Salford Heritage Walks 2010 Last month we featured Worsley Walks & Cruises. Now you can discover local heritage a little further afield on the new Salford Heritage Walks Programme. Choosing a Great Family Holiday Whether you are embarking on your first trip with your children, or looking for a new destination, here are some tips for booking the ideal family holiday. Planning a great holiday can take time and a lot of research, with the whole family’s needs to cater for. How do you keep the kids entertained and happy and relax and have a good time yourself? Here are some of the things you need to consider when choosing your holiday. KEEPING COSTS DOWN Costs soon mount up, especially when paying full fare for each child on the flight. Look for hotels that let children stay free in their parents' rooms and provide free meals for children, or offer buffet-style breakfasts in the price of the room. DURATION After all the planning & preparation 7 nights will fly by and you’ll be leaving just as you get settled in. 14 nights may be too long.

So consider 10 nights - most tour operators do offer this. THE FLIGHT & TRANSFER Flying can be stressful so assess the maximum flight duration your children can manage and find a destination within that range. If embarking on a longer journey, travel at night when they can sleep through. Pre-book your seats together to avoid being split up on the plane. It also means less rushing to get to the airport and a more relaxed start to your holiday. Transfer times - avoid a long journey from the airport to your resort after a tiring flight! LOCATION! Choose hotels that are close to places you want to explore, convenient for meals and amenities. Ideally, you want everything within walking distance. Also check the resort is suitable for pushchairs if you have young babies or toddlers. KEEP KIDS ENTERTAINED AND ALLOW SOME TIME TO YOURSELF. Select a hotel with baby sitting services, creche, kids clubs, kids pools and play areas for the children. Make sure they have suitable activities for kids of your age, plus some you can do together. Keeping the children happy is key to having a great holiday and it means you may get a chance to relax too. SELF CATERING VS HOTEL Self catering: flexibility to eat what you want and when you want, but is more work. However, you will get more space with separate bedrooms, lounge and kitchen. Hotel: no need for cooking, but choose buffet style if you have fussy eaters. If you want the best of both worlds, you can find apartment-style accommodation with cooking facilities and on-site restaurants.

We asked Colette Benson from Designer Travel to recommend some ideal family destinations:With 20 years of experience in the travel industry, I know how important it is for a family to find the right destination, resort, and accommodation that is suitable for them. Depending on how old your children are there is something suitable for everyone. Many family resorts now have:l

l

l

Babyzone, a quiet area where you can feed and play with your baby with high quality baby equipment. Creche, for up to 3 year olds, with fully qualified childcare experts, normally ranging from around ÂŁ5 per hour. Kidzone, for ages 4 to 12 years, usually splitting children into 3 different age groups with different activities 5 days a week, daytime and evenings.

Other facilities also available include:Swimming lessons l Football academy l Stage academy l Game zone l Reading zone l Kids entertainer and many many more.... l

Below are some great European resorts & hotel ideas with all these fantastic facilities, plus more. These hotels all have different board options to choose from. If you want to check price & availability, contact Colette at Designer Travel:Tel: 0161 727 8962 Email: colette@designertravel.co.uk

Majorca, Sa Coma, Aparthotel Coma Gran 4*

Zante, Alykanas, Alykanas Village 4*

A modern hotel offering spacious facilities, located 100 meters from the Sa Coma beach, next to the avenue and shopping centre. Apartments are comfortable and fully equipped. A wide range of facilities are available at the hotel, keeping everyone amused. There is also a supermarket on-site for any necessities.

Great scenery and soft sands, plus fantastic pools and entertainment. The Alykanas has cracked the code for laid-back family breaks. This is an excellent apartment hotel in a perfect location with the beach just a few steps past the pools. As well as the kids clubs there are adventure playgrounds and soft play areas.

Tenerife, Los Cristianos, Villa Mandi 4*

Gran Canaria, Bahia Feliz, Hotel Orquidea 4*

A resort with a village feel, made up of low-rise terracotta blocks interspersed with palms, lawns and rockeries. Situated in a quiet part of Los Cristianos, overlooking a golf course. It’s peaceful, but still within walking distance of the sandy beach at Vistas, the shops, bars and restaurants. Apartments are spacious and bright.

A hive of activity in summer. This hotel is packed with fun, games and family-friendly facilities, so never a dull moment for the children. For the adults there’s a Spa & Wellness Centre. The setting of this hotel is brilliant. Tucked along the shoreline in beautiful gardens, its lawns and palms glide down to a sandy beach.

Too Easy to Become a Coach By David Screeton - Head Professional at Worsley Park, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club. David was appointed Head Professional at Worsley Park when the golf course was established in 1999. Over the years David has accumulated a wealth of golfing knowledge, having played at the highest level as well as representing his country on numerous occasions. Using his experience, he has developed into an innovative and modern golf coach; coaching players of all levels, from beginners to European Tour stars.

A long standing friend of mine is David Platt, former England Football Captain. Whilst playing golf one day we stumbled on the topic of conversation regarding the standard of coaching both in Football and Golf. With a large amount of experience in our chosen sports, we agreed that the standard of coaching is poor at Junior level in this country. We came to the conclusion that it is too easy to achieve a coaching level allowing you to teach youngsters. David worries about the standard of young footballers coming through the academies, whereas I have noticed at first hand the problems caused by poor golf tuition. The child in the holidays is sent to a golfing school which gives parents the impression that they have reached a standard far in advance of their real ability. It can be largely disappointing for both the child and parent to realise that playing on grass is completely different to playing off an artificial mat at a driving range. The instant success of a flat elevated driving range tee can be misleading.

Parents led to believe they have a golfing prodigy on their hands and the PGA Professional, in many cases have to alter their illusions. This can be very difficult for the highly-qualified professional to then rectify swing problems caused by poor tuition suffered previously. Coaches need to be coached. I am to believe that nobody fails the coaching courses at lower standards and it seems to me like a money making scheme for governing bodies.

Reflection:The European Tour has started and the promising weather throughout March seems to have kicked started the season. My club, Marriott Worsley Park, is buzzing with anticipation of the oncoming season. The course is on line to be better than ever this summer with the recent weather predictions in the media, and I trust everyone within the region will have a fantastic golfing year!! For more info on golf membership or corporate golf days, call the pro shop on 0161 975 2043 | MarriottWorsleyPark.co.uk

Win one month’s complimentary Golf Membership at Worsley Park, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club. Worsley Park has been host to numerous high profile events such as The Challenge Tour and The Manchester Open and you could be playing the course this summer with this fabulous competition. Spring into Summer

This year winter seems to have passed straight into summer with spring only marked by the late appearance of hosts of daffodils. It does mean that we've all been given an early reminder to start on our summer body preparation, so if you're ready to get started, here's an 8-week plan to feeling energised and full of confidence. Each week of the plan introduces changes to both diet and exercise and is designed to build on the previous week.

WEEK 1 l

l

Start by really noticing what you are eating. Ideally, keep a note each day, and don't cheat! No need to change anything this week, just become more aware of what you are consuming. Aim to do 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (walking, jogging, cycling, swimming) on 3 days at a pace you are comfortable with.

18 ON OUR DOORSTEP

WEEK 2 l

l

l l

l

Replace any fried foods with grilled, baked or steamed. Limit cakes, biscuits and chocolate to 2 small portions a week. Eat 3 meals a day and don't skip breakfast. Repeat the exercise from week 1 but increase the intensity so that you are breathing more heavily and sweating. Add 2 sets of resistance exercises using resistance bands, dumbbells or your own bodyweight on 2 days, ideally alternating with the cardiovascular work and including upper and lower body exercises.

WEEK 6

WEEK 3 l

l l

Add 2-3 small healthy snacks a day e.g. fruit, small handful of nuts, low fat yoghurt. This will help keep your metabolism fired up and stop you over-eating at mealtimes. Reduce alcohol intake to 1-2 units per day. Replace your normal dinner plate with one no more than 9 diameter & split it:-

3 weeks to go! l Reduce alcohol consumption to 1-2 units on just two nights a week. l Cut out all cakes, biscuits and chocolate. l Do 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise on 5 days and your resistance workouts on 4, but ensure you build in one full day's rest.

WEEK 7 l

l

25% lean protein (meat, fish, eggs, soya), 25% starchy carbs (pasta, potato, rice) and 50% vegetables. l

Add an extra session of cardiovascular exercise and an extra session of resistance exercise.

WEEK 4 l

l

Replace processed foods with natural and drink 1 litre of water each day. Increase your cardiovascular sessions to 30 minutes and add a third set of resistance exercises.

WEEK 5 l l

Switch to wholemeal bread, pasta and rice. Find ways to incorporate more exercise into your day - take the stairs, get off the bus a stop earlier, walk to the shops, park further away - then do it every day.

Ensure you include some protein with each main meal, including breakfast. For 2 of your cardiovascular workouts, do a 20 minute interval training workout: walk/run/swim/cycle at your usual pace for 5 minutes to warm up then at a fast pace for one minute, then slow to a gentle pace for one minute. Repeat this for 10 cycles and finish with a slow pace for 2 minutes to cool down.

WEEK 8 l

Reduce the amount of carbohydrate to 2 small servings a day (1 serving = 1 slice bread, 3 small new potatoes, 40g uncooked pasta/rice).

l

Do 3 interval training sessions and 3 steady-pace cardiovascular sessions, plus 3 resistance workouts.

Then pack your bags and fly off to your most energised holiday ever! Karen Pheasant, owner of Ladies Workout Express in Swinton.

BODYWEIGHT RESISTANCE EXERCISES Here are 2 simple, but effective exercises you can do at home. Aim to do 10 repetitions of each, then rest, and repeat. Bent Knee Push-Up Start with hands & knees on a mat. Your hands should be shoulder-width apart and your head, neck, hips and legs should be in a straight line. Do not let your back arch & cave in. Maintain a slight bend in the elbows. Lower your upper body by bending your elbows outward, stopping before your chest touches the floor. Contracting the chest muscles, slowly return to the starting position. Inhale while lowering your body. Exhale while returning to the starting position. After mastering this exercise, you may wish to try the full push-up.

Squat Stand straight with feet hip distance apart. Hold onto a chair for balance if you need to. Inhale as you bend at the knees and hips until your thighs are parallel to the floor, keeping your feet flat on the floor. Try to keep your knees directly above your toes. Contract your quadriceps (thigh muscle) and glutes (buttocks) and exhale while returning to the starting position. Make sure your head is up, your back is straight and your chest lifted throughout the movement. Discontinue this exercise if you feel any discomfort in your knees or lower back. ON OUR DOORSTEP 19

Celebrating local success Have you seen Tracey zipping around in her new Herbalife Mini? - a great reward for achieving Top UK Salesperson in 2010 (Qtr1). Tracey Peake, a Worsley business mum, runs Peake Health, a health & wellness centre on Chorley Road, Swinton. Over the last 4 years her business has gone from strength to strength. Tracey started her busines from home and is now moving to larger premises and expanding her services to the community from a double fronted shop on Moorside Road. We invited Tracey to share her story. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BACKGROUND I’m a mumpreneur and sole carer of my son Jake, who is 13 years old. I trained as a pharmacist and have 26 years experience in retail pharmacy. I owned my own Pharmacy in Lowton for 12 years. WHAT IS PEAKE HEALTH - HOW DID IT START? I help people lose weight, gain energy and change their lifestyle. Plus I help people start businesses like mine, working from home as a Herbalife Distributor (Herbalife is global nutrition, weight-loss and skin-care company). Running my own pharmacy was extremely demanding and due to the workload, I decided to sell it to devote more time to my son who was then 5 yrs old. After that, I worked as a locum, which was easier but was neither inspiring nor creative enough. Having been a pharmacist since 1984, I needed a new directon. In 2006, I set up from home as a Herbalife distributor, but working from home became unsustainable so then moved to premises on Chorley Road and set up the weight loss and nutrition centre, Peake Health. HOW DOES RUNNING THE BUSINESS FIT WITH YOUR FAMILY LIFE? The beauty of this business is that I can keep work at work and make sure I achieve quality

time with my son. Plus I have the opportunity to win luxury prizes, like a Mediterranean cruise in 2011, and take Jake with me. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? We are in the business of delivering results be they weight loss, improving wellness and energy, sports performance and even peoples incomes. One of the greatest pleasures is watching peoples self esteem and confidence grow as a result of losing weight or developing their own Herbalife business with my support. TELL US ABOUT YOUR RECENT SUCCESSES I have just won the Herbalife Top Sales Award Qtr1 2010. I was presented with the Herbalife branded Mini Cooper at the National HERBALIFE meeting at the Lowry Theatre on 24th April for achieving the highest personal sales in UK & Ireland. This follows reaching the top 5% of distributors in the UK & Ireland last October. Peake Health is moving to new premises due to the huge demand for health and wellness products and my expanding team. We will have the scope to incorporate related services to help the clients achieve their goals, with a large meeting room to hold group meetings and training for new distributors. It is exciting times as the health & wellness industry is growing rapidly and beating the recession, as people are looking to stay younger, fitter and healthier. CAN YOU GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR OTHER BUSINESS START-UPS Develop a positive attitude and a “no job too small” approach, keeping focused with your goals in writing whilst looking after yourself with great nutrition products like Herbalife to give you the energy and good health needed to support your business, yourself and your family.

Ancient Worsley History

Murder Most Foul “Worsley

Man” - an Iron Age sacrifice to the Gods The Manchester Museum, The University of Manchester

They came for him at dusk, in the bitterly cold winter of 120 AD and took him to the sacred grove of great trees on the red sandstone ridge where all their religious rituals took place. He was one of their own, the Celtic Brigantes, who occupied what we know today as Lancashire and Yorkshire, under the iron grip of Roman rule. However, ancient customs die slowly and Roman law was far from the forests and desolate fenlands of the area now known as Worsley. Tribal justice judged him for his shameful crimes and in the place of the gods, passed the verdict of death. This was no noble death such as hanging from a tree, or mercifully by the sword, but the “Triple Killing” reserved for those felons sacrificed to the greatest goddess of the Celts, Mother Earth. The number three has always had magical significance for Celtic people and was especially potent when applied to sacrifice, since it appeased the triple manifestations of the earth goddess as the bringer of fertility, plentiful harvests and renewal. She was the guardian of the “Otherworld”, where they all would go to on their deaths. Ritual dictated that he be fed a final meal of porridge, made from the seeds of a wide variety of plants, to ensure he took the promise of renewed growth with him to the afterlife. Then he was killed... Firstly, he was garrotted with the sinews taken from a deer. Then his skull was pierced by an axe and, before hitting the ground, his throat was cut and he was decapitated. 22 ON OUR DOORSTEP

The climax of the ceremony was the bearing of his remains, in procession, to the edge of the great marsh now called Chat Moss, where he was hurled into its hellish pools and tannic bogs. Such places were believed to be the gateway to the “Otherworld”. There he would lie for almost 2,000 years until 1958 when his skull was discovered by a group of peat-cutters, working at Worsley Moss in Astley. Preserved by the tannic acid of the peat, still with some hair and flesh intact, he seemed a recent death, possibly a murder. The workmen called the local constabulary to the scene, but the excitement did not last. Forensic investigation established that the skull was very old. A coroner delivered an “open verdict” at an inquest and the skull was lodged at Manchester Medical School, in a cupboard, quietly forgotten. It seems nobody thought to connect the finding with a wave of similar discoveries in Europe, particularly Denmark, where a remarkably well-preserved body “Tollund Man” had been found in identical circumstances. Over 100 “Bog Bodies” have now been found, all preserved by a combination of bog chemistry and cold temperature at the time of death. Then in 1984, a complete body was found in Cheshire. “Lindow Man” came to the surface of Lindow Moss and became a celebrity. He was very well preserved. Wearing only a fox fur bracelet he was complete with his hair, skin and features. He proved to be of the same antiquity as Worsley Man and had been executed in precisely the same way.

His discovery re-awakened interest in Worsley Man. In 2003, he was transferred to Manchester Museum into the care of archaeologist Professor John Prag, who in turn introduced him to facial anthropologist Caroline Wilkinson. She had long specialised in facial reconstruction based on the individual characteristics of skulls, techniques extensively used in aiding identification of human remains from crime or disaster events. Firstly, a CT scan was commissioned at Christies Hospital to establish the precise form and deformities of the skull, both through its internment period and later forensic work. It was then sent to University College of London to be digitally corrected to its pre-death form. From that point, Wilkinson was able to remodel the skull and introduce muscles and facial features. Small details of the skull can indicate the presence, in life, of features such as earlobes - which indeed he had!

DON’T

After skin was added, the final touch was to apply the dark hair and blue eyes of the typical Celt and Worsley Man lived again, albeit without a body…

The Manchester Museum, The University of Manchester

Does he look familiar? Did he leave descendants? Perhaps the chap you passed the other day in Boothstown… Written by John Kirwin
