WOW how time flies. We have now been trading for a whole year!

A&C Hardware, a family run business, opened in Boothstown in April 2012. We hoped to bring new life to the Standfield Centre and encourage other new businesses to follow. Gradually we have seen more local businesses joining, and with the recent addition of Sainsbury Local, the centre is now becoming a focal point for the local community and a more vibrant place.

Doing what we love!

When we opened Petpals in 2004, we had no idea how popular the service would be!

We tend to find that dogs love a lunchtime walk in any weather, particularly when owners lead busy lives, or are simply unable to provide the amount of exercise they would like for their pets.

We are also busy visiting cats whilst owners are on holiday. Cats are territorial creatures, and love to stay in their own environment. In fact, it is said that cats have a stronger bond with their territory than they do with their owners!

Each year brings new clients, and lots of puppies and this year has been no exception. It’s interesting to see the trends in the dogs that people are welcoming into their homes and anything crossed with a Poodle is certainly proving popular at the moment.

Labradoodles, Sproodles, Cavapoos and Cockerpoos to name but a few. Here’s one of the latest to join our morning walk – she’s definitely a cutie!

Petpals have embraced social networking in 2013 and customers can check their pets’ daily antics on our Facebook page. Reuben, our Springer Spaniel hosts the page and he certainly has some fun with his Petpals Pals every day.

Join us by adding “Reuben’s Pals”.

When we tell people what we do, they often imagine us walking through fields, surrounded by dogs that are bounding through the long grass under blue skies. The staff at Petpals all agree that working with animals is hard work but very rewarding…..but if we could just do something about that weather!

Horticulture & Folly Brook Garden Shop at Eccles Sixth Form Centre One of the most recent projects the students have been involved with is the creation of an Incredible Edible Salford hub at the centre.

Folly Brook Garden Shop is based at Salford City College’s Eccles Sixth Form Centre. The shop is maintained by Horticulture students studying at the centre, and produces a range of products including flowers, plants, vegetables, fruit, herbs, planters and hanging baskets.

Throughout the college year, Folly Brook is open to the general public Monday to Friday, 10am-2pm, to purchase items as well as picking up gardening tips from our expert students and staff.

In addition to the work the students conduct on site at the centre, our Horticulture Department is very active in the local community and have worked on an abundance of projects all across Salford with local community groups.

Incredible Edible Salford is a project that encourages and implements the growing of edible produce - fruits and vegetables - at sites across Salford, accessible by members of the local community. Plans are in place for a special allotment area to be created at Eccles Sixth Form Centre, to be utilised by the students as a learning tool, but will also be a hub for the local community to grow and reap their own edible produce.

Local Sports Memorabilia Collector Steve Edwards, is an avid collector of memorabilia connected to all sports and would like to hear from anyone who may have old programmes, tickets, photos, medals etc from any sports club.

Steve says, “If you‘re a longstanding fan or have past connections to the club, you might have items in the attic that hasn’t seen the light of day for years! I would really love to hear from anyone with football, rugby, speedway, horse racing, cricket and golf items, especially pre 1960.

The tankards and crystal football in the photo above once belonged to the great Manchester United legend, Sammy McLLroy. These were given to him when voted Player of the Year. Sammy, Man U’s best player in the 1970`s and 1980`s, is now an ambassador of the club.

The Monton Tart The Monton Tart has made the news across the North West.

Created by Selo Deli owners, Irena Pistun and husband Roman, the tart’s recipe remains a secret but it is already a firm favourite in the area. Irena has donated a tart to The Festival, and anyone who joins MVCA on 6th July will receive a taste of the delicious Monton Tart!

Irena adds, “We're keen to put Monton on the map and launching the tart has meant we've attracted people from Didsbury, Bury and Bolton... all of them coming to the village and into the shop to see what the fuss is about. School holidays are fast approaching! The summer can seem long and daunting so now is the time to start planning a few activities and days out.

Keep kids happy by keeping them active! The Dept. of Health advises that children over the age of five, should have at least one hour of exercise every day.

Being active doesn’t have mean big trips every day, but can be simple things such as swimming, a nature trail in the woods or country park, cycling on the loopline, fruit picking at a local farm, gardening, or even holding your own mini-sports day at home! You’ll find many local groups and clubs that run summer holiday sessions, plus free or inexpensive activities run by Salford Council.

For full days out, we asked the authors of the guide book “Babies & Kids in the City” for some more unique suggestions...

GREAT DAYS OUT What’s great about our area of the North West is the fantastic range of things to do with the kids, plus the fact that you can always find something to suit any budget. When school holidays approach, I grab the calendar, call a few friends and book in plenty of days out. We usually allow for a couple of “pricier” excursions - things the kids will love - adrenalin stuff or theme parks, then look online for any cheap deals that might be coming up! We’re all National Trust members, so other days are filled by packing picnics, arming the kids with lightsabers and fair y wands and heading out for a general run-around, or if the weather’s sunny - we’re straight up the coast to the beaches.

The scores of museums on our doorstep are a must of course - we love the big-names but don’t overlook the small ones - you’ll find some wonderful exhibitions and often they’re a lot quieter during the holiday peak periods!

Come rain or shine, we’ve got it covered and here’s a few ideas from our new book Babies & Kids in the City for your summer hols!

City Airport and Heliport (Barton) is a lovely place to take little plane enthusiasts. The large on-site restaurant serves food all day and overlooks the take off and landing area. There’s also a securely fenced-off play area, with kiddie cars, swings and a climbing frame. The kids loved watching the light aircraft zipping around and we took a short walk to the control tower where 44 ON OUR DOORSTEP

you can climb up to a balcony with views across the runway. We also had a peek inside the tiny museum filled with aviation memorabilia that’s situated in a portakabin across the car park.

There’s no cost to visit City Airport so it’s great to pop in for a flying visit! www.cityairportandheliport.com Clitheroe Castle Towering above the charming town of Clitheroe is the 800-year-old Norman keep of Clitheroe Castle. There are two ways up, either by climbing c.100 steep steps, or via a buggy-friendly path to the museum entrance and then about 10 steps. It’s worth the trip as the views of the town and surrounding Ribble Valley are breathtaking.

Just below the keep is a beautifully designed outdoor creative activity space with pan-pipes and periscopes amongst other things! After a trip to the museum and cafe, we finished with a wander through the large formal gardens. www.lancashire.gov.uk Haigh Country Park near Wigan is a great destination to explore with 250 acres of park and woodland plus some magnificent views towards the Welsh Hills. We enjoyed a nice amble with the buggy following the main drive running through the park but for those with older children there are plenty of nature trails and biking is popular too. Nip into the information office and pick up a History Route map detailing a 3km stroll taking in sights such as Swan Pond where

The National Cycling Centre has an indoor velodrome and a brilliant BMX track, so grab your budding Trotty or Bradley and try out the bikes! You must register in advance of your visit (free and straightforward). We’d booked on the BMX track where you're provided with correctly sized bikes, helmets and protective wear. My five year old was apprehensive and mainly kept to the flat but was pleased as punch just to be on the bikes in the gear. The eight year old loved every minute! BMX-ing starts at five years, but there's also strider (balance bike) sessions
