School Enrolling 1,000th Child Clarendon Cottage Preparatory School is close to enrolling its 1,000th pupil since it first opened its doors over 20 years ago. The nursery (still on Clarendon Road, Eccles) was established in 1989, with the belief that every child deserves a first rate education. With that aim in mind they offered a unique day care experience that gave children the opportunity to learn early writing, reading and maths in a well-structured, safe, caring and fun environment. In 1991, the original nursery children had grown and the school was born, with one class of mixed infants housed above the nursery. In 1994, after a devastating fire in the church hall the school had relocated to, everyone moved to an extension of a local nursing home, owned by some parents at the school. This parental dedication and involvement has been a key characteristic of the school, and head teacher Emma Howard believes that strong relationships between home and school are still key, “children will always progress

further, when the home and school work hand in hand”. In 1995, the school bought ‘Hyde Lodge’, and reverted back to its original name ‘Ivy Bank House’. Extensions to the building have enabled the school to expand further with children now attending from the age of 3 to 11 years. The school’s latest Inspection report was rated as ‘Outstanding/Excellent’- the highest ranking possible. Their recent membership into the Independent Schools Association assures quality and academic excellence. The school has a broad curriculum, all year round care, trips and visits and high standards of discipline. Together with exceptional exam results, high acceptance rates into Independent Senior Schools and regularly ranked in the top 100 national Prep Schools in terms of SATs results, it’s easy to see why! Keeping Business Local ...in Monton Village In the second of our “Keeping Business Local” features, we focus on Monton Village. As busy people who work and have families, it’s rare we have the luxury of time to explore our local village centres. So our aim is to help make residents aware of how much is available “on our doorstep” from our smaller, independent retailers, before heading off to the large shopping centres and supermarkets. Monton is a busy, vibrant village with a modern twist brought about by the individual boutiques, bistro’s, restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and small independents along Monton Road. Like many other villages, Monton has suffered with the downturn in economy, but more uniquely, it has also battled with the local FREE car park being converted to Pay & Display. This has now partly been resolved with a half hour free parking allowance set in place by Salford Council. Many of the shop owners will advise customers of other parking options if you want to stay a little longer!

12 ON OUR DOORSTEP

The longest established boutique Fabric, owned by Leigh James and finalist in Drapers Fashion Retailer of 2012, has held firm through the tough times and her advice to other local businesses is to ensure you have “a strong identity and the integrity to knuckle down and work harder when times get tough. Don’t be intimidated by the high street shops but ensure a strong work ethic and open to suit your customers”. Lady V, Adele’s Bag Heaven and Monton Designer Jewellery are amongst other options for clothes and accessories in Monton. For personal grooming and pampering, several hair salons and beauty parlours line Monton Road, including Twisted Elegance, No 31, Blink Beauty, Beautique, The Powder Room, TH Nails, Village Nails, plus The Academy Trade store that specialises in beauty training. After a wander around the shops or a walk along the loop line, take a break at one of the cafes or delis. Options include The Coffee House, Ivy Deli, Playfoots and Selo Deli. For kids there’s

Louis’ Ice Cream Parlour, open whatever the weather! If you prefer a traditional pub, there are several, all offering slightly different atmospheres to regulars and visitors alike. For lunch or dinner, you are spoilt for choice with an array of restaurants and take aways, including Leo’s Pizzeria, Blacksticks, Felicini’s, Passage To India, Nani, and Crompton’s at The Waterside overlooking the canal. The diversity of what Monton has to offer is highlighted with Loulabelles the florist, a choice of grocery shops, an off-license and Celebrations and Cake Creations. With these to hand you have all you need to throw a great party! You will also find a spectrum of professional services such as Smiths Opticians, Bridgfords Funerals, On The Green Interior Designers, Chiropodists, Physiotherapists, Chemists, Vets and even Yoga and Pilates run by Sadhana Ali. Underlying Monton, there is a strong sense of community. At Christmas and summer the residents and local businesses get together to

host a fantastic Christmas Light Switch On and Fair, plus the Monton Summer Festival where local businesses line the streets with stalls selling food, gifts, fashion, jewellery etc... Events are organised by the Monton Village Community Association (MCVA), who also work closely with the council to make Monton a clean and thriving place to live and work. City West Housing Trust has just launched their 'Love Fruit and Veg' scheme in Monton, which provides fresh produce at affordable prices to the community. Sourced in the North West, costs are kept low and customers collect their orders from Ivy Deli - a great example of using local suppliers and supporting local business! Hopefully, you now have an insight into the wide range of services available in Monton, and will be inspired to take a trip down there soon and discover for yourself what is fully on offer. GET THE LOOK THIS PARTY SEASON The Festive Party season has begun ! Preparing for your Christmas or New Year party can be a mammoth task, but also a lot of fun. It is no longer a case of just buying an outfit and doing your make-up, but a whole host of preparations from facials, teeth whitening and tanning, to hair styling, nails and make-up! If you are looking for inspiration for this season’s party events, we have teamed up with local experts to show you some key trends for 2012!

Trends and Tips

Sparkling Eyes

MAKE-UP Forget the natural look and say no to those nude shades. The party season is all about daring to have fun with colour and flair. Create a dramatic and eye-catching effect! n For the eyes, the secret to wearing bright colours is in the blending. Add colour gradually to build intensity, and blend using a soft brush between applications. Or, try taking a basic grey eye shadow and infuse it with flecks of gold, purple or green, but contain it between the lid and the crease. n Add some shimmer to create a beautiful glow - sweep glittering powder over your cheekbones, below your brow bone and on the inner corner of your eyes (pink based highlighter for light skin, golden tones for darker skin). n Black liner swept across the top lid makes a bold yet elegant statement that needs little else. n Lips should be striking. Try deep red or burgundy (for darker skins) or cooler reds (for pale skins).

by Blink Beauty, Monton Add some extra sparkle to your night! Blink Beauty suggests a full face make-up application including colour blend on the eyes. Here, gold dust and warm parfait colours are used with a sheer black liner over the lid. Semi-permanent individual eyelash extensions create an eye-catching effect, plus jewels add that extra special touch! These are optional but can be quite the thing this festive season! At Blink Beauty, make-up application starts from £20, and a full set of lashes are £35. See below for their special festive package!

PARTY HAIR Beautiful glossy hair is a must if you want your hair to look healthy and groomed. n Up-dos are the ultimate makeover for the party season. Choose a sleek and stylish classic up-do or a looser tousled one. n The ponytail is having a high fashion moment this season too! FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

Fra me Your Face by La Bonita Beauty, Ellenbrook Brows & Eyelashes! Eyebrows are very important features. They help define bone structure and provide a natural frame for the face. Having shapely brows is essential if you want to achieve a more sculpted and youthful look. Tinting the eyelashes will enhance and define the eyes and avoids the need for mascara! La Bonita recommends their “Eye Trio” package consisting of:- Eyebrow Shape, Eyebrow Tint and Eyelash Tint or extensions. Eyebrows are given definition, by using tint, waxing and tweezing. Eyelashes are tinted creating a thicker and longer appearance, or eyelash extensions are available. The treatment takes only 20 minutes, but last for weeks. Eyelash extensions may last for less, depending on how they are cared for. The “Eye Trio” costs just £18.

Party Nails by The Nail Studio Festive and Fun! Nails are now a must to complete the look. Award-winning “The Nail Studio” present two unique designs:A perfect Acrylic nail for that Little Black Dress. Vintage Hair-Up Style by No.31 Salon, Monton ‘Tis the party season and that means big hair and party dresses. Vintage style hair-ups are very current and here at No.31 Salon we specialise in big party hair. The vertical roll dates back to the 1940's and is usually worn at the back of the head. Here is our step by step guide to create your own festive look:1. Prep the hair by drying mousse into it 2. Back comb the hair at the roots 3. Brush and smooth the hair over to one side at the back 4. Criss cross kirby grips up the head from the nape to the crown securing the hair to one side 5. Turn the loose hair up and around ensuring it covers all the grips 6. Secure your roll with grips 7. This is a classic look. The roll should sit tight to the head shape. You can decorate this or change the fringe section. No.31 salon is offering hair-ups and blow dries for £15 during the Christmas period. We have a very relaxed atmosphere with huge swept mirrors on bare brick walls overlooking Monton Green. Swimming Franchise Puddle Ducks Celebrates 10 years with a Rebrand Launched in 2002 by friends and new mums, Tracy Townend and Jo Stone, Puddle Ducks was one of the first baby swimming companies in the UK – a time when baby swimming was a fairly new concept. Having enjoyed significant success growing the business across Cheshire, they franchised Puddle Ducks in 2007, with a network now covering 40 territories across the UK and teaching over 5,000 children a week. To mark the achievement, Puddle Ducks has undergone a total rebrand, which sees the main character, Puddle the Duck, grow up a little, and we also meet his other family members. “We really wanted the new design to capture the welcoming, fun, fresh and nurturing family environment that we have carefully created over the last decade, with a little nod to the aquatic world,” said Tracy.

Jo added, “We’re so proud of Puddle Ducks and all that our franchisees and teachers have helped us achieve. Ten years have flown by and we feel incredibly honoured that both the quality of our classes and franchise offering are recognised as market-leading.” Puddle Ducks offers swimming lessons from aquanatal classes to children 10 years of age, taught by carefully selected and highly trained, welcoming teachers who know how to get the very best out of every individual. Jo Gribben runs the East Lancs franchise and runs local classes at:• Worsley Marriott Hotel • Springwood Primary School, Swinton • Bodywise Health Club, Farnworth Jo Gribben - local franchisee

Svelte Body:

the 1st and most established clinic in the area. Achieving fantastic results for our clients!

Testimonials from some of our very happy clients... SANDRA - STOMACH & WAIST I am a good size ten with stubborn fat around my stomach and waist area. After trying many other ways to reduce the stubborn fat on my stomach and waist, I booked a course of 8 treatments with Svelte Body. After the 3rd treatment I could notice a considerable difference when I looked in the mirror and the skirts and trousers that I struggled to get on became much easier to zip up and close! I found the treatment relaxing, quick and easy and couldn't wait for the next session because I knew it was working. I would say that I have lost between one and two dress sizes over the 8 treatments and am very pleased with the results !!!

MARK - CHEST AREA A very nice and friendly atmosphere and completely private. The therapists were very pleasant and made me feel at ease. I never felt any embarrassment or awkwardness. At my first session the belt would not close properly around my chest area. After session number two this was no longer a problem and I could physically see the difference in my clothes. Am really pleased with the results and would highly recommend. Don't be shy or embarrassed just go for it. I just wish I knew about Svelte Body a lot sooner !!!!

SUSAN - TUMMY I have loved coming every week. I have lost 18.1 inches in 3 and a half weeks and 9 1/4 pounds which I am delighted about. I will come again if needed. Great staff and flexible hours. Thank you Svelte Body!!

DAVID -TUMMY AND CHEST AREA Money well spent. First class treatment. Lost inches everywhere. Well looked after. Anybody wishing to loose inches try it, it works. Thank you!!

Health & Fitness

Lose Weight & Get Fit! ...the top New Year’s Resolutions every year! Without fail, every year the Top 3 New Year’s Resolutions include “losing weight” and “getting fit”. Research shows that most people will give up their Resolutions just nine days after they were made. I’m not sure I even last nine days! So if you are like me, these tips may help you stick to them a bit longer and achieve some results! Top tips:

1. Set Realistic Goals. Lose 12 pounds a week. Eat healthier but make small changes to your diet at a time. 2. Get Support from family & friends. Share your goals and ask them to protect you from potential setbacks ie. don’t leave junk food around the house! 3. Ease Into Exercise take breaks & walks with friends. Aim for 30 mins 23 times a week and build it up. 4. Prioritise Your Health. Balance it with your busy lifestyle. Make time to exercise, plan out your meals, have less takeaways & choose healthily in restaurants.

Fantastic Facilities On Our Doorstep! To get fit, look no further than your local area. There’s a whole host of classes and facilities available. 1. Do It For Free - what about walking, running or cycling in the fantastic woods, along the loopline or local parks. Take your kids and have some energetic fun on a regular basis, or just play in the park together. It’s a great way to instill a healthier lifestyle and they

will appreciate that family time. Salford Health Improvement Team run organised classes and activities for children, adults and families. 2. Pay As You Go - Check out local community centres, church halls, Fit City and schools for a multitude of classes to suit all people and ages. From something leisurely, like swimming, yoga, pilates or even Tea Dances, to the more energetic dance/ Zumba classes. Learn a skill or take up a hobby such as Martial Arts or Dancing. The advantage being, you can vary your exercise regime and change it if you don’t like it! 3. Regular Commitment - You may be suited to something more structured like a gym or personal trainer. Choose to suit your budget. Local facilties include the Marriott, Total Fitness, Fit City, Ladies Gym, MU Personal Fitness, or even PT online! 4. Slimming Classes - We are blessed with an array of diet and fitness clubs such as Rosemary Conley, Slimming World, and Community Wellness Challenge at MU Fitness. So, now you have the tools, you just need the will and the motivation. Ditch the excuses in 2013 and let’s see if we can make our resolutions last a lot longer than 9 days!

The Earls of Ellesmere - Part 2

THE GREAT EARLS On the death of the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater (the "Canal Duke") in 1803, the Dukedom and his other titles became extinct. Unmarried and with no direct heir, his immense wealth however, remained Francis Egerton (17361803) 3rd Duke of Bridgewater safe within the family. The Duke had formed the “Bridgewater Trust” which made his nephew, the Marquess of Stafford, the Beneficiary and after him the Marquess’s second son, Lord Francis Leveson-Gower, on the condition that Lord Francis changed his surname to Egerton. So whilst Lord Francis's elder brother went on to be the Duke of Sutherland, Lord Francis did not do too badly himself. The fate of younger sons was usually the Church or the Army. This one became the beneficiary of a great fortune! So it was that the Egertons returned to Worsley, to resume an association that had existed for almost 300 years. THE 1ST EARL - LORD FRANCIS EGERTON Lord Francis, born in 1800 came into his inheritance in 1833 and proved to be a great rarity for his time - an aristocrat with a social conscience! He had entered Parliament in 1822 (only 22 years old!) and later Francis Egerton (18001857) occupied a number of 1st Earl of Ellesmere senior positions. He became Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1828 and was one of the champions of Catholic Emancipation in 1829. He supported Free Trade years before it was legislated and also the founding of London University to provide educational opportunity to a much wider spectrum of the population. In 1835, he brought his family to Worsley, which had become a blighted mining and industrial area with an impoverished population. Very few aristocrats would have chosen to live in such a place but Lord Francis's family intended to live 36 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Worsley New Hall built in the 1840’s.

"In the midst of their duties and responsibilities". He and his wife Harriet set about those responsibilities with typical Victorian zeal. Harnessing his wealth he began building. Firstly, the family home, the magnificent New Hall designed by famous architect Edward Blore, was built close to the old Duke’s "Brick Hall" (demolished 1845), in Middlewood. Its gardens, terraced with fountains and fashionable formal "parterre" flower designs, created by William Nesfield, descended to a lake with an island and "grotto". The New Hall itself was in the Tudor style, four stories high and covering a wide area. It contained many gracious rooms and its grandeur later attracted visits from Queen Victoria, King Edward Vll, Benjamin Disraeli and the Duke of Wellington. The Egertons did not neglect their workers, tenants and the local population. To address their spiritual needs they built and endowed St. Marks Church in Worsley and St. Pauls in Walkden, together with their associated schools. They banned the employment of women and children in the coal mines, established a Domestic Servants School for women, opened a Medical Dispensary and a Reading Room. They introduced night-school classes for the estate workers and, a startling innovation, a non-contributory pension scheme. St Mary's Park was built as a recreational facility for the population. Lord Francis was elevated to the Peerage in 1846 with the revived titles of 1st Earl of Ellesmere

and Viscount Brackley and served as MP for South Lancashire from 1835-46. His talents seemed endless. He was also notable in literature, writing poetry, contributing journalistic articles and even producing illustrations for Lady

Ellesmere's "Journal of a Tour to the Holy Land”. He translated French and German plays, romances and histories and even found time to be President of the Royal Geographical Society, Rector of Aberdeen University, Trustee of the National Gallery, President of the Royal Asiatic Society! This enlightened man died in 1857 at Bridgewater House in London, but was returned to Worsley for burial at St Marks, the church that he founded. Many monuments were built in his memory. The official one, a 132ft spire, was erected on Leigh Road, where it towered above the trees for many years. Now reduced in stature, it is enclosed in the back garden of a house. He commissioned his shooting lodge the "Aviary" in Worsley Woods, the “The Old Nick” and Worsley Courthouse. Lady Harriet, who passed away in 1866, also has her memorial, the "Eleanor" Cross in Walkden. Both official memorials were paid for by a grateful public subscription. SUBSEQUENT EARLS:2nd Earl: George Egerton (1857-1862) Lord Francis and Lady Harriet had eleven children. Their first son George Egerton became the 2nd Earl, but survived his father by only 5 years. 3rd Earl: Francis Egerton (1862-1914) George’s eldest son Francis inherited his title at the young age of 15. Francis was a soldier. He served in the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry, the 40th Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corps and became Honorary Colonel of the Manchester Regiment in 1891. During his time as Earl, the Bridgewater Trust expired in 1903 and the Egertons were no longer Beneficiaries of a trust but owners of all they surveyed. Already the famous canal of the Duke had been sold, now much more began to go. The New Hall was seldom used, the last family visit was in 1913. It’s maintenance began to suffer and the famous gardens were neglected.

4th Earl: John Egerton (1914-1944) The 3rd Earl died in 1914 and was succeeded by John his eldest son. In the same year the Hall was offered for use as a hospital for wounded officers from the Great War and the family never returned thereafter. Instead, in 1920, the Hall was stripped of all its finery; Soldiers on the terrace garden at Worsley Hall Red Cross Hospital in 1921 all its residual furniture was sold and it was seriously considered for demolition. A final profit was squeezed from the ancestral coal mines which had built the family fortune. A column of coal seam lay beneath the New Hall, which had been left to support the building. Most of it was extracted but the Hall remained intact. How the old Duke and his nephew must have turned in their graves! The Hall survived, empty and desolate, until World War II when it again served as a billet for soldiers, this time Americans. However, in 1947 a fire took place and the owners, Bridgewater Estates, decided on complete demolition. It was razed to ground level for a mere £2,000. The once beautiful gardens, their terrace retaining walls removed, surrendered to Nature and the rampant growth of a virtual jungle. And what became of the Earls? 5th Earl: John Sutherland Egerton (1944-2000) In 1944, the 4th Earl was succeeded by his son, John Sutherland Egerton as the 5th Earl. In 1963, his distant relative the Duke of Sutherland died and he succeeded to the Title as 6th Duke also. In 2000 he died, again leaving no direct heir, but again the extended family came to the rescue. 6th Earl: Francis Ronald Egerton (2000 to date) Francis was the great great grandson of the benevolent 1st Earl. He succeeded as 7th Duke and 6th Earl of Ellesmere. In 2009 he appeared in the "Sunday Times Rich List" as 107th wealthiest person in Britain. His fortune, an estimated £480m in art and land. The bulk of that descended from the old Duke of Bridgewater; from the "black gold" dug from the earth of Worsley and carried on his Canal and the great works of art that he so wisely bought with his profits...
