PROTECT YOUR HOME THIS WINTER Winter is by far the most favoured season for thieves, with theft insurance claims rising by 34%. Here are some tips to make your home as safe as possible during these darker months.

Lock the doors and windows: Obvious perhaps, but many burglars still enter through unlocked doors! Don’t leave your house looking unoccupied: If going away, cancel all deliveries and milk. Ask a friend to check on the property and move any mail or newspapers from the doormat and letterbox. Leave curtains and blinds open. Create the illusion that someone’s home: Leave lights on a timer in different rooms and even a radio tuned into a station with more talking than music. Leave a car in the driveway, either yours (locked) or ask a neighbor to park there. Don’t broadcast your plans online: Don’t post your nights out/trips away on social media until after you return (and make sure your kids don’t either!) Home security systems: Burglar alarms and CCTV in obvious places will deter many burglars.

Protect your valuables: Lock up the most important things in a safe including documents that could be used for identity theft. Split items around several hard-to-reach places. Avoid obvious hiding places such as your sock drawer! Outside the home: Lock gates with high security anti-cut weatherproof padlocks. Install sensor lights at the front, side and rear of your home. Have constant lighting controlled by a dusk to dawn switch. Fit lights at least 2.5 metres high out of reach. Garages & Sheds: Often an easy target, plus they contain a ready source of tools for breaking in, so get a good quality hasp and staple lock with a padlock. Fit a battery or mains powered shed alarm. Lock tools and ladders in shed, or secure ladders to a wall. Lock bikes with a D-lock and secure to an anchor point in shed or garage if possible. Visibly mark your property.

URBAN STAGE IS HAVING A

TIME

“I know the power of drama and music. I know it makes us better human beings. I know how much it has meant to me.” Patron Imelda Staunton CBE Urban Stage School of Performing Arts was founded in 2003 by professional actors Simeon Truby and Helen Kay. Simeon recently joined the cast of WICKED at the Apollo Victoria in London’s West End. He is currently playing Doctor Dillamond and first cover of the Wizard. If that wasn’t exciting enough for US, ex-student Rebecca Gilliland also joined the cast at the same time. Rebecca is first cover Elphaba and part of the fabulous ensemble. “Making theatre with young creatives at Urban Stage is an honour, but then it is always very exciting when a student becomes a professional and we get to work alongside each other, and to be performing together on a show like WICKED is fantastic. Rebecca and I are really looking forward to the Urban Stage theatre trip planned for February. That will be a very very special performance.”

WINS AWARD AT THE HOUSE OF LORDS THE NAZ

BANGLADESHI RESTUARANT OF THE YEAR!

The Naz in Monton has won the the prestigious award of “North West Bangladeshi Restaurant of the Year” at the National Curry Awards (NCA) held in September 2019 in the House of Lords. It is a fantastic achievement having also been voted “Best Bangladeshi Restaurant” at the Asian Restaurant Awards in 2018. The National Curry Awards (NCA) recognise outstanding chefs and successful restaurants and food businesses across the UK. The inaugural ceremony took place on Monday 2nd September and was attended by politicians and celebrities, along with staff and restaurant owners from establishments across the country, who gathered in London to hear the winners announced. "The Asian catering industry is worth an estimated £5billion to the UK economy, but in recent years has witnessed a worrying decline, largely attributed to a shortage of skilled workers and lack of investment in training", state the Awards' organisers. "The NCA was launched to address these concerns and aims to positively promote the industry by highlighting the sector's success stories and its wider contribution to UK culture."

The Monton restaurant has achieved a 4.2 star rating out of 5 on Google. Serving authentic Indian and Bangladeshi traditional dishes plus specialities like ‘Taste of Shundorbon; chicken or lamb tikka strips cooked with onions, peppers, garlic, chillies and garam masala, and ’Bhindi Ghosht’; lamb cooked with fresh okra, onions, tomatoes, garlic and a blend of chef's spices, garnished with fresh coriander. “These curry heroes are making a positive impact in their local communities and showcasing their success will hopefully inspire a new generation to join the industry, securing its future for curry lovers across the UK for many more years to come", state the Awards' organisers. Photo: Mr William Wragg MP (first from the left) is presenting the award to owner Mr Abdul Mannan (centre).

GET READY FOR WINTER by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

Here are a few things we have done to prepare for the winter season... We let the rhubarb die back and rest until spring. It’s weeded and raked, ready for chicken manure in the New Year. Our potato, pea and onion patches have all had the same treatment so that the weather can hopefully kill any slugs, snails or other infestations. We planted an Avocado and a Plum stone to see if they would ‘take’ and they have! Being young, they are now in the polytunnel to help them survive frost. Our planters are now living under the gazebo for protection against the rain and some of the cold. We particularly want to save the orange scented Geraniums and Begonia.

An unexpected donation of winter onions and garlic have all been either planted in beds or are settling in trays in the polytunnel. All our tools, loose chairs and ‘blowable’ bits have been cleaned and put into storage, just in case gales get started early. A newly donated bunker is very handy for housing miscellaneous items! &$,%%3/!-1(#)!2(+0$.!#'$#)*(/0"

Clean all tools and oil them to avoid rusting. Mulch every plant you can. Prune and cut back your raspberries. Move chillies, peppers or other ‘warm spot’ lovers out of draughts. Lift your precious plants which you think may not survive deep cold or wet. Stake any trees that may suffer wind damage. Prune apple trees once their leaves have fallen. Start reading seed catalogues and look for new seeds and ideas for the new year!
