G FESTIVAL 2019

Local Charity

T

he year ’19 only comes round once a Century and that was the age we lost Georgia. So this year we are moving to bigger premises to improve on the massive success of last year’s G-Festival, while maintaining the original values of what has become the biggest event in our community. All funds raised from G-Festival still go DIRECTLY to Georgia’s Children projects. Last year we completed Georgia’s Houses 7 & 8 in Cambodia, providing education to children who would not go to school at all. We also completed several wells and a water distribution system on the school site now educating over 200 kids! Due to unfortunate increasing demand, our free school uniform project with Salford Council continues to grow. We are also proud to announce that the

breakfast club we support at The Lifecentre in Salford won the Kellogg’s breakfast club of the year award. We continue to support several local children and their families with medical bills – giving them a better quality of life which we all take for granted. Georgia’s House 4, Love Light Romania’s learning centre, still provides education to some of the poorest children in Europe, while during the winter, as always, we helped supply food parcels to children living in appalling conditions at -25 degrees. So please join us again to raise money in the name of all those we have loved and lost and give an opportunity to children who otherwise, without you, would fall through the cracks.

PRECARIOUS CARNAVAL WE NEED YOU!!

W

e are thrilled to announce that this summer will see a huge performance take place in, on and around, the Bridgewater Canal to celebrate its 258th birthday. It is being organised by Est.1761, the project to restore and celebrate the Bridgewater Canal in Salford. Last year Brazil and Manchester-based artists Lowri Evans and Renato Bolelli Rebouças spent a month living on and around the Bridgewater Canal, getting to know the waterway and the people who use it. They have collected up stories and new friends, taking them back to Brazil before they return in June 2019, to create a three day colourful celebration of community connected by a very special canal.

8 ON OUR DOORSTEP

If you would like to get involved, this is your chance. Whether you fancy yourself as the canal’s next carnival queen or Salford’s next samba dancer, there’s an opportunity for everyone to take part and build something together. We are looking for makers and shakers, builders, bikers and boats. We’re looking for knitters, actors, dog walkers and even balconies overlooking the canal. If the canal holds a special place in your heart or you have a story to tell, we want to hear from you. We can’t have a carnival without you! You can get in touch and find out more by emailing precariouscarnaval@salford.gov.uk Precarious Carnaval is supported by Arts Council England.

THE POWER OF DRAMA & MUSIC U

S

“I know the power of drama and music. I know it makes us better human beings. I know how much it has meant to me.” Patron Imelda Staunton CBE

SALFORD ART CLUB

W

hat’s an Art Club? It’s a group of people with an interest in art. It provides affordable access to models for figurative and portrait sessions, to experience high quality demonstrations and workshops led by local artists, share ideas and form new friendships, no matter what your skill level. Salford Art Club is special as it meets in the wonderful setting of Salford Museum and Art Gallery. The club was started in 1947 by Ernest Goodman, initially meeting at his home. Six years later holding the first of the exhibitions at Salford Museum and Art Gallery. The collaboration with Salford Community Leisure has resulted in talented artists achieving recognition. Members including L.S.Lowry, Harold Riley, Edith Le Breton and Vera Lowe have had works bought by galleries up and down the country and the President Geoffrey Key carries on in their footsteps. What matters most is that the 40 plus members share the pleasure of painting and drawing; swap news about their latest projects; exchange tips on how they achieve different effects and talk about what works for them. We meet Wednesday evenings, 5.45-7.45pm at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, The Crescent, Salford, M5 4WU. Membership: £25.00 per annum. Demonstrations/Workshops: £1.00 open to non members. SPOTLIGHT ON: ASTLEY

Something old, something new... places to visit in Astley LANCASHIRE MINING MUSEUM lies in the heart of Astley Green and houses Lancashire’s only surviving headgear and engine house. Occupying 15 acres of the Astley Green Colliery site, the museum has many exhibits including a collection of 28 colliery locomotives, the largest of its type in the UK. The colliery began its life in 1908 to exploit coal reserves in the south Lancashire Coalfield. Standing at almost 30metres (98ft), the headgear can be seen for many miles. Closed in 1970, it was spared from demolition due to the uniquenesss of the 3,300 hp twin tandem compound steam winding engine. The site is a listed Grade II Scheduled Monument but is now “AT RISK” of closure. Urgent repairs and significant funding is needed to restore the headgear before it is lost forever. All donations welcome! Lancashire Mining Museum, Higher Green Lane, Astley M29 7JB OPEN Tues, Thur, Sat & Sun 1.30pm to 5.00pm www.lancashireminingmuseum.org

DAMHOUSE An elegant and historic manor house situated in beautiful secluded woodland in Astley. Dating back to 1595, Damhouse was the site of the manor house for the lords of the manors of Astley and Tyldesley. It was purchased and restored by the Morts Astley Heritage Trust in 1999. Consisting of 17 acres of stunning woodland, a villa and a lake with local wildlife, it is the perfect place to spend a morning or afternoon taking a leisurely walk and afterwards indulging in a coffee and cake in the tea room! A programme of community events also runs at Damhouse which includes quiz nights, history talks, kids activities, craft fairs, outdoor concerts and plays and more. Check their website for details. Damhouse, Astley Hall Drive, Astley M29 7TX OPEN Mon-Fri 9.30am to 5.00pm | Sat-Sun 10.00am to 4.30pm www.damhouse.net

A Luxury Residential and Leisure Destination A joint venture between Manchester property developers Salboy and Redwaters, Astley Point is a cutting-edge commercial hub providing 28 stunning homes across a six-acre site in Astley. The development includes fourteen luxury 3-bed houses with private gardens, two exclusive 3-bed Penthouse apartments and twelve further 1 and 2-bed apartments, all set around beautiful landscaped gardens and a large ornamental lake. Built on the site of the famous Rendezvous club – popular with film, TV and football stars in the 1970s, Salboy understood the location's importance and entertainment heritage, and was keen to ensure that they delivered something back to the community. The development's striking central building has already welcomed The Point Astley - a relaxed bar with alfresco terrace, as well as acclaimed restaurants Lizhi and Grand Holdi. Two further units are waiting to be filled – perfect for more restaurants or even a gym. With stylish homes, an upmarket food & drink scene and an easy commute to Manchester City Centre, Astley Point is quickly becoming an exciting focal point for the local area. @AstleyPoint ON OUR DOORSTEP 19

by Geoff Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

The cancer support gardening group has been awarded a grant, by the RHS Garden Bridgwater & NHS Salford CCG with support from Salford CVS, to erect a gazebo on a derelict plot next to the Community Room at Tindall Street.

they will be a later harvest but well worth the effort. They taste better than shop-bought and the shallots make excellent pickled onions!

We expect to start work in April so that we can sit outside, even if it rains! The scheme will allow better group activities and improve social inclusion for the benefit of plotholders and the wider community.

The flowers we grow to encourage early pollinators are coming on well, Pulmonaria and Lesser Celandines, whilst the Sweet Peas, Marigolds and Nasturtiums will soon be ready for their roles as pollinators and deterrents for planting between susceptible plants.

The group has been busy planting onion sets and shallots, in seed trays, ready for planting out when they start sprouting and the weather warms up. You can still get some onions and shallots into trays -

SALFORD REVISED DRAFT LOCAL PLAN JANUARY 2019

PROPOSED HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS A Local Plan is being prepared which will set out how Salford should develop up to the year 2037; this includes commercial and housing development, delivery of key infrastructure and protection of the city’s environmental assets. Written in line with the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF), a strategic plan covering the whole of Greater Manchester, we highlight some of the proposed housing developments in our catchment area which are worth being aware of. The GMSF has identified that Salford needs to deliver a high level of new housing, an average of 1,720 additional dwellings p.a. The majority will be in City Centre Salford and Salford Quays, but a number of Green Belt sites in Salford have also been earmarked as appropriate for housing development. Sites which fall into our local area include: Land at Ladywell Avenue, Little Hulton (1.1 hectares) 40 houses Land south-west of Hilton Lane, Little Hulton (6.9 hectares) 200 houses

Land south of the Church of St. Augustine, Pendlebury (2.8 hectares) 60 houses

Land south of Hill Top Road, Walkden North (1.7 hectares) 60 houses

Land south of Moss Lane, Walkden North (2.3 hectares) 80 houses Land north of Lumber Lane, Worsley (3.8 hectares) 60 houses Duncan Mathieson playing fields, Claremont (11.6. hectares) Recreational development incorporating outdoor sports pitches, allotments, car parking and a changing pavilion. Up to 50 residential dwellings will be permitted to cross-fund the recreational development. In addition, the GMSF allocates the following sites for housing: Land at Hazelhurst Farm (15.7 hectares) East of Boothstown (29.0 hectares) Read the list and Revised Draft Local Plan in full at:

www.salford.gov.uk/media/393434/revised-draft-local-plan-final.pdf A paper copy is available in all Salford libraries and at the Civic Centre in Swinton

PROTECTING OUR GREEN BELT Barbara Keeley’s, MP for Worsley and Eccles South, response to the Consultation on the revised draft GMSF (7.3.19) can be found at

www.barbarakeeley.co.uk/policy/2019/ 03/07/barbaras-response-to-theconsultation-on-the-revised-draftgreater-manchester-spatial-framework/ Here, any loss of Green Belt land is strongly opposed as it provides the ‘green lungs for an urban city’, vital in a city with high levels of air pollution. Four sites in Worsley & Eccles are listed: North of Irlam Station 1,600 homes (Chat Moss) Port Salford Extension 320,000 m2 of commercial development (Barton Moss) Land at Hazelhurst Farm 400 homes East of Boothstown 300 homes adjacent to RHS Bridgewater. Barbara urges that green belt should be kept in Salford for Recreation. These developments will have a significant impact on air pollution, existing traffic congestion and increase the strain on local services GPS, schools and transport network. Local residents are encouraged to voice their views about the proposals.
