Welcome Now we have all recovered from Christmas (I hope!), we have an eventful two months ahead of us with Valentines Day around the corner, Chinese New Year on 16th February, Mother’s Day on 11th March and Good Friday falls early this year on 30th March. It’s time to shop for gifts once more for our nearest and dearest. To help inspire a few ideas and eliminate the stress of shopping, we have pulled together a guide of where you can shop for gifts right on our doorstep! With romance in the air, Wedding Shows are in full flow again. For a list of the local shows and fayres, take a look at our Wedding feature. Sadly, our local history guru, John Kirwin, is retiring from writing for the magazine. I know may of our readers look forward to his articles and will miss them. We would like to thank John for his constant flow of interesting features. It has been a pleasure publishing them, and personally, I have learnt so much about our local area and its rich history from John. So thank you once again.

Make a difference...

Join the Manchester Midnight Walk 2018 Join St Ann’s Hospice for their annual Manchester Midnight Walk and make a real difference to a local charity.

This 10km sponsored midnight walk around the city is a really fun way to support St Ann’s. The walk begins and ends at Manchester Cathedral, with a great build up including performers, stalls and a Zumba warm-up. The evening starts from 9.00pm and fancy dress is welcomed, although every walker will receive a yellow t-shirt which can be decorated.

The walk also includes a Memory Garden, where messages to loved ones can be left and all those who finish the walk will get a medal to celebrate their achievement.

Everyone over the age of 11 is welcome to take part, so why not get a group together and make it a night out with a difference?

The Walker Family will be there, walking in memory of their Dad, Mike. Mike became a patient in 2016, and the family did the walk for the first time last year. They said “We did it with lots of our family and friends and it was good fun, and we’ll be there again this year. We will always be involved somehow with St Ann’s, raising money or volunteering our time. It’s our way of saying thank you for looking after our Dad.” To register for the event please visit our website www.mmwalk.org.uk or call 0161 498 3631.

St Mary’s Church, Ellenbrook

Exciting Developments Planned for 2018 If you have passed by St. Mary’s Church, Ellenbrook, you will know that the land directly in front of the church is in a poor state of repair. This year, we wish to remedy that and create an attractive, welcoming, frontage where brides can disembark their carriage with decorum and to provide a more dignified parking space for hearses. We also wish to open the view to the Ellen Brook, and create a natural, woodland area between the path and the stream. So we plan to replace the concrete fence with metal railings, in keeping with grade 2 listed building. Finally, as we prepare to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1, and with the full support

10 ON OUR DOORSTEP

of the British Legion and local community groups, we intend to relocate the Ellenbrook War Memorial, currently at the rear of the church, to a more prominent and visible presence at the front. (At one time, Ellenbrook Road was, of course, the main thoroughfare, where the cenotaph was on full display.) Ellenbrook Church was erected in 1725 but our history tells us there has been a chapel on the site for almost 800 years. It is our desire to be at the heart of the communities we serve and to restore the exterior landscape, fitting for the village church. If you would like to support this project, practically or financially, please contact the Vicar, The Reverend Karen Owen, via email at: karen.h.owen@ntlworld.com

St Mark’s Church, Worsley

The Mystery of the Stained Glass Windows Visitors to the parish church of St. Mark, Worsley, are often impressed by the stunning stained glass windows that stand behind the two altars, in the nave and in the chapel, and that includes Queen Victoria in October 1851. Mystery has long surrounded the origins of these windows. It has been suggested by Harold Milliken that they came from Italian, Belgian or German sources, with some traces of Old English. Recent evidence has come to light which may help to be more precise about their history. However, one surprising discovery is that some of the stained glass is by A W N Pugin, who came to the church in August 1851 with (Sir) Charles Barry to help oversee the installation of some

new glass, eight weeks before the arrival of the Queen. Another window of interest is the BurneJones window in the Ellesmere Chapel, made by the studios of this Pre-Raphaelite artist. An illustrated talk on all the glass is being planned to be held in the church on Friday 23rd March, at 7.30pm. This will be given by Chris Parkinson of the CVMA, a body of scholars based at York University, who specialise in medieval stained glass .

Admission will be free, with refreshments served at the interval. All are welcome.

Local History

Worsley New Hall

Local residents will be familiar with the story of Worsley New Hall - built by the 1st Earl of Ellesmere, occupied by his family in 1846, and demolished just a century later. There are several sketches and photos of this building which many readers will recognise. However, one has remained hidden for many years and has only recently been located. It is by Frederick James Shields.

seemed to like the view of the Church very well and took it in to show his lordship. He returned with the gracious information that his lordship was very well pleased with it, and that I was to execute two more views of the hall, to be sent down to the house in London, 10 Belgrave Square, where they intend proceeding on Friday.' For this commission, the boy received the 'fabulous' sum of £5.

Frederick James Shields was born in Hartlepool, Durham, in 1833. His father John moved the family to London in 1839 in search of better work. Still struggling to find a good position, he moved to Newton-le-Willows in 1848 and sent for his son Frederick to join him. By this time, Frederick was showing signs of being a very talented artist, having followed a course of study in the evenings in London.

The picture is now part of the Wellcome Collection in London. It measures 31.3 cm by 50.9 and is described as a drawing in pencil with white paint. The artist's signature and date appear in the bottom right-hand corner of the image. He was at this time sixteen years of age. Sadly, his father died a few weeks after this work was completed.

Shortly after coming to Lancashire, his father recognised that his own health was failing him and he returned to London for medical help at the Brompton Hospital, leaving Frederick at an address in Manchester. Over a period of about four months, the young boy (then aged 16) made several visits to Worsley, making drawings and sketches of the parish church of St. Mark, Worsley New Hall and local residents, in the hope of selling his work. In his diary, he made many references to visiting the rector and the Earl. On 27 November 1849, he wrote: '[Mr. Rasbotham] 22 ON OUR DOORSTEP

His career then blossomed after his difficult early years. Frederic Shields (he started to write his name that way) moved back to London in 1864, where he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Through him, he came to know members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, people like Ford Madox Brown, Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. He was present at the death of Rossetti on Easter Sunday 1882. A gallery at Ordsall Hall bears his name, a tribute to his brief stay there in the 1870's.

Tuesday over an eight week period, and equips participants with physical and mental techniques to maintain their own mental wellbeing. In Salford alone, over 1 in 7 people are prescribed antidepressants every year. Nationally, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health condition every year. Tackling such pressing demand isn’t easy, which is why at Mind in Salford, public support helps us make a positive difference. Our quality services, which are provided by our team of trained professionals, include: debt and welfare advice, mental health training, and advocacy support; helping to represent the legal and emotional needs of those who need it the most.

To perform our vital community services, we rely on a number of income sources such as grants, donations and charity shop sales, much of the revenue from which gets directed to our main HQ in London. However, if you’d like contribute to the wellbeing of people in your community, why not set up a challenge event? It could be anything from a sponsored swim to taking the dog for a walk… Whatever it may be, if you can raise money for it, you could help to make a difference on your doorstep.

As well as supporting our community, we do all we can to encourage people to adopt a conscious lifestyle, offering a specialist mindfulness and meditation course for both individuals and businesses. The course takes place for two hours every
