Adoption Feature

“Get started on your adoption journey” Gail Spray, Head of Service of Adoption Counts, appeals to potential adopters in our Region. Since coming together as a Regional Adoption Agency in 2017, at Adoption Counts, we have been working very hard to make sure we do our best for those children in care who are waiting to join a forever family.

birth parent and provide a permanent home and support for the child you adopt. You will be able to explain how they came to live with you and support their identity needs as they grow up with you.

There are children all over the country who need a lifelong family. They may be young or already at school, as part of a sibling group, from a range of ethnic, cultural and faith backgrounds, they may live with a disability or health needs. Our most important job is to do our best by them, and find them the right forever family in which to thrive and grow in. This is why we want hear from anyone who feels they could offer a child a nurturing and loving home.

If you're wondering where to start, we have a free guide on our website www.adoptioncounts.org.uk that could help: it will break down the process and timescales, share the stories of other adoptive parents and help you decide if adoption is right for you at the moment.

You may decide to adopt for many different reasons. You may have experienced infertility, or you may be considering adoption because of your deep commitment to children or the planet, or you may be an experienced parent looking to grow your family through adoption. Whatever the reason, we’re here to help. Adopters come from all walks of life – and we encourage enquiries from a diverse section of the community, irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, disability, race or faith. There is no age limit to adopt, although you will need to be at least 21 years old to get the process started. As an adoptive parent, you will become the legal parent of a child who cannot – for whatever reason – live with their birth parents. You’ll take on the same legal rights and responsibilities of a

We are currently looking for adopters for children of all ages. We are particularly reaching out for people who will consider children aged three years and above, sibling groups, children of a minority ethnic background (particularly from Black African and Black Caribbean communities) and children with complex needs. Adoption is a big decision. But it could be the best you ever make. Talk to us. Adoption Counts works for children and families living in and around the Local Authorities of Cheshire East, Manchester, Salford, Stockport, and Trafford.

RSPCA Manchester & Salford

ALL ABOUT RABBITS At the RSPCA Manchester & Salford Branch we have been specialising in rabbit rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming since 2008. During that time we have seen so much progress in rabbit care standards. These days people understand rabbits need a diet that is made up of primarily hay/grass, that they shouldn't be fed muesli mix or carrots and that rabbits benefit from the company of their own kind. What many people don’t realise is the best combo for harmonious relations is a neutered male and neutered female. However, ‘bunny bonding’ is rarely plain sailing and it takes several weeks of gradual introductions to stand the best chance of a happy mix.

straight after giving birth and you can be on your second litter within a matter of 4 weeks. The cost of neutering rabbits is a lot higher than many owners think, typically ranging from £100 to £250 depending on gender. Adopting from a rescue centre for £50 is the most cost effective way of acquiring a pet rabbit and the adoption fee will usually include the cost of vaccination and microchipping too, which could ultimately save you up to £300 per rabbit. So the next time you are thinking of getting a rabbit, think rescue!

Sadly, these days we see more and more unneutered rabbits living together, often unhappily and often reproducing at a rate of knotts. Not many people know that a rabbit can conceive

Local History

WORSLEY MAY QUEEN B

eginning in 1875, the Earl of Mulgrave, rector of St. Mark’s, Worsley, instituted the festival of crowning the May Queen. For the next eight years, this became an increasingly popular local event, eventually attracting up to 10,000 people. The weather over those few years was mixed! Due to his increasing ill-health, the last fête was held in 1882. The May Queens over the years, (decided by ballot of the boys’ school!) were: 1875 Gertrude Derbyshire; 1876 Ada Berry; 1877 Miss M. A. Bagley; 1878 Lilian Stephenson; 1879 Katie Redford; 1880 Cecilia Hilton; 1881 Annie Morton; 1882 Lillian Irlam.

In 1884, the festival was revived. Leigh Chronicle, Friday 8 August 1884:

ROSE QUEEN CORONATION AT WORSLEY For a few days the village of Worsley has presented an animated appearance, and has been the scene of several fêtes. A sale of work was opened on Thursday afternoon, by Lady Algernon Egerton, and sports were held in the afternoon, and the other days of the week. The object of the festivities was to raise a sum of £600 to clear off the balance of the cost of a new organ chapel in St. Mark’s Church, Worsley. On Saturday afternoon the Rose Queen coronation and children's fête were the attractions. This is the second year that a coronation of this kind has taken place at Worsley, and it bids fair to become an annual event. The whole of the arrangements were under the superintendence of the Very Rev. the Earl of Mulgrave. Although the sky bore a very threatening aspect in the morning, towards noon the sun shone brightly. There were between 3,000 and 4,000 spectators present, and amongst these may be mentioned the Hon. and Lady Algernon Egerton, the Misses Egerton, and the Hon. Francis and Thomas Egerton, Lord Hervey Phipps, Viscount Brackley, Capt. Heaton, Mr. J. Laycock; the Rev. H.R. 10 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Hopwood and the Rev. W.G. Harland, curates of Worsley; the Rev. W.H. Baynes, vicar of Warton; the Rev, R. Hosgood, curate of St. Luke’s, Cheetham Hill; the Rev. J. H. Watmough, curate of Ellenbrook; and the Rev. R. Harland, curate of Walkden. The queen was Miss Hester Pollitt, of the Crescent, Worsley, and nearly 300 children, who represented various characters, took part in the procession. The Worsley Brass Band headed the procession, which marched round the lawn, and shortly afterwards the ceremony crowning the queen was performed by Lady Algernon Egerton, the band playing the “National Anthem.” Dressing the May-pole was the next item, and after this the procession reformed and marched out of the field. In the evening dramatic performances were given in the schoolroom attached to the church, after which there was a brilliant display of fireworks, the grounds being beautifully illuminated by some hundreds of coloured lights; two rows of Japanese lanterns were placed in front of the throne, and the whole of the wood close by was illuminated with coloured fire. Written by Paul Speakman, Worsley Image: Taken in 1914 during the Worsley Pageant, this gives an idea of what the original May / Rose Queen celebrations may have looked like.

City Mayor Paul Dennett

GREENWAY TO BE UNVEILED AFTER REVAMP Monton and Swinton residents are invited to the launch of the fully revamped Swinton Greenway. The cycling and walking route, that runs from the A6 Manchester Road to Monton Road, has experienced a £6m transformation and will fully open to the public at an event on Saturday 11th June, 11am to 3pm. The event will take place at the fields near Swinton Football Club, just off Overdale in Swinton, with many exciting family activities including smoothie and boogie bikes, children’s craft making, street performers or you can even try riding an electric bike. Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett will cut the ribbon to open the route which is expected to be very popular

with cyclists and walkers. It will have 30 entrances available for residents to access it and it has been widened to 3.5m in places to make it more open. Paul Dennett said: “Our revamped Swinton Greenway will be used and loved by cyclists and walkers alike. It is now easier to walk on and cycle, more open to Swinton and Monton residents and is able to be used day and night, 365 days a year with the sensor lighting”. “I can’t wait to fully unveil this new route and get on my bike to make as much use of this traffic-free route as I can.” So make sure you add this date to your diary and we look forward to seeing you there.

Get Fit This Summer! 5 easy strategies for getting back into the fitness habit

Summer is here and if you’ve not yet established your fitness routine, now is the BEST time to start! The days are much longer and warmer and you can exercise before or after work in the light. Getting up earlier to exercise can set you up mentally and physically for the day, plus you feel great that it’s done! Many of you will be looking forward to well-earned holidays abroad and it may have been a few years since you had to put on swimwear! The good news is that there is still time to kick start your fitness regime. If the thought of a treadmill or cross-trainer makes you shudder, don’t panic. If you look at fitness as being a lifestyle choice, rather than an extra hobby or 30-day challenge, your mindset changes and you start to develop behaviours that will improve many areas of your life.

Here are 5 easy strategies to get you into the fitness habit.

1. Don’t change too quickly And don’t try to do too much too soon. Better to make small, incremental changes to your routine and gradually build up by choosing a couple of new healthy habits and practising them daily, such as drinking more water or getting up from your desk every hour and moving around.

2. Find something you love doing Consistency is key if you want to get fit. This means you need to find activities you love doing so you return to them again and again. If you love social activities, think about trying a team sport, doing a group fitness class like Zumba or joining a walking or running group. If you’re working out for mental health benefits, try activities that will help you relax, such as Yoga or Pilates. 16 ON OUR DOORSTEP

3. Move every day You have more than 600 muscles in your body that need to be worked on a regular basis to stay functional. By moving, you are strengthening your muscles, which improves stability, balance, and coordination. That doesn’t mean a 5k run every day or bench-pressing your own bodyweight. Simple movements like a short walk around the block or 15 minutes of stretching exercises will do the trick.

4. Get outside more With summer now here, there’s no reason to stay indoors. It’s always more pleasant to exercise in the fresh air plus being out in nature has brilliant health, fitness and mind-boosting benefits.

5. Focus on the psychological benefits too Concentrate on how you feel rather than how you look. This might mean being less out of breath when you climb stairs, sleeping better, or being more alert. Your age or current level of fitness doesn’t matter, because you’ll find that small changes can deliver BIG results. Getting fit for summer need not involve gutbusting, no-pain-no-gain routines. Follow these simple steps and although you might not see the melt fat off in one week, they will help ease you into a healthier lifestyle, and of course, it will help you get fitter and slimmer, too. Why Selling via Open House Makes a Huge Difference An Open House is not just a viewing, it’s an EXPERIENCE. From the moment a viewer steps over the threshold they are captivated and swept away in their very own unique vision where all their senses are heightened. Uncluttered, with plenty of natural light and immaculately presented, it gives the viewer a blank canvas, where they can imagine themselves living in a space, they can finally call home. The smell of freshly brewed coffee, fresh linen and flowers play on every emotion as they walk from room to room to carefully selected music, immersed in the thought of it becoming their dream house. There can be no compromise in the attention to detail. How we market the property is the beating heart of the process; we have only one chance to make a first impression and we have to get it right first time. It’s not the houses that we are selling but a lifestyle, so that all needs to be captured in a way that the viewer feels it within that first few seconds from browsing the internet to the initial viewing. That first look and first impression needs to be of the highest standards, regardless of the value of the property.

who needs a home deserves nothing short of wonderful. There are many factors that contribute to a successful Open House. This includes time spent researching the area, gathering detailed knowledge of the property prior to listing it, as well as vetting the buyers to ensure that everyone who views the property is in a position to buy. Once the right buyers are chosen to view the property, the agent acting on behalf of the owner, at that point, becomes the seller. They must know every detail as well as the owner (and more) when it comes to presenting the house and ensuring all questions from prospective buyers are answered confidently. Selling via Open House is a win-win situation where the sellers walk away with the best outcome and the buyers believe that they are purchasing their dream home and lifestyle. IMPROVING & PROLONGING QUALITY OF LIFE DANCING WITH DEMENTIA is a local charity for people living with dementia, their family, friends and carers. We provide a place where people living with dementia can share social activities by creating a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere. Professional artists perform music and songs which both rekindle memories and stimulate conversations for our guests. Meeting up with family and friends in a social setting creates a feeling of wellbeing, reconnection with the community and a sense of being valued. We found that isolation, loneliness, and depression can be contributory factors to the condition so we decided to open our doors to anyone who felt low in spirit and to increase wellbeing in the community.

We are entertained by professional musicians in a beautiful ballroom. There is a licenced bar where soft drinks, or something stronger, may be purchased. Guests are encouraged to sing along to the popular music of their era and to even venture onto the dance floor and enjoy the dancing or just chatting to friends and making new friends. We meet at the Grand Palais, Station Road, Swinton on the second Monday of each month, 1.00-3.00pm. It’s free event, and includes a hot drink and light refreshments. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Email: lesley.fisher01@yahoo.co.uk Call: 07442 167208

DECONTAMINATING LAND FOR LOCAL ALLOTMENTS by Lynn Pilling (Salford allotments decontamination project) In Salford the Allotment Federation and the Salford City Council are very actively working towards finding more allotments, restoring or replacing sites that have fallen into dereliction and identifying new allotment sites. Developers are willing to build on brown field sites which are often in close proximity to existing amenities. Developers and City Councils have made agreements to ensure that land is made available for leisure facilities and allotments alongside homes. Before being redeveloped as housing or transforming into parks and gardens, brown field land needs to be decontaminated and debris cleared. New technologies and industries have been evolving to take on this task. Phytoremediation and phytomining are areas of research that seek to redress contamination as an alternative way to digging out, burning and dumping the contaminated soil, laying down membranes and adding clean soil from elsewhere. Several species of plants have adapted to grow on highly contaminated sites known as metallophytes. Some are ancient, growing where the soil is rich in certain minerals near to the surface. These are known as indicator metallophytes showing where sources of metals lie in the ground. Obligate metallophytes can only survive in the presence of these metals; facultative metallophytes can tolerate high levels of heavy metals but can also grow without them. These specialised plants can be found on old mine spoil heaps and waste ground following demolition of factory sites. Familiar plants are Leadwort, alpine pennycress, plantain, sandwort, common bent. Plants we grow in our gardens such as golden rod, hydrangea, willow, Indian mustard feature among the plants known to accumulate pollutants. The next question is what to do with the metals in the plants. University research departments all over the world have been researching the potential uses of these plants to remediate the pollution we have caused to soil and water. The studies also look at how the 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP

metals could be ‘mined’, recycled from the plants. .

To explore this further Brunel University have developed a Citizen Scientist’ project sending out 200 packs of seeds with a method and instructions to grow a selection of plants known to accumulate heavy metals. The soil is sampled before sowing the seeds, the plants are harvested and the soils sampled again. At all stages the soil and plants are analysed in the laboratory. Geoff Hamilton and Don Booth from the Salford Allotment Federation, staff from Salford City Council and artists Lynn Pilling and Val Murray from the art group Tea are growing one of these packs on a piece of contaminated land at the Beechfield site. The land is needed for allotments urgently and this process may take too long for the local gardeners but it will play an important role in furthering our knowledge of ecological methods of decontamination and recycling heavy metals. Lynn and Val will be closely observing and documenting the process of the experiment through drawing and photography. They are looking for interesting, accessible places to exhibit the work.

STUDY FINDS ALLOTMENTS CAN SAVE COUNCILS MORE THAN £385K

A study commissioned by Brighton and Hove Allotment Federation found that Council provision of allotments benefits both the plotholders and the wider community in many more ways than just through producing local food. When you consider the wider benefit, allotments save the city at least £385,000 per year, and that's before the plotholders even pay rent. Food grown on allotments reduces food related carbon footprint by 1050 tonnes at a value of £257k pa; healthcare costs reduce with improved mental and physical health; there’s less processing of packaging and food waste; plus further value is created by the biodiversity and soil carbon storage at the allotments. Concluding that allotments are good for you, your community, the environment and council finances!

Local Business

How to find the right Kitchen company for your project Your new dream kitchen is one of the largest investments you will make in your home, and one which will only happen once every 15 years or so. So it’s critical to choose the right company to do it and make it as stress-free a process as possible. North Manchester Kitchens and Bedrooms share their advice on how to make the right choice. With so much competition in the kitchen renovation market, you wouldn’t be surprised to see companies battling for your custom by improving ranges, upping services & driving down costs. This is usually the way companies compete and stay ahead of the competitors within their markets, and the benefits are greatly welcomed by the buying public. You may then find it strange to see the exact opposite taking place across the kitchen and bedroom industry. Prices are skyrocketing; all the big players have focused on selling and moved away from fitting kitchens. You may have recently been for a quote with one of the industry’s largest kitchen suppliers and found they have a fabulous 50% off sale, yet the fitting is more expensive than the kitchen? Seems like madness until you realise, they never wanted to fit your kitchen and didn’t have the staff or resources to do so, even if you had paid the extortionate fees. Selling a kitchen is easy. Fitting the kitchen and dealing with the issues of removing old units, hiking materials up and down stairs, dealing with ancient plumbing and dangerous electrics, are where all the pitfalls start to creep in, but this is one of the reasons kitchens and their fitting is an expensive

business that people usually only invest in once every 15 years or so. Is there a smart business model at play here? Taking a percentage of the overall cost but then walk away and wash your hands when the job gets tough? At North Manchester Kitchens we have a saying. Never trust a company’s products if they aren’t willing to fit them. When a job is as complicated as fitting a kitchen and has so many potential pitfalls, you need one company to design, sell, build and fit. One company managing the other trades - one you can trust and rely on to complete the job. At North Manchester Kitchens we stay ahead of our competition by providing a service they can’t offer; by being that person you can rely on. We have a “one fit and one customer at a time” policy, and we give you 100% of our attention until the job is done.

If it’s worth paying for, it’s worth paying to have it done properly.
