School’s out and the summer holidays are here! It’s a welcome break from home schooling and online lessons, but it’ll be a very different summer for us all. Stepping Back in Time

Local villages are coming back to life with shops, cafes, bars and salons now open. This issue we focus on Boothstown and Monton, looking at how independent traders have coped in lockdown and are now striving to ‘bounce back’. These businesses make our villages unique and recovery will be a slow process, so let’s support them as much as we can and help them to thrive again. We have dedicated several spaces to promote local charities which have all been heavily impacted by the lack of fundraising. They need our help now more than ever. Please take time to read their articles and support them if you can.

THE POWER OF DRAMA AND MUSIC

“I know the power of drama and music. I know it makes us better human beings. I know how much it has meant to me.” Patron Imelda Staunton CBE

Urban Stage students should have been performing their summer productions of ‘THE LION, THE WITCH & THE WARDROBE’ and ‘THE LITTLE MERMAID’, but like so many we have had to adapt ensuring we continue to support our students, parents and staff. We are delighted to say that we have achieved just that with our usual face to face youth theatres turning to online sessions. Students have also been working towards a DRAMA CUP competition with 1:1 mentoring from industry professionals culminating in an awards ceremony. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone

who has continued to support US and in doing so supported the arts. We look forward to seeing so many of our Athalia Pickford from An Inspector Calls current and welcoming new students in the autumn term. THANK YOU to our staff, our students and our parents who have been juggling work and home schooling. THANK YOU to our patron, the superb actress Imelda Staunton who has sent messages of support to our Urban Stage family. Urban Stage has been challenged, but we are still here in the community nurturing and developing our young people’s unique potential. To find out more contact Helen on 0161 211 9955 or 07969 509159

Why Bridgewater School’s individual approach could make it the perfect choice for your child’s future Back to School

The events of recent months have changed the lives of everyone and, no matter how old we are, even small changes to our routine can make us feel anxious. It is no surprise then, that our youngest children, who are preparing for the steps ahead and embarking on a journey of learning that will last for years, may feel utterly overwhelmed. Patrice Pritchard, Head of Early Years at Bridgewater School in Worsley says “Research suggests that transitions are central to young children’s development and emotional wellbeing and the way in which they are handled could have a significant impact on the child’s capacity to cope with change in the future. This is why the principles of a wellplanned transition are embedded in Bridgewater’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and continue throughout Key Stages 1 and 2.” She continues “If a school gets early transition right, then they will reap the benefits for years to come with children deeply engaged in their learning. Pupils at Bridgewater School have the same positive transition in Years 6 to 7 when they continue their journey into Senior School, with the

distinct areas of our school blending seamlessly into our very special Bridgewater family.” At Bridgewater School, whose family ethos is built into its foundations, they recognise the importance of a successful transition from home to school and this understanding is reflected in their nurturing and supportive approach. The focus for lockdown has therefore been directed towards making it as easy as possible for pupils to rejoin their vibrant school community when they return in September. In addition to virtual lessons with class teachers, pupils have attended virtual assemblies where individuals’ achievements, both in and beyond the ‘classroom’, have continued to be celebrated, have seen their ideas and personal journeys shared with the wider school community and been provided with inspiration and guidance to help their mental wellbeing. The school’s established ‘open door’ policy, which encourages openness and transparency, has proved vital in this period of distance learning, ensuring a continuing partnership between school and home. This mutually rewarding partnership is one which has reaped spectacularly pleasing rewards for pupils and parents over successive generations and all involved share a real sense of optimism about the future, whatever it may hold.

Many families must cut back on day to day basics or get into debt to be able to afford the costs of uniform and other kit to send their children back to school, and for many families now is a particularly difficult time. Our SmartStart project provides free school uniform packs to Manchester and Salford children and families experiencing hardship, to help alleviate pressure on struggling families. Uniform is available for children age 4-16. Families who are registered with us can now go online and order their uniform from our website and have it delivered directly to their door to get ready for the return to school in September. If you think you may need help through the SmartStart project, or you know a family who needs support, please visit our website for details on how to apply. We only have a limited supply of items and we encourage families to apply as soon as possible. All our services are free to access. To be able to provide this support, we rely very much on the generosity of the local community. If you can help with a financial donation, please head to www.woodstreetmission.org.uk/support-us/donate-money. Your support can help a child fit in and achieve at school this year.

Georgia’s Children of the World

G-FEST HITS THE STREETS! Lockdown brought a major headache to Georgia’s Children of the World as it did for so many of us... G-Festival was cancelled and fundraising prospects were bleak, putting our projects at home and overseas at serious risk. But with some quick thinking and the amazing support of our community once we again we raised over £15,000 in just 6 weeks, starting with our ‘DONOWT DONATE’ campaign on social media, hand made greeting cards by Anna Goddard, Doorstep Photography by Kirstine Doherty, climaxing with ‘G-FEST HITS THE STREETS’ supported by Party Trike, Education Matters and sponsored by Morson Group. It was a glorious Bank Holiday Monday in May and our whole community joined in with their ‘own personal G-Fests’ in their gardens and on the streets, as we took G-Fest to the people of Worsley, Swinton, Monton and Winton, with LIVE music, DJ sets, super heroes and Disney characters. It was an amazing fundraising effort that has enabled Georgia’s Children to maintain ALL our projects, as many are education based the financial demand on us was a little less due to the global lockdown, which enabled us to divert some funds into essential feeding programs. We are also expecting a huge demand on our free school uniform project for Salford as we look to get our kids back to school in September and thanks to our amazing community we have funds in place to hopefully deal with the demand. We will also continue to support our very own Heidi Lou, who loved ‘G-Fest Hits the Streets’ as we stopped to share a special LIVE song with her outside her house. Once social distancing rules are relaxed we will back to providing her life changing essential physiotherapy sessions.

D

In November it will be 10 years since we lost my daughter Georgia, but her legacy has gone on to to help hundreds and hundreds of children, thanks to you, our amazing community!

“A big decision, but could be the best you ever make” Despite the very uncertain times of 2020, at Adoption Counts we have been working hard for potential adopters and children. We have adapted quickly to the challenges posed by the Coronavirus pandemic and we are still very much open and welcoming enquiries from anybody who is considering adoption. We have been running virtual information events since the start of lockdown, so that we can help you get all the advice and information you need to make this life changing decision. We’re also proud to say that through virtual adoption panels, we have approved adopters throughout the lockdown period. What is adoption? Adoption is life changing. You become the legal parent of a child who cannot - for whatever reason - live with their birth parents. Your child will become a member of your family for life. Who can adopt? Adopters come from all walks of life. There is no upper age limit for adoption, although you need to be over 21. You need to be able to look after a child until they become an adult and ideally be there to support them beyond this point. You can be gay, heterosexual, single, in a civil partnership, married or co-habiting - all applications are very welcome and treated equally at Adoption Counts. You can adopt whether you rent or own your own

home, as long as you have stable living arrangements and the space to accommodate a child. At Adoption Counts, we work hard to be able to create new families and witness the start of strong, life-long relationships between adoptive parents and children. That is why, now more than ever, we need families to come forward as adopters to make sure that we can meet all of our children’s needs and do our best by them. We welcome enquiries from all communities and we are particularly keen to hear from people of a BME background, in particular from the Black African and Black Caribbean communities. This year marks our 3rd year anniversary - it was in July 2017 when we brought together the professional expertise and specialist skills of five local authorities from across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, to deliver adoption services of the highest quality. Hopes, fears, needs: we are here to listen intently and respond sensitively to them all. Adoption is a big decision, but it could be the best you ever make. T: 0300 123 2676

Community News

Daughters of Salford, set up by women who call Salford home, launched Salford Baby Bank, our first project to bring hope and help to those families who are most vulnerable in this area. Some of our trustees are University of Salford Alumni who are using their skills to give back to the community. With the event of Covid-19 the launch was brought forward with the aim of providing the most basic essentials to families who are struggling in the crisis. We are committed to establishing a trusted resource for NHS & other professionals who work front line with families and help alleviate frustration as resources are so stretched and provision is often difficult to secure in a short space of time. The crisis has impacted all our lives but in the transition to parenthood, the isolation from not seeing family and friends can be trickier for some families.

If you are unable to connect and get hands on help from friends and family, it can feel overwhelming with a new baby or little ones and we are also mindful of those families who experience bereavement at this time. Salford Baby Bank is a long-term project which will continue whilst the need is there. Ultimately, our vision is to create a health and wellbeing platform to provide services and support to help families achieve their hopes and aspirations. We are a progressive and passionate team who are committed to Salford City and its families. If you can help, please donate to our wish list and stewardship, or even small monthly cash donations. www.salfordbabybank.co.uk @Salfordbabybank @SalfordBabyBank

Local Charities

Kidscan: Children’s Cancer Research

HELP US SURVIVE & THRIVE Today four children will be diagnosed with cancer in the UK. Sadly the treatments used are often designed for adults and can cause lasting damage to children’s growing bodies. 60% of survivors will suffer late-effects that can include bone and organ problems, secondary cancers and infertility. Childhood cancer has a lasting impact, and currently Covid19 is making this worse. Pressure on the NHS means patients are facing delays in diagnosis, treatment and support. In addition, many families are facing tough decisions around treatments that will significantly reduce their child’s immune system, putting them at risk. At Kidscan, we believe that not even a pandemic should force a parent to make a decision about treatments, or stop a survivor suffering late-effects from receiving the support they need. Because we believe that better treatments should already be available. We are a Salford based charity solely focussed on childhood cancer research. To date we have funded over 60 research projects, many of which are carried out at The University of Salford. But this research is now at risk. Because of Covid19 we have lost over half of our income, and we expect this to continue.

To find out more or to donate visit: www.kidscan.org.uk

So, we are asking for your support. Please help us to Survive and Thrive this pandemic, so we can help children diagnosed with cancer do the same.

BOOTHSTOWN BUSINESSES Life during lockdown has been tough for most people from one angle or another. For business owners in Boothstown, most of which are family run, it’s inevitably been a worry as to whether we would all ride the storm and once again open the doors of our businesses. For many the pandemic has had a catastrophic impact and it’s hard to imagine ever being the same again. In response, we’ve have had to get creative finding new ways to work, some selling via social media, some offering food and alcohol takeaway services and new experiences such as Mason’s virtual gin tasting. Many at the same time have been doing amazing community services to help look after those in our area. Of note, The Royal Oak provided countless free meals to NHS workers and the vulnerable & elderly and Colin, from Why Not? Café, shaved his head to raise money for local homeless charity The Mustard Tree. All of the businesses here would like to thank the community for all the support they have given us during these testing times - we will be eternally grateful. And now as lockdown measures start to ease, there is hope on the horizon for the businesses of Boothstown. We can’t wait to see customers, old and new, coming through our doors once again and bringing our wonderful community back together!

Colin said, “Describing these last 3 months is hard, all I can say is that we at Why Not? have certainly missed the social side of running a café-bar. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to some normality, live music & most of all some fascinating conversations. Hope you’re excited!” So, even if for now it is with the ‘new norm’ measures that each business has put in place, every Boothstown business needs the support of our fabulous local residents to pick us back up and get us on the road to recovery - from the hairdressers, barbers and dog groomers to bars & eateries and all the shops! These businesses are the heart of the village and all we want is to thrive again and continue to serve our community. Written by Claire Kimmins, Present Trend

During these difficult COVID-19 times, our CAREGivers have continued to deliver care to our Salford Seniors, no fuss, just a professionalism and passion that has been quite incredible to witness.”

Great consideration is taken to carefully match CAREGivers to Clients so that they share common areas of interest and can form an immediate bond.

MONTON: SURVIVING THE LOCKDOWN CHALLENGE! With excitement and anticipation our local amenities are beginning to reopen again here in Monton. Along Monton Road we have seen creative thinking from some of the local businesses that could not have traded during lockdown had they not come up with innovative solutions to keep their businesses afloat. Of course, not every business can function from home. Places such as Urban Village Eatery have continued to trade by supplying local residents with veg boxes. Blacksticks have also continued to trade by compiling fantastic meat packs for our residents to order as well as opening their doors to serve takeaway dinners and drinks. The Monton Florist also kept our residents in supply of flowers once they were able to and have been offering doorstep deliveries over weekends.

As shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and salons are once again open for business we look forward to welcoming local residents back to Monton Village. Support our independent traders and shop local! Monton Village Community Association

At Monton Village Community Association, we have continued to support our groups by sharing what we can to encourage online tuition and participation. We’ve shared classes from Sadhana Yoga and Pilates as well as music classes from Anthem Tuition and The Music Shed to name but a few. We have been so proud of our community and the way that our establishments have thought outside the box to continue to serve the residents that support their trade. Our green spaces have also had increased footfall with Dukes Drive and Worsley Loopline becoming regular routes for the local daily exercise. And finally, thanks to local artist Emma Evans Studio that has brought colour and life into our community when times were a little grey - thanking our key workers in bold and beautiful rainbow colours, we couldn’t be more proud of every single one.

REMEMBER TO SHOP LOCAL! The road to recovery is going to be long, but we can all help by buying locally. Support your local community & business owners. Help our towns & villages thrive! § ON OUR DOORSTEP 23

Dream Doors provide customers a unique alternative to kitchen replacement. While we do offer complete kitchen installations, we’ve made our name through kitchen makeovers, in many cases offering our customers significant savings over other kitchen manufacturers and suppliers. We achieve this by working with each customer individually to build a kitchen that exactly meets their needs. A common misconception is that lower prices mean a cheaper alternative, whereas the products we supply are often vastly superior to our competitors. We achieve this by where possible, retaining existing structures, in some cases only suppling the doors, in others we replace appliances, worktops and floors to achieve the desired finish. In each case we work closely with our customers to find the right balance. Our doors and worktops are made to measure, appliances and sinks come from top name suppliers, combine these and you’ve got the recipe for a kitchen makeover that could

Allotment Update

A BUMPER LOCKDOWN CROP by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

Lockdown has had a surprising affect on allotments. Suddenly, everyone has developed an urge to dig and many have been converted to the ‘green way of life’! Their joy at nature’s bounty and their own achievements is a real pleasure witness. What could be better than picking your first tomato or lifting your own cabbage! On the Cancer Support plot we suffered with the early dry spell but, the warm wet weather has produced some spectacular outside results and the heat in our polytunnel has turned into a huge bonus. Our cast, in order of appearance is: Peas, lots of them and eaten straight off the vine or raw in salads. Gooseberries, red and green, ideal for crumbles.

28 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Gherkins, pickled, ready for salads or chopping up to serve in tartare sauce. Tomatoes, filling out to ripen and included in so many dishes and maybe in some relishes. Broad Beans have been spectacular, they are still filling out their pods, on the vine. Rhubarb, our best crop ever, supplying a range of breakfasts and crumble to enjoy with custard. Padrón Peppers are a wonderful part of any Tapas table with lots of vitamin C. The French Beans are delicious and we are busy freezing our surplus. Our first Patty Pans are ready for slicing and frying, there are many more, just growing quietly, so we will keep feeding them, until they and the various courgettes are ready to harvest. If you are interested in growing your own, get in touch with your local council Allotment Officer.

Worsley Rotary is ‘Unpacking Social Enterprise’ – Back to the Future Too? No, this is not a sequel to a Hollywood blockbuster but a call to action for our community as Worsley Rotary builds on its traditions to engage with a new breed of individuals who abide by the same principles that Rotary has extolled for many years - Service Above Self. Social Enterprise, Social Innovation, Social Entrepreneur and Community Interest Companies are phrases not many fully understand although, as Covid has highlighted, there are community challenges that traditional agencies with diminishing budgets struggle to support. Increasingly Social Entrepreneurs are helping many issues such as food/clothing shortages, domestic abuse, homelessness and child poverty by establishing CICs or Social Enterprises. Worsley Rotary has been steadily establishing partnerships with such groups and works jointly with social enterprises such as The Launch Project, Visit from the Stork, Salford Survivor Project, Step into Action Walkden and Little Hulton and others.

As we look back to the support given to our local community for many years we now look to the future too and recognise having the same visions and purpose of our modern Social Entrepreneurs. We plan to hold an ‘Unpacking Social Enterprise’ event in September, via zoom, bringing together social enterprise leaders, members of Rotary in Worsley and other members of our community who would like to volunteer and help explore ways we can work together. We invite social entrepreneurs, social enterprises and local interested volunteers to join this zoom event and find out how we can work together at a time when our communities need us more than ever! Get in touch if you would like to know more about this exciting event! Tony Clayson, President Rotary in Worsley 2019-21 Email tony.clayson@icloud.com

Francis House: Children’s Hospice

Winton Photographer Captures Happy Lockdown Memories Photo by Lian Cunliffe

Sam

Lian

Lian Cunliffe knows only too well the importance of having positive memories during the most difficult of times. Sales Manager Lian started the Doorstep Portrait project in memory of her best friend Sam, who died from teenage bone cancer aged 16 in 2004. She started photographing family and friends and soon other local Salford families were asking her to take their pictures, they too wanted a keepsake of their own happy memories of time spent at together at home. Lian said: "I invited people to be part of history, I thought rather than charge for the portraits I would ask for donations to Francis House, the children's hospice that brought so much joy to my friend Sam towards the end of her life."

"Sam and I were best friends at school. She was a beautiful girl who lit up the room. Francis House supported her and her family in so many ways. The staff were kind, caring and friendly. When she died, they made a sad time that little bit easier. In these uncertain times, I wanted to do my bit to help as well as cheer people up. When I took the portraits, I encouraged people to wear something colourful and include their pets. It feels great to have captured so many happy memories.” During the project, Lian completed 250 photo shoots and raised £3,620. Francis House is facing a shortfall in income of £250,000 from cancelled fundraising events this year. If you would like to help and to donate, please visit www.francishouse.org.uk/appeal

POLLY THE PIG T

The Cock Hotel, on Walkden Road in Worsley, closed a few months ago and is being re-developed. It dates from the 1650s when it was one of the farms on the Worsley Estate. The farmer Hugh Meanley brewed his own ale and began selling it to travellers. It was said to be named after a stuffed bird which adorned the bar. Boddingtons Brewery built a new building in 1934 and both can be seen on the photograph alongside. (The old Cock closed one day and the new one opened the next). The pub is famous for Polly the Pig, which was noted for drinking beer. It is said that charabanc parties used to visit the pub and buy beer especially for Polly, much to the pleasure of the landlord.

Polly was believed to be the mother of over 200 young and her gravestone, dated 1904, stands in the car park. It is hoped that this local landmark is preserved as part of the development.

ECCLES TOWN HALL

BRINGING OUR EXHIBITION OUTSIDE

Over the lockdown Eccles Town Hall has been unable to hold exhibitions and open its doors to the public. However, this has not deterred Eccles Community Hall Organisations (ECHO), who have taken the opportunity to run a small exhibition in their external Notice Board. Over the last few months, ECHO have displayed historic photos of old transport in Eccles that were originally exhibited in the Hall during last year's Eccles Festival. The photos will be changed each month, so do go along and have a look at them when you are in the town centre! Hopefully events at the town hall will resume later this year. STEPPING BACK IN TIME:

ECCLESIASTICAL CENSUS 1851

St Mark’s Worsley

Roe Green Preaching Room

Worsley Wesleyan Methodist

During Lockdown I saw an advert for Volunteers to help transcribe the 1851 Ecclesiastical Census for the National Archives. This was done along with the Population Census in March 1851 to look at “Spiritual Provision”. I chose to look at Worsley which was then in the District of Barton Upon Irwell. Transcribing might be interesting but Victorian writing is flowery and not easy to decipher at times but this is what I found on our local churches... ST MARK’S CHURCH, WORSLEY

Built 1846, at the expense of the Earl of Ellesmere, claimed to have 650 free seats (some places charged pew rents). The Rector, St. Vincent Beechy, counted 300 adults and 450 children both the morning and afternoon Services. The Church Wardens were named as Samuel Fletcher and Peter Nightingale. ST PAUL’S CHURCH, WALKDEN

Also built 1846 by the Earl of Ellesmere, has a note -In lieu of St George’s which was built and consecrated 1841 but being too small was taken down. It had free seats but also 700 which were charged for. The annual income from these was £140. By my reckoning that is 4/- per pew. Their attendance was given as adults 157 and 195 and children 196 and 198 at the two services. The Minister of St Paul’s, George Whitlock, obviously had a gripe because he adds as a remark, ‘In addition the Vicar of Eccles receives for every Funeral and Baptism 1/-. No fee is recovered by the Minister of Walkden’. WORSLEY WESLEYAN METHODIST

The Church is now closed. The building is on Barton Road, Worsley and was built in 1801. It had 80 adults and 60 children in the morning Service and 150 adults in the evening. A note is added by 34 ON OUR DOORSTEP

Samuel Derbyshire the Steward, ‘Divine Service is held alternate Thursday night ave. attendance 50’. ROE GREEN PREACHING ROOM

This is given as Independent Methodist by the Secretary James Clarke. Here the National Archives had a problem because they failed to have Independent Methodist as a denomination even though they have existed since 1806. I pointed this out to them and the name was added to the drop down menu. They differ from Methodists in that they rejected the idea of a paid ministry. Opened June 1821, says the record, but Roe Green celebrated 200 years in 2008! The earlier date is the arrival of the first Missionaries to Roe Green. The Preaching Room was at the bottom of Lumber Lane in the red brick house now known as Littlewood and Sisley Cottages. It had 40 and 50 adults in the services and 60 and 50 scholars. The present building dates from the 1880’s. One sign of the times is a note - ‘Other meetings are held to promote abstinence from drink’. These and other records can be accessed at the National Archives. www.discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8993 Written by Ian Shaw, Roe Green Church
