BRIDGEWATER SCHOOL

Helping to realise the potential of each individual child Ideally located in Worsley, Bridgewater School is an independent co-educational school for children aged between 3 and 18 years. Teaching staff take the time to get to know each child individually and to offer an extensive range of academic opportunities and extra-curricular experiences to enable them to realise their full potential. This year we are proud and delighted to announce that, once again, our A-level students have achieved 100% pass rate. The intimate size of our Sixth Form enables each student to explore their own individual talents and abilities and for them to excel in what they enjoy. With the added challenge of a changing curriculum and grading system, our GCSE students have again increased the proportion of top grades, as

well as recording some outstanding individual performances which bucks the national trend of falling top grades. Three of our students in particular (local Worsley girls, Anna Cumberland and Phoebe Moss, and Matthew Woodford from the Lowton area) achieved all their grades at A*/A or 9-7. All three are continuing onto our Sixth Form. As a family orientated school we are proud to celebrate the achievements of all our students who have worked so hard to achieve their personal bests, many of whom have been with us from an early age. If you would like to know more about our school, please call us on 0161 794 1463 or visit www.bridgewater-school.co.uk.

Walk Through Fire for Oldest Park Walk through a fire garden to celebrate the grand re-opening of Peel Park, Britain’s oldest public park on Friday October 13th.

The popular park, which sits beside the River Irwell off The Crescent, has now undergone a £2.5 million, 13 month restoration.

Fire sculptures with flames dancing through the trees and across the river to a backdrop of music will help the park blaze back to life. Local children who have taken part in writing, art and lantern workshops, will also show off their creations to add to the spectacle.

The original layout and the grand staircase leading down into the park have been restored and the distinctive quatrefoil flower beds replanted in Victorian style.

The magical ceremony, created by Salford City Council and Walk the Plank, aims to recreate the grandeur of a Victorian promenade lit by a million shadows representing the thousands of people who have passed through the park in its 150 year plus history. There will be refreshments to help launch the 13th Salford Food and Drink Fortnight celebrating great local food and drink heroes and the free event runs from 6pm to 8pm.

Breaking the rules Opened in 1846, Peel Park broke all the conventions of class-ridden Victorian society. It was paid for by the public through seven years of ‘crowd-funding’ and a £1000 donation from Prime Minister Robert Peel. And it allowed everyone, rich or poor through its gates when many other Victorian public spaces put restrictions on who was allowed in.

A new play area and an events space have been added and interpretation boards telling the park’s story have been installed. Years of tangled growth have been cleared away to open up the park and its views and accessible paths and parking have also been added. A park keeper has been appointed to deliver a programme of activities as part of the five year restoration programme and the fire garden celebrates the end of the majority of the physical work to refurbish the park. Ideas for the restoration came from Salford City Council, the University of Salford which sits on the edge of the park and the Friends of Peel Park, and was made possible by Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery funding. Dress warmly and come and join the magic! Pedestrian access is from The Crescent behind Salford Museum and Art Gallery and free parking for the event is available at the University of Salford car park on Irwell Place.

WORSLEY WOODS ACTION GROUP

A Celebration of Autumn Worsley Woods Action Group, in partnership with St Mark’s Primary School hope to refurbish the path through Worsley Woods that has been used for generations for children to walk from Roe Green to St Mark’s School. We want to improve the path, plant a hedge to screen the motorway and refurbish the pond in the nearby woodland. We have received support from Highways England and they have recently repaired the fence alongside the motorway. We aim to apply for a landfill grant for the work on the path and we need to raise an additional £2,000. To help towards this we are to hold a Celebration of Autumn on Saturday 28th October at Beesley Green Community Centre.

We have many activities planned already: 2k Fun Run for Under 12s. Starts at 2pm, £5 entry with a medal for each entrant. NEW YEAR BABIES FOR SALFORD Salford’s new Birth Centre will open in early 2018. It will offer women with low risk pregnancies more choice and personalised, professional midwife-led support and is unique in Greater Manchester. Ingleside, a former country house in Oakwood

Park, is being transformed into a state of the art centre with four birthing suites with pools, modern equipment and family rooms. It will also have space for community groups and activities, including exercise classes, yoga, hypno-birthing, early years provision, breastfeeding support, antenatal and postnatal clinics, stop smoking sessions and perinatal mental health services

People in Salford are proud of our city and wanted to see babies continue to be born in Salford. The new centre is part of a joint Salford City Council and NHS plan responding to that and will be run by midwives and staff from Bolton NHS Foundation Trust. It replaces the closed centre at Salford Royal hospital. Please back our appeal to fund one of the birthing pools at the centre. Look out for our yellow donation Birth Centre buckets at events around the city or give us a call on 0161 793 2416 if you want to organise your own fundraising event. Donations can be made at any bank using the following details: Salford Birth Centre Appeal, Barclays Bank, account number 53469328 and sort code 20-54-58.

Salford House Prices Soar Over the past decade, Salford has undergone a massive transformation, with hundreds of millions of pounds invested into the area. This is no surprise, with its close proximity and excellent transport links to Manchester city centre and Media city it’s not a coincidence cranes are now dominating the sky line and highlighting the fact that Salford is on the radar for investors and buyers alike. More and more people are looking to Salford to live and work, with its lower than average house prices, acclaimed schools and universities, world class leisure facilities, and careers in science, technology, and media, it’s easy to see why. But what effect is this increased demand having on house prices? Well according to figures released by the Land Registry, the average house prices in the UK increased by 7.2 pc, to £220,000. In Salford however, prices shot up from £127,918 to £144,614

18 ON OUR DOORSTEP

- an increase of £16,696. The demand shows no sign of abating and will keep driving house prices up.

The Richest Man in the World... and his 3,000 libraries Few people today would recognise the name Andrew Carnegie. They might know of the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City; they might be aware of a number of charities – and they might know that their local library, for some reason, is called the “Carnegie Library” – as it is in Eccles.

SCOTLAND – EARLY LIFE Andrew Carnegie, the man behind the name and so many institutions, was born in 1835 in Dunfermline, Scotland. His father was a handloom weaver and the family home was a simple cottage where a single room served as living, kitchen and bedroom for the entire family. In 1848 his father resolved to emigrate to the USA with his family.

THE NEW WORLD They settled in Allegheny, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where his father again worked at weaving and Andrew became a “bobbin boy”, changing spools of thread in a cotton mill for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. For this he was paid $1.20 per week (the equivalent of $36 in today’s money). Andrew was supremely ambitious and, a year later at the age of 14, he became a telegram messenger boy for the Ohio Telegraph Company. He doubled his salary to $2.50 per week, but used his job – and an extraordinary memory – to remember and become known to – most of the important business people of Pittsburgh. So dedicated was he to telegraphy that he could listen to the tapping of a message, decipher it by ear and recite the message without waiting for it to be printed! His abilities and enthusiasm were rewarded by successive promotions. He also spent much time studying at a private library owned by a Colonel Anderson who opened his collection to poor 32 ON OUR DOORSTEP

boys who wished to improve themselves. Carnegie vowed that “if ever wealth came to me” he would provide the same facility, “for which we were indebted to the noble man”.

THE ROAD TO WEALTH In 1853 Carnegie was hired to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company as a Secretary/ Telegraph Operator at a salary of $4 per week ($125 today) by Thomas A. Scott and, 4 years later, was offered the position of Superintendant of the Western Division of the Company, at just 24 years old. He was now on a salary of $1500 a year – equal to $47,000 in 2017. Carnegie was now in one of the biggest growth industries in the country and in a position to take advantage of opportunities, “perks” of his position. Scott helped him in this regard, together with John Thomson, the President of the Company. For it seemed that both were enjoying a “gravy train” of gifts from businesses which supplied goods or services to the Company. What today would be called corruption was, in those days, almost a custom. It could involve company shares, insider trading information or cash. So it was that Scott helped Carnegie to make his first investment - $500 in shares in a company which had a contract to carry messages for the PRC. It was the beginning of many years of such deals that involved the mutual interest of the three men and Carnegie steadily built the capital for his later investments. n 1864 Carnegie invested $40,000 in a property in Venango, Pennsylvania. This was to prove a bonanza, for it was a prime location for the first American oil boom. In one year his property yielded over $1 million in profits from its oil wells! He had invested in the iron and steel industry before the American Civil War, mainly because of

the need of the railway for track steel. The War and its needs for shells, armour plating for ships and more rails, now focussed him on that industry. He left the railroad company and began to form iron and steel production companies. He formed the Keystone Bridge Works and the Union Ironworks and though he was no longer with the railroad they became his biggest customer – a relationship cemented by the issue of stock in his companies to Scott and Thomson, his old associates. He even named a steel plant after Thomson. His interests and overwhelming dominance of the industry grew through expansion and acquisition. He acquired the iron ore deposits near Lake Superior, the coal mining companies, the rail lines to convey the ore to Pittsburgh and the plants to turn it into metal. He pioneered the adoption of new technology for a better product at lower prices. By 1901 Carnegie was 66 years old and wanted to retire. He had converted all his companies into joint-stock corporations and this attracted the interest of J.P.Morgan, the great banker who had a vision of combining all the industry into a mega corporation that would dominate world markets – US Steel. Morgan’s takeover of the industry was the biggest deal in history at that time, capitalised at $1,400,000,000! Carnegie’s share of the purchase price was $225,639,000 ($6.5bn today). And this was just his interests in the iron and steel industry.

THE PHILANTHROPIST Carnegie, despite having left the land of his birth when he was 13, had abiding memories of his origins. In 1881 he had taken his family, including his mother, on a trip to the United Kingdom. They toured Scotland and made their way to Dunfermline where Carnegie first demonstrated his passion for education of the poor, by funding his very first “Carnegie Library”. Eccles Carnegie Library opened 1907

This was to be the beginning of a vast programme worldwide that would see over 3,000 such educational facilities built for many deprived communities. Thus, after the sale of his iron and steel enterprises, Carnegie devoted himself to his library-building programme, directed at the English-speaking world. He bought Skibo Castle in Scotland, had a mansion in London and residences in the USA. He divided his time equally to both sides of the Atlantic. His offering to any local authority, be it in the USA, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa or colonial possession was simple: You donate the land on which you want your library, budget for books, staffing and maintenance – and the Carnegie Trust will pay to engage architects and builders to provide it. By this means not only public libraries but also university and scientific research libraries were created. In all their architectural splendour, everything from classical through gothic to Tudor, they still largely exist in more than 3,000 towns. So it is that we have a Carnegie Library in Eccles, proudly standing in the middle of town in all its neo-classical glory, since 1907. It was recently refurbished and decorated by Salford City Council and is, quite simply, beautiful.

IN MEMORIAM Andrew Carnegie died at his Shadow Brook estate in Massachusetts on August 11 1919. He had managed to spend almost his entire fortune on a huge range of worthy causes, including the libraries. A total of $350,659,653 (£76.9 billion today). The $30 million that was left was given to charities, pensioners and foundations. He was probably the most generous philanthropist of all time; believing that “shrouds do not have pockets” and you cannot “take it with you”.
