed to date from c.1615. A catalogue of the books faces them on the inside of the 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP

cover, painted in three columns surrounded by an arch design bearing a crest and a coat of arms. This item is commonly referred to as the 'Egerton Travelling Library'. The collection comprises 3 groups or topics: Religion and Philosophy (featuring the Bible, and works by Thomas Aquinas); History (by the Roman writers Tacitus, Suetonius, Sallust); and Poetry (again featuring works by the Roman poets Virgil, Ovid, Terence). As an undergraduate at Brasenose, Oxford, he studied the Liberal Arts. On his journeys, he was accompanied by a young secretary, John Donne, the famed poet and cleric, who no doubt enjoyed being party to the Chancellor's acquisition of books for his nascent library, later the Bridgewater Library, which grew rapidly. Donne had been appointed Chief Secretary at the age of 25. It was this entire library that Henry E. Huntington purchased from the 4th Earl. The actual size of each volume can be judged from the image above which shows one volume being held between a forefinger and thumb. The travelling compendium was probably one of four commissioned by William Hakewill over a period of four or five years. Hakewill was a lawyer, bibliophile and a M.P. and gifted each set to a friend.

TIME TO GET COSY AS THE COLDER MONTHS SET IN with THE HEIGHT CARPETS & FLOORING

It seems our amazing summer has definitely come to an end, and what better way to make us feel cosy than to get some new flooring! As co-owner of The Height Carpets & Flooring alongside my colleague Graham, I wanted to offer some tips on how to update your flooring to get ready for the autumn and winter, which will last for years to come. Think about installing quality underlay for insulation to keep your room cosy, reduce noise and give your flooring a more luxurious feel, whilst also helping it to last longer. Choose warm tones for all types of flooring but colours that will also brighten up your home on the dark nights. Different shades of grey such as this one are very popular at the moment. How much foot traffic will the room be getting? Will you need a tough durable carpet for a busy household or a soft silky thick pile carpet to create a truly luxurious feel? To bring the warmth of the Mediterranean to your home, consider statement vinyl for your bathroom, kitchen or dining space. We work with the local community building relationships as part of our service measuring up and fitting the latest designs of high-quality carpets, vinyl, laminate, LVT and rugs, to suit all budgets. Customer service is of utmost importance to us which is why we back up our work with a 12-month peace of mind guarantee – check out our Google reviews. In the meantime, to get your home ready for the winter and the next few years ahead, call Anthony (me) on 0161 465 3299 or visit our Facebook page.

Bringing Eccles Town Hall Back to Life

Eccles Town hall was constructed in 1881 for the Local Board of Health. In 1889 it was extended to provide police courts, a new council chamber and committee rooms. The large hall on the first floor had many uses; vote counting after elections, the Mayor was sworn in and the Mayoress held Charity Balls. This was the venue for the first moving pictures in Eccles in 1898, for the inauguration of Eccles Scouts in 1912 and the Saturday night ‘one shilling dances’ of the Thirties. In 1974 Eccles Borough was incorporated into the City of Salford. The banqueting hall was converted into offices but then abandoned a few years later and the space began to decay. 30 years later the Council began the first enabling phase of the hall’s restoration, installing a lift and providing wheelchair access and then proposing the establishment of a voluntary group to attract external funding for the hall’s full renovation. Thus, Eccles Community Hall Organisation (ECHO) was formed in 2010 and a 25 year lease

agreed. ECHO are a group of volunteers working to refurbish, maintain and run part of Eccles Town Hall. It was a mammoth project to secure large grants and start the renovation of the neglected premises. By 2012 the hall was fit for use although still rather basic. Since then, ECHO volunteers have worked tirelessly to bring life back into Eccles Town Hall, maintaining and upgrading this precious space in the heart of the community. The Ballroom has now been fully restored with period style ballroom lights, sound system, projector and screen, stage lights, fully licensed bar and café plus disabled access. The hall is used for Jazz concerts and brass bands, theatre and choral productions, local groups, art displays, craft fairs, meetings, lectures & conferences and on the 2nd Saturday of each month our fabulous ECHO Cafe is open 10-2pm.
