WORLSEY DELPH: THE RESTORATION

The regeneration of Salford’s much-loved stretch of the Bridgewater Canal has reached an exciting stage. Investment to date has delivered towpath improvements, new seating and signage, welcoming green spaces and the installation of popular features such as the Monton horse, Barton navvy and the Worsley ducks. The focus has now shifted to the jewel in the canal’s crown, Worsley Delph! A hugely important place in terms of Salford’s heritage, the Delph was the starting point for the Bridgewater Canal, and a catalyst for the Industrial Revolution. Work is underway to make the site more accessible for visitors, with the addition of new features and information points to tell the story of this unique place.

Sluice Gate

A new extended viewing platform will allow people to get closer to the basin area. While new artworks, including a landmark piece inspired by an 1870s drawing of “a crane of a very curious construction”, will help reveal Worsley’s revolutionary place in world history. The crane and a cluster of mining boats are already in place and there’s plenty more to come. In the adjacent Nailmaker’s Basin, seating and interpretive paving have been installed, and Alphabet Bridge is also being restored. The Bridgewater Canal's smallest bridge is so named because of its 26 planks, which local children used to practise their alphabet on the way to school. Find out more about Worsley Delph at www.est1761.org/delph-2019

You can help by donating any of the following school necessities to the SmartStart project:

St. Mark's Church, Worsley

175 YEARS ON... S

aturday 15 June 1844 was a momentous day in the history of Worsley, for two reasons. Firstly, it was to mark the coming-of-age of the Hon. George Egerton, the eldest son of Lord and Lady Francis Egerton. Secondly, it was the date chosen for the laying of the foundation stone of the proposed parish church of St. Mark. This event was to be shared, not just by members of the family, but also by thousands of people of all classes, in Lancashire and other counties. The celebration was witnessed and attended by those in the employ of Lord Egerton and the Bridgewater Trust, together with the populations of Worsley, Runcorn, the surrounding towns and several thousands from Manchester and its neighbouring districts.

To mark this significant event, the parish will be holding its own celebrations on the weekend of 15/16 June. Come to one of the special services on Sunday 16th June: 8:00am Holy Communion 9:30am Tiny Church Plus for Foundation Sunday 10:30am Parish Communion, preacher and Celebrant the Bishop of Middleton 6:30pm Choral Evensong: Stanford in Bb. Preacher Revd. Richard Peers, Director of Education for Liverpool Diocese. The church would also welcome any memories, stories, photographs that local residents may wish to share. Later in the year, Saturday 19th October, the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band will be presenting a celebratory concert in the church. Tickets for this prestigious event will be on sale from mid-July.

Rhubarb

PLOTTING AROUND THE CITY by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

The Plotters have been busy - the onions and shallots are growing well and there will be a good rhubarb and strawberry crop. Our tomatoes, chillies and peppers are thriving too along with our first try at kohl rabbi and a few new varieties of squash, pumpkin and sprouts. We hope your plots are doing just as well too!

Across the City... Beechfields, Swinton looks promising with c.70 half-sized plots being considered. A mix of plot sizes may be on offer - the Council and the SAF will be discussing details over the next few months.

Hilton Lane, Walkden - the Council officers asked for several improvements to the Bellway proposals and these have all been accepted by the developer.

Strawberries

Poorlots, Irlam - long standing legal issues await to be resolved at a Public Hearing planned for Autumn 2019. A resolution may be available in 2020! Mountain Street, Walkden allotments are getting closer to completing a long-term self-management agreement with the Council and this will give their committee more control over the future of the site. Tindall Street, Eccles are now ‘self-managed’; the group is looking at many facility improvements and will instal another composting toilet this summer. ‘Growing your own’ and working with others in the open air, has so many environmental and personal benefits. If you’re interested in an allotment in Salford, contact the Council or the Secretary of the Salford Allotment Federation at carolyn.collins@me.com

TIME OUT FOR CARERS Plumbing Joinery Electrics Guttering

T

here are approximately 27,000 unpaid carers in Salford who, because of their dedicated care, save the NHS billions of pounds preventing their 'cared for' going into hospital or residential care. Time out for Carers is unique and different to other carer support groups in that the medical condition of the 'cared for' varies e.g. Dementia, Parkinson's, Heart Disease, Stroke, Mental Health or general elderly and infirm. Open to all unpaid carers in Salford, we meet every Wednesday 12-3pm. You can come for the full three hours or drop in for however much time you can spare. We offer support, respite, information on benefits, friendship and the chance to talk to others in the same situation. Refreshments are provided and we also have a complimentary Qualified Therapist present to give each carer a free massage of their choice (head, back, shoulders, hands, feet and Reiki). We often have speakers from Health and Welfare and sometimes even entertainment! Trips are organised to museums, castles, stately homes, theatres, restaurants and twice a year we all lunch at Walkden Glass House and enjoy beauty treatments just before. Most of these activities are funded, so carers often pay nothing.

RAISE £10,000 TO SAVE OUR ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

W

orsley Woods Action Group are trying to raise funds to replace the equipment in the Play Area in Worsley Woods, which has come to the end of its life. After widespread consultation we have decided to renew the area with a similar trim trail. Worsley Woods is located in the picturesque village of Worsley. It's a local nature reserve, home to self-guided trails and hosted events including talks, orienteering, den building and outdoor education activities. Last year, our adventure playground failed it's annual safety inspection. After 10 years, it had simply reached the end of it's lifespan, and it was a good

innings given its location - wet ground and tree cover. It's now time to rebuild and we're raising funds towards the costs, expected to be in the region of £30,000. We're hoping to raise £10,000 towards these costs, which will be supported by grants and contributions from other organisations. All donations will be used for the new play area. If we are unable to go ahead, or raise more money than required, the funds will be put towards other enhancement projects within Worsley Woods. Please give your support to this great local resource!
