Spotlight on Mental health Tips on how to stay in good mental health

Salford U3A

A social group for the semi-retired or retired

Spring is here and the longer and lighter days are a welcome change. Usually this is when the community bursts into life with an abundance of local events and activities. This year is unique though, with many events being cancelled just before we went to print. We updated the What’s On guide right up to the last minute, but expect more will have cancelled since then. So before attending anything, please check with the venue directly for the latest updates. I have family in Hong Kong who are just starting to come out the other side of this crisis. It’s a slow process but we will weather the storm. Stay positive, limit the amount of news and social media you consume, keep active, eat healthily, devise a new routine at home, take up a new hobby (mine will be knitting!), stay connected with friends & family by phone and online. Find out how to help others in your community on the ‘Spirit of Salford Network’ group on Facebook.

WOOD STREET MISSION

HELPING LOCAL FAMILIES SINCE 1869

W

ood Street Mission is a children’s charity based just off Deansgate in Manchester City Centre. Established in 1869, we support families from Manchester and Salford who are living in poverty. In 2019, our Family Basics project helped 3,784 children with clothing, bedding, toiletries, nappies, and baby equipment. We also helped 3,191 children with brand new school uniform through our project SmartStart. Our Books Forever project supported 273 children in our Book Clubs and in the academic year 2018/19 our Book Roadshows in schools, provided 929 children with 9,500 books! The clothing and everyday essentials bring the obvious benefits, but books bring escapism, creativity, a sense of pride and literacy skills that will help the children progress in education and ultimately help them to break the cycle of poverty. With your support, we will continue to provide for those who need it most and give them a chance to break that cycle. After all, we’ve been doing it for over 150 years, we can and still do, make a difference. If you would like to know more about our work and would be interested in supporting us then please take a look at our website. If you need help from us or you know a family who needs help, all the information regarding referrals can be also be found on our website. All our projects are free for families to access on referral. www.woodstreetmission.org.uk 26 Wood Street, Manchester M3 3EF Tel: 0161 834 3140 Registered charity - number 1078337

Your Health

Spotlight on

PUTTING YOUR MENTAL HEALTH FIRST Statistics say 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. Caroline Simmons from Step Ahead Hypnotherapy shares her tips for good mental health.

You know when you’re coming down with a cold. You feel a scratch in the back of your throat, and you take extra Vitamin C; get a few early nights, hoping to stop it in its tracks. Similarly, you can spot signs that your mental health needs some attention and take action to stay well and in good health. It’s different for everybody, but common signs include: Insomnia / vivid dreams Headaches Feeling anxious or sad Upset stomach Withdrawing socially Fatigue Three Top Tips for Good Mental Health: 1) Prioritising good quality sleep is key, because this is when we process the day and rationalise our experiences. Create a bedtime routine, switch off

10 ON OUR DOORSTEP

devices a couple of hours before bed, relax and dim the lights. 2) Downtime: Counter stress and anxiety by relaxing, scheduling fun or any activity when you’re “in the moment”, causing you to lose track of time; it could be a hobby, reading or meditation. 3) Be positive: Our brains can’t tell the difference between imagination and reality; any time you worry about things that may never happen, your brain thinks they already have! This leads to stress and anxiety. Every day, list what has gone well and what you are grateful for. Visit www.stepaheadhypnotherapy.co.uk or call Caroline on 07973 914718 for a free consultation and your first step up to a healthier, happier you.

Why Buy Your Dream Bathroom from Alfred Fraser Bathrooms & Tiles? We’ve sold, designed and fitted luxury bathrooms and tiles for all budgets from our showroom in Manchester for the last 5 years.

This means that you have greater choice in terms of both style and budget – to make your bathroom unique.

In this time we’ve learnt that a well designed, beautiful bathroom, can truly make you happy and improve your life. It’s true, ask our customers!

We realise that a new bathroom is a big investment and one that needs lots of consideration before finally making a decision. It could be that you’re not sure what style you want. Or you could fall in love with a particular piece – and the whole bathroom is then designed around it!

Having a bathroom that you love is a pre-requisite to starting your day well. Stepping into a sanctuary of warmth, comfort and style that functions amazingly sets you up for the day and puts a smile on your face. We think it’s fair to say that the bathroom is the most important room in your home and you shouldn’t settle for anything less than pure delight. The process starts when you walk into our showroom, you can feel free to wander around and look at the luxury bathrooms and tiles we have on display. There’s no hard sell, but we’re there to answer any questions you have or provide information and advice on what would suit you and your home. We pride ourselves in our wide selection of suppliers and our ability to differentiate ourselves from our competitors by working with independent bathroom and tile suppliers from around the world.

We would encourage anybody looking for a new bathroom to take advantage of our free on-site survey. At this time we can discuss in more detail what will and will not work, discuss any restrictions there may be in terms of design and take accurate measurements. Purchasing a new bathroom is a process not an impulse buy. We want you to be confident that you’re making the right choices for you and your family – and will work with you until you’re 100% convinced that the design will work for you. Our reputation is built on excellent service and exceptional installation. From initial design to the finishing touches, you can be assured that we are working hard for you to maximise the impact of your project and give you the result that you are dreaming of.

Our Community

PLOTTING AFTER THE STORMS! by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

At the Macmillan Plot, storms Ciara and Dennis certainly cleared some rubbish for us. Regrettably, we lost our entrance arch, a long standing Willow frame, lovingly woven but demolished in minutes. In contrast, the old chicken shed resisted the elements and needed help to flatten! The warm and wet weather has meant our berry cuttings have taken very well and our sprouts and leeks are looking good. We are feeding them with a liquid seaweed solution once a week and they all seem to be flourishing. The red onions are starting to sprout, we need to get our maincrop onions and potatoes started; the ground is so wet this year that harvests may be a bit late and perhaps low yielding. However, we now have new growth on our lemon and orange trees and the Avocado bush is putting everything to

30 ON OUR DOORSTEP

shame. The Dwarf Cavendish banana took me by surprise with the number of its new shoots. Our polyanthus have made a brilliant display this Spring with the lavender surviving the winter and getting ready to flower. We may have successfully propagated a passion flower which is sending up a whole crop of new shoots. A friend from the RHS donated a bunch of variegated colour Willow cuttings which will be used to plant a new hedge. It will be good to see how well it takes and if the colours work, we may weave a multi-colourful hedgeline. Growing your own and working in the open air, has so many environmental and personal benefits. Business Feature

Dream Doors provide customers a unique alternative to kitchen replacement. While we do offer complete kitchen installations, we’ve made our name through kitchen makeovers, in many cases offering our customers significant savings over other kitchen manufacturers and suppliers. We achieve this by working with each customer individually to build a kitchen that exactly meets their needs. A common misconception is that lower prices mean a cheaper alternative, whereas the products we supply are often vastly superior to our competitors. We achieve this by where possible, retaining existing structures, in some cases only suppling the doors, in others we replace appliances, worktops and floors to achieve the desired finish. In each case we work closely with our customers to find the right balance. Our doors and worktops are made to measure, appliances and sinks come from top name suppliers, combine these and you’ve got the recipe for a kitchen makeover that could

save you as much as 50% off a full kitchen replacement, installed in as little as two days. “You don’t build a conservatory by first knocking down the house”, why should it be any different with a new kitchen?
