COME AND SING WITH US!

Make

Experience the thrill of singing in a large choir with Salford Choral Society.

We’re looking for new members to join our friendly and accessible choir of around 100 people – aged from 18 to 80-plus. We sing classical and modern pieces under the leadership of our inspirational music director Tom Newall who makes every rehearsal fun.

EXCITING VENUES

We perform four concerts a year at top class venues like the Royal Northern College of Music, supported by professional musicians and soloists. All new members are very welcome but we’re particularly keen to nd more tenors and basses.

It’s helpful if you can read music or have sung in a choir before, though there is plenty of support available for non-music readers, including video recordings of all rehearsals.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

We rehearse Wednesday evenings (7.30-9.30pm) at Hemsley House, Crescent, Salford M5 4PE. There’s no audition and you can try us out for a few weeks for free.

To nd out more, email our membership secretary Maureen Price: membership@salfordchoral.org.uk or ring her on 07854 331760. www.salfordchoral.org.uk @SalfordChoralSociety

Our church has been at the heart of beautiful Roe Green for over 200 years, through good and bad times. It’s heritage is, and remains, part of the Independent Methodist movement.

The heart of the church though, is to love the village and surrounding area, to be a family and community, following Jesus, we believe the love of Jesus has the power to change, transform lives and whole communities.

During the rst lockdown we started a business by business, followed by a street by street, prayer letter campaign. At a time of uncertainty, the letters were really well received. Our heart is to encourage and bring hope; recently we embarked on the same prayer letter campaign, letting the residents of each street, know what day we will be praying for them.

We are a busy church with a Sunday Gathering at 10.30am (everyone welcome!), Monday co ee morning, Tuesday toddler group and bible study in the evening, Thursday evening praise and prayer and Friday is our youth group.

We hold events for Salford Loaves and Fishes, a wonderful charity in the heart of Salford, who do an incredible work for those who are really struggling.

• Toy Service, 4th December. Bring new unwrapped toys for donation to Salford Loaves and Fishes to give to parents who cannot a ord to buy gifts.

• Brass Band Carol Service, 18th December 3pm.

ECCLES MUM STROLLS TOWARDS 40 FITTER AND HEALTHIER THAN EVER

An Eccles mum of two has found that she is the healthiest and ttest she has ever been just before she turns 40 in 2023.

Nicola Barlow lost 4 stone after joining a Slimming World group and following their generous and liberating Food Optimising plan, but it wasn’t until after the pandemic that she decided to throw herself into their Body Magic program as well.

Slimming World’s Body Magic program allows members to overcome any barriers that they may have around exercise by addressing psychological and behavioural aspects of motivation to change, leading to a commitment to being active that is an intrinsic part of daily routine.

Nicola explains that following lockdown she had become less active and that she did not want this to impact her health in the future.

“I know from my consultant that regular activity

helps prevent and manage conditions like Stroke, Heart Disease, Type 2 diabetes and several cancers. I also know that it helps maintain a healthy weight, and has a positive impact on mental health. It was important to me that I made exercise part of my daily routine but at the same time make sure that it was inexpensive. Losing the weight rst gave me the con dence to join a hiking group, and I have never looked back since. The weight loss has meant that I can hike up a mountain without feeling un t, I have gained more energy, I’m happier and my joints are able to move better”.

Nicola isn’t alone; recent research shows that within just three months of joining Slimming World, 66% of members do enough physical activity to be classed as active by the NHS and, compared to the general population, they’re less sedentary and feel more positive about physical activity, saying it makes them feel more happy, healthy, con dent, and better about their body.

PLOTTING INTO THE NEW YEAR

October was the last 2022 committee meeting of Tindall Street allotment group (TSAG) and a big surprise was the resignation of the chairman, Don Booth, since he has been a mainstay of the group for many years. The committee needed someone to chair its activities and they sent for me, from the Plotters polytunnel and unanimously elected me, Geo Hamilton, to the position, pending the AGM which is scheduled for April 2023. It’s an interim measure, which will be challenging alongside our busy Plotters plans.

THE PLOTTERS: PLANS FOR 2023

We decided that the seeds, for our spring planting, needed sorting and separating into parcels to pass on to our neighbour plotholders, with whom we share our seeds to keep costs down. Some seeds need to be in their compost quite early to give them a good start and several take a long time to get to maturity, so care is taken with timing. Parsnips are a good example as they are very slow to reach maturity and as we need them ready for Christmas 2023, early planting is a must.

We had a generous donation of garlic cloves and have been delighted with their rapid growth in the polytunnel. They have joined our rst successful g cutting and we hope to see early results from both, particularly if mild weather conditions prevail in early 2023.

After the 2022 crop of potatoes was so proli c, we have decided to grow the same variety again this year. We’ll see how the 2023 crop di ers and compare weather conditions for a proper assessment of any variations. This will be useful for future reference.

Some of our neighbour plotholders have requested that we share sweet pepper seeds - their fruit is a

particular favourite with some in salads and stir fries, as a change from more usual crops. Whilst this will be a new adventure we’ll still be setting some Roma tomatoes - they are a very tasty plum type and a particular favourite with passata producers and soup makers for their avour and juiciness. Also, some Sun Gold sweet tomatoes, a tiny favourite with everyone, along with red and white onions, since they are so useful in cooking and salads.

An issue which the Plotters have needed to address for some time, is making our site dog-proof. We have two very tiny family friends who keep guard over us vocally, but each has a propensity to escape onto other allotments. They like to run and dig holes together, which doesn’t make us popular with other plotholders and is against the allotment rules. Much to their chagrin, we have erected fences, preventing them from escaping, and they are now limited to excavating holes in our polytunnel beds and trying to reach Australia via our carrot and cabbage beds. It’s costing us a fortune in compost but doing very well for the on site shop sales!

Let’s hope that 2023 is a more typical weather year, otherwise I will be reporting even more crop issues and looking at what other changes we need to make to oblige nature.

Did you know Salford has over 60 parks and green spaces which you can enjoy for free to help with the cost of living?

Walk along the Bridgewater canal or visit Blackleach or Clifton country parks to spot birds and explore local industrial history. You’ll nd the Gru alo and friends at Clifton Country park and woodland creatures at Worsley Woods’ sculpture trails.

Walk or cycle Salford’s loop lines, which were once busy railways and look out for green gyms along the way or play ball in your local park to stay t, boost your mental health and keep the kids happy.

Many Salford parks have active ‘Friends’ groups which work with Salford City Council sta to maintain and improve them and host community events. If your local park doesn’t have a friends group, council sta can advise on setting one up.

Salford Voluntary Rangers work with Salford City Council’s ranger team to enhance a number of country parks and greenspaces, control non-native invasive plants and organise events particularly at Easter and Halloween, regular walks and the annual Walking Festival.

Volunteering sessions run most weekdays for between one to four hours and it’s a great way to make new friends, learn new skills and get a quali cation. Some volunteers are studyingLevel 2 Horticulture and AQA

quali cations in improving general habitats for pollinators such as bees and improving wetland habitats for wildlife.

The ranger team has also been working with volunteers at Blackleach Country Park to create a huge native wild ower area by the visitor’s centre which will become a great home for a variety of butter ies.

At Worsley Woods the volunteers are trimming vegetation threatening to hide the paths and repairing damaged boardwalks as well as planting trees in the woods and at Clifton Country Park and the Crescent meadows.

Councillor Barbara Bentham, lead member for environment and community safety said: “We are incredibly lucky to have such amazing green areas on our doorsteps and so many dedicated volunteer groups working hard to improve them. There is such a huge variety of things to see and do, I regularly spot swans, geese and ducks just on my commute to work. Head outside and who knows what you will nd. If you are lucky you might even spot our wild parakeets.”

To nd out more about volunteering please email rangers@salford.gov.uk

Visit www.salford.gov.uk/parks for more information or follow the Rangers on Facebook or Instagram or Salford Wildlife on Twitter.

C RIME PREVENTION TIPS THIS WINTER

The winter months have arrived, and so have the earlier darker nights.

We, your local Neighbourhood Policing Team, want to keep you safe by sharing a few simple and inexpensive precautions that can minimize the risk of being targeted by burglars or scammers.

Use a timer to switch lights on to give the impression someone is at home. They are readily available from your local hardware stores.

Lock all doors and windows whenever possible

Keep keys and valuables out of reach from cat aps or letterboxes.

Look out for your neighbours, especially the elderly and vulnerable for “cuckooing”. This is a form of crime in which the home of a vulnerable person is taken over by a criminal to use for illegal activities or as a place for them to live.

Work with neighbours to set up, or join, a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Details can be found at www.ourwatch.org.uk – or alternatively set up a WhatsApp group to keep each other updated.

If possible, have a house alarm and/or CCTV as this could act as a deterrent from your house being burgled.

GOOD NEWS!

Greater Manchester Police: Most Improved Force in the Country Chief Constable Stephen Watson and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham con rm that Greater Manchester Police has been removed by His Majesty’s Inspectorate from Special Measures and is no longer required to be in the Inspectorate’s “Engage” monitoring process.
