WOOD STREET MISSION:

HELPING LOCAL FAMILIES SINCE 1869

W

ood Street Mission is a children’s charity based just off Deansgate in Manchester City Centre. Established in 1869, we support families from Manchester and Salford who are living in poverty. In 2019, our Family Basics project helped 3,784 children with clothing, bedding, toiletries, nappies, and baby equipment. We also helped 3,191 children with brand new school uniform through our project SmartStart. Our Books Forever project supported 273 children in our Book Clubs and in the academic year 2018/19 our Book Roadshows in schools, provided 929 children with 9,500 books!

6 ON OUR DOORSTEP

The clothing and everyday essentials bring the obvious benefits, but books bring escapism, creativity, a sense of pride and literacy skills that will help the children progress in education and ultimately help them to break the cycle of poverty. With your support, we will continue to provide for those who need it most and give them a chance to break that cycle. After all, we’ve been doing it for over 150 years, we can and still do, make a difference. If you would like to know more about our work and would be interested in supporting us then please take a look at our website. If you need help from us or you know a family who needs help, all the information regarding referrals can be also be found on our website. All our projects are free for families to access on referral. www.woodstreetmission.org.uk 26 Wood Street, Manchester M3 3EF Tel: 0161 834 3140 Registered charity - number 1078337

10K 4 10K FUNDRAISER Georgia’s Children of the World

10k 4 10k is Georgia’s Children’s latest ‘alternative’ fundraiser with Matt Maxwell undertaking the monumental task of running 10k for 100 consecutive days to raise funds for disadvantaged kids in Salford. Supported as always by our amazing community, and this time local Salford Rugby legend Adrian Morley, on Saturday 5th December Matt will complete his task with a full marathon starting from Dukes Drive in Monton. Funds raised will buy bikes and scooters to help get some of the most deprived kids of Salford get active again. We will also be supporting HeidiLou, a very special 8 year old from Swinton who suffers from severe Cerebral Palsy. Here’s a few words from her mum Kate... “This year has been tough and has had a huge effect on my little girl, mentally and physically and

not in a good way sadly. Unable to have access to the already limited NHS services and recently undergoing double hip reconstruction, still currently in her spica cast at home, it’s been heart breaking and I’ve watched her slowly lose her range of movement. Her muscles have become tighter over lockdown and lives in daily discomfort and pain. Heidi-Lou needs therapy and equipment to help her live pain free and hopefully over time build up her range of movement and keep her muscles loose so we can prevent further surgeries. Please help me raise the funds to do this. If you can help, head over to Heidi-Lou’s Happiness on Facebook and message me.” www.justgiving.com/fundraising/georgias10k www.just4children.org/children-helped2020/ heidi-lous-happiness

GMP SALFORD NORTH WEST:

PROTECT YOUR HOME THIS WINTER

T

here is an increased threat of burglary during the winter months, often due to homes that are left in darkness signalling to burglars that no one is home. So, we would like to issue our annual reminder to residents to use simple steps to stop burglars using the shield of darkness and targeting their homes. From using light timers, to leaving lights on and even leaving the television on, little changes really can make a big difference, and help deter criminals.

Burglary can have a big impact on victims, and we continue to work hard to tackle this problem. Over the past 9 months, we have made numerous arrests, recovered stolen vehicles and are in the process of conducting a large scale investigation. We continue to gather intel, and adapt our strategies to ensure we are targeting hotspot areas, and patterns of repeat offending. We also work closely with our crime prevention teams to identify long-term problem solving for this crime type, which we will be able to update you with soon. We also run regular targeted operations with colleagues from a range of specialised units. As part of the increased threat, vehicles can also be targeted. GMP is encouraging residents to remain vigilant this winter, asking everyone to play their part to keep the homes in Greater Manchester safe. During these darker nights, GMP neighbourhood officers will be stepping up patrols in hotspot areas, but it is also important we all play our part.

Here are ways protect your homes and vehicles: Make sure your doors and windows are locked at all times, whether you are home or not. If you have one, setting your burglar alarm when leaving the house and when you go to bed. Check existing door locks and ensure they are up to date with the latest lock standards. Contact your local Master Locksmith for advice Use additional security measures such as patio door locks which can be fitted over door handles or bolted down behind a sliding door. Sash Jammers can also be fitted to doors and windows, but check it won’t invalidate any warranty on your doors. Make your home look occupied during the hours of darkness using a light-timer to help. Ensure keys and other valuables are stored out of reach and out of sight. If you have a keyless entry vehicle, the fob is constantly emitting a signal. Block the signal by using a metal tin or faraday pouch (see below), and don’t forget about the spare key! Register property on Immobilise.com, so property can be returned to the rightful owner if recovered. Keep bins away from windows as they can be used as a climbing aid for burglars Work with neighbours to set up or join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Details can be found at www.ourwatch.org.uk Review security lighting Follow the Neighbourhood Team on Facebook (GMP Little Hulton, Walkden, Ellenbrook & Worsley), Twitter (GMP Salford or Insp Allen) or on the Nextdoor app for regular updates. If you have any questions or concerns, contact us by Email: SalfordNorthWest@gmp.pnn.police.uk Phone: 0161 856 5035 These channels are not monitored 24/7 and must not be used to report a crime or in an emergency. If you see anything suspicious call 101, or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, report it anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Keep safe everyone! 10 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Talking About Mental Health with Mind in Salford

This past year has been difficult for many of us, and mental health has been spoken about in the news more than ever. Uncertainty, not being able to carry out our usual routines or see loved ones as much as we’d like, and cancelled plans have all had a big impact on our collective wellbeing. But when it comes to our day-to-day lives, how can we have conversations about mental health, and seek support? Mental health can be just as important to our overall wellbeing as physical health. However, talking about mental health can seem more difficult, as many of us worry about the stigma of talking about it. This is why it’s important to talk about mental health openly and supportively, just as we would with physical health. HOW CAN YOU TALK ABOUT IT?

There is no ‘perfect’ way to have a conversation about mental health, but here are some useful tips on how you can talk about it with others: Talk in a place that feels comfortable, natural and safe for both of you - communicating in the way you normally would, whether face to face (following Government guidelines), over the phone or video call, or messages, will make the conversation easier. Give the other person your full attention – try not to look at distractions such as your phone or change topics.

Ask open questions that don’t have a simple yes or no answer – questions such as ‘How does that make you feel?’ give the other person time and space to talk. Take your time – the person opening up may need time to think about their words, so sometimes there may be gaps while they work out what to say. This is normal, there’s no rush. If the other person doesn’t want to talk, that’s OK – even if the other person doesn’t take up your offer of support the first time, this might encourage them to feel supported and to open up in future. WHERE TO SEEK SUPPORT?

When it comes to seeking support, there are lots of local services available to help, or who can help advise you on where to go. Mind in Salford is an independent, user focused charity providing vital services to make a positive difference to the wellbeing and mental health of local people. We have a number of services available, such as: Statutory & Non-Statutory Advocacy Mindfulness Courses & Practitioner Training Welfare Rights & Debt Advice Workplace & Community Training Wellbeing Services LGBTQI+ Group Support & 1-to-1 Therapies For more information, get in touch with our team: T: 0161 710 1070 | E: info@mindinsalford.org.uk @mindinsalford @MindinSalford @mind_in_salford www.mindinsalford.org.uk

How to Get Through Challenging Times

How has 2020 been for you?

For most of us, it’s been a bit of a challenge to say the least and that’s led to a rise in common mental health problems such as anxiety, stress and depression. That’s no surprise. Our brains are hard-wired to fear change and uncertainty. When we’re going through challenging times, our fight/flight response is activated and our brains respond by creating: ANXIETY - so that we can run away from a threat DEPRESSION - so we can hide from a threat, or ANGER - so we can fight back. These responses work great for short-term, immediate threats, but not longer-term pandemics! What can we do to make sure we get through challenging times without damaging our mental health?

1) Focus on the Positives Many people have enjoyed extra time with families this year, or the slower pace of life. If nothing else, going through tough times makes you more resilient! Writing down what we’re grateful for each day reduces that fight/flight response. 2) Take Action It’s easy to feel that we have no control over life’s events, but we do. If you’re missing friends, send a card or flowers. If you’re worried about getting ill, improve your health. If you’re worried about your job, re-write your C.V. Taking small steps forward will calm your anxiety. 3) Recognise the Signs Your body will tell you when you’re starting to struggle, and ignoring the signs always makes it worse. Maybe you get migraines, struggle to sleep or snap at others. Whatever it is, once you notice it,

taking time out to get yourself back on track will stop it getting worse. 4) Look after Yourself This means saying no sometimes, putting your needs first and asking for help. Give your body and mind what it needs. Don’t be surprised if you need more sleep or rest when times are tough. Know also that anxiety is a normal response, and you can take back control if you look after yourself. Any kind of movement releases endorphins and a walk in nature has double the benefit so try and get outside during the day. 5) Give your brain extra time to process Increasing your sleep gives your brain chance to process your stresses; as do activities such as meditation, deep breathing, mindfulness and guided hypnosis. They lower stress and increase your ability to cope. You can listen to guided relaxation sessions for free on my YouTube Channel Step Ahead Hypnotherapy. 6) Journal Writing down your concerns can help you to process them. It also means you can shut the book on them and go and do something you enjoy. 7) Have fun We need some form of release so watch things that make you laugh, plan a zoom quiz or any activity that makes you happy. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2021! For more advice contact:

Health & Wellbeing

Mindfulness:

A Way to Live Well h Slow down the process if you can, feel the liquid passing through lips, tongue, throat. Observe if your body naturally relaxes when it passes through any specific area. h Enjoy your tea and when you’ve finished, notice how engaged you felt with your present moment.

Mindfulness is a practice I engaged in unknowingly when I was younger through Indian Arts but when life events led me to learning it formally, I discovered a way of living that was highly empowering. It is a form of meditation where we practice bringing our attention to the present moment in a way that is deliberate and non-judgemental. It can be practised while sitting or when we’re on the go. Mindfulness is a form of strength training for the brain. Where we find ourselves worrying about unfinished work, something that was said, overwhelming tasks or how we fit in, we use this practice to enhance our awareness of the present moment. Some of the initial benefits of this practice are enhanced concentration, sensory clarity, and non-judgemental appreciation. A QUICK EXERCISE FOR YOU TRY AT HOME

Here’s a simple example you can try in the comfort of your own home. It only takes a couple of minutes. Make yourself a cup of tea and notice the following:

Through this practice, we actively step out of our autopilot and access a part of our brain that is more engaged, creative and able to solve problems. This is a part of our brain that is better aligned with our values. Practiced strategically, it can also be a catalyst towards much deeper transformation. We gain stability and greater self-insight. We find ourselves aligning more convincingly with what’s important to us. We strive less, trust ourselves, and navigate life fully embodying who we are, all colours included. Mindfulness, coupled with mind-body education, can be effectively used for anxiety and stress. This is something I offer at Radiant Roots and you’re welcome to get in touch. Wellbeing is genuinely a global necessity. Join me and let’s prioritise your wellbeing. Sign up for our FREE guide: 30 Practical Suggestions for Stress & Anxiety and book a FREE consultation. Visit: www.radiant-roots.co.uk Email: connect@radiant-roots.co.uk

h As you wait for your tea to cool down, notice the artwork on your mug. What colours do you see on it? Notice the little details. Perhaps the insides have a different colour even.

@Radiant.Roots.Wellbeing

h If it’s not too hot to hold the mug in your palms,

what does the temperature feel like? Does the temperature feel different on each finger? h Take a nice whiff of your drink. How strong is the scent? How do you feel when the steam touches your forehead and nose? h When you’re ready to sip, observe how you are naturally careful with the first sip. EXPLORE SALFORD’S GREEN SPACES D

id you know that Salford has 74 parks - eight with Green Flag status. So this winter, why not don your big coat and wellies, pack a hot flask and sandwiches and explore one you’ve not yet tried. Here are some suggestions. Peel Park, which includes Salford Museum and Art Gallery, is the oldest; opened in 1846, it was the first truly public park in England. From 2016 to 2017, it underwent major redevelopment and was restored to its former Victorian glory. The park is also part of the 33 mile long Irwell Sculpture Trail, from Salford Quays to Bury. Find full details of the trail at www.irwellsculpturetrail.co.uk. Kersal Wetlands, off Littleton Road, is a stunning new outdoor space to enjoy, created as part of a £10 million flood protection scheme. It is a haven for birds and wildlife. The views includes the skyline of Manchester, the woodlands of Kersal Dale and the shimmering River Irwell. There are cycle paths and wonderful dog walks as well as ten hectares of wildflower habitat to explore. Clifton Country Park, further up the Irwell river valley, has 48 hectares of open space as well as the remains of the Wet Earth Colliery, sunk in 1740. Here you can explore acres of open woodland and meadows, enjoy lakeside walks, bring a picnic, go fishing or discover the hidden remnants of the city's industrial past. Bring children to play and enjoy refreshments in the visitor centre café.

green oasis has excellent links to surrounding areas and is linked by canal tow paths and cycle routes (66) to Worsley and further afield. Walk along the adjacent former railway lines ( ‘the looplines’) to Worsley Woods and back down the Bridgewater Canal, then reward yourself a takeaway brunch or coffee and cake in Monton Village! Worsley Woods, covers 30 hectares of woodland, brook and wetland habitats with Old Warke Dam at the southern end of the site. The Dam was built originally as a private boating and fishing lake for the first Earl of Ellesmere and much of the woodland was planted to create a game reserve. Now there’s a new jetty for great views over the Dam, new footpaths and seating. There’s a brand new adventure play area off Sefton Drive and a spring Wildflower Trail. The addition of RHS Garden Bridgewater, which is set to open on 11th May next year, will make the city an even greener and more beautiful place. You can watch a series of short films demonstrating Salford’s green credentials, plus a video on RHS Bridgewater, on the Visit Manchester website: www.visitmanchester.com/ideas-and-inspiration/ countryside/salfords-green-spaces For more parks go to www.salford.gov.uk/parks Clifton Country Park

Blackleach Country Park, just half a mile from Walkden town centre is also a haven for birds and other wildlife and a peaceful picnic spot. Explore the reservoir, meadows and woodlands. THE END OF THE PLOTTING YEAR by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

We are always busy down on the Macmillan plot. Over autumn, whilst the weather was good, we remodelled the pond area, removed all the weeds and sowed a plethora of wildflower seeds. We are expecting a glorious show next summer! Whilst we were on holiday in September, friends from nearby plots laid out nonslip boarding along our paths. I’m a bit wobbly on my feet these days, so this enables me to be much more mobile. I am very grateful to them. When our tomatoes finished this summer, we sprinkled lettuce seeds in the empty beds. We didn’t realise the scale of the crop, but we are now feeding greens to rabbits, chickens, family, friends and other plotholders!

24 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Our sprouts have loved this summer and we have some lovely big veggies - roll on a couple of good frosts and then we are ready for Christmas! Early in 2020 we applied for a grant to build 3 raised beds. The pandemic put paid to our plans but nearby plotholders donated timber and time so that we do have one new, very useful, large raised bed- we’re thinking ‘carrots’ for next year. Looking ahead to 2021, despite the ongoing pandemic, get ready to plant up your own crops. We have already planted our cauliflower and are ordering seeds for next year. Spring will soon be here and we will be ready for the tomatoes, chillies and peppers to be sown!

TIME TO GET COSY AS THE COLDER MONTHS SET IN

Local Business

with THE HEIGHT CARPETS & FLOORING

As winter approaches and we are spending more time at home, what better way to make us feel cosy than to get some new flooring! As co-owner of The Height Carpets & Flooring alongside my colleague Graham, I wanted to offer some tips on how to update your flooring to get ready for the autumn and winter, which will last for years to come. Think about installing quality underlay for insulation to keep your room cosy, reduce noise and give your flooring a more luxurious feel, whilst also helping it to last longer. Choose warm tones for all types of flooring but colours that will also brighten up your home on the dark nights. Different shades of grey such as this one are very popular at the moment. How much foot traffic will the room be getting? Will you need a tough durable carpet for a busy household or a soft silky thick pile carpet to create a truly luxurious feel? To bring the warmth of the Mediterranean to your home, consider statement vinyl for your bathroom, kitchen or dining space. We work with the local community building relationships as part of our service measuring up and fitting the latest designs of high-quality carpets, vinyl, laminate, LVT and rugs, to suit all budgets. Customer service is of utmost importance to us which is why we back up our work with a 12-month peace of mind guarantee – check out our Google reviews. In the meantime, to get your home ready for the winter and the next few years ahead, call Anthony (me) on 0161 465 3299 or visit our Facebook page.

Health & Wellbeing

Credit: RHS

Including a few plants in a bare front garden could reduce your stress levels as much as weekly mindfulness sessions, new research by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and a collaboration of Universities (Sheffield, Westminster and Virginia) has shown. Researchers have found that a greener front garden can also make you feel happier, more relaxed and closer to nature. The four year scientific research project added ornamental plants to previously bare front gardens in economically deprived streets of Salford. 42 residents received: 1 tree (juniper or snowy mespilus), 1 shrub (azalea), 1 climber (clematis), subshrubs (lavender, rosemary), bulbs (daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops) and bedding plants (petunia, viola) to fill 2 containers. The experimental design included a control group who received the plants one year later. By measuring the residents’ concentrations of cortisol hormone before and after the plants were added, the research team were able to see if the greenery had any impact on stress levels. Cortisol levels change across the day. In healthy diurnal patterns, levels peak in the early morning shortly after awakening and drop to the lowest concentration at night. Steeper daily declines indicate more effective regulation of circadian and hormonal mechanisms, which is a likely consequence of reduced stress. Before the experiment, only 24% of residents had healthy cortisol patterns. Over the course of the year following the plantings, this increased to 53% of residents having healthy cortisol patterns. Perceived stress levels decreased by 6% after introducing the plants. Over half (52%) of the residents said their front garden helped them be happier, 40% said it helped them be more relaxed and over one in four (26%) said it helped them be closer to nature. Dr Lauriane Suyin Chalmin-Pui, who conducted the research as part of her PhD and who is now an RHS 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Scientific Research Shows That Greener Front Gardens Reduce Stress Wellbeing Fellow, said; “We can now further evidence the vital need to incorporate plants into our front gardens and domestic spaces. This will require a change in the way we design, plan and build our living spaces.” “The stress reduction data is startling, in that we found such a significant response with just a small number of plants. Now we know that access to even a tiny patch of nature has beneficial effects for our health.” “Re-greening our neighbourhoods is really important. This data supplements other studies where we know garden plants help mitigate flooding, encourage biodiversity, reduce air pollution, as well as improve our health and wellbeing. We must reverse the trend to pave over our front gardens entirely, as it is possible to combine attractive, beneficial plantings with car parking space.” “Since I started this research, it’s been fascinating to see how adding plants to front gardens really did have a transformative effect on residents’ lives. Residents suffering from loneliness and other mental health issues found it especially uplifting and motivational.” Professor Alistair Griffiths (RHS) added; “With so many millions more people gardening after discovering a passion to grow during lockdown, the RHS hopes this research inspires more people to plant a few plants, from containers and window boxes to hedges and trees, in their street-side outside spaces. When we started this research four years ago, the world was a very different place. Today life is even more stressful for so many, meaning the results of this experiment are more important than ever. This research highlights the essential role of private gardens and the horticulture and landscape industry in delivering natural capital that improves the health of our nation. Together we should all try to make a positive difference one plant at a time.” Visit www.rhs.org.uk/garden-inspiration/gardentypes/front-gardens for ideas for parking and plants in front gardens. Community News

Eccles Rotary

COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Eccles Rotary has always been enthusiastic about supporting our local community and assisting small community groups. We have been awarding Make a Difference grants to local groups for a number of years and you can find out more about these by visiting our website. We are very aware that all of us at present are living in very difficult and different times because of the COVID-19 pandemic and that there will be a profound effect on the life experiences and opportunities for people across the whole of our Eccles community. We want to help in any way that we can to form local support groups to point people in the direction of statutory services that can help and if necessary assist in publicising the work of community groups and supporting them in their endeavours. We are not an organisation that is able to provide funding for individual families who have been severely affected by loss of income or services but

we do have ex te n s i ve knowledge of local organisations that may be able to help such as Mustard Tree, our local food bank, the Citizens Advice Bureau and we have good contacts with our local neighborhood teams and Councillors. We are also a group of people who have many years of experience of work and employment and we may be able to assist those people who have been forced to seek new employment by offering advice on optimizing CV’s and interviews. There will be other ways that we can support people in Eccles over the current crisis and if you think we can help you please contact us and we’ll see what we can do. www.ecclesrotary.org info@ecclesrotary.org

4 Reasons to keep Marketing through Lockdown Local businesses have been suffering the effects of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic for the past ten months with two national lockdowns and greater restrictions across Manchester in between. For business owners, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed and immediately look at cutting costs. Frequently in an economic crisis, businesses cut back on their marketing budget. However, studies over the last 100 years have shown time and time again that a downturn can provide a great opportunity to promote and increase market share.

1

4 Compelling Reasons to continue marketing: The “level of noise” in your marketplace will drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. So it’s your chance to stand out and to be heard more.

2

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to an increase in market share which results in an increase in profits.

3

It shows strength and stability in your business and inspires confidence. This something consumers are looking for during such uncertain times.

4

Cutting back on ad spend will lose your business “share of mind”, which may potentially lose you current and future sales. Stay at the forefront of customers’ minds so when they are able to spend again, they instinctively turn towards your business. So, think very carefully before cutting out your advertising spend. Reducing your local presence will leave the door wide open for competitors to take advantage and fill in the gaps. You may end up actually jeopardising your long-term market share.

Your Community During lockdown, we have all turned to eating and shopping locally more, so make sure you keep your presence in the local community, on and offline. Let existing and potential customers know you are still here to support and serve them.

“ When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise. ”
