There are three workshop groups based at Pendleton Sixth Form College meeting once a week to develop creative skills. The groups are divided into 6-11, 11-16 and 16 year olds+. Big Splash with Aqua Babies!

Local babies are making a big splash in their Aqua Babies classes held at Springwood School in Swinton!

And the remarkable progress of a pair of two-year old tots, Ella Ryding and Christopher Colborn, both from Salford, has illustrated just how effective the Aqua Babies classes can be.

“Ella is an advanced pupil who swims beautifully underwater for a full ten seconds. She has always enjoyed swimming and we are currently working on her leg kick. She is my little fish,” says teacher Michelle Potkins, “and Christopher is swimming for over ten seconds under water, he has a brilliant leg and arm action with loads of confidence.”

Ella’s mum Amanda said, “Ella’s dad and I wanted her to feel safe around water and we

chose Aqua Babies because of its great reputation. Ella has gained confidence in the water and also learned lots of different swimming techniques in a fun filled environment."

Lleyton Coombes, born December 2006, lives in Salford with mum Jo & dad Lee. He was born at Hope Hospital (Salford Royal) and spent the first week of his life in hospital due to having jaundice like many other babies do, but after some preliminary tests he had to endure months of invasive tests until diagnosed with Niemann Pick Type C disease at 6 months old.

Every year, once targets have been achieved for Lleyton, the excess is donated to NPDG UK. In 2011, the first full year of fundraising, just under £5,000 was donated to them.

Christmas 2009 was a difficult time for the family as Lleyton had started to show signs of his condition and to deteriorate.

Niemann Pick is neurological illness that is life limiting and a very rare disease. Life expectancy is 10-15yrs of age depending on age at diagnosis.

Those affected will usually develop dementia as a symptom of the disease.

There are only 50-80 children diagnosed with this condition in the UK and about 500 worldwide.

Due to the low occurrence, there is NO Government funding for support or research, and funds have to be raised privately, relying on the generosity of the public for donations.

Children are sometime misdiagnosed as having ADHD or similar or die before diagnosis.

Symptoms are: • Enlarged spleen • Enlarged liver • Learning difficulties and progressive intellectual decline • Seizures • Slurred, irregular speech • Sudden loss of muscle tone which may lead to falls (Cataplexy) • Tremors • Unsteady gait • Clumsiness • Walking problems (Ataxia) Most of the symptoms are similar to Alzheimer’s and therefore has been dubbed by the press as “Baby Alzheimer’s”.

A new exciting addition for 2013 will be a Sainsbury Local convenience shop. A Sainsbury’s spokesman advised, “It is due to open to the public on Wednesday 10th April 2013 and will trade from 7am to 11pm”.

Historically know as “Booth Town”, is a former mining and cotton mill trade community.

These days Boothstown is known for its canal-side setting and the Bridgewater Marina, both overlooked by The Moorings pub - a great place to relax and watch the boats slowly chug by.

In the village centre there is a wide offering of services available including the essentials such as a post office, chemist, dry cleaners, hairdressers, a bakery and selection of pubs and takeaways.

THE NEW HALL REBORN? When the last stone of Worsley New Hall was removed to complete its demolition in 1947, 102 years of aristocratic grandeur came to an end. Memories of Worsley’s departed gentry began to fade as vegetation spread over the razed remains of their famous mansion, which had hosted Royalty and Prime Ministers.

Beneath the ground level, unseen and unsuspected, lay the cellars awaiting re-discovery and elsewhere enigmatic remnants - the Kitchen Garden, a Grotto on a lake island, the Ice House… Rampant growth, of dense birch and rhododendron woodland, swiftly swamped the famed formal “parterre” gardens and silt flowed into the lake, halving its extent. The once-majestic terraces, their retaining walls removed. collapsed into a slope. Ten years of growth, disturbed only by the building of a Cold War Civil Defence bunker, soon abandoned, created what appeared to be a dense and ancient woodland, enjoyed only by camping Boy Scouts and abundant birdlife... ...until the present day, as now the glories of the 19th century may soon be reborn. The present owners of Middlewood, plan to redevelop not only the site of the New Hall, but also part of Grange Farm (the last operating major farm in Salford) across the Canal. The “footprint” of the vanished Hall will be utilised as the basis of a five-star 200 bedroom Hotel & Spa. Last year, a national competition was held and architects invited to design the new hotel. The aim was to avoid duplication of the previous Tudor-style of the Old Hall and encourage a fusion which would respect the classical stately home style, be in sympathy with the rural setting, yet possess the best of modern facilities.

Grandeur was the guiding principal, taking advantage of the elevated site and landscaping.

A pre-requisite for all entries to the Competition was that the original terraces would be restored, the “Parterre” formal gardens recreated and the fountains flow again. In place of the degraded scrub birch wood the original vista of “six counties” would return, sweeping down to a lake returned to its original size.

The recent archaeological “dig” on the site, supervised by Salford University, found the New Hall cellars largely intact, which could be incorporated into the new Hotel as a heritage link. Similarly, the Bunker may find a new lease of life as a Conference Centre. Finally, a golf course, for which Planning Permission has been granted by Salford Council, will be established, partially on the north bank of the Canal, but mainly flanking the Canal’s south bank on Grange Farm. Intended to be of international Tournament quality, the Developer hopes the course will attract major events to Worsley.

In October 2012, the competition, overseen by the Royal Institute of British Architects, was won

by Allies and Morrison, whose winning design can be seen below.

The proposed development has favourable aspects, not least the creation of local employment and the regeneration of a small “brownfield” part of an otherwise beautiful natural area - Middlewood.

However, concerns exist for the environmental protection of existing old woodland habitat for woodpeckers, bullfinches and other endangered birds that exist in Middlewood. Also, Grange Farm is a vital area for rare birdlife and the monoculture of grass associated with golf fairways is unfavourable for birds and other creatures.

Some 87 species of birds, amphibians such as the Great Crested Newt, and the endangered water vole exist here. They all enjoy status as Protected Species and the land itself is designated Green Belt.

This land, part of Chat Moss, is now Salford's only remaining window on open countryside and should be protected as a vital asset for future generations to enjoy.
