RELAUNCH OF THE NEW-LOOK ROE GREEN SALON Owner of Hair Eden, Jane Nixon, has just celebrated the recent refurbishment of her Roe Green salon, with a Relaunch Party on 3rd September, raising money for their Breast Cancer Awareness. With the help of Hair Eden’s clients, over £1,000 was raised through raffles and donations. (You can still donate online at www.justgiving.com/HairEden).

The salon has undergone a total transformation, creating more capacity to accommodate the ever-growing client base and demand for appointments. Hair Eden wanted to continue to offer the same quality experience that would be expected in a big city salon, but much closer to home. There is now a large retail space showcasing the large range of products available, and where customers will be invited to wait in a bespoke seating area where they can relax and watch the hustle and bustle of the salon.

Tel: 0161 790 3434 www.haireden.co.uk

The styling area has an additional two new stations, plus two cubed styling areas in the centre of the salon. Lighting has been built into canopies on the ceiling to create a calmer atmosphere, with soft mood spotlights and backlit mirrors. As well as being spacious, it has the feel of a sleek city centre salon. Jane set up on Roe Green eleven years ago and the salon continues to attract a large client base. As a member of the NHF, Hair Eden trains all staff within the salon, providing a unique high standard for every client who walks through the door. Jane, soon to celebrate her 30th year in hairdressing commented, “a shop refit not only motivates your staff, but keeps clients happy that you are reinvesting their money back into the business”. The refurbishment was carried out by Swinton-based shopfitters, 110% Interiors Ltd.

Keeping Business Local ...in Worsley & Roe Green Now, more than ever, is it vital to support our local businesses and keep trade local where we can. With the downturn in the economy, many small businesses are finding it difficult, suffering a decrease in trade as consumers tighten their belts. This issue, we focus on Worsley and Roe Green which are home to many vibrant small businesses, offering high quality products and services, who value their customers and give an excellent and more personal service. In Worsley, you are spoilt for choice for places to dine, with restaurants ranging from Italian (Milan) to Chinese (Tung Fong), and plenty of pubs offering food when you want a break from cooking. The majority are long-standing establishments, which is a testament to the service they offer. A newer addition is The Secret Garden Tea Room on Barton Road, which opened March 2102, serving breakfasts, lunches and afternoon tea. For hair, there is a wide range of established and highly experienced salons such as Lawlors in Worsley village, who are now celebrating 21 years. Plus in Roe Green, you’ll find a Barber and hair salons Hair Eden and Dynamics. If you are looking for beauty treatments you can choose from the intimacy of local salons to the luxury of a hotel spa. In Roe Green we have the longest serving “Salon Vert”, soon approaching 18 years, to the newest “Worsley Laser Clinic”, just celebrating their 1st year. Other services and retailers available locally 14 ON OUR DOORSTEP

include a Post Office, newsagents and general stores, Worsley Physio Clinic, Lars Zollinger Butchers plus plenty of estate agents and pubs! As well those with physical premises, there is an abundance of local businesses operating from homes and local offices e.g. Tradesmen, Gardeners, Dog Groomers, Therapists, home party businesses etc... They can easily be found in community magazines such as On Our Doorstep, local directories, on the internet or even Facebook. The Lifeblood of the Community Supporting local businesses results in a financial return for our community in many ways:n Local independent businesses and sole traders invest more into the community, supporting local charities, schools and community events. n They provide and create local jobs n They support other local businesses n Buying local can save you money, petrol and time. The UK economy is driven by small businesses, making up 99% of all UK businesses. A survey carried out in 2008 by the Federation of Small Businesses showed that small businesses are responsible for 84% of all new jobs created, 69% of apprenticeships and generate over 50% of the UK’s annual GDP. Buying local is the only way to prevent communities, and local choice, from disappearing! So before you spend, think “Can I get that product or service locally?” VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOURDOORSTEP.CO.UK

RESTORING CAR PAINTWORK TO SHOWROOM CONDITION Small bumps and scrapes - minor accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. ChipsAway Worsley provide a cost effective alternative to the traditional body shop service and this is how we do it... A typical ChipsAway repair: a bumper scuffed against a wall reversing into a parking space causing deep scratches through the paintwork and the bumper plastic.

1

The panel is prepped to ensure complete cleanliness and the damaged area is rubbed with an abrasive to remove any protruding rough spots and minor scratching. The rear wheel is covered to ensure it is protected from any dust or mess.

2

a Specialty Lacquer Blender. The repair is then dried for 45 minutes using infra red lamps. Once the area has cooled down the lacquer is then cut using a fine abrasive. This removes any texture or imperfections in the lacquer and creates a flat surface. The repair is the polished and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine. All masking is then removed.

6

7

The surrounding panels are then cleaned. Your flawless ChipsAway repair is then revealed!

The deep scratches are filled and rubbed flat. A primer is then applied to seal the damage, then rubbed down again until completely smooth. The bumper is prepped again before paint is applied and the work area masked off to prevent overspray.

3

Paint is then applied in light coats. Every coat will span slightly wider than the previous to ensure perfect paint colour blend.

4

Two coats of lacquer are applied to seal the new paint and acquire the correct shine. The edge of the lacquer coat is thinned with

The Earls of Ellesmere - Part 1

TO THE MANOR BORN... Devotees of “Downton Abbey” might wonder if anything of the like ever existed in our area.. a grand house, vast farmlands and formal gardens, stately carriages, great works of art, an aristocratic family with an army of servants at their beck and call, perhaps even royalty coming to visit? We have little evidence of such exotic butterflies today, but a little over a hundred years ago, it was all very different. A few clues as to who our Lords of the Manor were... Have you noticed how many pubs are called Bridgewater, Ellesmere or Egerton? How many districts, schools, shopping centres, streets, office blocks, concert halls… even a canal? The key to it all is in the surname Egerton, borne by an aristocratic family who owned most of what we today know as west Salford:- Worsley, Eccles, Swinton, Walkden, Wardley, Boothstown, plus Astley, Farnworth… and much more. THE EGERTONS The Egertons are an ancient family. Descended from a Sir Richard Egerton of Ridley in Cheshire, they aspired to great things. Thomas Egerton (1540-1617) Sir Richard’s illegitimate son, became a prominent lawyer who served both Elizabeth 1st & James 1st as Master of the Rolls, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal and Lord High Chancellor of England. Knighted in 1594, he became a Member of the Privy Council (advisors to the Ruler), and in 1603 was made a Peer of the Kingdom as Baron Ellesmere in the county of Shropshire. In 1598 he inherited the Tatton estate (Tatton Park) from his brother-in-law, Richard Brereton who had been married to Thomas’ legitimate sister Dorothy and through her the estates at Worsley also passed into Egerton ownership. and her husband who are said to haunt Worsley Old Hall to this day. John Egerton (1579-1649) succeeded his father Thomas. After a distinguished career as Lord Lieutenant of a number of counties, he was made Earl of Bridgewater in Somerset in 1617. The next promotion was just over 100 years later when John’s great grandson was made 1st Duke of Bridgewater in 1720. Francis Egerton (1736-1803), 3rd Duke (and 6th Earl), was the most famous of the descendants. Known as “The Canal Duke” for his vision to create the Bridgewater Canal - the first true navigable canal in the modern world. The canals also created great wealth for the Duke from his Worsley coal mines. Coal, previously an expensive fuel, was now made cheap by low cost canal transport. He was thus a major contributor to the explosive growth of the Industrial Revolution. The Duke was an astute businessman, having invested to the hilt in his Canal, it now paid off handsomely. He bought estates all over the country and built a grand residence in London, “Bridgewater House”, to house his fabulous art collection. However, he never married and his vast estate was left in Trust to his nephew and great nephew on his death in 1803. The Dukedom of Bridgewater died with him, but the Earldom of Ellesmere lived on in Worsley...

Bardsley opened its four-bed show home earlier this year, releasing the first of their phase three properties which are now in construction following the great success of the previous two phases.

With prices starting at £299,950, and a total of 71 properties ranging from elegant three, four and five- bed houses and one and two-bedroom apartments, Bardsley is seeing a reverse of the current trend in the stagnant property market – nearly 95% of properties build complete are sold.

Situated on the banks of the famous Bridgewater canal and surrounded by greenery and wildlife The Boatyard offers a unique combination of peace and

features from the latest technologies in surround sound and vision, aqua televisions and bespoke additions to the kitchen facilities. Graeme Spencer, Sales and Commercial Director at Bardsley, said: “The unique location and the high specification of The Boatyard development make it an ideal long-term investment which is why we are seeing such keen interest in these properties. “The show-home will give visitors an insight into what makes the development so special. Bardsley have finished everything to the highest standard and their experienced craftsmen have made sure that every aspect of The Boatyard development works together to bring a modern twist to a traditionally idyllic English setting.” “Visitors to our fantastic show homes will see exactly why The Boatyard was a

deserved winner of the prestigious Daily Mail Best Development in Manchester award. “The scheme’s special atmosphere relies upon its position in the tranquillity of Worsley, and the new show homes give visitors a chance to picture themselves as part of village life. The houses are the perfect choice for families and those looking for a quieter alternative to city living, with all the amenities of Manchester nearby.” Bardsley has been a household name in Manchester for almost 50 years abd has a well-earned reputation for high-quality, innovative developments. get involved with the...

Salford Rangers Team Salford City Council’s Ranger Team provides a wide range of activities, information and support to people in Salford. From exciting education programmes and community arts events to health walks, volunteering opportunities and nature trails, the friendly Ranger Team is committed to getting everyone engaged with our parks and countryside.

Volunteering with the Rangers... Salford Voluntary Rangers provides local residents with the opportunity to take part in conservation projects in Salford’s parks and countryside. Volunteering also provides the perfect chance to get out, get fit and get involved in your local environment. Projects include pond work, fence and path construction, tree planting, vegetation clearance and creating new habitats to name a few. The Ranger Team have an exciting programme of events coming up over the following months from Halloween activities to National Tree Week planting. Local parks with Volunteering schemes include:- Worsley Woods, Clifton Country Park, Dukes Drive (Monton) and Blackleach Country Park.

Protecting Wildlife in Winter... The Salford Ranger Team plays its part in helping to protect the local wildlife. You too can protect wildlife in your gardens in the lean and cold months of winter. Get your children involved and make it into a “mini-project”. This winter make sure you help Salford birds by leaving out food and water. Give birds seeds, nuts and mealworms, as this provides the nutrients birds require, or have a go at making your own bird seed cake. Remember once you have started feeding birds in your garden it is important to continue to provide food through the winter as they may start to rely on this source. For other wildlife, check bonfires before they are lit for sheltering and hibernating animals, such as hedgehogs, toads and frogs. Provide drinking water in a shallow dish or container at ground level. Melt a hole in the ice on ponds to allow wildlife to drink, enter and exit the water. For more information on volunteering, events or Salford’s parks and countryside contact the ranger team. Lose those inches & feel FABULOUS! NO PAIN, NO NEEDLES, NO DOWNTIME AVAILABLE TO MEN & WOMEN i-lipo works on thighs, buttocks, stomach, calves, knees, arms, “lovehandles”, hips, chin, man breasts and baby bulge. Equally effective on both men & women. Helen...a happy Svelte client After only 4 treatments I woke up and thought “Hey, where’s my tummy gone?” When I broke my ankle I went up from size 810 to a good size 12. Despite dieting and exercising after recovering, I still struggled to fit into my clothes. I had a bit of stubborn fat that would just not budge. I loved my clothes and couldn’t afford to buy new ones so had to get back into them. After just 6 treatments, I was well on my way. I now look be er in my Body Con dress than ever before and don’t need my Suzanne & Trinny big pants! The treatment is noninvasive, pain & hassle free! Sessions last 50 minutes. The first 20 mins are spent lying relaxed on a bed with the laserpads placed on the target area – for me, my tummy. You don’t feel

a thing. Then you spend 30 minutes on the exercise bike to burn off the contents of the fat cells that have just been released from your chosen area. The therapists are lovely and the time goes so fast when you’re having a good na er with someone who understands exactly how you feel. At the gym I struggle to spend 10 mins on one machine. Normally, when I lose weight it comes off my face and chest but never my tummy. With the iLipo you choose what area of your body you want to achieve the inch loss. If the cost puts you off trying it, then just think how much replacing your wardrobe would be. I was very sceptical of things like this before, but the proof is in the zip fastening and when that zip goes up, it is the best feeling in the world!

A VINTAGE TEA PARTY IN WORSLEY Earlier this year, we celebrated our 2nd Anniversary by teaming up with Once Upon a Teacup and ran a competition for a Vintage Tea Party for 6 people. Wendy Brittain from Worsley was the lucky winner, and this summer enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea at home! “My tea party prize was a great success and enjoyed by all! As Sybil (Once Upon a Teacup) brought in the boxes of crockery and food, I wondered where it would all fit! A lacy tablecloth transformed my modern table and was soon jam-packed with charming vintage crockery including cake stands, jam pots, cream dishes and a quaint posy of fresh flowers from Sybil's own garden. I was also offered the choice of bunting. There were three types of sandwiches, cakes, scones and fresh strawberries all jostling for attention. The tea and coffee pots made a lovely change from our usual "straight from kettle to mug" brews. There was even a miniature hamper full of fruit teas to tempt our taste buds! Best of all, when my guests had eaten their fill and relaxed in the lounge, Sybil returned to clear every last trace. All I was asked to do was scrape the plates and stack them ready for collection (not that there was much to scrape away as it had all been devoured by my appreciative family). We were so full that we had to finish the cakes the next day - what a bonus!”

Support Ryan’s Fight against Cancer Ryan at the top of Ben Nevis 2011

Ryan Bartlett from Worsley is looking for support for local organisation ‘Lease of Life’ which is raising funds for charity ‘Cyclist fighting Cancer’. With a common goal they are promoting exercise and sport to children and young adults dealing with cancer.

cancer is a painless lump or swelling in the testicles. If you have a lump or swelling, don’t panic, it’s most probably not a sign of cancer, but it should never be ignored. Go to your GP as soon as possible to get it checked out. Testicular cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer with over 95% of men with early stage cancer being completely cured.”

After beating testicular cancer aged 24, Ryan amongst friends and family are preparing for their biggest challenge yet. They will be climbing Ben Nevis w/e 27th October and will raise funds for this fantastic cause ongoing.

If you would like to sponsor Ryan and support this fantastic cause please visit: www.justgiving.com/Ryan-Bartlett0 Alternatively, text LOLC50 £10 to 70070. All donations will be much appreciated.

Following his cancer treatment, and now in remission, Ryan is keen to raise awareness about cancer within young adults and children, and will be doing so via a number of local awareness campaigns in schools, colleges and working alongside sports teams.

For further information visit www.leaseoflife.org.uk or www.facebook.com/leaseoflife2012

Ryan, a Physiotherapist, set up the charity ‘Lease of Life’ to help provide access to sport and exercise for anyone suffering or recovering from cancer. This will be achieved by buying sports equipment and providing activity days/weekends such as the Ben Nevis climb, for young adults and children living with cancer. These are vital to:• Reduce the side effects of treatment • Improve the patients mental state of mind • Reduce your risk of relapsing, and • Also improve your overall chance of living a healthier Life Ryan said: “Many young adults don’t realise that cancer can affect them, I’m living proof of that. I was only 24 when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. From my personal perspective I would urge men and women to check themselves regularly. In my case, and the most common symptom of testicular 34 ON OUR DOORSTEP
