DISCOVERIES AT WORSLEY DELPH The site of the new viewing platform in the Delph, Worsley. The tunnel entrance can be seen to the left of the digger.

There has been great excitement over recent months as people watch the transformation of Worsley Delph as part of its refurbishment for the Est1761 Project. The bridge parapets have been cleaned and silt has been removed from the basin, but the excitement has been caused by the discovery of two new tunnels and an old winch. It was thought that the area was well recorded and researched and so the new discoveries are a welcome find. The tunnel commences at a previously unrecorded stone quay and is about ten metres long in the direction of the old corn mill (at the bottom of Mill Brow). A smaller second tunnel runs off the main tunnel, and runs south and parallel to the Delph and canal. Both are made from handmade brick and lime mortar. The remains of the winch lie close to the Worsley Road bridge. Local historians John Aldred and Judith Atkinson have investigated the new discoveries, as has Dr. Mike Nevell, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at Salford University. It is suggested that the winch

16 ON OUR DOORSTEP

may have been used to move materials between Worsley Road and the Delph waterway. The larger tunnel is big enough for a horse and cart and this may have been an access route via a tunnel from the quay in the Delph, directly into the cellars of the corn mill. Unfortunately, the tunnels lie behind where the new viewing platform is being constructed and will be hidden by the new structure. Therefore the tunnels have been sealed, so that they might be explored again in the future. The new discoveries will be mentioned in the interpretation panels on the new viewing platform. The work is due to be completed by March 2019. A fuller report on the new Delph discoveries by Dr. Mike Nevell, is to be found in the new Salford Link, which is available in Salford libraries. John Aldred and Judith Atkinson have recorded their thoughts on the Est1761 website: www.est1761.org/delph-discovery-whats-story Written by Paul Hassall

Opened in 1761 the canal played an integral part in the Industrial Revolution after being commissioned by Francis Egerton, the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater to transport coal from his mines at Worsley to Manchester. The £1.3m restoration, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund will enable a wide range of users to enjoy this Scheduled Ancient Monument. The appearance of the site will be sensitively improved at basin level with a new multi-level viewing platform to enhance public access and views across the Delph. In his keynote speech, ACF Chairman Yawar Khan declared the Asian Restaurants Awards a great success and promised to return next year with “an even bigger and better event.” In his programme notes, Asian Restaurant Awards judge, George Shaw, commented: “Over 25 years ago culinary pioneer Madha Jaffrey told me that too many Asian restaurant owners were in a race to the bottom, under cutting each other’s prices, with enormous menus of poorly cooked dishes. Tonight, we celebrate the achievements of those in a race to the top.” Manchester's Deputy Mayor congratulated Mr Mannan, owner of The Naz, and his family on his success. GETTING YOUR MARKETING RIGHT FOR 2019! Digital or Print? What makes a good marketing strategy? Louise Adkin, local mummy and owner of Angel Media gives us some insights into both the NEW and the TRADITIONAL methods and why a mix of marketing platforms is required to create a successful strategy and ROI for your business. After many years working for corporate companies such as Time Warner and BBC my son popped into the world and I wanted to ensure I could spend quality time with him. Living in Worsley I connected with Susie at On Our Doorstep and we have worked together on the growth of On Our Doorstep and Live It Local for the last 8 years. Angel Media has developed further into a Boutique Digital Marketing Agency, working with many businesses including The Manchester Chamber of Commerce and The Derwent Group.

Digital Marketing – What is it? Social Media Marketing Content Marketing: Creative, blogging, video Website Design: Design & SEO SEO & PP: Boost traffic to your website Email Marketing: Talk directly to your database Mobile Marketing: Appealing to mobile device users.

Why is it so important? Here are some insights into internet usage in 2018 from authoritative industry studies: 66% of the UK population are active social media users. 82% of consumer internet traffic will be video by 2021. A quarter of media consumption to be mobile in 2018. Content with relevant images gets 94% more views. 75% of marketing budgets will go to Digital in 2018. Organic search is the most valuable marketing channel, making search engine optimization critical. 86% of women will check social media before making a purchase. Better content can drive traffic to a blog by up to 2000%. Two seconds is all companies get when it comes to website load time. Anything longer increases bounce rates by 50%. 91% of retail brands use 2 or more social media channels. This is where Angel Media comes in, to look at the digital element of your business from a marketing perspective to advise, run your digital marketing, provide monthly reports and ensure any investment sees a return. We will connect your business with your audience in the right place and at the right time. 24 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Print Still Has Power! Print is a well-established proven medium with a long, successful track record. In a recent survey 36% said they would spend up to 30 mins reading a print magazine, compared to only 18% who would spend that long reading a digital magazine. (Freeport Press 2018). With the speed of digital media print provides a safe, calm haven where you can read at leisure. Print is a trusted medium, in a digital world full of fake news and the fact that stories can be released and deleted within hours on digital platforms print has that traditional feel of being genuine, written by professionals and researched. We know with On Our Doorstep that our readers keep their copies and refer back to them, they feel they can contact us with questions or queries too. For every 100 unaddressed door drops received, 10 are passed on and shared and each piece is revisited three times. On average, 51% of all mail is read immediately, whether addressed or not, with a further 19% eventually followed up on (source: DMA and JICMail). If you have any questions on marketing your business please contact me directly via email at louise@angelmediauk.co.uk www.angelmediauk.co.uk

HELP US REACH OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY THE 2MMS JUNIOR YOUTH CLUB EST 1970

2MMs is a Junior Youth Club based in Winton, providing a place for 8 to11 year olds to meet on a Friday night, socialise and play games such as table tennis and pool. We also organise special events and parties for the children, and this summer we held a family funday at Monton AFC with the help of Worsley Rotary. Founded in 1970, we are now celebrating 48 years. It’s a great achievement, especially as the club is run by volunteers who generously give their time for free and we are self-funding. We are determined to reach our 50th Anniversary in 2020 and desperately need funds to keep the club open - for rent, bills and to replace equipment which is in poor condition. Geoff Grieves is now 86; he started the 2mms as he saw a need for activities for the children of Eccles and the surrounding area. With two friends, Don Catteral and Tony Peach (former Editor of the Eccles & Patricroft Journal), and with their own money, they opened on Friday 11th September 1970.

26 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Geoff still attends every Friday at the age of 86, even through ill health and two new knees! We want to ensure the club’s survival for the 35 to 45 youngsters we take off the streets on a Friday night, so are appealing to our local community for support. If you could donate the price of a couple of coffees or a burger or two, your kindness would be really appreciated. You can email us for more information, or send your donations via Paypal to 2mms@mail.com 2mms Junior Youth Club Est 1970 2mms Junior Youth Club, Fridays 7.00-9.00pm Alder Brook School, Walnut Road, Westwood Park,Eccles, M30 8LE

THE GALLERY

Celebrating 10 Years 2019 is a special year for The Gallery because we’ll be 10 years old !

Painting of The Gallery by Julie Porter

The brainchild of the late Karen Illingworth, The Gallery began as a temporary space to exhibit the work of Swinton Art Club - and we’re still here!”

the next, our first exhibition of 2019 will be “Out of the Attic”. We’re asking artists to submit a picture which maybe they painted years ago and have had stored in the attic since... or perhaps a new piece of work depicting something you might find in the attic.

Over ten years we’ve exhibited the work of local artists, been a springboard for aspiring new ones, provided affordable exhibition space for artists, crafters, schools, art groups - and now host our own Friday Art Club where you can turn up, paint or draw and, from time to time, learn from visiting artists. We recently organised an arts fair in the shopping centre combining art, craft, theatre and music, as part of Eccles Festival. Despite the weather it was a great success and will only get bigger next year! To celebrate our past ten years and to welcome in

We’re also re-launching our Open Membership Scheme where artists and members of the public can donate a small amount of money annually, towards ensuring that this 'not-for-profit' organisation continues to flourish. Ten years on... thank you Karen for your inspiration and many thanks, as always, to our team of volunteers, without whom the Gallery wouldn’t still exist !
